Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire Is An Upcoming VR Tower Defense Game

Tower defense and strategy games are genres that are slowly becoming more and more prevalent in the VR world.

In the early days, many VR developers focused on FPS and puzzle games, but now we’re seeing more and more strategy games emerging as time goes on. Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire is one of those games — it’s an upcoming PC VR tower defense game that sees you play as a magical spirit defending a castle from oncoming attacks.

Developed by Dark Catt Studios, the game is a first-person tower defense title where you’ll play as the spirit Djinni working alongside Thaco, the bumbling wizard from the trailer embedded above. In a classic tower defense manner, you’ll be playing to defend Thaco’s castle from attacks sent by the villainous King Crambone.

However, being a magical spirit, you won’t just be working with traditional tower defense structures to protect the castle — you’ll also be able to use spells to bolster your defenses too. The gameplay is a gesture-based experience that “steers away from the standard shooters and sword games that are prevalent in VR today.”

There are multiple levels and extra modes to unlock, totaling at around 30+ hours of content according to Dark Catt. The studio mentions support for HTC Vive (original, Pro and Cosmos) and Oculus Rift headsets, with availability for other headsets coming “at a later date.” These other headsets are likely the Valve Index and Windows MR headsets, which are already listed on the game’s Steam page, but here’s to hoping we see a release on PSVR and Oculus Quest in the future as well.

Djinni & Thaco is coming in Q2 of this year — so sometime in the next two months. It is available to wishlist on Steam and Viveport now.

Tower Defence Title Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire Coming to PC VR in Q2 2020

Djinni & Thaco

After appearing on VRFocus’ roundup of virtual reality (VR) videogames arriving this week, Dark Catt Studios Interactive’s tower defence title Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire has now been given a new release window of Q2 2020.

Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire

Summoned by a powerful wizard called Thaco, players take on the role of a Djinni who must protect the wizard’s tower from an onslaught by King Crambone’s armies. Magic is the main weapon of choice here, with Djinni able to conjure a selection of spells including powerful lightning storms from the sky or plumes of fire from their hands. As this is a tower defence title players will, of course, be able to summon additional towers to their aid.

Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire features a gesture-based control system to help immerse players in the gameplay as well experimenting with the latest cinematic techniques including incorporating Virtual Reality Volumetric Video into their cutscenes for maximum visual effect.

“There are so many shooters, especially zombie shooters, out there in VR; we wanted to go back to the core of gaming and make some characters you love to love, and love to hate. We hope everyone will love this VR tower defence adventure,” said John Robb, Dark Catt Studios CEO in a statement.

To ensure players have plenty to keep them busy, all the levels have their own unique paths and challenges plus there are several modes to unlock. Dark Catt Studios Interactive states that all the content in Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire should give players 30+ hours of gameplay.

The videogame also has a special guest cameo by film industry veteran Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Entertainment Inc., the man behind The Toxic Avenger as well as starring in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and many, many more.

Dark Catt Studios Interactive will be releasing a demo via Steam for Djinni & Thaco: Trial By Spire this month supporting HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro, HTC Vive Cosmos, Oculus Rift/Rift S and Valve Index.
