Meta’s Latest Avatar System is Finally Rolling Out to All Unity Developers

Following an initial announcement eight months ago, Meta has released its latest avatar system for all Unity VR developers, including support for App Lab titles and limited support for non-Oculus platforms like SteamVR.

Update (December 13th, 2021): Meta today announced that its latest avatar system is finally available to all Unity developers. Formerly called Oculus Avatars 2.0—and now called Meta Avatars—the system brings a huge upgrade to avatar style and expressiveness compared to the company’s prior avatar systems.

The Meta Avatars SDK offers support for Unity-based VR applications on Quest and Rift, with limited support for non-Oculus platforms, like Unity VR apps built for SteamVR. Meta says that Quest apps on App Lab can make full use of the Meta Avatar SDK, just like those on the official store.

Meta Avatars aren’t yet supported in Unreal Engine, but support is expected eventually.

The company says it has built the Meta Avatar SDK “with developer needs in mind.” Developers can override the system’s positioning of avatar bodies and facial expressions if necessary to fine-tune avatar behavior for their given application.

The company also says the Meta Avatar SDK uses an interesting distributed architecture for performance. Instead of having all headsets redundantly calculate all of the positions and expressions of all avatars in a given scene, each headset performs the calculations for its own avatar and then streams that information to other participants. Developers are also free to use the system with whichever networking stack they’d like, which increases flexibility over a proprietary solution.

Oculus-based applications using the Meta Avatar SDK will use the avatar that player’s have customized through their headset’s avatar creator. SteamVR applications can use the Meta Avatar SDK, but because those apps aren’t tied to the Oculus platform players are restricted to choosing from one of 32 pre-configured avatars. In cross-play scenarios, Meta says that although non-Oculus players can’t fully configure their own avatar, they will see the fully customized avatars of Oculus players.

Documentation from the Meta Avatar SDK also includes a ‘Best Practices’ guide for developers to consider how they handle avatars within their apps.

As far as we know, the Meta Avatar system currently doesn’t support multiple avatar outfits or app-specific outfits, which means you can only have one ‘look’ at any given time. Similarly, it doesn’t appear to be possible for applications to offer their own unique outfits, accessories, or styles for players to use with their avatars within a specific app.

The original article, which overviews the preliminary release of Meta Avatars to select developers earlier this year, continues below.

Original Article (October 28th, 2021): Facebook began rolling out its latest avatars in the Oculus Avatars 2.0 update in April, which creates new default avatars for the company’s first-party social VR platform, Facebook Horizon.

In addition to being more lifelike and visually appealing than its prior releases, Avatars 2.0 is also positioned to unify the Oculus and Facebook ecosystems somewhat by bringing them to the full swath of Facebook properties including the Facebook app, Messenger, Instagram, and more.

Over the past year a number of third-party applications have worked with Facebook to adopt the system. You can already see the new avatars in Epic Roller Coasters, PokerStars VR, and Topgolf with Pro PuttSynth Riders and ForeVR Bowling. This SDK release will allow all Quest developers to do the same thing.

In comparison to previous avatar systems created for the Oculus platform, Avatars 2.0 offers up more possibilities for customization, including customizable skin tone, hair style, face shape/markings/lines, eye shape, eyebrows, eye makeup, and more. You can also choose clothing, glasses, and body types—something Facebook says makes for one quintillion possible combinations.

The company hasn’t said exactly when to expect the Oculus Avatar 2.0 SDK, although we’ll be glued to the company’s developer blog then to give you the heads up.

Facebook Connect 2021: Watch Livestreams Here

It’s the big week. Facebook Connect kicks off on Thursday, October 28 at 10am PT/1pm ET/6pm UK. You can watch the biggest events right here.

How To Watch Facebook Connect Livestreams

As always, Facebook Connect is stacked with keynotes, workshops and more. As with 2020, this edition of the event is all-digital and will see Mark Zuckerberg and other executives first deliver an array of updates in the opening keynote before John Carmack gives his yearly address (or marathon) on the state of VR later in the day. We’ll be streaming both on our YouTube channel, and you can find the videos below. We’ll also be live with our own reactions to the main keynote at 12pm PT and, again, the embed for that is before. You can also register on the official website to be notified about the event.

