Onward Gets Custom Maps, Revamped AI, And Free Play Weekend

The newest update to military sim VR shooter Onward brings the game up to version 1.7 (still in Early Access) to add custom map support, revamped A.I., and a slew of other updates amidst a 50% discount and concurrent free-play weekend on Steam.

Downpour Interactive announced the update yesterday on Steam and Reddit. Custom map support is a big deal because it’s the biggest bottleneck of new content for shooters like this and was, until now, the main feature that Pavlov (Onward’s main, direct competitor) had that Onward was missing. There is also a Google Doc full of detailed custom content guidelines to follow.

Watch The Onward Update 1.7 Trailer:

Notably, Downpour Interactive even have custom map support on the Oculus Home version of the game, not just Steam. On Reddit the Downpour Interactive Community Manager explained, “This was the hardest part! Since we can’t use Steam workshop, we had to implement a different kind of workshop that would work for both Oculus Home and Steam users. To access the workshop and download user made maps, simply navigate to the workshop tab in the ingame menu. there you can download maps and rate them!”

Perhaps this means custom map support and crossplay is possible on the forthcoming Oculus Quest version too. The developers have even crafted their own custom maps and released key community maps that were created before the update went life that are already available as examples.

The other big piece of this new update is the revamped A.I. which is long overdue. When you play solo or in co-op you can face off against enemies on selected maps, but previously they were quite basic and predictable. This update aims to change that.

Now, enemies have different classes, operate in squads, and are no longer on set patrol paths with the same spawn points. According to the update, “AI will move to cover to react to players, initiate an attack, or to protect themselves from grenades. Rifle squads will patrol between choke points and intersections. Snipers will move to overwatch positions and take cover to wait for players. Assault, CQB, and Light squads will hunt players down.”

Additionally, A.I. sight is now “based on how much of the player can be seen” as well as how far away and how loud they’re being. They can also now use any weapon or attachment that players can.

The full list of updates has tons more included making this one of the biggest and most-exciting updates yet to the over-three year old military sim VR shooter.

Onward’s v1.5 Update Adds new Map, Game Mode and More

One of the more popular online military-style first-person shooters for virtual reality (VR) headsets, Onward received a new update today, adding a snow covered map, more game modes and new weapons as well as the usual bug improvements.

Onward

Due to the amount of snowfall North America and a lot of Europe seems to be receiving, the new map Snowpeak seems fairly apt. The map is set in the Russian mountains, inside a long-forgotten military base.

As for game modes, the main new one is Uplink Assault. Featuring 5v5 gameplay on large maps, the mode has the core features of Onward’s flagship gamemode, just with respawns. If you play on the Marsoc team then you have 20 shared respawn tickets. You win by getting to the Uplink, inputting the code, and defending the Uplink while the code is sent. If you’re playing as the Volk then you have infinite respawns. The Volk win by making Marsoc run out of tickets, or successfully defending the Uplink for the entire round.

Downpour Interactive will now be alternating social game modes every two weeks. These modes were first introduced at Halloween with the latest being Gun Game. It is a ten-player free for all with respawns. All you have to do is climb the ladder of guns to get a kill with each of them to win.

And when it comes to new kit, players now have access to the single-shot RPG (available to Volk Specialist), the M203 grenade launcher attachment which has frag and smoke grenade ammo options (available to Marsoc Specialist on the Mk18), plus the hand smoke grenades now have white, red, and green colour options.

The update also includes:

  • Fresh new hand models.
  • Use controller buttons and capacitive touch to move fingers to make gestures (network synced across all players).
  • Unique animations for every gun trigger, barrel, and foregrip.
  • Hand grabbing objects now smoothly lerps instead of snapping to the object.

Onward supports both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Currently, via Steam, you can download the videogame for free for the next two days. Or there’s the weekend deal which has knocked 40 percent of the price, dropping it from £18.99 GBP down to £11.39. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Onward Update 1.4 Adds Spec Ops Halloween Mode And Pistol Attachments

Onward Update 1.4 Adds Spec Ops Halloween Mode And Pistol Attachments

Onward’s 1.4 Update today brings with it a lot of improvements and new additions. Chief among them is a brand new game mode called Spec Ops, which works a lot like typical “Infection” modes from other shooters. In the mode, a Marsoc soldier armed with only a knife gets increased speed, visibility, and some utility items to try and take out the Volk team. It’s hunter versus hunted.

