Something for the Weekend: PlayStation VR Black Friday EU Savings

It’s that special time of year again where every retailer goes discount crazy in the run-up to Christmas. Attracting customers with offers and discounts galore – some better than others. While Black Friday may still be a few days away, the EU PlayStation Store started its offerings on Friday just gone, so it seemed apt to feature those deals today. All these deals end at 11.59pm GMT on Monday 26th November 2018.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission

A platform title from the team at Sony Japan Studio, Astro Bot Rescue Mission was well received when it launched last month for PlayStation VR. VRFocus commented in its review: “While Astro Bot Rescue Mission isn’t quite as charming as Moss, or as superbly crafted as Mario Odyssey, it is a great old-school platformer for the VR era, bringing some of the best features of both 2D and 3D platformers of old and incorporating VR in a way that doesn’t feel awkward. This is a fun, lighthearted way to spend some time in VR, and worth checking out.”

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is on sale for £19.99 GBP, reduced from £34.99.

Astro Bot: Rescue MissionThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR

Christmas 2017 proved to be a bumper year for VR content, with Bethesda releasing DOOM VFR and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR. Even though the latter videogame was a few years old by then the addition of VR proved to be a wise choice, with VRFocus writing in its review: “for those who dreamed of a truly immersive role-playing experience, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VRis simply the best opportunity available today.”

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is on sale for £19.99, reduced from £47.99.

Farpoint is a sci-fi adventure where you find yourself stranded on an alien world filled with all sorts of nasty hostiles. Another title that benefits from owning PlayStation Aim, Firewall Zero Hour is a team-based online multiplayer from First Contact Entertainment. Receiving a five-star review from VRFocus, we said: “Firewall Zero Hour has managed to avoid many of the common pitfalls of VR online multiplayer’s and add its own interesting twist to the military FPS genre. The lobby system could use some improvements, but otherwise its a finely crafted title that will be of great interest to FPS fans.”

Budget Cuts

Budget Cuts is a great title, with substantial story and meaty, challenging gameplay, and an entertaining style, but it does suffer from some significant performance problems that do detract from the experience. Budget Cuts could be elevated from good to utterly brilliant if it is given a little more time in the oven to bake in and correct the issues.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty preview of Budget Cuts.

Budget Cuts is available now for £19.99 (GBP) down from the usual £22.99.

Shooty Fruity screenshot

Shooty Fruity

“Despite entertaining and satisfying basic gameplay, Shooty Fruity ultimately fails to rise above its roots as a wave shooter, with simplistic visual style, lack of story or multiplayer. It also aims to copy the supermarket setting a little too well, resulting in the annoying voice and muzak-style background music, which doesn’t help endear it to the audience. Shooty Fruity is a fun way to kill a couple of hours, but offers little else.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty review of Shooty Fruity.

Shooty Fruity is available now for £8.99 (GBP) down from £14.99.

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018 (Formally VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club)

“VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club remains one of the best sports experiences VR has to offer. More than that however, it’s also one of the best social VR experiences currently available, with the tension of competition and the misery of defeat likely to help make new friends (and potentially enemies) across the VR community. VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club is a welcome foundation for sports simulations in VR, and with the FIFA franchise now surpassing 25 editions (not including the many spin-offs such as FIFA Street and FIFA World Cup), it’s a wonder to think exactly how much of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club will remain in VR football 25 years from now.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club.

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018 is available now for £4.49 (GBP) down from £10.99.

Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR screenshot2

Crisis on the Planet of the Apes

Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR is by no means one of the best VR experiences out there, but as a film tie-in it certainly sets the bar high. Because it’s so closely linked with its film brethren is the possible reason for the linearity, playing out as an interactive movie sequence. There also seems to be no additional extras involved, nothing to find or keep you coming back for more, so once completed – it shouldn’t take any longer than two hours to finish on normal – that’s your lot. If you’re a fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise then Crisis on the Planet of the Apes VR is certainly worth checking out, everyone else may find it too constrained and short lived.” – Read VRFocus’ Senior Staff Writer Peter Graham’s review of Crisis On The Planet Of The Apes VR.

Crisis On The Planet Of The Apes VR is available now for £7.99 (GBP) down from £10.99.

That is all for this week but remember that VRFocus gathers all the best sales and deals every week, so check back next weekend at the same time to discover more.

Holiday Cheer in Space with EVE: Valkyrie Warzone Winter Update

EVE: Valkyrie has been the introduction to virtual reality (VR) for a number of players, acting as the first look into the possibilities of immersive technology. With the Warzone update, VR and non-VR players to play together. CCP Games have new released the Winter Update for the title, bringing some new tools and features for players to enjoy.