But what about what to expect from the show? You can find our predictions piece right here, outlining six areas we expect the company to touch on. And, of course, we’ll be bringing you the latest headlines right here on the site.

Last year’s show saw the announcement of the Oculus Quest 2 headset as well as several other new apps and experiences. With Quest 2 now out and seemingly selling well, we’re not expecting to see a full reveal of an Oculus Quest 3. But recently leaks suggest we could well see the reveal of the Oculus Quest Pro, an upgraded and more expensive standalone device with new features like full-body tracking.

As for games and apps? We’re still yet to learn a release date for the Quest version of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, and Vertigo Games is teasing news for After The Fall tomorrow too.

Facebook Connect Keynote Livestream (10am PT/1pm ET/6pm UK)

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will be on-hand to discuss the latest in Facebook’s VR and AR efforts. Will we finally see the Oculus Quest Pro revealed? What about the company’s plans for a future metaverse? And will we get another in-depth rundown on the latest from Facebook Reality Labs’ Michael Abrash? We’ll be watching along to find out.

Facebook Connect Keynote Reactions (12pm PT/3pm ET/8pm UK)

The main show is over, so what did we make of it? Join Jamie Feltham, Ian Hamilton and David Heaney as they pick apart the biggest announcements of Facebook Connect’s opening keynote.

Facebook Connect John Carmack Keynote Livestream (2pm PT/5pm ET/10pm UK)

No Facebook Connect is complete without a presentation from John Carmack. Join us as we tumble down the rabbit hole with the engineer once again to get a behind-the-scenes look at what’s new. Expect revealing stories and, almost certainly, an overlong runtime.

Are you looking forward to watching Facebook Connect? What announcements are you hoping for? Let us know in the comments below!

Tutorial Videos Leak Possible New Oculus Headset Ahead of Facebook Connect

New Oculus Facebook headset leak

It happened a couple of weeks ago just before the reveal of HTC’s Vive Flow headset and now it looks like Facebook’s big reveal for Connect may have been leaked. Several videos have been unearthed showcasing what looks to be a new virtual reality (VR) headset, new controllers and a possible charging station.

Four tutorial videos appeared on the account of Twitter user Bastian – who has previously leaked Oculus details – crediting a Reddit user called Samulia, who appears to have found them in Seacliff firmware. Seacliff is rumoured to be the codename for Oculus’ next headset.

If the videos are to be believed – they continue to maintain the company’s aesthetic style at least – the new design features a more balanced approach with a chunkier back that could contain the battery and processing components. The front visor is sleeker than previous models but most tellingly, looks very close to the prototype headset Facebook Reality Lab Head Andrew “Boz” Bosworth teased a couple of weeks ago.

There’s more of a Halo style band at the front which would aid comfort and hand tracking still features. In a couple of the videos, you get a glimpse at the possible new controllers which no longer include a tracking ring. Instead – as previous reports have suggested – the controllers will have their own in-built cameras to track movement instead. Very, very briefly is what seems to be a charging base for both the headset and controllers so users can pick up and play with no hassle.

Like any leaks of this nature, these new videos in no way guarantee that this is what’ll be announced at Facebook Connect later this week. However, the company has previously spoken about an Oculus Quest Pro that could feature more sensors for more immersive use cases. Further details are hopefully going to be revealed during the event, which these videos could be alluding to.

Facebook Connect will be taking place this Thursday, 28th October as a one-day-only online event, starting at 6 pm BST (10 am PST). It’ll include a keynote address by Mark Zuckerberg as well as other sessions like Connect With Carmack. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

New Quest Headset, Controllers, & Charging Dock Possibly Revealed in Leaked Videos

Official tutorial videos uncovered today show a previously unseen Oculus headset, controllers, and charging dock. The videos may reveal a new Quest 2 Pro or Quest 3 headset which could be officially revealed this week at Facebook Connect.

Four apparent tutorial videos, which Road to VR has independently confirmed to be official in origin, surfaced online Sunday showing a previously unseen Oculus headset.

The videos were posted on Twitter by user Bastian who says they come from ‘Seacliff’ firmware (which is believed to be the codename for an upcoming Oculus headset). While Bastian has consistently uncovered new information from Oculus software, they credit a user named Samulia with discovering the videos.

