The Walking Dead Onslaught Coming This September

After a year’s delay, we finally know when The Walking Dead Onslaught is arriving on VR headsets and we won’t have too wait long.

Survios’ zombie-slaying game touches down on September 29. That much was confirmed by IGN with a new trailer for the game that gives us our first look at gameplay in over a year.

Unlike The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, which is set in the world of the comics, Onslaught is based upon the TV show, starring a familiar cast of characters. Players will take up arms as Darryl Dixon and more in an all-new story that sees you slicing and shooting your way through hordes of the undead.

The gameplay here looks far improved from what Survios showed a year ago. We spoke to the team earlier this year, at the time confirming that the game’s co-op support was being stripped out in favor of doubling down on story. Based on what we’ve seen here, we’re hoping that decision has paid off. The chance to sling a sword as Michonne is certainly an exciting one.

Saints & Sinners — developed instead by Skydance Interactive — ranked highly on our recently refreshed best VR games lists, so Onslaught will have some tough competition at launch. Pre-order bonuses for the game include new skins for Darryl and Rick, plus golden katana and knuckle knife weapons.

The Walking Dead Onslaught lands on PC VR and PSVR headsets this September. No word on an Oculus Quest version yet, though Saints & Sinners is due on the device later this year.

New Hitman VR Gameplay And Details Debut In Developer Video

Hitman is coming to VR next year, and it looks like IO Interactive is pulling out all the stops with its port.

A new developer video for the game arrived today, giving us a closer look at new gameplay elements. We saw a few more levels beyond what was revealed in last week’s announcement, but also members of the IO Interactive team are on hand to discuss the work going into the VR version.

It sounds like IO is giving this port the proper treatment. For example, the developers confirmed that the game’s melee attacks aren’t just executed with a simple button press but an actual swing of your hand. Shootouts, meanwhile, turn into physical cover-based affairs and stealth will see you crouch down to hide in tall grass. Plus several moments in the game look incredibly immersive, like hiding in a closet to wait for targets, though they definitely touch on VR’s more sinister side.

What the developer didn’t touch on, however, was supported platforms. Hitman 3 is coming to both PS4 and PS5 and, as we wrote last weekend, it would be a very weird choice to let us play the PS4 version in VR but not the PS5 version. We’re sure an interesting explanation is due at some point in the future. PS5 launches later this year and will support the original PSVR headset, plus all the original controllers you used to play existing PSVR games.

How do you think we’ll be playing Hitman VR in January? Let us know in the comments below!

Stride Closed Beta Accepting Applications Now

Want a first chance to try Mirror’s Edge VR lookalike, Stride? You’ll need to act quick.

A closed beta for the VR free-running game is coming soon and developer Joy Way is accepting applications now. You can sign up here but take note that sign ups will be closing later tomorrow, so don’t hesitate. Successful applicants will be chosen at random and you’ll have to sign a confidentiality agreement, so no sharing any content from the beta is allowed.

Once the application period is over winners will be sent a key and have access to the game for two days. Expect to have access to some of the modes that will be present in the Early Access version of the game, which goes on sale later this month. Last week the game broke cover with a new trailer that shows off some slightly different visuals.

Stride’s caught the attention of many a VR fan for its fast-paced approach to VR movement. You dart over rooftops, leaping huge gaps and taking out enemies either with a gun or with melee combat. In Early Access, the game will have a handful of extra modes roll out, like an option to endlessly spawn new landscapes to traverse. A full single-player campaign will be arriving later down the line.

Even if you miss the beta, don’t worry too much.  Like we said, Stride comes to Early Access later this month, so you’ll be waiting an extra few weeks at the most. Excited for the game? Let us know in the comments below!

HTC Teams With The MOR For Fabric Of Reality VR Catwalk

HTC is helping fill-in for the catwalk amid lockdown this summer, with a new virtual event in The Museum Of Other Realities.

The company partnered with RYOT and the London College of Fashion for this new event, named The Fabric Of Reality. available through the Viveport version of the app. Available for the next 12 months the exhibition showcases the work of three designers, recreated in VR with the help of other artists. Popular VR creator Sutu, for example, paired with fashion designer Damara. VRHuman, meanwhile, teamed up with Sabinna, and Charli Cohen, Anand Duncan and Joy all worked together.

Projects like these aren’t just a clever way to host events that have been massively restricted during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; they’re also genuinely new and inventive ways to expand upon the existing foundations. With this virtual catwalk, for example, artists and creators aren’t restricted by the limits of reality.