The Winter Update introduces a number of new features for the EVE: Valkyrie Warzone community. The first is the much requested Custom Matches, which means players no longer need to wait for a specific game mode to be available, since players can set up their own matches using EVE: Valkyrie Warzone‘s official dedicated servers. The lobby area can be controlled using passcodes, private invites and a public game browser. Users can also select specific options for map rotation and game mode as well as several other settings.

EVE Valkyrie nightyard3

For player-run tournaments, many people want to get a close view of the action without running the risk of getting blown up themselves. For these users, Spectator Mode is now available, letting users follow the action either by zooming around the battlefield as a third-person camera, or pcik a viewing angle from fixed hotspots in key areas of the map.

Also newly introduced is support for Tobii and TrackIR head-tracking, which offers a more level playing-field to players both in and out of VR, with non-VR players able to use gesture control to survey the battlefield in a similar way to VR players. The update also implements the ‘look to lock’ feature for non-VR players

As a celebration of the launch of the EVE: Online Lifeblood expansion, a new map inspired by the expansion is being introduced. The Moon Refinery map is set against the stark scenery of a moon mining facility, populated with various mining and industrial ships familiar to players of EVE: Online and offering a spectacular visual display of laser fire and explosions.

A video trailer for the new Winter Update is available to view below. As always, VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest news on developments in EVE:Valkyrie Warzone.

‘EVE: Valkyrie’ Winter Update Adds Custom Matches, Spectator Mode & New Map

CCP may have shuttered their VR game-producing branches, but EVE: Valkyrie (2016), the studio’s multiplayer arcade dogfighter set in the EVE universe, lives on with the addition of support for traditional monitors. Launched today across all platforms including PSVR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive comes the Winter Update which includes custom matches, spectator mode, a new map, and support for TrackIR and Tobii for non-VR players.

One of the most important parts of the update is invariably the ability to make your own custom matches. Now you’ll be able to host your own matches on EVE: Valkyrie’s dedicated servers where you can set up lobbies with passcodes, create private invites, and cycle through maps and several game modes. Make every ship ridiculously overpowered, underpowered, use only certain weapons—it’s up to you.

CCP says Spectator Mode lets you either observe a match in progress from fixed hotspots scattered throughout the map, or fly around at will in a third-person ship-anchored POV, although we haven’t confirmed if the last one is capable in VR considering how nauseating it sounds.

Tying EVE: Valkyrie even closer to the EVE universe, CCP is including a new Moon Refinery map in celebration of EVE Online’s recent ‘Lifeblood’ expansion. Set in the midst of a moon mining operation, the map is populated with a few choice ships from EVE Online.

The studio also added support for Tobii and TrackIR head-tracking cameras, letting gamers with traditional monitors use head gestures to look around the battlefield in what promises to inch somewhat closer the benefits of actual VR headsets. CCP says the feature allows non-VR players to take advantage of the head-tracked ‘look-to-lock’ weapon functionality present in the VR experience of the game.

Latest EVE: Valkyrie Patch Turns It Into A HOTAS Paradise

Vision and control were at the heart of the latest update for CCP Games’ space shooter EVE: Valkyrie in the first significant update since the introduction of the Warzone update in September, which brought cross-platform play between VR and non-VR gamers.

According to the note, CCP Games took community feedback into account with this latest update which included amongst its more notable additions support for NVIDIA Surround, AMD EyeFinity and, for those of you who like your monitors super wide, or rather ultrawide EVE: Valkyrie now caters for the high end gaming monitors that operate at 21:9.

Onto controls and fans and enthusiasts of HOTAS (aka Hands On Throttle-And-Stick) controllers will be very pleased indeed with the addition of support and specfic (and customisable) control schemes for the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X, Logitech Saitek HOTAS X52, Logitech Saitek HOTAS X52 Pro, Saitek X-55 Rhino HOTAS, Logitech X-56 HOTAS, Thrustmaster Warthog Joystick & Throttle and Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick.

And, if you’re more enclined to fly by the seat of your… mouse, there’s also a new control scheme for it that removes the need for a mouse lock key, allowing pilots to constantly and smoothly move and turn with mouse movements.

You can find the list of bug fixes and adjustments in the patch notes below.

