Report: Dreams Will Now Have PSVR Support On Day One

According to a new article from PSU, Dreams is planned to have PSVR support from day one when it launches after all. Late last year, a developer told us during a demonstration that PSVR support “won’t be in at launch” but when it did come, it would allow users to manipulate the world and objects using the PS Move wand controllers, bringing that much closer to your creation.

But now, based on reports from a recent pre-E3 preview event, it seems like the developers plans may have changed. We reached out to PSU to confirm the details of their story and they verified that Mark Healey, co-founder and creative director for Media Molecule, did in fact state it would have PSVR support from day one. We were at this preview event as well, but opted to not demo Dreams since we’d been told they weren’t discussing VR details at the event.

This is exciting news because in the past it seemed like it could have been relegated to the background as a secondary feature, but perhaps this means the majority (or all) of Dreams will function from inside a PSVR headset. If all goes well, Dreams could very well end up being one of VR’s most powerful content creation platforms to date.

Earlier this year Media Molecule’s Alex Evans even stated that he was “really hyped” for the app’s PSVR support, so all signs are pointing towards this being one to watch for VR fans.

If that’s not confirmation enough that VR is coming on day one for Dreams, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s own President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, tweeted the PSU story today. Granted, the PSVR line isn’t the headline or a prominent part of the preview, but I doubt he’d tweet out a story with such an erroneous error in it.

We reached out to Sony for comment on the revelation, but they declined to comment at this time, simply stating that more details will be coming later.

Media Molecule’s Dreams to Feature Launch Day Support for PlayStation VR

One of the big titles set to make a splash at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 next month is Media Molecules’ Dreams. Having previously created titles like LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway Unfolded, Dreams will not only boast a single-player campaign but also a ‘create mode’ for players to design their own experiences. Virtual reality (VR) compatibility was confirmed several months ago but not for launch. Now it seems as though that’s no longer the case.

Several websites have released previews of Dreams today, with PSU.com reporting that Dreams will in fact support PlayStation VR on launch day rather than as a future update. This has been further validated by Media Molecule retweeting the websites story tweet.

Officially announced during E3 2015, Dreams caught the attention of press and players alike due its gorgeous visual style  and the fact that players will be able to create and share their own ‘Dreams’. Dreams is essentially a fully featured game creation engine that PlayStation 4 users will be able to dive into and let their imagination run riot. While the creation side of Dreams will be its main selling point, Media Molecule built a campaign inside the title itself to showcase what could be achieved.

At present Media Molecule has only confirmed that PlayStation VR will support the ‘Create mode’ rather than the campaign itself. So VR users will still be able to build their own worlds and share them with the Dreams community.

Currently, the studio has yet to reveal an actual launch date for Dreams. but Media Molecule has already confirmed there will be a beta for Dreams happening later this year. A date reveal will most likely happen during E3 2018 which is only three weeks away. If it does happen, VRFocus will let you know, plus as always we’ll be at the event to bring you all the latest VR news.

Media Molecule ‘Really Hyped’ For Dreams VR Support, Early Build Already Working

Media Molecule ‘Really Hyped’ For Dreams VR Support, Early Build Already Working

Media Molecule’s upcoming PS4 exclusive, Dreams, looks like it could be PSVR’s answer to the likes of Tilt Brush and Quill, only with added game-making tools on top. Sadly, though, we don’t actually know much about the game’s VR support so far. Reassuringly, Media Molecule’s Alex Evans just confirmed the game will definitely support PSVR at some point. In fact an early build of the support is already working and it sounds very promising.

Evans said as much during an interview at this week’s London Games Festival in the UK. “The thing I’m really hyped about at the moment is the VR stuff, which we’re being coy about,” the developer said. “Because VR’s hard and it hasn’t been our focus.”

He then made sure to point out that the team didn’t yet know when VR integration would arrive in Dreams, and it may well not be on day one, though it’s definitely coming.

“We’re starting to see it come to fruition,” Evans added. “You’re in these worlds that you’ve just built on your TV, and you can create in VR as well so it’s sort of a Minority Report-type thing going on and you’re just sculpting and creating and making music and you can arrange timelines, you can do animation, you can do stop motion. In VR it all clicks in a way that is even cooler than TV.”