In addition to the unknown headset, the videos also show Oculus Touch controllers without any tracking rings, as well as a dock which appears to charge both the headset and the controllers.

The missing tracking rings on the controllers parallel previous purported leaks which suggested the new controllers may include cameras to do their own inside-out tracking, instead of being tracked by the headset’s cameras (as is the case with the original Quest and Quest 2).

It’s unclear if the headset in the videos is an upcoming product—it could simply be a placeholder or a generic headset for demonstration purposes—though it bears a striking resemblance to one of several prototype VR headsets that Facebook teased earlier this month.

If the video is portraying a new Quest headset, it appears that some of the device’s components have been moved to the rear headstrap, allowing the front of the device to become more compact and goggle-like than prior Quest headsets.

Given that the annual Facebook Connect conference is just days away, the natural speculation is that this headset will be officially revealed at the event. Mentions of a ‘Quest Pro’ device have been uncovered previously, alongside information suggesting that the headset could include face & eye-tracking. The company could of course also brand such a headset as ‘Quest 3’, though we’ll have to wait and see what is revealed at Facebook Connect on Thursday.

Facebook Connect 2021 Schedule: Zuckerberg Keynote, Carmack Unscripted & More

The full line-up and schedule for this year’s Facebook Connect is now available, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote speech and John Carmack’s unscripted talk.

This year, it looks like events and sessions will “unlock” across the Connect schedule– some sessions unlock at specific times, while others simply become available “after the keynote.”

The keynote speech itself unlocks at 10am Pacific on October 28, which will see Mark Zuckerberg and “other Facebook executives” deliver the annual keynote address and “share the vision for the metaverse — a place of new immersive experiences and the next evolution of social technology, built by people like you.” There’s also a Facebook event and Oculus Venues event for the keynote, both of which reveal the keynote title to be “Infinite Horizons” — a nod to the Horizon branding that’s now being used as the moniker for the different branches of Facebook’s social VR platform.

The next biggest event is Consulting CTO John Carmack’s notoriously-unscripted annual speech and Q&A session, which unlocks at 2pm Pacific on October 28, a few hours after the keynote. Last year, Carmack spoke for more than an hour, packing a huge swath of topics into a dense, unscripted talk about the keynote announcements and Facebook’s wider VR strategy.

Here’s a few, but not nearly all, of the other Connect events:

Developer State of the Union with Chris Pruett, Tom Langan, Allison Lee, and Mari Kyle, available from 11:45pm Pacific, October 28.

– Best Practices and Tips for App Lab Success with Chris Lang, available after the keynote

Introduction to Mixed Reality with Britta Hummel and more, available after the keynote

– Do You Really Know App Lab? Tales Of Success From Devs with Rita Turkowski, Daniel Sproll (Realities.io), Julien Pecenicic (Smash Drums), Tommy Maloteaux (Deisim), available after the keynote

– Building for the Future: Social and World AR Experiences with Matthew Roberts and more, available after the keynote

– Bringing Diversity To Your App with Daniel Kamerling, available after the keynote

Build Mixed Reality Experiences with Wei Lyu and more, available after the keynote

– Building Diverse Communities in Horizon Worlds with Lisa Kotecki and more, available after the keynote

Facebook Connect begins on October 28 — you can view the full schedule of talks and register for the event here.

Pimax Promises a Sneak Peek at ‘Next-gen’ VR Product on October 25th

Pimax announced its holding a product event on October 25th that will introduce a next-gen VR headset, something that the company promises will be “several generations ahead of anything currently on the market.”

The event, dubbed Frontier 2021, was originally set to take place on October 20th, however since its general announcement Pimax has moved the event to October 25th, or just three days before Facebook’s yearly Connect VR developer conference.

Pimax says in an email to press that Frontier 2021 will “showcase the Pimax product roadmap, related technologies, the vision of VR3.0, and a sneak peak of code name “Reality”: a new product that’s several generations ahead of anything currently on the market.”

A proper unveiling of ‘Reality’ is said to take place at CES 2022 in January. The name, Pimax says, “should give you an indication of the power of this product.”

