If you miss the classic era of the scrolling beat-em-up and are interested in exploring how the idea might translate into virtual reality (VR) then a new title on Steam Early Access called Fury Fighter VR.
Fury Fighter is the creation of independent develop CentVire, who have adapted the classic beat-em-up formula that was successfully used in titles such as Streets of Rage and Final Fight back in the 1990s to the modern day.
Unlike its ancestors from the 90s, Fury Fighter VR is a full 3D experience with a more open environment and, of course, in VR. The graphics have been given a colourful, slightly polygonal look that mimics the look of early 3D, but with modern lighting and shaders.
The levels have been procedurally generated so players can expect a different experience each time. Players will be able to select a male or female character in a quest to rescue their boyfriend or girlfriend.
The current version is Early Access comes with the Arcade Mode, and is acting as the proof-of-concept for the fighting system, which the development team will test and take feedback from the community in order to improve for the cooperative mode and other game modes which are planned for later release.
The development team are planning on a 5-8 month period in Early Access for Fury Fighter VR, during which they will be working on new moves and new bosses to add in, as well as further developing the additional game modes. The full version will includes both competitive and cooperative multiplayer, with both free-for-all deathmatch and team-based deathmatch modes in multiplayer. The full version will also include extensive character customisation options.
Fury Fighter VR is available on Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, currently priced at £6.11 (GBP), a 15% discount on the usual price of £7.19, with the offer due to expire on 1st June, 2018.
