Alien: Isolation VR Mod Updated With Epic Games Store Support
The VR mod for horror game Alien: Isolation has been updated to include support for the Epic Games Store version, which was available for free for one day in late December.
Released in 2014, Alien: Isolation is a survival horror game set 15 years after the first Alien movie. You play as Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda, navigating your way around the ship and hiding from xenomorphs. A mod for the game added full VR functionality, including motion controller support. Despite being fan-made, the VR mod for Alien: Isolation made it into an excellent VR survival horror title.
Back in late December, Alien: Isolation was available for free for one day only on the Epic Games Store and we encouraged anyone who was interested in trying out the VR mod to redeem a free copy. However, some of our readers soon reported that the VR mod didn’t work with the Epic Games Store version, as the mod was originally developed for the Steam release.
The creator of the mod, Nibre, released an update (the first in over two years) last week that rectifies the issue and adds support for the Epic Games Store version. If you snagged a free copy but weren’t able to get the VR mod working, you should be able to now.
You can download the new mod version over on github now and check out our guide on how to start playing Alien: Isolation in VR. And please let us know in the comments how it works out for you.
‘Elite Dangerous’ is Going Free on Epic Games Store Starting Today

Frontier Developments’ VR-compatible space sim Elite Dangerous (2014) is going free on the Epic Games Store this week.
Update (November 19th, 2020): Starting today, for the next week you’ll be able to grab and keep Elite Dangerous for free, which includes VR support for all SteamVR headsets.
It’s bound to go live any moment now, so make sure to update your Store launcher. If you’re not at home, you can always claim it on the Epic Games Store website, sign into your account, and download later.
Original Article (November 13th, 2020): Starting on Thursday, November 19th and going until the 26th, you’ll be able to download and keep Elite Dangerous for free. You can add it to your wishlist by clicking the heart symbol on the game’s store page.
This also includes one of the game’s biggest DLC packs, Horizons, which in 2015 brought to the space-faring simulator the ability to land and drive on the surface of planets, craft weapons, and participate in multicrew action. It’s been free on all platforms since late October, representing a load of previously-paid content now baked into the base game.
On PC, Elite Dangerous was one of the first truly massive space sims to offer VR support, letting users with SteamVR headsets pilot space ships through the game’s open-universe sandbox to fight, trade, cooperate, and mine. It was a great first ‘wow’ moment, and still is for anyone with a PC VR headset looking for immersion.
With the free release of the game on Epic Games Store, Frontier is seemingly drumming up a new player base in preparation of their next big DLC launch, Odyssey, which brings first-person shooting action to the game.
Note: We learned last month that VR support for Odyssey will only be available when users fly down to planets and drive along planet surfaces in their vehicles. Leaving the ship to continue on foot will bring up a 2D projected flat game screen—a definite dampener on VR enjoyment of the DLC.
Still, if you haven’t picked up Elite Dangerous by now, next week is the perfect time to jump into one of the best, most expansive VR-compatible games out there. Bring your HOTAS, make sure to study your keybindings, and hunt for a Discord to help you with all of the complex, but admittedly awesome bits in between.

Sony Takes Minority Stake In Epic Games With $250M Investment
Today Sony announced a strategic investment of $250 million in Epic Games to take a minority stake in the company. Epic Games is responsible for the Unreal Engine, Fortnite, Epic Games Store, and more.
Through this investment Sony has acquired a “minority interest” in Epic Games through a “wholly-owned subsidiary” of Sony. The nature of the partnership and what exactly this means for both companies going forward is not known, but it seems to be a rather mutual broadening of collaboration.
According to a press release, “The investment allows Sony and Epic to aim to broaden their collaboration across Sony’s leading portfolio of entertainment assets and technology, and Epic’s social entertainment platform and digital ecosystem to create unique experiences for consumers and creators.”
The move comes after Sony originally refused to allow crossplay on Fortnite to try and lock people into the PS4 ecosystem. They’ve since backtracked that stance and allow full crossplay with other systems.
Notably, in the press release, Epic Games Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney explains the focus on establishing an “even more open” ecosystem as part of the reasoning for the investment: “Together we strive to build an even more open and accessible digital ecosystem for all consumers and content creators alike,” says Sweeney.
Given that context, it’s unlikely this investment will lead to Epic exclusives on PlayStation systems, but it could perhaps signal a move to connect the PSN Store and Epic Games Store in some way to bridge the gap between console and PC gaming, similar to what Xbox does with its Xbox PC app and Game Pass offers. That’s purely speculation though.