You’ll be able to follow along with the announcements in a livestream on YouTube, taking place at 10 AM PT on October 25th (local time here). If the company’s other VR headsets are any indication, ‘Reality’ may be another wide-FOV, high-resolution headset.

Pimax isn’t alone in the Techtober XR product reveals. This month has already seen the unveiling of HTC’s standalone Vive Flow and Magic Leap 2. High-end headset creator Varjo is also holding a product launch event on October 21st.

Notably, Pimax shifted Frontier 2021 to be even closer to Facebook Connect, the latter of which is coming in a single-day event on October 28th. There we may get a peek at the rumored Oculus Quest Pro in addition to hearing more about the company’s recently revealed prototypes, which ought to make for some interesting points of comparison.

Facebook Connect 2021 Will Take Place in October

Facebook Connect

Originally launched in 2014 as Oculus Connect, Facebook’s annual developer event focused on its XR plans saw a name change in 2020 to Facebook Connect; and due to the pandemic an online-only conference. This week the company has announced the 2021 event will be held on 28th October as a virtual showcase.

Mark Zuckerberg (OC5)

Usually, the Connect series of events takes place in September so this is unusually late in the year. Facebook Connect specifically concentrates on both developer and consumer announcements, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg taking to the stage to kick things off with the biggest announcements. 2020 famously saw the confirmation of Oculus Quest 2 after several months of leaks.

Other than it being a purely virtual event and the date, no other details have been shared at this time. The official website merely says: “Check again later for registration and event updates.” Expect plenty of pre-recorded presentations, possibly revealing new hardware developments and plenty of software announcements, of course.

The Quest platform has seen rapid iterations so there’s a very real possibility that Facebook may reveal details on the Oculus Quest Pro. Zuckerberg has already confirmed the device is being worked on, with a plan to add more sensors to expand its range of use cases. Eye-tracking or facial tracking sensors could very well be on that list, and Facebook Connect 2021 could see that first tease.

Oculus Quest 2

VRFocus also believes the roster of announcements will include the much talked about augmented reality (AR) smart glasses Ray-Ban is helping create and a final date for Lone Echo II. The smart glasses have been rumoured to arrive this year, and as yet, haven’t been revealed. As for Ready at Dawn’s Lone Echo II, the sci-fi adventure was due next week but the studio pushed it back to late 2021.

Facebook Connect never usually disappoints when it comes to exciting XR announcements. Like previous years speakers such as Facebook Reality Labs’ Chief Scientist Michael Abrash are expected to give their usual presentations. When details are confirmed as to the schedule, VRFocus will let you know.

Facebook Connect Will be Held Online on October 28th

Facebook today announced that its XR conference, Facebook Connect (previously called Oculus Connect) will be held on October 28th. This is the second year running that the event has been in an online format due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Facebook Connect is the company’s annual conference for AR and VR developers. It’s also often used as a platform for the company to make major announcements relating to its XR initiatives.

While prior versions of the event have been an on-site multi-day affair, for the second year running the event will be hosted online. The company announced today that Facebook Connect will happen on October 28th, likely comprised of pre-recorded video segments.

Beyond the date and confirmation that this year’s event will once again happen online, there’s no information yet about the event’s program, with the official website asking visitors to “check back for registration and event updates.”

By my recollection, October 28th is the latest in the year that the event has ever been held. In 2020 it happened on October 13th and in 2019 it kicked off on September 25th.

Considering that the event is being hosted online, Facebook doesn’t have to contend with venue schedules, which likely means the company carefully picked late October to align with its strategic objectives. The holiday shopping period has been huge for Quest and Quest 2 in years past; a late October event seems poised to generate excitement on the run up to the holidays.

Last year Facebook announced Quest 2 at Facebook Connect. It was somewhat surprising considering that the company had just shipped the original Quest the year before, and it was unclear whether they would follow up so quickly with a successor (especially during the pandemic chaos).

It’s similarly unclear this year if the company will attempt to keep up a yearly pace for hardware improvements, but Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has spoken about the idea of a ‘Quest Pro’ headset. There’s also those AR glasses the company has been working on.

If anything, Facebook’s greatest interest in upgrades to Quest 2 right now is likely focused on upgrading its cameras to support the headset’s experimental AR capabilities.
