Facebook Showcases a Vision of Future Full-Body Oculus Avatars

There was a lot to take in from this week’s Facebook Developers Conference (F8) 2019, not just the official rollout of pre-orders and launch dates for Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S. The company showcased some of the work it was doing across a range of challenges it was trying to tackle, one of them being social interaction in virtual reality (VR). During the second day’s keynote, Facebook unveiled its latest Oculus Avatars prototype which aims to bring someones entire body into VR.

Facebook Prototype Avatars

The work is being done by Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) with the goal to be able to fully represent a user from head to toe in VR, making social interactions even more seamless and natural.

FRL’s Ronald Mallet began by discussing a project the team revealed a couple of months ago, Codec Avatars, which was about making avatars as photorealistic as possible. While certainly a massive leap from the current avatars available today, a massive amount of equipment was required to scan a user’s features, plus it only worked from the shoulders up.

Mallet noted that while plenty of information can be glean from someones facial expressions, the same can work for the entire body; where full motion can tell you about emotion, agreement, trust and empathy. The needed to create a body model that represented the human anatomy but which needed to be fully adaptive to match any individual automatically.

Facebook Prototype Avatars

To build the model FRL started from the inside out, designing an anatomically correct skeleton with proper articulations, from the way the shoulders roll to joint movement. Then they matched the skeleton to a users body structure, which accurately followed the team members movements, all from a single sensor – Mallet didn’t specify which sensor if it was a normal Oculus one.

Of course, we can’t all be skeletons in VR so muscles were added to the model, helping to predict how they move and contract. Finally, skin and clothes were added as faithfully as possible with a physics-based model for cloth deformations, with the final prototype seen in the above image.

There’s still a way to go before this tech will be consumer ready, it does look very promising. For now, Oculus Rift users will have to be happy with the Expressive Avatars update. As further details are released, VRFocus will let you know.

Oculus for Business Gets a Revamp at F8 2019

The launch announcement news for Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest might have dominated the virtual reality (VR) of the Facebook Developer’s Conference (F8) 2019 keynote but there was more to glean from the event. Kean to continue pushing its Oculus for Business initiative, Facebook has introduced a new programme which includes the addition of Oculus Quest.

Enterprise deployment has been an important part of the VR industry, with automotive, healthcare and architecture companies just some of the few industries employing the technology to help with design, training, and sales.

The new Oculus for Business will expand the initiative to include the new standalone headset alongside Oculus Go while the original Oculus Rift will be dropped due to the device being discontinued. It seems as though Oculus for Business will only be using these two headsets, with no mention of Oculus Rift S.

Alongside the new hardware will be a new set of tools for companies to utilise for large scale deployments, such as mobile device management for scale, enterprise-focused user experience plus dedicated service and support. Oculus also notes that: “We’re also working closely with leaders in enterprise IT and services to develop ways to integrate VR right alongside the workflows and services businesses already use.”

Because of these additional features, Oculus for Business bundles are priced differently. Available to bulk order, the 64GB version of Oculus Go retails for $599 USD while the enterprise Oculus Quest will cost $999 for the 128GB version. When purchasing an Oculus for Business hardware bundle, each one will include an enterprise warranty with full software access and support for one year. Once that first year has concluded, software access is available for an annual fee of $180 per headset.

Oculus for Business was launched during Oculus Connect 4 (OC4) back in 2017 with the Oculus Go version released in 2018. Since then numerous companies have begun utilising VR, with one of the most notable being Walmart which has deployed 17k Oculus Go’s across its stores after testing VR training and seeing a 10-15% improvement in performance (claims Oculus).

Oculus does note in a press statement that there could be ‘some changes’ to this list between now and 21st May.
The announcement today sees both Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest being confirmed for release next month. The Standalone headset will come in two options, 64GB for $399 and 128GB for $499. VRFocus will continue its coverage of both headsets, reporting back with the latest updates.

Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S Pre-orders go Live; Dual Launch on 21st May

It’s the first day for the Facebook Developer’s Conference (F8) and as expected it has not disappointed. There has been a massive double whammy announcement for virtual reality (VR) fans with the news that both standalone headset Oculus Quest and tethered upgrade Oculus Rift S will both be released on the same day, and that pre-orders are going live today.

Oculus Quest White Backdrop 1

Oculus is looking to cover all bases with these two new head-mounted displays (HMD). If you have a suitable PC then it’s the Oculus Rift S you’re after. And for those that don’t have a PC – or one that isn’t VR capable – then the Oculus Quest is your answer.

The company’s first all-in-one solution, Oculus Go, offering a neat entry-level path into VR. With Oculus Quest customers now have an upgraded option with full 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF), allowing them to fully move around a roomscale virtual environment thanks to Oculus Insight, the inside-out tracking system which uses the four wide-angle sensors on the front of the headset. Oculus Insight not only provides real-time tracking of the headset, but it also tracks the new Oculus Touch controllers for maximum immersion. It’s also the same solution used with Oculus Rift S.

