Rebellion Unveil Abstract VR Adventure Arca’s Path, Due for Release This Year

UK-based indie developer and publisher Rebellion (Battlezone) has announced the first virtual reality (VR) title from fellow British studio Dream Reality Interactive, Arca’s Path, which is due for release later this year.

Dream Reality Interactive has described Arca’s Path as an ‘abstract yet enchanting adventure’, with the experience all about guiding a girl through a labyrinth of dangers in a bid to return home and to reality. The title is set to include an ‘intuitive play style’ that doesn’t require a controller, so by the sounds of it movement will be gaze based.

While Rebellion is well known in the VR industry for its 80’s reboot of tank combat title Battlezone, Dream Reality Interactive has only released one other title since its formation in 2017, an ARKit videogame called OrbuHowever, the team is made up of videogame veterans, founded by former Sony London Studio head, Dave Ranyard, they created PlayStation VR Worlds,  and the critically acclaimed AR interactive book series Wonderbook. The dev team also includes Albert Bentall (who worked on London Heist) and Anna Hollinrake (BAFTA breakthrough artist 2017).

Arca’s Path will be coming to PlayStation VR, Steam VR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go and Gear VR later this year, with its first public debut happening at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 next month. The studio is staying quiet about further gameplay details for now, although there definitely looks like there’s going to be plenty of running, jumping and platform footwork involved if the first teaser trailer below is anything to go by. The video also helps to showcase some of the sprawling level designs players will have to navigate, all without the aid of a controller.

With such a prestigious team working on this multiplatform titles Arca’s Path is gearing up to be one of the more interesting and unique offerings set to attend E3 2018. Of course, VRFocus will be at the event to bring you all the latest news and hands-on coverage.

ARKit Game Orbu Marks Dream Reality Interactive’s Debut

Dream Reality Interactive has today launched its debut augmented reality (AR) videogame, Orbu. Developed using ARKit, Orbu is available now for iPhone and iPad, downloadable via Apple’s App Store.

Orbu screenshot

With a unique art style inspired by Zen gardens, Orbu is an AR videogame based upon slingshot mechanics. Players transform their real-world surroundings as they attempt to guide their Orbu creatures – Tanuki (raccoon dog), Noko (turtle) and Konkon (fox) – through a series of obstacle courses, leading them to their spiritual homes. Moving around the play areas – indoors or outdoors – players must find butterflies, feed fish and can unveil new secrets as they progress.

“Working with ARKit has enabled us to open doors to new dimensions,” states Albert Bentall, Creative Director of Orbu. “It’s like watching a magician do a trick for the first time but instead of pulling rabbits out of hats we make fish jump out of the floor.”

Fronted by David Ranyard, formerly of Sony London Studio – the team responsible for the popular PlayStation VR Worlds – Dream Reality Interactive announced its launch in early 2017. Following a few months of silence it was revealed that the studio had raised finance from a number of high-profile investors, including Phil Harrison, the co-founder of PlayStation and President of Sony Worldwide Studios.

Ranyard, CEO of Dream Reality Interactive, said “Augmented Reality has enormous potential to offer new experiences for players, especially on mobile. We wanted to make a game where people could step out of their busy lives and relax in beautiful Zen gardens. Guiding the Orbu creatures through obstacle courses is a fun distraction from modern life.”

Orbu screenshot

Orbu is the studio’s first AR title, however Dream Reality Interactive was also involved in the development of Hold the World, a Factory 42 production for Sky featuring Sir David Attenborough as a VR hologram.

Available to download now, Orbu is compatible with iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus, 7 and 7 Plus, 6s and 6s Plus, SE; iPad (2017, 9.7) and iPad Pro (12.9 and 10.5), priced at $2.99 USD, £2.99 GBP and €3.49 EUR. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on Orbu and future AR/VR releases from Dream Reality Interactive.

PlayStation Co-Founder: ‘Sony’s blazing a trail in VR’

It was announced earlier this week that Phil Harrison, co-founder of the PlayStation brand, had invested in UK-based Dream Reality Interactive. Following this revelation, Harrison has offered some interesting sentiments concerning the virtual reality (VR) industry as it stands, and what he sees as essential for the future.

Phil Harrison

In a lengthy interview with Eurogamer, Harrison stated: “Sony’s blazing a trail in VR.

“I don’t believe that any of the devices that are on the market today are going to be the winners 10 years from now,” he added. “Meaning, I don’t think any of the devices we see today are going to have the legs to last a 10-year generation.”

Expanding on this opinion – one which is generally considered the most likely outcome by the early adopter VR hivemind – Harrison suggests that commentary offered by his peers may have some truth to it.

“All of the devices need to go through a massive change… and Phil Spencer is right when he says, ‘When you’ve got loads of wires sticking out of your head, it’s not going to be a mass market adoption.’

“There will be a core audience who continues to be “blown away” by VR as it is, but for it really to take hold, the hardware needs improving.”

‘What improvements?’ you may well ask. Harrison, again, appears to agree with the general consensus of those who have been involved with VR since the debut of the first Oculus Rift development kit. Compute performance, weight and ergonomics; nothing that wouldn’t be expected. However, Harrison also believes there’s a limit to public adoption regardless of if/when these problems are solved.

“It’s likely – and this is unproven, nobody knows for sure – there will be a mass-market reluctance to wear a completely immersive device,” he said. “Some people just won’t like the idea of blocking out the outside world, whereas I believe more of the world is going to be interested in a mixed reality: an augmented reality where you can still see, you can still hear – you can still interact with real people but it’s augmented with additional data. That is the end goal.”

