Ubisoft’s Eagle Flight & Space Junkies Will be Free for VR Arcades For a Limited Time

Space Junkies new header

As COVID-19 lockdowns begin to ease in some countries around the world, businesses are beginning to reopen which also includes location-based entertainment (LBE) venues like VR arcades. Today, LBE content distribution platform SynthesisVR has announced that Ubisoft’s Eagle Flight Arcade and Space Junkies Arcade will be license-free to operators for a limited time.

EagleFlight_E32016 (2)

The gesture is to help commercial premises in these difficult times, as the public are slowly allowed to resume social activities. So from now until 30th September (11.59pm PST) those arcades which use SynthesisVR can access Eagle Flight Arcade and Space Junkies Arcade for free. If they already subscribe then no additional steps are required.

Eagle Flight was one of Ubisoft’s earliest videogames developed exclusively for virtual reality (VR) headsets like Oculus Rift. The gameplay allows you to fly around a deserted Paris 50 years after humans have disappeared. You can fly past iconic landmarks and race though narrow streets, competing against other players and protecting territory.

Space Junkies on the other hand, is a sci-fi first-person shooter where you face off PvP style in orbital arenas. Equipped with backpacks, in these zero-g matches every direction could spell danger. You’re equipped with a basic loadout with more powerful weapons littered around the environment, offering a chance to improve your odds or get caught in a trap.

Space Junkies

The measure is one of a number big companies have been rolling out to help the LBE VR industry since it was effectively closed down several months ago. Hologate, for example, developed new Hygiene and Safety Standards which could be used by most venues, Zero Latency has been installing systems remotely and Vertigo Arcades has just launched team-based experience Ghost Patrol VR.

VRFocus’ The Virtual Arena has been closely following developments, from reopening plans to how the pandemic will affect the industry going into the future. As VR arcades begin to reopen VRFocus will keep you updated on the latest industry news.

Ubisoft Now Hiring For VR Project In India

Ubisoft looks like it is expanding its VR efforts even further beyond our initial reports.

In early September we reported the discovery of several new listings at one of Ubisoft’s three Blue Byte offices in Dusseldorf, Germany. At the time, the company told us it was hiring both for its location-based VR experiences and “a new AAA VR project”. The Ubisoft Reflections team in Newcastle, UK, is also hiring for a VR-focused Lead Character Artist role.

A New Challenger Approaches

This month, though, we’ve discovered yet more listings for a VR project, this time in Pune, India. There the company is looking for Development Tester, Unity Developer, VFX Artist, Art Director, Level Designer and Character Artist roles.

The listings themselves don’t reveal much. The Unity Developer role does, however, state that the successful applicant “will be working closely with Lead/Technical Manager/Producer to develop and provide solutions on VR devices in the process of creating games by maintaining high coding standards.”

Initially, we’d have assumed this team would be assisting in the creation of the VR game in development at Blue Byte. The existence of Art Director and Level Designer roles, however, has us wondering if it could be separate. In a listing for a Game Director for the VR project at Blue Byte, Ubisoft states the game will be “developed across multiple studios,” though.

Reports from earlier this year suggested Facebook signed a deal with Ubisoft for two VR games. One would be a new entry in the Splinter Cell series, another in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The rate at which the company is now hiring for VR projects lends some weight to those reports.

But questions remain. Is Ubisoft developing one game at a time? Or does the use of multiple studios suggest the company is developing them simultaneously? We likely won’t know for some time yet.

Ubisoft CEO On Rumored Facebook Deal: ‘Good Games May Help VR Take Off’

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot didn’t deny reports of a deal with Facebook for new VR games in its investor call this week.

Earlier this month rumors surfaced stating that Ubisoft had signed exclusive Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed VR games to the Oculus platform. According to the reports, the move is part of Facebook’s push to get more content on its VR headsets. At the time, neither Facebook nor Ubisoft responded to the reports.

During a quarterly investor call yesterday, however, the rumor was directly mentioned to Guillemot. The CEO wasn’t asked to confirm its validity but instead asked about Ubisoft’s approach to VR. “On the VR side, we think seamless, frictionless, and good entry prices, and good games, could help this business to take off because it provides a good immersion for players,” Guillemot replied. “But we need to make sure those elements are there to make it actually grow,” he said.

It’s an interesting answer, given that this was an opportunity for Ubisoft to deny the rumor if it was fake. Still, don’t take it as confirmation of any sort. Ubisoft already has a handful of VR games to its name including Eagle Flight and Star Trek: Bridge Crew.

We don’t know if the supposed Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed VR games would appear on Rift, Quest or both. Guillemot’s comments around accessibility definitely seem in-line with Facebook’s push for more approachable VR headsets, though. Quest offers the most friction-free access to VR yet and the updated Rift S removes a lot of the hassle of the original.

Still, we’ll have to wait and see if there’s any validity to these reports.

3 Ways To Visit Notre-Dame Cathedral In VR

Notre Dame

The beautiful medieval Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris suffered a devastating fire yesterday during renovations. The spire and most of the roof were unfortunately lost- but luckily the rest of the building remains intact.

President Macron has vowed to rebuild and restore the beloved cathedral. But while that happens, it will probably be partially or entirely inaccessible.

Thankfully, you can use the power of virtual reality to visit Notre-Dame without even leaving your room.

TARGO 360° Documentary

TARGO is a French immersive video production company. Just two months ago they released an 8 minute 360° documentary on Notre-Dame cathedral.

