Third Episode of Space Explorers: The ISS Experience Available Now For Meta Quest

Space Explorers: ISS Ep03

If you love all things related to space then you’ve probably been closely following the rather epic project that is Felix & Paul Studios’ Space Explorers: The ISS Experience. Over the last few years, the studio has partnered with NASA and Time to record some amazing 360-degree footage aboard the International Space Station. Released episodically, today sees the launch of UNITE, the third instalment of the series.

Space Explorers

As the title implies, UNITE focuses on the crew members aboard the ISS. More specifically, the episode sees crew members from the same astronaut training class reunite. “A space culture evolves between the select few who have had the chance to live and work aboard the International Space Station. Old friends arrive, and for the first time, half of an entire astronaut class reunites on the station. The cycle continues as, once again, one mission ends and another begins. The crew’s unique shared perspective grows stronger as colleagues realize dreams of the humanization of space together,” the synopsis details.

The astronauts featured in this particular episode are: Nick Hague, Christina Koch, Andrew Morgan, Jessica Meir, Luca Parmitano, Hazzaa Almansoori, Alexey Nikolaevich Ovchinin, Oleg Ivanovich Skripochka and Aleksandr Alexandrovich Skvortsov.

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience has been pushing technological boundaries as it captures life onboard the station orbiting 250 miles above the Earth’s surface. In August the teams announced that the first 3D, 360° scenes in space had been captured using the highly specialised Outer Space Camera, a customized Z-Cam V1 Pro housing nine 4K sensors to record scenes at 8K resolution. Expect to see those in the final episode.

Space Explorers - Felix & Paul Studios

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience “UNITE” is available now for free. You can watch all three episodes on Meta Quest and Oculus Rift either via the Space Explorers app or on Oculus TV. This isn’t the last instalment either. The fourth (and final) episode Expand is due for release in Spring 2022.

Felix & Paul Location-Based VR Experience The Infinite Opening In Houston

The Infinite, an immersive VR exhibition about space and the International Space Station, will open in Houston this December. The exhibition is produced in partnership with Felix & Paul Studios, for which it acts as an extension of the studio’s Emmy Award-winning VR series, Space Explorers: The ISS Experience.

The exhibition is currently available in Montreal, Canada, where it will stay until it moves to Houston for a limited run from December 20, its United States debut. It is produced by Infinity Experiences, in a joint venture with PHI Studio and Felix & Paul Studios. You can watch the trailer for the exhibition’s current stint in Montreal above.

At 12,500 square feet, The Infinite’s trailer claims to be the largest virtual reality experience. It will last 60 minutes, during which you’ll be able to freely roam a life-scale replica of the International Space Station. The experience also includes new footage captured outside the International Space Station on September 12 this year, featuring the “first-ever cinematic spacewalk captured in 3D, 360° virtual reality.”

It’s not all virtual reality either — visitors can expect the 60-minute exhibition to include “interactivity between physical objects, virtual reality, multimedia art, soundscapes, light design, and even the subtle scents of a forest – evoking memories of stargazing while lying on the grass.”

PHI Studio Founder and Chief Creative Officer Phoebe Greenberg says the focus of the exhibition is on immersion and visitor freedom, and less so traditional museum artifects. “The Infinite experience is unlike any other exhibition examining space,” she said, in a prepared statement. “We took the approach to expansively underpin the visitor experience with exclusive content shot in virtual reality by Felix & Paul Studios aboard the ISS and did not center the exhibition around artifacts of space exploration.”

The Infinite begins its run at the Sawyer Yards in Houston, Texas from December 20.

The Infinite Brings its Multi-Sensory VR Experience to Houston in December

The Infinite

Felix & Paul Studios has been deeply invested in capturing the sheer wonder of space for several years now, collaborating with NASA on its Space Explorers project; most recently recording the first 360-degree footage outside on the International Space Station (ISS). Tied into this is another multi-collaboration project called The Infinite, an in-person experience that was originally launched in Montréal, Canada. Today, the next stop on The Infinite’s tour has been confirmed as Space City in Houston, Texas.

The Infinite

Still currently being shown in Montréal until early November, The Infinite will make its way to Houston for the US debut in December. A joint effort between Felix & Paul Studios, PHI Studio and Time Studios, guests will experience a mixture of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology across the 60-minute timeframe as they’re transported to the ISS.