HoloLens

Of course, Harrison is speaking of technology that already exists. Microsoft’s HoloLens provides this experience, but isn’t yet consumer ready. When questioned on this, Harrison told Eurogamer:

“They have made some strong moves in creating an ecosystem for VR through the Windows platform, and there will be hardware providers in Windows’ ecosystem who bring VR headsets to the market.

“But the bet seems to be around Hololens for now, and that’s a pretty impressive piece of technology. The price point means they are positioning it as an enterprise solution today, but over time you could imagine that becoming cheaper, smaller and more mass market.”

PlayStation Co-Founder Phil Harrison Invests in VR Startup Dream Reality Interactive

Earlier this year VRFocus reported on former head of Sony London Studio, Dave Ranyard, revealing his brand new company Dream Reality Interactive (dRi) which would focus on virtual reality (VR) development. Today, the studio has announced the first round of investment with two big investors getting involved, creative company Mother and Phil Harrison, the co-founder of PlayStation and President of Sony Worldwide Studios.

Few details about the funding round have been revealed but the inclusion of Harrison is surely a major boon for Ranyard and Dream Reality Interactive.

Ranyard said in a statement: “We are really excited by the space where AR, VR and AI meet and can see amazing opportunities for new levels of immersion and human interaction. Having backing from two successful and insightful investors enables us to accelerate our ambitions and is a huge validation of the talented team we have put together.”

Dave Ranyard

While Harrison commented: “I invested in dRi because the team is fantastic and the AR/VR sector is one of the most exciting frontiers in technology today.”

The studio has kept fairly quiet so far on all the IP’s it might be working on, only recently announcing ‘Hold the World’ a Factory 42 production for Sky, featuring Sir David Attenborough as a VR hologram.

Mother is an independent creative company formed twenty years ago, involved in advertising, experiential, digital, design, and product development, having worked with brands such as Diageo, Stella Artois, IKEA, Unilever and MoneySupermarket.

Michael Wall Global CEO of Mother added: “The team that Dave has assembled at dRi represent a brilliant and fundamental part of the future shape of marketing – with the skills to harness emerging technologies and supercharge the potential of brand storytelling. Our recent experience with Stella has only reinforced our view of the importance it will present in the future.”

Whatever Dream Reality Interactive is working must have turned a few heads, so as further details emerge, keep reading VRFocus.

Sony London Studio Head Forms New VR Studio ‘Dream Reality Interactive’

Dave Ranyard, who headed up Sony’s London Studio throughout PlayStation VR’s development, has announced the formation of a new VR-focused game Dream Reality Interactive.

Dave Ranyard was arguably the public face of Sony’s Morpheus (aka PlayStation VR) project in the early days of its public life, after its unveiling at 2014’s Game Developer Conference. Ranyard headed up Sony’s London Studio and were tasked with exploring the possibilities and pitfalls of VR gaming and just what would become the world’s first console VR platform.

Ranyard led the team responsible for the PSVR launch title VR Worlds, a collection of experiences which represented the most successful of their years of experimentation. The compilation included such varied offerings as London Heist,

However, not long after the PlayStation VR’s launch in October of last year, Sony announced it was making some structural changes to its London Studios which meant job losses. Now, perhaps as a result of those changes, the head of Sony London is stepping down from his post and is setting up a new development house, Dream Reality Interactive, focused on virtual reality gaming.

Ranyard said of the move “With the availability of a range of VR headsets the question is no longer IF virtual reality will be successful, it is WHEN and most importantly, HOW? None of us really knows the answer but after a fantastic 17 years at Sony, now feels like the right time to explore the possibilities. Going independent allows me to work across all platforms and that’s very liberating.”

And Ranyard won’t be the only Sony London alum. at the studio, as some of his former teammates are joining him. Richard Bates, Artemis Tsouflidou, Albert Bentall and John Foster, who were all “integral to the development of ‘VR Worlds’ for Sony’s PSVR headset” are joining Ranyard at Dream Reality Interactive. The new studio is already is already “working on several projects and prototypes, creating its own IP in addition to developing titles in partnership with other IP owners, across a variety of VR headsets.”

It’s difficult to estimate Sony London Studio’s impact on VR gaming’s landscape. The team were one of the earliest to begin defining the do’s and don’ts of VR as a gaming platform and as such those joining Ranyard on his new venture may arguably have some of the most experienced VR developers in the business. We’re therefore very much looking forward to seeing what Dream Reality Interactive have to offer in the future.

London Heist Devs Form New VR Studio Dream Reality Interactive

Dave Ranyard, the former head of Sony London Studio, has announced the formation of a brand new studio focused on virtual reality (VR) development called Dream Reality Interactive.

Ranyard hasn’t formed Dream Reality on his own, as he’s joined by former Sony London teammates Richard Bates, Artemis Tsouflidou, Albert Bentall and John Foster, who were all part of PlayStation VR Worlds development for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) PlayStation VR headset.

Dave Ranyard_CEO, Dream Reality Int

Dream Reality Interactive has so far stated its currently working on several projects and prototypes, building its own IP in addition to developing titles in partnership with other IP owners, across a variety of VR headsets.

“With the availability of a range of VR headsets the question is no longer IF virtual reality will be successful, it is WHEN and most importantly, HOW? None of us really knows the answer but after a fantastic 17 years at Sony, now feels like the right time to explore the possibilities. Going independent allows me to work across all platforms and that’s very liberating,” said Ranyard.

Back in September 2016 SIE announced there would be some major redundancies at London Studio as the developer had recently wrapped up development of PlayStation VR Worlds a few weeks before.