The documentary focuses on the current “Rector-Archpriest” of the cathedral, as well as covering its history. The camera takes you to every corner of Notre-Dame, even on top of one of the towers.

TARGO’s videos are viewable through various VR platforms and video providers:

  • Oculus Go / Gear VR: search “The Man Behind Notre-Dame” in the main menu

  • PlayStation VR: use the YouTube VR app, WITHIN app, or LittleStar app
  • PC VR: use the YouTube VR app, WITHIN app, or LittleStar app

Google Earth VR

Google Earth uses a combination of satellite and aerial photography and high detail 3D scans to digitally recreate the real world. One of the cities with a full detail scan is Paris. Google Earth VR lets you scale the world however you like and physically walk around it in virtual reality.

Google Earth VR is available for free on Oculus Rift and SteamVR.

You can find Notre-Dame in Google Earth VR by opening the main menu and clicking the search icon at the bottom. Just search Notre-Dame and select it. We recommend changing the time of day to a sunrise of sunset to see the warm glow on the stone.

Eagle Flight

A less obvious way to virtually see the cathedral is in Ubisoft’s 2016 title Eagle Flight. You fly as an eagle in first person with the simple goal of building your nest on the tallest point you can find amidst the overgrown ruins of Paris in the far future. The first nest is actually on Notre-Dame cathedral itself.

When we reviewed the game we enjoyed it, calling it “a real treat to play” and giving it 7.5/10. If you’re a fan of Notre-Dame or Paris in general you’ll probably love it.

Eagle Flight is available on Oculus Rift, SteamVR, and and PlayStation VR.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission

A platform title from the team at Sony Japan Studio, Astro Bot Rescue Mission was well received when it launched last month for PlayStation VR. VRFocus commented in its review: “While Astro Bot Rescue Mission isn’t quite as charming as Moss, or as superbly crafted as Mario Odyssey, it is a great old-school platformer for the VR era, bringing some of the best features of both 2D and 3D platformers of old and incorporating VR in a way that doesn’t feel awkward. This is a fun, lighthearted way to spend some time in VR, and worth checking out.”

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is on sale for £19.99 GBP, reduced from £34.99.

Another title that benefits from owning PlayStation Aim, Firewall Zero Hour is a team-based online multiplayer from First Contact Entertainment. Receiving a five-star review from VRFocus, we said: “Firewall Zero Hour has managed to avoid many of the common pitfalls of VR online multiplayer’s and add its own interesting twist to the military FPS genre. The lobby system could use some improvements, but otherwise its a finely crafted title that will be of great interest to FPS fans.”

DOOM VFR screenshot

DOOM VFR

“Ultimately DOOM VFR stands as a fine example of just what can be achieved with the FPS genre in VR as of today, lining-up against Robo Recall as an action-heavy experience that throws the rulebook out of the window. It’s true that the visual quality has suffered dramatically and the control systems could be seen as far too awkward by many, but the fact that DOOM VFR pushes so hard against the VR grain makes it well worth any PlayStation VR owner’s time and money.” – Read VRFoucs’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of DOOM VFR.

DOOM VFR is available now for £14.99 (GBP) down from the usual £19.99.

Light Tracer Screenshot

Light Tracer

Light Tracer is a well-crafted VR platform title. Once you get used to the controls, it becomes challenging enough to keep you coming back for more. There are some very frustrating elements, but not enough to spoil the gameplay entirely. Having said that, Light Tracer is at its best when played in relatively small doses. Like a plate of snacks to nibble on instead of a feast, but still just as tasty.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Rebecca Hills-Duty’s review of Light Tracer.

Light Tracer is only £3.29 (GBP) down from £9.99.

Bloody Zombies

Bloody Zombies

“The visual design of Bloody Zombies has obviously taken VR into account throughout, with the 2D characters appearing like cardboard cutouts when the VR player moves their view alongside the action opposed to in front of it. This is obviously why nDreams – a publisher that has solely committed to VR content – took an interest in Paw Print Games’ Bloody Zombies to begin with. And they were right to do so, as while Bloody Zombies doesn’t reinvent the scrolling beat-‘em-up wheel, it does offer a convincing argument for 2D videogames making the jump to the more immersive medium.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of Bloody Zombies.

Bloody Zombies is currently on sale for £4.49 (GBP) down from £10.99.

Football Nation VR Tournament 2018 (Formally VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club)

“VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club remains one of the best sports experiences VR has to offer. More than that however, it’s also one of the best social VR experiences currently available, with the tension of competition and the misery of defeat likely to help make new friends (and potentially enemies) across the VR community. VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club is a welcome foundation for sports simulations in VR, and with the FIFA franchise now surpassing 25 editions (not including the many spin-offs such as FIFA Street and FIFA World Cup), it’s a wonder to think exactly how much of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club will remain in VR football 25 years from now.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of VRFC: Virtual Reality Football Club.

“The achievement made by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is one by way of both hardware and design to capitalise upon this. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR’s level of immersion is simply fantastic, and while Bethesda Softworks could well have gone the route of DOOM VFR and created a shorter spin-off experience, developing a brand new The Elder Scrolls instalment specifically for VR would have taken many years and far too much in the way of resources for what is still a nascent audience. As it stands some may find the price point of the videogame a bitter pill to swallow, but for those who dreamed of a truly immersive role-playing experience, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is simply the best opportunity available today.” – Read VRFocus’ Editor Kevin Joyce’s review of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR here.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is £34.39 (GBP) down from the usual price of £49.99.
