Interview: Automotive Specialist Zerolight on Finessing Software Through Eye Tracking

With its headquarters in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, Zerolight is at the forefront of immersive visualisation techniques for the automotive industry, regularly showcasing its virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) developments. Earlier this month Develop:Brighton took place and VRFocus caught up with the Zerolight team to find out what was new.

HTC Vive Pro Eye - heatmap

One of the core aspects of Zerolight’s VR solution is to provide car manufacturers with an immersive system for customers to buy their products. This is a VR experience where they can finetune features of a car purchase, such as interior trim or various alloy designs. With this in mind, Zerolight continually looks to optimise the software via the use of eye-tracking and heatmaps.

Using a headset like the HTC Vive Eye, Zerolight can monitor where a customer is looking, what draws their attention and how long they may look at specific areas. This information can then be tailored for different manufacturers, allowing them to add in more key options in the places that matter, offering a greater variety of paint colours for example. At the same time streamlining the experience so that customers don’t feel like they’re getting bogged down with endless options that they don’t want or need.

VRFocus saw this in action at an HTC Vive event in May, demoing a BWM showpiece that’s been a staple experience for a couple of years. Zerolight aims to ensure a highly immersive experience, so you start by standing next to the car to alter the outside design then step into the car and sit down in a racing-style seat – it wouldn’t work as well in an office chair – for that added sense of presence.

HTC Vive Pro Eye

VRFocus had a chat with Alvaro Barua, a software developer at Zerolight discuss the current trend towards mobile-based headset such as Oculus Quest, as well as its continued efforts improving its VR solution with eye-tracking.

Develop Brighton 2018 Header

The 2,369 attendees at Develop: Brighton were able to hear from over 120 speakers across 107 sessions and eight tracks, which equated to more sessions than had ever been at a single Develop: Brighton event, which was possible due to an extended three-day format.

A new track introduced at Develop: Brighton for 2018 was Develop: Research, which aimed to highlighted the value of University research and development to the videogame industry and also featured a series of sessions on areas such as diversity in the videogame industry, the importance of mental health, dealing with social media and making videogames accessible.

In addition, 32 exhibitors were present at the Develop: Brighton Expo, including companies such as Hanger 13, Jagex, King, Bossa Studios, Epic Games, Sumo Digital and PlayStation.

“I’d like to thank all our speakers, sponsors, exhibitors and attendees for making this year’s Develop:Brighton such a success,” commented Andy Lane, managing director of Tandem Events. “For 2018, we strived to create a conference and expo that was more diverse, had more content and explored more of the topics that are at the forefront of games development. We are pleased with positive comments we’ve received this year, and for 2019 we’ll continue to push forward and create a conference that brings the game development community together.”

Develop: Brighton will be returning to the Hilton Brighton Metropole from 9th-11th July, 2019. The calls for speakers will open in January 2019. Further news on Develop: Brighton, keep checking back with VRFocus.

Michael Hampden: We’ll See New VR Killer Apps Emerge

The lead game designer for the studio behind Blood & Truth, Sony London, has been speaking at the Develop: Brighton conference. Michael Hampden addressed attendees on the topic of virtual reality (VR) and what the next few years will bring.

During a talk for the first day of the conference, Hampden said that he expected the future to be bright for VR, with new genres of games emerging from VR, and new development tools being created.

As reported by MCV UK, Hampden said he expected VR to birth entirely new types of videogame, stating: “In the next five years, I think we’ll see some VR killer apps emerge and we’re going to have established a design language. I think we’re going to see some growth in mobile VR as well and medical applications. And one new genre of game will be born, one that will only be possible in VR.”

Looking further ahead, Hampden said he expected that accessories that provided more realism, such as haptic feedback, would make an impact on the VR space: “I think one of the missing key for everyone is haptic feedback. It should makes a giant leap forward and will be a game changer. Feeling an object, the texture, will change the game, it will make things much more immersive and it will allow new genres of VR games to emerge.”

The rise of location-based VR centres was something Hampden also pinpointed as an ongoing trend: “We’ve seen developers switching from doing room scale environment to do location-based experiences. These are things like the Star Wars Secrets of the Empire and stuff like that and it’s pretty interesting to see the ability that this technology brings to users. You can have the ground shaking as the user is walking through the space or you can have wind or temperature changes. These are very powerful and profound experiences that people love and are willing to spend money for, to try something like that. We have a limited number of these experiences out there so far but I think this trend is here to stay and we’ll see more and more location based VR coming in the future.”

Another talk with links to VR and immersive technology will be given by Alex Leff, Professor of Cignotive Neurology, who will be speaking about the benefits of therapy apps for patients with acquired brain injuries.