You can see a teaser of the mode, which has some heavy Halloween-style undertones, right here:

Also included in the 1.4 Update are molotovs and C4 for the Volk specialist class, pistol attachments like suppressors and red dots, a revamped Subway map, some new gun models, better UI, and more. Onward will also be free on Oculus Home this weekend from today until October 29th so you can try it out at no charge to see if you like it.

Onward is widely considered to be one of the (if not the absolute) best VR shooters on the market and it was first created by a single indie developer. You can read more about its origin story here. We’re still waiting to hear about what’s next from developer Downpour Interactive.

Since then the game has gone on to include co-op modes, tons of maps and guns, and so much more to establish itself as the premiere VR military simulation shooter. Check out our field guide for detailed advice on getting started with the game.

Let us know what you think of the update down in the comments below!

Onward Adds a Spooky Twist to its Free Weekend

Military first-person shooter (FPS) Onward has become quite the popular Early Access title since it launch in 2016 on Steam then 2017 for Oculus Store. The videogame was part of the recent VR League: Season 2 alongside Downpour Interactive’s fairly regular free weekends for players to demo the experience. This upcoming weekend is no different, apart from the fact that it’s Halloween next week so the studio has something creepy in store.

Onward

Onward’s free weekend begins tomorrow, Friday 26th October, 6pm BST and runs through until Monday 29th, 5am GMT on Oculus Store. The team has released a very brief trailer for the Halloween event, showcasing a dust bowl of a town where visibility is highly reduced.

Teasing a bit more info one of the development team took to Reddit to confirm that the new spooky gamemode would be complimented with new gear. No specifics were mentioned but it could see attachments for sidearms being employed.

If you’ve yet to try Onward then this weekend is the perfect time to try. Featuring 5v5 online battles where players have one life, no heads-up display, and no crosshairs, Onward also includes solo/co-op modes against AI opponents. To add to the realism Onward features dynamic time of day, weather effects, and multiple environments and scenarios to play through, as well as an artificial locomotion system to make the hectic gameplay as comfortable as possible.

Onward has over thirty different weapons to choose from, with a number of mods available in the game’s lobby, including red dot sights, flashlights, 12x scopes, and more to add a tactical advantage to each combat scenario. This will obviously be increased with the Halloween update.

Downpour Interactive has yet to confirm when Onward will be fully released. When it does VRFocus will let you know.

Onward Livestream: Lock And Load For VR Military Sim FPS Action

Onward Livestream: Lock And Load For VR Military Sim FPS Action

Almost two years ago Onward hit Steam and set the VR world on fire. Dante Buckley, a then-one-man-development studio that taught himself everything he knows after dropping out of college, has successfully built a team and company around his breakout success. In its wake, Onward has spawned other VR shooters like Pavlov and Stand Out, as well as showed the industry that the majority of VR gamers can handle smooth locomotion just fine.

Onward is a hardcore military simulation VR FPS that doesn’t hold back any punches. This weekend it’s free on Steam for anyone to download and play, so we figured this was a great chance to dive into the game. We haven’t played in months so we’re very rusty and there’s a lot of new stuff we haven’t seen yet. Wish us luck! If you decide to play as well, make sure and read our Field Guide of tips.

We’ll be livestreaming Onward on PC today using an Oculus Rift with Touch starting very soon as of the time this is being published (which means we’ll start at approximately 2:30PM PT) and aim to last for about an hour or so. We’ll be livestreaming directly to the UploadVR Facebook page. You can see the full stream embedded right here down below once it’s up:

You can see our archived streams all in this one handy Livestream playlist over on the official UploadVR YouTube channel (which you should totally subscribe to by the way).

Mil-Sim VR Shooter ‘Onward’ to Host Free Access Period on Steam This Weekend

Onward, the multiplayer VR shooter in Early Access, is hosting another free access weekend, this time on Steam for owners of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

The popular mil-sim tactical shooter has hosted several free weekends since its Early Access release in 2016—and another fresh one is ready to be locked and loaded, starting July 19th at 10AM PST (local time here) until the 22nd at 1PM PST (local time here).

