One Of PS5’s Incompatible PSVR Games Will Be Patched To Add Support

Around a month ago, Sony revealed a list of 10 PS4 games it has confirmed wouldn’t be backwards compatible with PS5. Of those games, two were on PSVR. But soon, two will become one.

Dual-wielding wave shooter DWVR will be adding support for PS5 via an update, developer Mad Triangles has confirmed to UploadVR. The team’s Victor Blanko noted that he hopes to have the patch live by the end of this month, though nothing’s set in stone right now. PS5 itself will launch November 12th in some regions and November 19th in others.

DWVR PS5 Support Confirmed

DWVR is a fairly traditional VR wave shooter, influenced by games like Doom. You dual-wield machine guns and gun down demons. All in a day’s work for the average VR headset owner. To play the game on PSVR you’ll need the PS4 Camera adaptor, which you can apply for for free if you already own the headset.

Sadly we haven’t heard if the other incompatible PSVR game, Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey, will also be patched to support PS5. Publisher Ubisoft has also called into question whether or not some of its PSVR titles, including Werewolves Within and Star Trek Bridge Crew, will be compatible with the console in a blog post that was taken down shortly after going live.

Backwards compatibility will be the only way to use VR on PS5, as new PS5 games cannot support Sony’s original headset. That means that PS4 games with PSVR support that are also coming to PS5 will not feature that support in the next-generation versions. These games include Hitman 3 and No Man’s Sky, the latter of which this week confirmed will offer the PS4 version to any PS5 customers, too.

PlayStation 5’s HD Camera Isn’t PlayStation VR Compatible

PlayStation 5 - HD Camera

There’s a month to go until PlayStation 5 begins to roll out worldwide with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) previously reassuring fans that PlayStation VR will be supported. However, it’s not entirely cut and dry as PlayStation 4’s camera needs an adapter whilst the new HD Camera won’t work with the virtual reality (VR) headset it’s been confirmed.

PlayStation VR

A recent blog posting notes that: “the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR on PS5.” So owners will definitely need that PlayStation Camera adaptor previously mentioned which SIE will be providing for free. Currently, no details regarding what the adaptor looks like or how to order it have been revealed – so there’s no telling if they’ll be available for the launch of PlayStation 5.

As for the HD Camera, that’s another telling indication that SIE has a new headset in the works – as many patents have indicated. If the new camera can’t track the old headset then a new system could be in place. Hopefully, a PlayStation VR 2 won’t need the HD Camera, going down the route of inside-out tracking like the Oculus Quest.

Additionally, while most PlayStation VR videogames will work on PlayStation 5, SIE has confirmed a couple that won’t, Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey and DWVR by Mad Triangles.

PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 will see a split launch worldwide in November, with the console available in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea on 12th November. The rest of the world will then have to wait until 19th November to get their hands on the new hardware. The standard disc drive edition will retail for £449.99 GBP/$499.99 USD whilst the Digital Edition will cost £359.99/$399.99.

Also worth remembering is that PlayStation Move, Aim and DualShock 4 wireless controllers will work with PlayStation 5 but the latter controller won’t support PlayStation 5 titles. For further updates on SIE’s VR plans, keep reading VRFocus.

DWVR Shoots Towards PlayStation VR Release with New Trailer

Virtual reality (VR) action shooter DWVR was released on to Steam Early Access for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift late in 2016. The title has now been announced as heading to PlayStation VR with a new trailer.

The fast-placed shooter involves the player utilising a variety of different weaponry to battle enemies. Weapons available include swords, guns and even magic spells. The developers Mad Triangles are an independent development studio who have aimed to create fast-paced gameplay where the motion controllers become extensions of your arm, emphasising the intuitive design.

Locomotion is handled in two ways, teleportation or smooth motion. Smooth motion locomotion was added as an option after high demand from the player base, who were no longer satisfied with teleportation options, an increasingly common refrain from VR gamers.

The version coming to PlayStation VR is expected to run at 90fps on a PlayStation 4 Pro, 60 on the regular PlayStation 4. Graphics have remained the same as the PC version. Supported controls include Dual Shock, AIM Controller and Move Controllers. Smooth movement options are only available with AIM Controller or Dual Shock.

A firm release date is yet to be set, but the development team are hoping for a 26th September, 2017. If this date is missed for whatever reason, the release is likely to be pushed back to 3rd October, 2017. The price point is expected to be $14.99 (USD), which matches up with the price for the PC version.

The version on the PlayStation VR is the full release, not the early access version, and all additional features on the PlayStation VR version are expected to head to the PC version soon.