With the original Oculus Rift now discontinued the Oculus Rift S is now the flagship device. Thanks to its PC connection the HMD will be able to provide experiences the Oculus Quest can’t, and thanks to a fifth sensor on the top of the headset provides an even greater tracking field for the controllers.

Oculus Rift S 1

Both Oculus Rift S will retail for $399 USD while the Oculus Quest will come in two options. The 64GB model for $399 and the 128GB model for $499. Pre-orders go live today (30th April) with both available to purchase from 21st May in 22 countries. For US customers, Oculus’ retail partners include Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and GameStop, online and in stores, with Best Buy also offering Oculus Quest demos on launch day. And then there are Currys PC World, FNAC, MediaMarkt, and more in the UK and EU.

Oculus has stated that Oculus Quest will have over 50 titles for its launch next month, with quite a few already confirmed. It’s certainly an exciting day for VR fans and as further announcements today are made, VRFocus will let you know.

Coming to Oculus Quest: PokerStars VR, Ballista & National Geographic Explore VR

It’s the week of the Facebook Developers Conference (F8) and hopefully, tomorrow should see some exciting virtual reality (VR) announcements being made. Expectations are that Oculus Quest may finally get its ‘Spring 2019’ release date. The company has been building expectations via its #QuestCountdown, with several new apps and videogames now confirmed for the standalone headset.

Ballista header

When it comes to videogames, newly revealed is Ballista by High Voltage Software (Dragon Front). The experience puts players in control of a giant sling to destroy castles. With a fantasy theme involving goblins and a magic mirror, players also have use of a special unicorn wand to destroy their foes.

“With Quest, we’re able to better provide a full range of motion to let people move around their entire play area and impact gameplay,” says High Voltage Producer Keith Hladik in a statement. “Whether it’s defending your creatures from attack or walking around to analyze a castle, the game provides an immersive experience.”

And for those that like to gamble, PokerStars VR will be an Oculus Quest launch title. “PokerStars VR givers players the atmosphere and social interaction you get when playing in an actual poker room,” says LuckyVR Founder Jeffrey Lande. “With VR technology, we can deliver players the immersive feeling you might not get on other platforms. Oculus Quest takes that one step further in terms of a new level of accessibility. Being able to set up independently means players have more freedom to play how they want and whenever they want.”

VR is great for exploring the natural world and you’ll be able to do that this Spring with National Geographic Explore VR. A collaboration between National Geographic, Force Field VR and Oculus, the 30-minute experience challenges you to find a lost penguin colony hidden in the frozen wilderness of Antartica.

“National Geographic continues to experiment in the immersive storytelling space,” says Senior Director of Immersive Experiences at National Geographic, Jenna Pirog in a statement. “We are using the latest visual technology to spark curiosity about our world and enable people to better understand it.”

Further adventures will be added to the app in the coming months, such as archaeological expeditions to sites of important cultural heritage. As that happens, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Facebook’s F8 Conference Dated for April

Everyone’s favourite social network, Facebook, holds an annual event during the Spring primarily focused on developers. Of late F8 has been used as a platform to announce bring updates and new features, not only for developers but also the public at large. F8 2019 will take place across April/May of next year, and there’s the slight possibility that the owner of Oculus may use the conference to launch Oculus Quest.

Oculus Quest - Hero / Lifestyle Image

This is by no means a fanciful notion. The upcoming standalone headset was first unveiled during Oculus Connect 5 (OC5) a few months ago, with the company stating a release date of Spring 2019. While the timing works well enough, the other major factor is that Oculus Go was itself launched during F8 2018 to much fanfare.

Honestly, the timing couldn’t be much better, with the only cravat being the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019, the previous month. As VRFocus has previously written, GDC tends to be much more favored by Facebook/Oculus as an opportunity to make virtual reality (VR) announcements and put an actual display on rather than the bigger – and presumably more expensive – Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June.

Additionally, not only is a launch date yet to be confirmed but also all the videogames that’ll be available on day one. Mark Zuckerberg mentioned at OC5 there would be fifty titles on launch day, with following already confirmed: Robo RecallThe Climb and Moss. Also coming to the headset are VR FurballsProject Tennis Scramble,Face Your Fears 2Dead & Buried ArenaRave Runner, and Star Wars: Vader Immortal.

Oculus Quest - Front

Regarding F8 2019 in general, Facebook’s vice president of partnerships Ime Archibong said in a blog post: “This year we celebrate the developers, creators, entrepreneurs and innovators building with our platform and tools. There will be networking opportunities, deep-dive sessions, and product demos, all showcasing how technology can enable the best of what people can do together.”

The Facebook Developers Conference is due to take place from 30th April – 1st May 2019, in San Jose, California. For further updates on the event, keep reading VRFocus.