Indeed, fashion has become a platform for increasingly experimental VR experiences. Last year at the Raindance Film Festival we took a look at See, Saw, Seen, an intriguing piece that attempted to flip the concept of the catwalk on its head. You can take a look at it in the first episode of the VR Culture Show below.

The MOR is free through Viveport Infinity, or costs $19.99. The virtual museum also hosts plenty of other experiences and has been a regular venue for other exhibitions during the ongoing pandemic. Will you be heading into The MOR for a look at The Fabric of Reality? Let us know in the comments below!

Pokemon Just Launched An Official VR Theme Park (In Japanese)

Well this is an odd one – an official, limited-time Pokemon virtual theme park just launched, and you can visit it in VR. Meet Pokemon Virtual Fest.

Pokemon Virtual Fest is open from today through to August 31st and can be played in browser, on smartphones or with a PC VR headset via SteamVR. After downloading Cluster, a Japan-made virtual events service, you can launch into the park to try out rides and minigames. The app is online, too, so you can explore with friends. A word of warning, though: the entire app is in Japanese.

So, yes, it’s all a bit strange. I booted up Pokemon Virtual Fest, gave myself a Scorbunny avatar (because of course) and found myself in a lobby with giant Pokeballs, holographic projections of Pikachu and Polygon, and several doors. Some lead to minigames, like a decidedly un-Pokemon virtual maze with passwords that I had to get other players to basically do for me.

Behind one door, though, is the park itself. It’s a colorful VR space with a giant Pikachu statue in the middle and a few attractions to visit. I stepped onto a Pokeball Ferris wheel, for example. But that’s about all you can do without clearing the other missions. Solve those (easier said than done if you don’t speak the language) and you can also ride a trade, visit a beach or head to an events stage to dance along with an army of Pikachus.

It’s a fun little experience, if still a far cry from the full Pokemon VR game we’re all dreaming of. In fact, the unofficial fan game for SideQuest gets a lot closer to that vision than we’ll see for a while, we suspect.

Watch: Little Witch Academia VR Comes To Quest In October, PSVR & PC VR In 2021

Time to hop on a broomstick and take flight in VR. No, there’s not a Harry Potter VR game coming; there’s a Little Witch Academia game on the way instead.

Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing was actually announced a little earlier this year. Today, though, developer UNIVRS confirmed the game will hit the Oculus Quest first on October 13th. That’ll give you plenty of time to practice before Halloween rolls around, then. PSVR and PC VR versions of the game are expected in early 2021.

But that’s not all, we also have a new trailer for the game. It debuts the flight-based gameplay, in which players zoom through rings, collecting power-ups and attempting to master each of the 10+ tracks. UNIVRS says its implemented its own motion sickness reduction tech into the game, so we’ll be interested to see how that integrates.

Perhaps more excitingly, though, VR Broom Racing seems to be pretty faithful to the Little Witch Academia anime. The series’ usual voice actors return both in Japanese and English. You’ll enroll as a guest student at the Luna Nova Witchcraft Academy and interact with them between races. Plus there will be online multiplayer modes for you to take on other students, too.

TV series songwriter/composer Yuiko Ohara and singer YURiKA are also back with a new theme song, Dream Flight.

Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing will cost $29.99 at launch. You can find out more on the game’s official website. Will you be picking the game up? Let us know in the comments below!

Prince Of Persia: The Dagger Of Time VR Trailer Teases Arcade Experience

Ubisoft has another look at its upcoming VR arcade game, Prince Of Persia: The Dagger Of Time, this week.

A new live-action trailer for the experience just debuted and, while it doesn’t show any direct gameplay, it does give us some hints about gameplay mechanics. We can see four people exploring a location that would be right at home in the iconic gaming series.

But, when a crumbling pillar threatens to crush one player, another is able to pause time to save them. They do this using a dagger. That’d probably be the Dagger of Time, then.

Suffice to say some people are disappointed to see the long awaited return of the Prince of Persia series in VR, not to mention VR arcades. But Ubisoft’s location-based efforts have actually been pretty solid in the past; we were fond of each of the Assassin’s Creed VR games that company’s put out in the past.

The Dagger Of Time, meanwhile, takes place during the classic PS2-era Prince of Persia trilogy. Ubisoft has revealed a bunch of locations you’ll be able to find the game on its official website though, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic still lingering, it’s not clear exactly when we’ll be able to jump back into VR arcades with confidence.

This is just one VR project we’re looking forward to from Ubisoft right now, though. The company is also working on another VR arcade experience with Zero Latency and confirmed to us earlier this year that it’s working on a new AAA VR game. Rumors suggest that this could be a new entry in the Splinter Cell franchise.

