Darts VR Fires on to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift

Game developers The Awesome Game Studio are better known for their large out-of-home virtual reality (VR) experiences such as Hub Zero in Dubai, than for modest VR videogames, but the company has today announced the launch of a VR sports game Darts VR for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Using stylised and colourful environments that more resemble a trendy nightclub than the sort of surrounding stereotypically associated with Darts, Darts VR offers a simple, physics-based darts experience that is aimed at letting everyone have a good time playing a darts match, whether they are experiences darts players or not.

The title is aimed at party play. Players can compete for a high score, or two players can go head-to-head using the traditional ‘501 rules’ or players can aim to get the most points in limited-round games. Players can play solo to practice their skills, then head into the Grand Arena and hear the cheers of onlookers as they face the giant colourful dart board. Darts are thrown using simple gesture controls using the motion controllers, making gameplay fairly intuitive.

Local Multiplayer is handled using a ‘pass-and-play’ system where each player takes their turn and hands the controllers and headset over to the next player. The developers have not confirmed if they are planning to add network multiplayer.

Darts VR is now available on Viveport and the Oculus Store priced at $9.99 (USD). Oculus Rift users will need the Touch controllers in order to play. A Steam VR version is also in development.
