DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles Heads To Viveport

If you’re a fan of classic animated series, giant robots and outer space then we’ve got some good news for you. Especially if you also happen to own an HTC Vive. As DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles is now available for users of HTC Vive’s Viveport service.

An episodic tie-in to the DreamWorks Television series for Netflix, and the latest revival of the Voltron series that first aired during the mid-eighties, a PlayStation VR version is already out as well as a standard Steam release which has support for both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. In the title, fans are able to step into the Voltron universe and become a part of the team. Taking on a number of mini challenges ranging from unlocking a console through a series of puzzles and by evading waves of enemies.

In DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles, you follow the character of Lance who has stumbled upon the ruins of a lost race of aliens.  Unfortunately that discovery also happens to be rather deep within enemy space, and his misfortunes mount when he releases a seemingly unstoppable force that could be a threat to just about everyone.

DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles is set loosely in the second season of DreamWorks’ Voltron: Legendary Defender, and acts as a side story for all of our characters.” Explained the title’s Lead Designer Dan Kingdom to the HTC Vive blog. “We don’t reference any major plotlines from the show itself, so even if you’ve never watched an episode of the show, you can jump in and enjoy it. However, if you really know your Voltron lore, then there are some very deliberate character moments and dialogue that you should be able to pick up on, along with a brief character cameo from the show.”

There’s also plenty for those keen on the details according to Kingdom. “We’ve also gone to great lengths to recreate as many of the small visual details as possible from the iconic locations, so whether you’re standing inside the Blue Lion cockpit or on the bridge of the Castle of Lions, there’s always something to see no matter where you look.”

You can see a trailer for the title on Viveport below. VRFocus will bring you more news about Vive and Viveport in the near future.

Digital Domain on Staying at the Forefront of Technological Innovation in VR and AR

At the recent Virtual Reality Developers Conference (VRDC) in San Francisco VRFocus spoke with Aruna Inversin, Creative Director and VFX Supervisor at Digital Domain, discussing the company’s NBA app for the Google Daydream, how Digital Domain cater to directors wanting to get into virtual reality (VR) and how it’s accessing the Chinese market.

Digital Domain is well known for its special and visual effects in Hollywood Blockbuster films and have won numerous awards working on films such as Titanic (1997) or Benjamin Button (2008). Inversin explained that Digital Domain is always looking to be at the forefront of technological innovation and this is why he’s come to attend VRDC. To look at the latest technology and see what’s being showcased.

Inversin has most recently worked on the Google Daydream NBA app, where viewers get to sit five feet away from an NBA star who acknowledges their existence in the room. The first season was done last year and it looks like the NBA app will also be going to other VR platforms with the second season perhaps doing so as well. Inversin also said that Digital Domain not only focus on sports, but are interested in people who are looking at new innovative ways to immerse users in a virtual world. Digital Domain has three teams that perhaps offer the best experience and post-production background for various forms of VR. They have a live broadcast team that shoot 360 monoscopic, a team that works with pre-rendered components from Maya and Nuke for pre-rendered stereoscopic VR (which you can’t do in real time) and another team working on real time VR and augmented reality (AR) which Inversin heads himself.

Inversin is also working on developing Digital Domain’s original IP, or original content for the Chinese Market. This may be because Digital Domain is owned by the Chinese. He explains that due to the large number of people working for Digital Domain, it allows them to look at technologies and markets in a different way because they have a longer lifespan as a company – and they need to future proof themselves. He hints at the success of Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality or Lone Echo due to both videogames being experiences where players can choose to explore rather than a choose your own adventure style videogame. Inversin explains: “sometimes you don’t want narrative, just an experience.” Perhaps this is what Digital Domain are working on with regards to creating content for Chinese location-based entertainment kiosks. Where twenty pods with VR experiences of 5-10 minutes long with original Digital Domain content or licensed content are showcased such as the work they did together with Dreamworks on Voltron VR: Chronicles.

It’s interesting to see a huge company like Digital Domain steer its way through the early waters of VR and AR. With such a large company, so closely tied with Hollywood, licensed materials, and offering various VR and AR skills, Digital Domain is one creative business to keep an eye on in the future. To learn some more tips and tricks, watch the video below.

DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles Launches With New Trailer

If you were presented with the premise of a television programme where a bunch of (mostly) teenagers in brightly coloured suits pilot giant robotic animals which are able to join together to form an even bigger giant robot that battles hostile threats from space – you’d be forgiven for just assuming that someone was talking to you about Saban’s series Power Rangers. Of course it wasn’t the only series to have that kind of plot as the television series Voltron featured some decidedly similar aspects.

Voltron VR - screenshot 1Airing in the mid-eighties the first series of Voltron (or “Lion Force Voltron“) which was itself an adaption of Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion spun off a number of different iterations and adaptions down through the years. The latest sees a new original and updated version Voltron: Legendary Defender, produced as an exclusive series for Netflix by DreamWorks Animation, it also inherited from Universal development of a live-action film adaptation of the franchise which could end up being a definitive markerpoint of the ongoing story between television series, much as DreamWorks already is with its How To Train Your Dragon franchise.

An episodic tie-in experience called DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles was revealed just under a month ago for PlayStation VR as well as HTC Vive and Oculus Rift and which has just been released. It allows fans of the series to become a part of the Voltron team and step inside the world of the Dreamworks series and embark on their own adventures through solving puzzles and taking on various challenges.

To celebrate the release, and following an earlier teaser trailer, developer and publisher Digital Domain have now released a full launch trailer for the videogame which can be bought for £10.99 (GBP).
