Experience David Attenborough’s The Green Planet as a 5G AR App

David Attenborough

David Attenborough’s next project The Green Planet, focuses on flora and fauna from across the world and thanks to a new collaborative effort will be turned into an augmented reality (AR) experience.

The Green Planet AR

Led by immersive content studio Factory 42, BBC Studios, mobile network EE, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Talesmith and Dimension Studios have announced The Green Planet 5G AR Consortium to create the AR experience and promote 5G technology.

Awarded £2.2 million GBP as part of the 5G Create competition, the consortium’s AR app will allow you to explore this fascinating subject from the perspective of plants. You’ll be able to use an AR-capable device to nurture rare and exotic plants, observing their behaviour whilst encountering the various animals that live among them.

“The importance of protecting the planet has never been greater and the opportunity to use emerging technologies to engage audiences of all ages in environmental issues in new ways is hugely exciting,” said John Cassy, Founder and CEO, Factory 42 said. “We’re delighted to have pulled together a unique consortium of world-leading organisations and look forward to showing how 5G networks will enhance our everyday lives and our understanding of the world around us.”

Green Planet - EE 5G

“5G Create is about exploring new and inventive ways we can use 5G to give British industries a competitive advantage. This cutting-edge app, fronted by broadcasting legend Sir David Attenborough, is set to be an inspiring example of how new technology can reconnect us with the natural world whilst demonstrating the power of 5G to a huge new audience,” said Matt Warman, Minister for Digital Infrastructure.

As the project is all about showcasing the power of 5G the interactive experience will be available “in a number of set locations” around the UK notes Factory 42. How many and where have yet to be finalised. The Green Planet AR will be released in 2022, plenty of time to get a compatible 5G device.

ABE Begins Return in Two Terrifying Micro-Films

ABE - 2020 image2

Last year during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Dimension (formerly Hammerhead) teased the first details of killer robot ABE’s return, not just in virtual reality (VR) but across location-based entertainment (LBE) and film. It’s now released two micro-films which begin to further dig into the story of ABE.

ABE - 2020 image1

As you’d expect from a horror franchise these shorts aren’t some playful animation, they’re extremely dark concepts with one taking place on a subway train and the other set in a laundrette. Episode One ‘The B Train’ is the classic lone traveller being stalked by the killer, moving ever closer as the lights flicker. Episode Two ‘Acid Wash’ is from the viewpoint of a cat who wanders into the laundrette’s basement chasing a moth. Spoiler, the kitty is fine.

These two are just the first in a 10-episode series Dimension has planned for ABE, still directed by Rob McLellan who created the original live-action short film in 2013. The rest will be released over the coming year, teasing more of ABE’s story through the eyes of the robot and his victims as the studio gear’s up to expand this horror universe.

This will come in three parts, a continuation of the short film, another videogame which will be VR compatible and the LBE experience. While little has been revealed content-wise so far, the LBE title will be a multiplayer escape room.

ABE E3 2019

It was in 2016 that McLellan and Dimension released ABE VR, a short cinematic experience where at points you become the victim. ABE is a misguided robot seeking the unconditional love of humans in all the wrong places, namely by trying to ‘fix’ them by cutting them up. Needless to say, this never works, leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake.

While ABE VR wasn’t interactive the new projects are expected to add gameplay elements, in a similar fashion to other titles like Vader Immortal or Agence. As more of the micro-films are released, VRFocus will let you know.

New HoloLens 2 App Helps UK Doctors Train To Identify COVID-19

A new HoloLens 2 application uses volumetric capture of a COVID-19 patient to help UK doctors and nurses safely identify symptoms.

HoloPatient: COVID-19 is a free extension of GIGXR’s HoloPatient platform, produced in partnership with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and the new Resilient XR consortium. The app presents users with a ‘standardized patient’ showing COVID-19 symptoms. The patient was captured using Dimension’s London-based Mixed Reality Capture studio, with features a rig with over 100 cameras that record humans ten stitch their actions back together as a 3D asset. The company says it shot the footage under safe conditions.

“Shoots are looking a little different at Dimension today, in the name of the health and safety of both the crew and the general public,” said Adam Smith, Head of Production at Dimension. “In line with advice from the APA and the Government, protocols include adherence to the 2m social distancing rule, strict use of PPE and regular temperature checks by a medic on set. To limit the number of people present, we have remote directing capabilities, streaming a live feed of the action from a wide selection of camera viewpoints. It’s not traditional but it’s efficient and hasn’t impacted quality in our experience.”

The app, meanwhile, takes users through four stages of COVID-19 illness, providing a safe means for doctors and nurses to recognize symptoms seen in a typical case.

Resilient is a group consisting of UK-based immersive technology companies such as Dimension, tech hub Digital Catapult and VISR VR. Also included are developer agencies like Fracture Reality and Make Real. It’s also supported by the University of Leeds’ Centre for Immersive Technologies and University College London. Along with this HoloLens app, the group has also been using volumetric capture to deliver online training videos in which viewers can zoom in and inspect processes in greater detail.

Abe VR, Siren Developer Hammerhead Moves Under Dimension Branding

Hammerhead, the UK-based VR developer working on original projects such as Abe VR and promotional experiences like last year’s Britannia VR app, is today merging with the Dimension brand.

