‘Game of Thrones’ VR Experience Coming Exclusively to Viveport Infinity

HTC today announced that a VR experience based on HBO’s hit TV series Game of Thrones is set to launch exclusively on Viveport Infinity starting tomorrow, supporting Vive and Rift.

The experience, called Beyond the Wall, is said to transport users to the northern border of The Seven Kingdoms to fight and defend ‘The Wall’, the megalithic structure separating the South from the untamed North—a place that plays host to the mysterious rise of an army of undead wights under the behest of the ‘White Walkers’. There, players will be able to test their sword-fighting skills against an undead polar bear and hoard of wights.

Beyond the Wall made its initial debut at select AT&T stores as a ‘4D’ brand engagement activation to promote the season finale of Game of Thrones; this represents the first time users will be able to jump into the experience at home.

Beyond the Wall was created by HBO and Framestore, the Oscar-winning studio known for their work not only in film and TV, but also immersive experiences such as the Game of Throne-themed VR activation Ascend the Wall, and the recent Magic Leap GOT experience The Dead Must Die.

Since Beyond the Wall is exclusive to Viveport Infinity, HTC’s Netflix-style game subscription service, you’ll of course need to be a member to play.

Viveport Infinity is typically available for free for a two-week trial, costing $13 per month afterwards (or $100 annually), which gives you unlimited access to a 500+ VR games and apps. Take note: throughout the month of June, both new and existing Infinity members who own an Oculus Rift or Valve Index will be able to redeem two free months of the service.

There’s just one more catch. Beyond the Wall is launching first in English in the US, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, the UK, and Canada. You can probably thank the patchwork of licensing issues that official IP releases necessarily face when they head across borders.

Life in 360°: Campeón del Capitán

Sometimes you just need to get away from everything and frankly this last week can get right in the bin. Then the bin can be locked up with chains and hurled into the sea. Preferably above the Mariana Trench. So, I’m not going to be about this next week.  Were only I able to take a short break to see somewhere new, I think things might feel a heck of a lot better – and looking at where today’s Li360 lands us what a sight that would be to see in reality.

Life In 360° / 360 Degree Videotional geograBut we don’t deal in reality round here, so we’ll have to make do with a 360 degree video from two names we’re pretty familiar with: Framestore and National Geographic Documentary Films.

Called Free Solo 360°, the short film follows Alex Honnold as he gets ready to achieve a lifelong dream: climbing Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan. A 3,200ft climb and since Honnold is a free soloist climber he’s doing the entire thing without a rope or safety equipment. Just his skill, experience, preparation and mental and physical toughness separating him from the sky and then the ground in short order. The climb, which was a record breaker, was the subject of a full documentary of the same name (though minus the 360°, obviously).

“It can be tricky in traditional filmmaking to portray a good sense of scale and context, but it’s all there in the 360° footage.” Explains Framestore’s Executive Creative Director Aron Hjartarson. “You are transported thousands of feet above the ground, hanging out with Alex as he weaves his way upwards, with the beauty of Yosemite National Park spread out below and reaching to the horizon. It was also a great project to play with the emergent art of 360° cinematography, using camera moves to add drama to the piece and lead the point of interest around the environment.”

You can follow this frankly amazing climb in the video below. Life in 360° will return next week.

Framestore Teams With Air New Zealand For First Magic Leap Project

Where as the idea of playing a card game on a computer has always been something readily accepted – largely in part to the likes of Solitaire being bundled with windows seemingly forever. The idea of playing a videogame version of a board game that wasn’t chess or othello/revesi took a little bit longer to be readily accepted. Now of course we have the likes of Tabletop Simulator that keep us readily entertained, and of course Mario Party to keep us readily trying to strangle our quote-unquote friends.

So, it shouldn’t be that surprising that Magic Leap’s L.E.A.P. conference in Los Angeles we would be introduced to a mixed reality (MR) board game for the Magic Leap One. Although the subject matter may indeed be a little head scratching to some.