The Infinite will be a 12,500-sq.-ft. exhibition allowing visitors to roam freely inside a life-scale replica of the International Space Station. Guests will be treated to the very latest footage from that cinematic spacewalk captured in 360° 3D, only recorded on 12th September. There will be plenty of interactivity not just in VR but also with physical objects, multimedia art, soundscapes, light design, and even subtle scents.

“The exploration of space and the unknown is an endless source of fascination to us. We are thrilled to bring The Infinite to Houston – the global epicentre of human space exploration – to share this massive, fully immersive exhibition, and we look forward to virtually transporting thousands of people off the Earth to enjoy the joy and wonder of space with audiences in the U.S.,” said Félix Lajeunesse, co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios and Creative Director of The Infinite. “This unprecedented project is made possible thanks to our partners at NASA, the ISS National Lab, international space agencies and the incredible power of virtual reality.”

The Infinite

“The Infinite experience is unlike any other exhibition examining space. We took the approach to expansively underpin the visitor experience with exclusive content shot in virtual reality by Felix & Paul Studios aboard the ISS and did not centre the exhibition around artefacts of space exploration. Using architectural design, free-roaming technology and commissioned artwork from Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda, we were inspired by humanity’s global fascination with space, integrating a poetic point of view of the astronauts. It was vital for us to transport the public to the particularities of life in space and [allow them to] feel their presence onboard and outside the ISS,” Phoebe Greenberg, PHI Studio Founder & Chief Creative Officer of The Infinite adds.”

For those interested in attending, The Infinite will be held at Houston’s Sawyer Yards from 20th December 2021 with early bird tickets starting from $29 USD. For further updates on all the latest Felix & Paul Studios news, keep reading VRFocus.

Inside COVID-19, Felix & Paul’s Space Explorers Nominated For Emmy Awards

Two VR experiences available on Oculus Quest have been nominated for Emmy Awards.

The experiences — Inside COVID19 and Felix & Paul Studios’ Space Explorers: The ISS Experience — are nominated in Outstanding Interactive Program 2021 category, up against two other non-VR titles. Last year, The Messy Truth VR won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Interactive Program, while The Line won for Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Programming.

Here’s a description of Inside COVID19:

Follow Dr. Josiah Child, an emergency department director and physician, as he readies his staff in five different hospitals to respond to the impending pandemic. In the midst of his preparations he is infected with the novel coronavirus.

Inside COVID19 is available to watch on Oculus TV for the original Quest and Quest 2. You can head to this link and press Watch in Device, which will open the experience as soon as you put on your headset.

Likewise, here’s a description of Felix & Paul Studios’ Space Explorers: The ISS Experience:

The largest production ever filmed in space, Space Explorers: The ISS Experience is an epic four-part immersive series that invites you to join eight astronauts on life-changing missions aboard the International Space Station. Shot over two years with exclusive access to the crew, The ISS Experience offers an intimate take on the joy, wonder, and dangers of life in orbit.

Only two episodes of the planned four are currently available, with episode three scheduled for a Fall 2021 release and episode 4 for Winter 2021. Space Explorers is free to download on the Quest store, but access to each episode will cost $2.99. That being said, episode 2 can be streamed for free in Oculus Venues between 12am PT July 20 and 11:59pm PT on July 23. The app is also available on Oculus Rift.

The winners of the 2021 Emmy Awards will be announced on September 19.

For National Space Day Watch Episode 1 of Space Explorers: The ISS Experience With Oculus

Space Explorers

The start of May offers quite the cosmic week. May 4th was obviously Star Wars Day while tomorrow ends the week with National Space Day. And to celebrate Oculus is continually streaming the first episode of Felix & Paul Studios’ Space Explorers: The ISS Experience exclusively via Oculus TV and through Oculus Venues.

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience

In the first episode of Felix & Paul Studios’ groundbreaking Space Explorers series, viewers get to see: “the arrival of a new crew of astronauts aboard the International Space Station as they discover the joy, wonder and danger of living in space.” Clocking in at 24-minutes, the immersive experience features astronauts Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques, Christina Koch and Nick Hague who served as cast, film crew, and narrators, utilising Felix & Paul Studios’ specialized 3D, 360-Degree Space Camera.