Dimension is the name given to the London-based volumetric capture studio that opened a few years ago. The site is operated by Hammerhead, which has often used the technology in its own projects and those for clients. Volumetric capture, in this case, is a process of recording a human performance using a 360-degree rig lined with cameras. After capture, each camera stitches its recording into a 3D model of the performance that can be used as an asset in VR, AR or traditional experiences.

You can see the tech at use in Hammerhead’s own Britannia and Virtual Viking VR apps. In fact, it was the end-to-end solution of Dimension capture and Hammerhead development that spurred the move to bring the latter under the former’s branding. You can see some of its past work in the video below.

“Our studios have always collaborated on productions and have a great shared culture but are increasingly being engaged end-to-end on immersive and location-based entertainment productions as one team,” explained Simon Windsor, Co-Founder and Joint Managing Director of Dimension, in a prepared statement.” In recognition of this and our exciting roadmap for the next generation of volumetric and XR content, we’ve decided the time is right to focus everything under Dimension. Future products and productions launched will be Dimension.”

The company confirmed to UploadVR that there have been no job losses in the transition. Ongoing projects have not been canceled, either.

We’re looking forward to seeing more from Dimension soon, then. We’re still excited to see what becomes of Abe, which we debuted at our E3 VR Showcase last year.

Developer Behind ABE & Syren Hammerhead and Volumetric Studio Dimension to Merge Under one Brand

Hammerhead VR, the British studio which has released consumer content such as ABE and Syren as well as commissioned experiences like Virtual Viking – The Ambush is going to merge with its sister company, volumetric studio Dimension under one brand.

The move will place both companies under the Dimension brand from now on, whilst continuing the work they’re known for. Hammerhead was founded in 2014 as an immersive content studio, producing a variety of experiences as the industry grew. Then in 2017 Hammerhead created Dimension in partnership with Digital Catapult and Microsoft as a state-of-the-art volumetric capture and digital humans studio.

Currently comprised of four studios, including two mobile film stages operating internationally, at its London, UK base Dimension has a 106 camera stage which has been used for Hammerhead’s VR work as well as productions including Madonna’s hologram performance at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.

“Our studios have always collaborated on productions and have a great shared culture but are increasingly being engaged end-to-end on immersive and location-based entertainment productions as one team. In recognition of this and our exciting roadmap for the next generation of volumetric and XR content, we’ve decided the time is right to focus everything under Dimension,” explained Simon Windsor, Co-Founder and Joint Managing Director of Dimension in a statement. “Future products and productions launched will be Dimension.”

ABE E3 2019Jeremy Silver, CEO, Digital Catapult adds: “Three years ago, as part of our ongoing strategy to help boost the UK’s immersive content creation sector, Digital Catapult launched Dimension with Hammerhead VR as the first commercial volumetric capture studio in Europe, collaborating closely with Microsoft’s mixed reality studio. Today, combining real-time immersive production capabilities and volumetric performance capture operations under the single banner of Dimension signals the maturing of this sector. We continue to be excited by how this story is developing and how immersive mixed reality technologies are paving the way for future formats and experiences as well as extending what is possible in current mass-market film and tv formats, delivering increased flexibility, time savings and increases in quality.”

One of Hammerhead’s most well renown VR experiences was horror short ABE way back in 2016. Last year the company confirmed work had begun on expanding the ABE universe into three parts, a videogame, a film short and a location-based entertainment (LBE) experience. The studio has confirmed that these are scheduled to be released later in 2020. For further updates from Dimension, keep reading VRFocus.

Britannia VR: Out of Your Mind Takes You Inside Sky Atlantic’s Anarchic Drama

Outside of virtual reality (VR), horror experiences like Syren and ABEBritish developer Hammerhead VR does a lot of work in the commercial sector alongside sister company Dimension. Examples of this include Virtual Viking – The Ambush for The Viking Planet Centre Oslo. The most recent was for a collaboration with Sky VR to create an immersive experience based on Sky Atlantic’s 2nd series of Britannia.

Britannia VR: Out of Your Mind

Using the same detailed volumetric capture technology seen in the Viking experience, Britannia VR: Out of Your Mind takes fans of the show inside this anarchic drama. To get a realistic look Dimension using photogrammetry to capture actors MacKenzie Crook, Liana Cornell, Ben Bailey Smith and Steve Pemberton, as well as the props and set.

Britannia VR: Out of Your Mind is an interactive experience where you’ll need to make decisions to see different parts of the story. You can choose to be immersed in a world of Druid magic and mysticism or enter an intoxicating world of Roman imperialism by drinking wine from a Roman goblet or inhaling the magic smoke from a Druid bowl.

“We are delighted to bring the world of Britannia to life through this truly immersive interactive VR experience. By blending cinematic and game production techniques, we are able to truly showcase the epic scale and ambition of Britannia,” said Neil Graham Executive Producer for Sky VR and Sky Cinema in a statement. “Working together with Vertigo and Hammerhead we are extremely proud of what we’ve been able to create together.”

Britannia VR screenshot 1

“Britannia VR continues our work creating highly realistic and emotive immersive experiences – bringing fans into the world of Britannia to interact and experience the drama and magic as though there themselves. Sky’s pioneering approach to new volumetric production techniques helps connect fans with the characters and their stories in powerful new ways and we’re thrilled with our latest collaboration,” adds Simon Windsor, Joint Managing Director, Hammerhead & Dimension.

Britannia VR: Out of Your Mind is available to download now for free via Steam, supporting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Valve Index headsets. An Oculus Store version will be launching soon. For further updates from Hammerhead VR, keep reading VRFocus.