From the team at Framestore comes their first content for the headset, in the form of the Air New Zealand sponsored Fact or Fantasy? The Fantastical Game of New Zealand. A four-player shared MR experience, Fact or Fantasy? The Fantastical Game of New Zealand uses a physical board, a digital quizmaster and brings aspects of the country to life in your living room.

It is, of course, a promotional piece to encourage you to go on holiday to the country. Something the General Manager of Global Brand and Content Marketing for Air New Zealand, Jodi Williams, addresses.

“This partnership is an important step towards understanding the part spatial computing could play in the future customer experience both on the ground and in the air. By getting in early and being both a developer and creator we have been able to test and learn, creating an incredible platform from which to explore the potential of this technology as part of our Future Aircraft Cabin Experience programme including concepts such as being able to reframe customers’ perceptions of the physical cabin environment.”

“We are storytellers at Framestore, first and foremost; innovation courses in our veins.” Adds Framestore CEO Sir William Sargent. “The promise of mixed reality excites us enormously, and we are delighted that this project with Air New Zealand and Magic Leap provides us with the chance to show the world the extraordinary potential of this new medium, as we experiment with new ways to share narratives.”

You can check out a video from Air New Zealand showing off the title in action below.  VRFocus will have more stories about the developments at the L.E.A.P. conference very soon.

Framestore And Noitom Partner To Create The Hyper Reality Test Drive Experience For Volkswagen

The Oscar-winning creative studio Framestore revealed earlier this week that it had partnered with the technology and motion capture specialists Noitom to work for Volkswagen Group China Import on developing the world’s first live virtual reality (VR) test drive experience. Released to the press and a crowd of VIPs in Zhuhai, China, the Hyper Reality Test Drive is an experience befitting for the all-new, technology-fulled Touareg.

Hyper Reality Test Drive

Seated as a passenger in the all-new Touareg on a real-life stuck track, and equipped with a bespoke customised Oculus headset, guests are taken on an exhilarating high velocity chase through other-worldly lands, as the vehicle comes under extraterrestrial fire – with only its in-built technology to help out. Thanks to leveraging both the physical and virtual worlds, the experience offers users with an immersive encounter unlike anything they may have seen before.

Framestore scripted the experience, plotting a hero’s journey across a four-act structure that shines light on the Touareg’s advanced inbuilt technology. Central to the script are the Touareg’s next level features, which offer a heroic escape from the narrative’s tumult of dangers. Strategically placed throughout the experience, the features create suspense and thrill, and form critical 4D touchpoints between the virtual and physical worlds.

Hyper Reality Test Drive

The physical experience covers acreage akin to a football pitch; the script’s journey was mapped, and 4D elements plotted to create action highlights. Thanks to a custom trigger system that ensures total synchronicity between in-game and real world moments for all six of the vehicles running the test drive at any one time. This is all made the much more exciting thanks to the bespoke soundtrack by Goldstein, engineered by GCVRS, as well as Mandarin and English voiceover to ensure that guests are fully immersed within the experience in their preferred language.

The experience, which is planned to be shown to media and investors in Zhuhai until the end of the moment before heading out on four regional roadshows around China, culminating in Beijing later this year. Those who are able to get to try out the experience will want to buckle up as the adventure will be sure to be thrilling ride. VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on the Hyper Reality Test Drive in the future, so stay tuned for more.

Framestore has Partnered up With Mixed Reality Specialist Magic Leap

Framestore, the creative studio behind Game of Thrones’ Ascend The Wall and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them VR has announced a strategic partnership with secretive mixed reality (MR) compnay Magic Leap.

Magic Leap One Reveal

In fact, Framestore has been working with Magic Leap for several years to create original content and new experiences that are expected to be released later this year on Magic Leap One: Creator Edition. The partnership will look to enable more brands and customers to build creative solutions, taking advantage of Magic Leap’s core technology.