Space Explorers originally began several years ago as a two-part series with Space Explorers: The Journey BeginsA New Dawn followed by The Journey Begins – Taking Flight. This idea was then greatly expanded by Space Explorers: The ISS Experience, the largest production ever filmed in space. It produced over 200 hours of 360-degree footage, 18 hours of exclusive astronaut logs and interviews, as well as the first spacewalk in 360. The ISS Experience will eventually be a four-part series, with two more episodes to be released.

The second episode called Advanced only launched just over a month ago. The 33-minute film sees: “Astronauts perform critical experiments that push the boundaries of life in space as three crew members prepare to return to earth,” explains the synopsis.

Space Explorers: The ISS Experience, Episode One – “Adapt” will be streamed on a 24-hour loop for Oculus Quest and Rift owners between Friday, 7th May at 12 am PT through to Monday, 10th May at 11:59 pm PT. Currently, there are three other episodes available for purchase ($2.99 USD £2.29 GBP each) if you want to watch even more of Felix & Paul Studios’ amazing footage. New VR camera delivered to space station

A new virtual reality camera was successfully delivered to the International Space Station today. It’s not the first VR camera on the ISS, but this new one will allow the astronauts to film spacewalks in virtual reality.

According to NASA, The International Space Station Experience is creating an immersive virtual reality series documenting life and research aboard the space station.

Partnering with the ISS National Lab and TIME, a team from Felix & Paul Studios first launched a customized 360-degree camera to the space station in December 2018 that crew members have used to record a few hours inside the station every week.

Now, Felix & Paul and partner NanoRacks further modified an additional camera to withstand the extreme conditions of space and so that it can be used for filming a spacewalk.

The new camera will be mounted to the Canadarm2 to capture a spacewalk from start to finish as well as footage of Earth and the exterior of the space station, NASA said.

The camera is a Z-Cam V1 Pro camera consisting of nine 4K sensors allowing for a 3D, 360-degree image at 8K resolution and has been specially hardened to withstand vacuum, solar ultraviolet radiation, ionizing radiation, plasma, surface charging and arcing, temperature extremes, thermal cycling, impacts from micrometeoroids and orbital debris, Felix & Paul Studios said in a press release.

The camera can store approximately 15 hours of 3D, 360-degree footage with custom lenses made to withstand extreme light and heat to minimize flare when directly exposed to the Sun.

“Getting this camera to space was the culmination of five years of exceedingly hard work,” said Jonathan Woods, Executive Producer for The ISS Experience at TIME Studios and EMMY-winning producer of A Year in Space, in a statement.

To capture the spacewalk featured in Episode 4 of The ISS Experience, the Space Camera will be mounted and powered via the Nanoracks’ Kaber MicroSatellite Deployer and maneuvered around the outside of the International Space Station by Canadarm2, the Canadian robotic arm on the ISS. Canadarm2 will essentially function like a crane on a movie set, enabling the space camera to capture the spacewalk in fully-immersive virtual reality, bringing viewers alongside the astronauts as if they were part of the crew.

Felix & Paul Developing AR Project With Henson Company, Narrated By Neil Gaiman

Felix & Paul Studios is developing its first augmented reality (AR) project, titled The Storyteller: The Seven Ravens.

The project will feature an all-new chapter continuing the story from anthology TV series The Storyteller, created by Jim Henson in the 1980s. The new AR experience will feature a storybook that comes to life in augmented reality, with an accompanying story narrated by Neil Gaiman.

Unrelated to AR, a new Storyteller TV series is also currently in the works, led by the Jim Henson Company and written and narrated by Gaiman. According to Felix & Paul, The Seven Ravens AR experience will focus on a young girl who “sets out on an adventure to save her seven brothers from a curse that turned them into ravens.” The AR book will allow users to “interact with, explore, and re-explore the detailed and robust world of The Storyteller through the lens of The Seven Ravens tale.”

The project is co-produced by the Jim Henson Company and Felix & Paul, alongside funding from the Canadian Media Fund, the Magic Leap Independent Creators Program, Epic MegaGrants, and SODEC Quebec.

A preview of the project was shown last week at this year’s SIGGRAPH conference, held virtually, however you can also view some footage in the tweet embedded above.

Felix & Paul are known to have put out fantastic immersive VR content over the last few years, and a portal for the studio’s content became available for Oculus Quest earlier this year. The Storyteller: The Seven Ravens will be the studio’s first foray into AR content.