VRFocus will bring you more news on EVE: Valyrie soon

EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone Launched on PlayStation 4

Earlier this year CCP Games announced that EVE: Valkyrie would be opened up to players who do not use virtual reality (VR). The announcement led to a combination of excitement and speculation, with some wondering what this meant for the VR industry as a whole. Players will now have a chance to find out for themselves what the experience will be like with the launch of the expansion on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR.

Players who are new to the world of EVE: Valkyrie will be able to purchase EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone as a bundle that includes all previous content as well as the new Warzone expansion. Gameplay has been re-balanced so players using VR don’t have an advantage against players just using TVs or monitors.

The Warzone expansion doesn’t just add non-VR player support, a roster of new ships are now available for both rookie pilots and experienced veterans, along with new maps and multiple game modes.

CCP say they are already at work developing new updates and features for EVE: Valkyrie. The next free update is due to hit sometime ‘this Winter’ and will include Custom Matches, which will allow users to set up their own lobbies and private rooms, able to choose a range of options to create one of the titular Warzones.

You can watch a trailer for the PlayStation 4 version of EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone below.

VRFocus will continue to bring you updates on EVE: Valkrie as they becomes available.

NVIDIA’s Latest Game Ready Drivers Support Project CARS 2 and EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone

There are some big PC videogame releases happening this month and as usual NVIDIA has ensured players using its graphics cards are fully setup and supported by rolling out new Game Ready Drivers, with Project CARS 2 and EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone both on the list.

Yesterday VRFocus reported on Slightly Mad Studios announcing that Project CARS 2 would be launching this Friday 22nd September, with support for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Featuring all-new motorsports, 180+ cars from dozens of the worlds top car makers and changing weather conditions across 140 tracks, the PC version has a host of video options to adjust, including Texture Filtering, V-Sync, MSAA, Post AA, Super Sampling, Post Processing Filters, Rain Drops, Crepuscular Rays, and many more to get the videogame looking just right.

EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone is CCP Games’ latest update to the popular online combat title which is due to arrive on 26th September. Warzone is about expanding EVE: Valkyrie’s cross-platform support even further so that PC and PlayStation 4 owners who don’t have headsets can still enjoy the sci-fi shooter.

NVIDIA’s Game Ready Driver for EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone will add support for Multi-Res Shading (MRS) from the NVIDIA VRWorks SDK for both the desktop and virtual reality (VR) version of the videogame. MRS is a new rendering technique for VR whereby each part of an image is rendered at a resolution that better matches the pixel density of the warped image.  Multi-Res Shading uses NVIDIA’s multi-projection architecture to render multiple scaled viewports in a single pass, which could improve performance by up to 51 percent it claims.

If you own an NVIDIA graphics card and plan on purchasing either of these titles the Game Ready Drivers are available now.

Eve: Valkyrie – Warzone Goes Cross-Platform is This a bad Sign for VR?

Virtual reality (VR) fans may know Eve: Valkyrie from their release on the Oculus Rift in March 2016 and then consequent release to the PlayStation VR and HTC Vive CCP has slowly been adding new maps, mods achievements and improvements.

Today CCP Games announced that on September the 26th Eve: Valkyrie will become Eve: Valkyrie – Warzone, a new expansion with some major updates. Besides adding new ships, maps, weapons, with a progression system for each ship and a new game mode of ‘capture the flag’ and new wormhole with weekly challenges, the expansion also has some big new for non-VR gamers.

Eve: Valkyrie – Warzone will be cross platform. This means that for the first time, both VR gamers and non-VR gamers will be able to play together. This means if you just own a PC or PlayStation 4 you’ll be able to play alongside VR gamers on the RIFT, VIVE or PlayStation VR. It’ll cost you $29.99 to buy it, but if you already own EVE: Valkyrie you’ll be getting this expansion for free.

Andrew Willians, Lead Game designer at CCP Newcastle Studio said “ Not having access to VR hardware will no longer hold gamers back from diving weapons-first into intense and highly competitive space combat with friends.” Whilst Hilmar Veigar Petersson, CEO of CCP Games said, “ We’re starting the next step in EVE: Valkyrie’s journey by bringing this great game to an even wide audience – those who haven’t made the leap into VR yet – all while we continue to experiment with additional unannounced VR projects in development.”

Is the next step in any VR game going back to original gaming audiences? Or has the game run it’s cycle for VR and CCP want to focus on something else, and make money off this game to further experiment in VR. Or are they believe ‘cross reality’ as they coin it in the trailer, as the future? Is this what their fans have been asking for? Or is VR just not selling well enough? Or is this actually a great way to draw more players to get into VR? What are you thoughts?
