‘Doom VFR’ Devs Detail Gameplay, Setting, and Locomotion in New Video

In 2016, Bethesda announced it was working on a Doom VR project, and earlier this year at E3 the company revealed it as Doom VFR. Due to launch in Q4 2017, a Q&A video with the game’s developers shines more light on the kind of gameplay and world that players can expect.

One important thing to note (if you didn’t catch it by now) is that Doom VFR is not a VR adaptation of the franchise’s latest title, Doom (2016). The game is a new Doom experience built from the ground up for VR. In fact, you’ll play a new protagonist—or perhaps a series of them, as your digital consciousness gets transferred between different computer systems and cybernetic entities, the developers reveal.

The video also offers more detail on locomotion, which the devs say is based on teleportation and dashing, ensuring that Doom VFR maintains Doom’s signature breakneck locomotion pace.

Doom VFR is due to launch in Q4 2017 on PSVR and HTC Vive for $30. No Rift support has been announced yet, but the company claims they “plan on supporting as many platforms as we can.”

DOOM VFR Developer id Software Share Developer Experience with VR

Bethesda’s press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2017 played host to a bunch of new virtual reality (VR) titles from the publisher. VRFocus hashad a chance to get hands-on with the trinity of Fallout 4 VR for HTC Vive, PlayStation VR’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, and one we’re very excited for, DOOM VFR.

DOOM VFR is a brand new game from Bethesda – not merely a VR adaptation of their hit shooter. Developed internally at id Software, DOOM VFR will see the player transferred to a robot body and spraying bullets into demons in order to bring a UAC Martian facility under control.

Now, id Software’s Robert Duffy and Game Director Marty Stratton share some of their thoughts and experiences with DOOM VFR.

On the challenge of developing DOOM VFR for virtual reality, Duffy, id Software CTO, says; “Developing a DOOM game specifically for virtual reality has provided an exciting opportunity to not only surround players with the world of DOOM like never before, but also let them experience and explore the UAC and Hell in new ways, playing as new characters with totally unique tools and abilities.”

Stratton chimes in, stressing that having a satisfying DOOM experience in VR was a priority; “Since the hallmark of any DOOM game is combat, we’ve made it our top priority to ensure moving, shooting and killing demons with overwhelming force in virtual reality is as brutal and rewarding as it is in the DOOM experience that fans have been enjoying for the past year.”

As mentioned VRFocus has played DOOM VFR, and we can’t praise the VR transformation enough, saying; “Essentially a sequel to 2016’s DOOM reboot, DOOM VFR is just as gloriously bloodthirsty as its predecessor. A huge variety of guns, enemies, locations, exploration and everything that made DOOM one of the best videogames of last year is present and correct in DOOM VFR. But how does such fast and aggressive gameplay work in VR? Well, brilliantly. Yes, even the strafing.”

DOOM VFR will launch in 2017 on PlayStation VR and HTC Vive. If we have any more demon-shredding related news we’ll be sure to let you know on VRFocus.com.

‘Doom VFR’ Pre-order Available for $30, a Separate “standalone VR game” from ‘Doom’

Doom VFR, the VR-compatible game following Id Software’s recent Doom (2016), is now available for pre-order for $29.99 on PSVR and HTC Vive, a far cry from the non-VR game’s original launch price of $59.99 just last year. You might be wondering why.

While the non-VR Doom has since gone down in price (now $29.99), it comes to us from the same parent studio, Bethesda, that just priced the upcoming Fallout 4 VR at a full price tag of $59.99. Bethesda confidently writes this in the first line of the Fallout 4 VR description:

“Fallout 4 […] finally comes in its entirety to VR. Fallout 4 VR includes the complete core game with all-new combat, crafting, and building systems fully reimagined for virtual reality. The freedom of exploring the wasteland comes alive like never before.”

Unlike Fallout 4 VR, what we’ve read in the product descriptions across the various digital marketplaces about Doom VFR’s doesn’t make it clear whether the VR game is going to be the full base game or another entirely separate experience all together. Only in a recent blog post does Bethesda call Doom VFR a “standalone VR game.”

Doom VFR Product Description

  • Experience DOOM combat and its iconic weapons and demons from an entirely new perspective
  • Physically interact with the DOOM universe as you seamlessly traverse across the UAC facility and Hell using tele-portation and jet-strafe movement
  • Explore all-new UAC Martian research facility areas and discover the unique abilities of a cybernetic UAC security operative
  • Set shortly after the demonic invasion on the UAC’s Martian research facility, you are the last known human survivor – until your death. Under a top-secret UAC operational contingency protocol, your consciousness is transferred to an artificial brain matrix. Your designated purpose: restore operational stability and use any means necessary to stop the on-slaught of demons.