The game is primarily focused on online multiplayer, and includes 5v5 team deathmatch, objective-based gamemodes, solo/co-op vs AI, 30 different realistic weapons, and a host of artificial locomotion options including hand-relative locomotion, snap-turn, and of course room-scale locomotion. Check it out on Steam here.

Remember: there aren’t any HUDs or projected cross-hairs, so your shooting ability (and ability to communicate) will greatly influence your chances of nabbing that all-important victory.

The free weekend will only be available through Steam, a Downpour Interactive spokesperson announced via Reddit. For Rift users, SteamVR won’t actually be required since the game supports the Oculus SDK natively. Simply allow ‘unknown sources’ through the Oculus PC app, and boot the game directly from Steam.

To allow content from unknown sources:

  • Open the Oculus app on your PC.
  • Select Settings in the left menu.
  • Select the General tab.
  • Next to Unknown Sources, click to allow content from unknown sources.

BBC World Cup VR App Downloaded Over 325K Times

BBC VR World Cup 2018

Getting to the topic of the FIFA World Cup 2018 right away, it has been revealed that the BBC World Cup VR app has been downloaded over 325,000 times. The app allows views to enjoy a wide range of content from the event in immersive VR and put themselves closer to the sport then ever before. The number of downloads, though tiny in comparison to non-VR viewing of the World Cup is still an impressive number on its own. It shows that there is a growing audience for the media even if there is still a long way to go.

All of the 33 World Cup games from the BBC, including the final, are to be available via the BBC Sport VR 2018 FIFA World Cup app. According to the figures, as reported by Broadcast, non-VR viewings of the World Cup have passed more than 40 million live and on-demand request for the BBC’s coverage across BBC Sport and BBC iPlayer.

It will be interesting to see if the number of downloads for the VR app continue to grow as the World Cup continues or if we have already hit the peak. VRFocus will be sure to let you know should the BBC reveal more data.

Onward Invitational Matches Available To Watch

As VR videogames continue to become more common in the eSport’s scene the VR League and ESL have been putting select titles into the limelight. Test Your Penalty Shoot-Out Skills In New VR Experience

The Straits Times

Finally this week, another piece of World Cup goodness. If you have been thinking you could do a better job then some of the players when it comes to penalty kicks there is now a VR experience that will let you prove it. The Straits Times has created a lightweight VR penalty shoot-out challenge for fans of the World Cup and lets them pick from the 32 countries taking part and try to lead them to victory.

Needing to score the as many kicks as possible, players will start from the bottom and work their way up through the rounds until they are in the finals. As you progress so to do the other teams, with a performance comparison available at the end of the experience to see how they fared. The experience is designed for mobile devices but can also be enjoyed on a computer using a mouse. You can try it for yourself here.

That is all for This Week In VR Sport. For more on immersive sport news keep reading VRFocus and remember to check back next week for another This Week In VR Sport.

Multiplayer FPS Onward Is Free To Play This Weekend

Developer Downpour Interactive released their virtual reality (VR) tactical military shooter back in late 2017 and have now revealed that Onward is available to play for free this weekend on the Oculus Store. This means that anyone who was wondering what it is like to be immersed within a modern set military title can do so, completely for free.

Focusing on five-versus-five battles in a modern setting, players will find themselves needing to make every step and action count. With only one life and next to information being displays on screen, this is the closest to real-life warfare as you can get. Working together with friends or computer controlled team members, players will need to complete objective-based game-modes and use tactics, communication and coordination along with weapon skills to come out as the victor.

Back in May of this year, the team at Downpour Interactive released a new update which brought will it a number of big improvements and features to the title. This included updates to the shadows and lighting effects across all of the titles maps, improvements to the inventory system to allow for better navigation. Items were also made ambidextrous, along with being made to be shared between players as well as dropped.

A number of new weapons came in the update as well which give players more options in how they want to approach a fight. Night vision and IR lights were also added to the title along with night-time maps to the title as well. The update also brought with it the implementation of the EasyAntiCheat (EAC) system to help deal with any potential cheaters that might be causing trouble within the title.

The free weekend of Onward is available now on the Oculus Store, and is running until 8am (BST) on Monday, 18th June. Players who want to keep going after this time can do so by picking up the title at discounted price of £10.99 (GBP) down from £18.99 as part of the free weekend.

VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest from Downpour Interactive in the future so make sure to stay tuned for more.