Earlier in the interview, Evans also pointed out that an early version of the VR support had already been integrated into builds of the game that developers can play at home (though, again, we don’t know if VR support will be included in the upcoming beta).

“As soon as [VR support] is out, you’ll be able to make a VR experience and push the medium forward,” the developer explained. “So I think what’s really interesting is we haven’t figured out– as game makers, any of us in the room haven’t figured out VR yet. We’re all trying shit out and Dreams is going to bring a whole bunch of new people and new ideas to try shit out in VR. And I think that that could really push forward the medium of VR.”

Well that’s definitely encouraging to hear. Dreams is expected to release in full later this year with the beta “coming out as soon as [Media Molecule] humanly can”. Let’s hope the VR support makes it in 2018, too.

Media Molecule’s Dreams to get PlayStation VR Compatibility

There are plenty of upcoming videogames PlayStation 4 owners are keen to get their hands on, and likely near the top of that list is Media Molecules’ Dreams, open-ended sandbox experience where you can make anything. Officially announced during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2015, it now looks like the studio is making the title compatible with PlayStation VR as well.

Dreams-PS4

Spotted by a keen eyed Redditor in the latest EDGE magazine, Media Molecule has said: “Create mode will be fully compatible with VR (not at launch, we’re told, but at some point in the future) and other people’s virtual-reality dreams will be playable.”

Dreams has garnered significant interest from players and media alike due to its beautiful visual style and the fact that players will be able to create and share their own ‘Dreams’. The studio, famous for the LittleBigPlanet franchise, has said the title will allow anyone to build their own interactive adventures and platformers, shoot ‘em ups, puzzlers and more. And if you happen to be creatively stuck there will also be a story mode with three ‘tales’ to play through.

While the story mode doesn’t seem to be VR compatible, the main creation mode is – whether the co-op multiplayer portion of the mode is VR compatible is unknown. As the quote states, VR won’t be available at launch, currently though Media Molecule hasn’t given a date for Dreams’ main launch anyway, just that it should be sometime in 2018.

Dreams-PS4

Compatible with both DualShock 4 controllers and PlayStation Move, players can create their own ‘Dream’ from scratch or modify and expand upon someone else’s using a set of custom and pre-built objects. They control an imp like character – much like a mouse cursor – which can then manipulate objects by grabbing and pulling them.

Having the VR aspect in place will make the whole creation side that much more immersive, giving PlayStation VR access to a videogame that won’t be out of place with the Google Tilt Brush and Oculus Quill’s of the VR world. As further details emerge about Dream’s and Media Molecule’s VR plans, VRFocus will let you know.

PSX 2017: Dreams Will Get Only Limited PSVR Support After Launch

PSX 2017: Dreams Will Get Only Limited PSVR Support After Launch

Dreams is the next user-generated content obsession from the creators of the runaway-success franchise LittleBigPlanet. And although Dreams wasn’t playable at PSX this weekend in Anaheim, CA, select members of the press were invited to see a private, behind-closed-doors hands-off demonstration of the game.

During this demonstration members of the development team showed us everything from the game’s Media Molecule-crafted campaign and how levels can be remixed and customized, all the way down to what it looks like to build games from scratch — including the creation and editing of audio files within Dreams itself. Naturally, I also got the chance to ask about PSVR support.

“That’s like a Day 2 feature, not Day 1,” said one of the developers. “It won’t be in at launch.”

They weren’t willing to give an exact timeframe, but simply said that many aspects of the game are being built with VR in mind ev enif it won’t be there initially. They need a bit more time to polish and make sure it runs smoothly.

We already had a feeling that VR wasn’t going to make it for launch, even though it’s been mentioned in the past, but what we found out next caught us a bit by surprise.

As it turns out, once Dreams does get its PSVR support, that will not come in the form of the entire game. Instead, only “certain segments” of the game will be “remixed and re-imagined” for VR support. According to the developer that answered the question, this is to ensure that it’s “not a shitty VR experience” when it comes out.

We’ll have to wait and see what the VR support really looks like in the end. Whether or not we’ll be able to play games that people make in VR, sculpt objects and design levels in VR, or do something else entirely remains to be seen. You’ll have to wait until later this week for our full preview of what we saw from Dreams, but suffice it to say that we don’t think fans of content creation apps will be disappointed.

Dreams from Media Molecule will release in 2018. The forthcoming PSVR support is not dated.