Id Software CTO Robert Duffy says its “a DOOM game specifically for virtual reality [which] has provided an exciting opportunity to not only surround players with the world of DOOM like never before, but also let them experience and explore the UAC and Hell in new ways, playing as new characters with totally unique tools and abilities.”

The game is currently available for pre-order now through the PlayStation Store, Steam and Amazon. Published release dates appear to be placeholders, as Bethesda’s only mentioned a Q4 2017 launch window.

We’re currently reporting from E3 in Los Angeles, so check back for more news surrounding new VR games and experiences.

Checkout the First Trailer for DOOM VFR

Well Bethesda hasn’t disappointed virtual reality (VR) fans with its pre-Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2017 press conference with the official unveiling of DOOM VFR and Fallout 4 VR both coming to the HTC Vive head-mounted display later this year. If you missed the livestream, VRFocus has the DOOM VFR trailer below so you can see what its all about.

Featuring the same hardcore first-person shooter (FPS) gameplay that the traditional videogame is known for, DOOM VFR has everything fans would expect from a VR version, with big guns, horrific enemies straight from hell and more besides. The title also uses teleportation to quickly move about levels.

DOOM VFR will launch later this year for HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, although no actual date has yet been confirmed.

‘Doom VFR’ Coming to PSVR and HTC Vive, Here’s the Reveal Trailer

What was an earlier version of Doom for VR announced last year has evolved into a full title from Id Software, now titled Doom VRF. The game will be released for PlayStation VR and the HTC Vive.

On stage during Bethesda’s E3 2017 press conference the company revealed a more developed version of their in-development VR version of Doom. Now titled Doom VFR (an acronym which we can only guess involves a certain F word), the game looks a lot more mature than when we tried it at E3 last year.

A reveal trailer (heading this article) gives a glimpse of the game in action, showing teleporting locomotion, but also quite a bit of flying through the air and dashing.

The formalization of the title suggests the game is nearing release, and Bethesda says we’ll see it launch at some point in 2017. The game is now confirmed as launching on both PSVR and HTC Vive.

It’s Time to Enter Hell as DOOM VFR is Officially Unveiled

During E3 2016 Bethesda made a couple of surprise virtual reality (VR) announcements during its pre-show press conference. One was Fallout 4 VRthe massively popular, post-apocalyptic role-playing game (RPG), and DOOM VFRthe iconic first-person shooter (FPS). The latter appeared on the show floor merely as a tech demo, with around five to ten minutes of gameplay in a couple of different areas. Now it seems Bethesda has taken that initial idea one step further, fleshing out a fully fledged VR experience for fans.

The tech demo took elements from the most recent DOOM videogame and brought them into VR with some areas working better than others. In today’s announcement, Bethesda’s Pete Hines, Global Vice President of PR and Marketing, has started the show by confirming the title will come out this year for HTC Vive.

DOOM VR hasn’t been the only bit of VR news from the studio. The press conference has seen the official confirmation that Fallout 4 VR is on its way. As previously mentioned, this has also been in the works since last year and was far more guaranteed to be released as a proper experience.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of E3 2017, reporting back with the latest VR news from the LA-based event.

Watch Bethesda’s E3 Livestream Here @9PM PST, Expecting ‘Fallout 4’ VR and ‘Doom VR’

E3 is here, and Bethesda, the makers of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, may be announcing updates to their first ever public VR offerings at tonight’s E3 keynote. Watch the livestream right here.

Since VR versions of both Fallout 4 (2015) and Doom (2016) were revealed at last year’s E3, we haven’t seen or heard much about specifics surrounding the ‘Bethesda VR’ initiatives. Bethesda has however said that Fallout 4 VR for the HTC Vive will be the entire game and not just a demo or vertical slice, and put the speculative release date “within 12 months” from last year’s E3. That mean’s this month, folks.

No such info was given for Doom VR, although the developers have been collaborating to make the games possible in VR.

I had my hands on both Fallout 4 and Doom VR adaptations at last year’s E3, and while a little rough around the edges at the time (Doom was little more than a tech demo with no actual gameplay), the ability to see the familiar worlds in VR seemed to breathe life into the games not only by making a Wasteland Raider or a Cacodemon that much more intimidating, but by showing you the true scale of the worlds set before you.

The livestream starts at 9PM PST (click here for local time). What do you think Bethesda will show at this year’s E3? Comment below!
