EA Struck Down The ‘Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 VR’ Fan Remake

EA Struck Down The ‘Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 VR’ Fan Remake

Just as the internet started to get excited about the prospect of one of the best PC strategy games of all-time, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, receiving a fan remake built from the ground-up for VR devices, Electronic Arts, the publisher behind the original game, stepped in to officially strike down the project.

According to a post on the Unreal Engine forums the remake’s creator, Adam Horvath, received the following message from EA’s Permission Requests Team:

Dear Adam,

Thank you for your interest in Electronic Arts Inc. EA appreciates the passion that players like you have for our games, and we’re always excited to see the creativity that comes from our community. While we appreciate your enthusiasm for our Command & Conquer: Red Alert games, we are unable to authorize your request to distribute a remake VR version of our Red Alert 2 game, regardless of whether it is commercial. We greatly respect our fans and hope this response does not diminish your interest in our games.

Kind regards,
LC
EA Permission Requests Team

It’s unfortunate news, but it doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Publishers have the right to squash projects like this from rising up due to the potential infringement on copyrights and competition regarding potentially existing projects in their pipelines. Whereas Sega hires fan modders to make games (Christian Whitehead, a prolific Sonic modder, is now working on Sonic Mania), Nintendo is well-known for its displeasure regarding fan creations, such as AM2R and Pokemon Uranium. It appears that EA falls in line with Nintendo’s views on remakes.

While this doesn’t mean EA is working on a VR strategy game in the C&C franchise, it’s certainly a fun thing to think about. The most likely cause for the decline of permission is simply that they don’t want someone potentially profiting off of their work.

We’ve reached out to Horvath, the remake’s creator, about the situation and his future plans and will keep you updated on the latest developments.

Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission Gets Release Date for PlayStation VR

This festive season is lining up to be a good one for Star Wars fans with plenty of new content coming out. For film goers there’s the upcoming film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and for gamers EA will be releasing the final expansion for Star Wars Battlefront, called Rogue One: Scarif tying into the film. There’s also the little matter of the virtual reality (VR) DLC, Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission. Now EA has announced when PlayStation VR owners will be able to get their hands on the content.

In a blog posting the publisher has revealed Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission will be available on 6th December, as free DLC for those that own the base videogame. The title gives players control of the iconic X-wing fighter, allowing would be pilots to brush up on their piloting skills, by carrying out an important mission for the Rebellion.

Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission was first unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June, and since then very little information has been released other than some teasing screenshots. With the new Star Wars Battlefront DLC so closely tied into the new film its likely the creators didn’t want to give too much away.

If you’ve not got the PlayStation VR then there’s always free experience Trials on Tatooine for HTC Vive by ILMxLAB. This offers a wholly different gameplay experience, putting players on the planet surface trying to repair the Millennium Falcon and getting to wield a lightsaber as Imperial forces come into attack.

That’s not all ILMxLAB has to offer on the VR front. The division of LucasFilm is also working on another Star Wars VR title, this time starring iconic villain, Darth Vader.

As VRFocus learns more about ILMxLAB’s VR projects we’ll bring you the latest details.

PlayStation VR’s Star Wars: Rogue One VR Experience Dated

PlayStation VR’s Star Wars: Rogue One VR Experience Dated

It’s just a few weeks now until the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in theaters on December 15th, but the anticipated tie-in VR experience from DICE is even closer than that.

Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission, as the piece is rather clumsily called, will be releasing on PlayStation VR on December 6th, according to a new blog from publisher EA. It will be free to anyone that owns a PlayStation 4 copy of last year’s Star Wars: Battlefront, which you can currently pick up for around $15 – $20 at online retailers, though the jury’s still out on if the experience alone will be worth that price. We’ve reached out to EA to ask if there might be any way for those that don’t own the game to see the experience.

As the name suggests, Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission puts you in the cockpit of the iconic spacecraft for the first time in VR (officially, at least). You’ll undergo an “important mission” for the Rebellion, heading into battle. From the looks of concept art, the piece will feature the new U-Wing ship, seen in the upcoming movie. There are no lightsabers or laser battles here; fans looking for that will have to check out Trials on Tatooine, another free experience from ILMxLAB available on the HTC Vive.

It’s looking like it will be another short experience, similar to the Call of Duty Infinite Warfare: Jackal Assault VR piece that launched on PS VR for free a few weeks back. Hopefully we won’t be left underwhelmed by this one, though. More Rogue One-themed content will also be launching for Star Wars: Battlefront on the same day.

This isn’t all that’s going on in the world of Star Wars and VR right now. Also recently revealed was Rogue One: Recon, a short 360 degree movie, again telling the story of an X-Wing pilot, produced by ILMxLAB. The studio is also working on a fully VR interactive experience, telling a story starring iconic Star Wars villain, Darth Vader.