Hitman VR Might Mean More For PSVR Than You Realize

Last Thursday’s State Of Play event held a welcome surprise for PSVR owners: Hitman 3 is coming to the headset.

But, while IO Interactive’s announcement might seem simple enough on the surface, the wording around it creates an interesting situation.

Hitman 3 is coming to both PS4 and PS5 in January 2021 (and other platforms, but it looks like VR support is exclusive to PlayStation). But this week’s announcement didn’t specify if the game includes PSVR support on PS4, PS5 or both. In fact, this quote from the IO Interactive Communications Manager Travis Barbour on the PlayStation Blog, suggests it’s all a bit up in the air.

“We’re working to finalize the specifics for how PS VR owners can enjoy Hitman in VR,” the quote reads, “and we’ll have more details to share in the months ahead.”

We’ve reached out to IO to clarify exactly which platforms Hitman supports PSVR on. Speaking purely speculatively, we’d expect the PS4 version to of course include support, but it would be a truly bizarre situation if the PS5 version of the game then didn’t have any integration to speak of.

Here’s what we know so far about VR on PS5: the original headset supports the console. But, as far as we know, this is only to play backward-compatible PSVR games, not brand new PSVR titles. Sony this week confirmed that all your own PSVR controllers and peripherals will work with old PSVR games on PS5, but hasn’t said anything about new games.

Hitman 3 VR Screenshot 2

If Hitman on PS5 does support PSVR, it makes the next-generation console’s impending launch much more exciting for VR fans. It means that we’ll be seeing new VR games with improved graphics and performance long before Sony releases any potential successor headset. Even though PSVR tech itself might be dated, the jump in computing power navigates one of the biggest hurdles that’s held some PSVR games back over the past four years. And it could open the door to more technically ambitious ports that are yet to reach the headset.

Again, that’s all speculation for now, but PS5’s holiday launch window is nearing and Sony is going to need to clear this up sooner or later. We’ve got our gloved fingers crossed, though, that Hitman’s PSVR support means more for the platform than we first realized.

Swordsman Antagonist The Jötunn Revealed In Exclusive Look

Like many of you, we’ve been keeping a keen eye on SinnStudio’s swordsman, a Blade & Sorcery-esque VR combat game with promising physics-driven combat. Today, we’ve got an exclusive look at the game’s antagonist.

Feast your eyes on The Jötunn, a hulking beast of a boss who, in Norse mythology, emerged from the realm of Jötunheim (or rather, the frozen wasteland in one of the Thor movies). The Jötunn is here to enslave humanity and has built up an army of Earth’s most vicious warriors to aid him. Captains from all corners of the globe including Knights, Vikings, Mongols and Samurai each have a captain with a supernatural weapon to challenge you with. You’ll need to beat them to face The Jötunn.

This fight with The Jötunn looks quite brutal, even in its earlier beta stage. His weapon, Hellfire, is the source of his power. Take him down and you’ll be able to use it for yourself, too.

Swordsman sounds like it might have some substance to it, then. We also know there’s a progression system that sees players upgrade armor and gear in a hub world, but putting on heavier armor will also reduce your speed in combat. We’ll be excited to see how those systems handle in the full game, but it certainly sounds like the game is doing a lot to separate itself from its inspirations at this stage.

Swordsman is aiming to launch later this year on PC VR and PSVR headsets. Looking forward to the game? Let us know in the comments below!

Stride Goes Beyond Mirror’s Edge VR In New Trailer, Early Access Soon

Joy Way’s Stride is coming to Early Access this month, and a new trailer sees the game go beyond its Mirror’s Edge VR inspirations.

When we first reported on Stride a few months back, we couldn’t ignore how similar the game looked to EA’s Mirror’s Edge series. Not only was the free-running mechanic very similar but the visual design was practically identical. But this week’s new trailer debuts an Endless Mode in which new buildings spawn in the distance, allowing you to free-run to your heart’s content.

There will still be enemies in this mode but, notably, the game’s art style seems to have mixed things up a little, with a new color palette that gives it a bit more of its own identity. Even if it’s still quite similar, it’s good to see the game distinguishing itself from its inspirations a little.

Endless Mode is one of three arcade-style options that will be releasing in short succession starting this month. Also coming is an Arena Mode with waves of enemies to take out and Time Chase Mode to put your skills to the test with. Joy Way hasn’t said which mode will be available first, nor in which order the other two will follow.

After they’re out, though, the developer will double down on finishing the game’s campaign for a full release. For now, Stride is only confirmed for PC VR, but Joy Way also says it will keep us up-to-date about possible Quest and PSVR versions. Fingers crossed those happen.