“We are storytellers at Framestore, first and foremost; innovation courses in our veins,” said William Sargent, Framestore CEO in a statement. “The promise of Mixed Reality excites us enormously, and we are delighted that this collaboration with Magic Leap provides us with the chance to show the world the extraordinary potential of this new medium, as we experiment with new ways to share incredible narratives.”

Magic Leap finally released details about its first headset in December 2017, publishing several images as well as a fact sheet on what it could do. The Magic Leap One: Creators Edition comes with three components, the headset – or Lightwear – the circular processor and battery pack called Lightpack, and the haptic feedback, 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) controller, which doesn’t have a snazzy name.

Magic Leap One

Rachna Bhasin, Magic Leap CBO, adds: “Framestore has an impressive track record in pioneering the early adoption of emerging technologies. As a Magic Leap early access partner they are ideally positioned to support companies ready to explore and innovate with the potential of spatial computing. Our partners are at the forefront of next generation content and experiences, and we’re excited to be working with Framestore on several projects.”

There are no details about exactly when the Magic Leap One system will launch or exactly how much it’ll cost – predictions estimate it retailing for around $1,500 to $2,000 USD. With Framestore on board there’s certainly the opportunity for some impressive looking experiences to be had. When Magic Leap release further details, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Ever Wanted To Explore Fractals In VR? Beta Sign Ups Are Here

Ever Wanted To Explore Fractals In VR? Beta Sign Ups Are Here

Last year at SIGGRAPH, Framestore’s Johannes Saam gave me an exclusive tour of a passion project he was working on — a VR fractal multiverse called Coral.

I found myself lost among the patterns, flying in every direction and overwhelmed by the endless space around me. I could change the parameters of the universe just by pressing buttons on an Xbox controller, or switch to an entirely different universe and change the rules there too. For some math-loving developers and VR enthusiasts out there, Coral is a dream come true.

For those of you excited to explore fractals in VR, Framestore is readying to release a beta version of the software for Rift and Vive on Pi day, March 14. You can sign up here. I’m told the VR version of Coral runs on a GTX 1070 or equivalent, with a non-VR mode that should run on a GTX 1050.

Also, if you want to know more about Coral, Saam is delivering a talk at GDC on March 20 alongside Mariano Merchante about developing the experience.

Coral VR – Fraktale Erkundungstouren in endlose virtuelle Weiten

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them VR Experience Expanded for 2018 Release

For the launch of Google Daydream back in 2016, Framestore and Warner Bros. Pictures created a virtual reality (VR) experience based on the Harry Potter spin-off film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was known back in November that a PlayStation VR version was in the works but today the companies have announced the upgraded 2018 edition, coming to PC and mobile head-mounted displays (HMDs).

Fantastic Beasts 2018 Edition

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them VR Experience has been expanded from its initial 2016 offering with Framestore  adding more of an open-world gameplay style to include additional creatures, environments and interactive puzzles. New character additions include the Niffler, Occamy and Bowtruckle, to the already existing Erumpent, Thunderbird and Graphorn.

“With this project, we wanted to bring players into an immersive experience combining the graphic fidelity of the Fantastic Beasts brand with the interactivity of real-time games,” states Julien Charlebois, Head of Production, VR, Montréal in a statement. “In order to achieve the quality expected from a Fantastic Beasts experience on such a broad range of VR platforms, we had to leverage the knowledge and expertise of our different teams around the globe.”

This latest VR edition was led by Framestore’s New York and Montréal offices; the project marking the first real-time project from Montréal, which opened its VR Studio in 2017. The team worked to optimise and enhance this latest version with new visual fidelity and technological innovation, especially for mobile VR.

Fantastic Beasts VR

The VR experience allows fan to become wizards themselves complete with a wand in hand, able to cast spells and control their environment whilst tending to Newt’s fantastic beasts. A new trailer has been released featuring Eddie Redmayne getting to grips with the new content.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them VR Experience will be released today, 23rd January on the respective stores for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR (at time of writing this hasn’t happened yet). There’s been no mention of whether the PlayStation VR version will also be released today. For any further updates keep reading VRFocus.
