Fantasy Adventure Sequel Witching Tower: Heroes Magically Appears in Two Weeks

Witching Tower: Heroes

Daily Magic Productions’ original Witching Tower VR offered a well-balanced magical adventure when it arrived a couple of years ago for PC VR headsets, even seeing a port to PlayStation VR in 2019. Now the studio has announced a sequel, Witching Tower: Heroes, expanding upon the fantasy universe with a far more action-oriented edition.

Witching Tower: Heroes

While the first title had you exploring a tower to find and defeat the evil queen at the centre, in Witching Tower: Heroes you play a fearless hero sent to a war-torn kingdom to deal with all sorts of undead creatures which have been let loose from the Dark Tower.

Initially single-player to begin with, you’ll be able to choose from four weapon styles, a melee sword combination, a magical bow for ranged attacks, a drill to shred enemies and a staff of Fire and Light to cleanse the battlefield. Daily Magic Productions will be mixing up the gameplay with various missions such as protecting or destroying certain objectives.

As it’ll be an early access release the team notes: “The game is stable and fully playable from start to finish. The game has 3 maps, each with unique gameplay. Players have access to 4 weapon types which are very different from each other. The game is beginner-friendly even to people unfamiliar with VR and has plenty of customization options, allowing players to tweak the controls to their liking.”

Witching Tower: Heroes

But it does sound like Witching Tower: Heroes will be most suited to multiplayer gameplay, which will be added in due course: “PvP and 4 player co-op are in the pipeline and will be released in the nearest future. Other than that, we will add more content to the game: weapons, abilities, maps, etc. Another feature in the works is RPG elements and unlockable special abilities that bring more depth to the combat,” Daily Magic Productions adds.

There won’t be long to wait either as a launch date is scheduled for 29th April 2020, supporting Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. For further updates on Witching Tower: Heroeskeep reading VRFocus.

Gothic VR Adventure Witching Tower Hits PSVR Next Week

Get ready to take up arms and slay some skeletons; Witching Tower hits PSVR next week.

Developer Daily Magic Productions just confirmed a September 17 release date for the game on Sony’s headset. This will be the full version of the game that originally launched on PC VR headsets in October 2018. No price for the game has been confirmed but it costs $19.99 on Steam so expect it to be around that region.

In Witching Tower you fend off hordes of dark fantasy monsters whilst also solving puzzles. Spells let you control enemies while archery gives you long-range combat options. You can see the PSVR launch trailer below.

We quite liked Witching Tower when it first released, awarding the game 7/10. “Witching Tower is an okay hack-and-slash bolted on top of a nicely spooky horror-themed adventure,” we wrote in our review. “It’s good for a solid, creepy weekend of puzzles, and is likely going to clean up at VRcades.”

Obviously it’s been a year since then, so hopefully some past updates improve the PSVR release. As for Daily Magic, we’ll be excited to see what’s next for the studio following this release. We don’t know if Witching Tower could come to Oculus Quest, for example, or if it might be working on a new game.

Witching Tower is just one of several PSVR game’s we’re looking forward to before 2019 comes to a close. Last week we rounded up 10 other titles we can’t wait to play, including Gorn, Espire 1 and more. It’s going to be a busy end to the year!

The Witching Tower VR Receives September Release Date for PlayStation VR

Having teased a month ago that The Witching Tower VR would be coming to PlayStation VR this Autumn, developer Daily Magic Productions has finally confirmed an exact launch date, which takes place next week.

The Witching Tower - Screenshot

Originally released for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive last year, The Witching Tower VR is a dungeon crawler of sorts, where players find themselves trapped at the top of a tower by the evil Queen of the Undead. She has brought sorrow and despair to the land and you just so happen to be the only one who can stop it, playing a girl called Anna who possesses magical abilities.

Once free from your cell, you have to descend through the tower destroying the Queen’s deadly monsters en route as well as plenty of puzzles. To face the deadly hordes you can choose between melee combat, carving them up with a few choice blows from your sword. Or, because you are heading down the tower equipping your bow and taking a few long shots helps to whittle them down. On the magic side, there are options to grab items at a distance or for seeing what can’t be seen normally – such as enemies or puzzle clues.

For the PC review VRFocus gave Witching Tower VR a reasonable three stars, saying: “While it doesn’t break new ground or offer anything too unique, the Witching Tower is still an enjoyable title for those who love this genre of videogame.”

The PlayStation VR version will be a straight port of the PC edition, featuring all the updates and improvements Daily Magic Productions has made over the past year. The Witching Tower VR is scheduled to launch on 17th September for PlayStation VR via PlayStation Store in most territories. VRFocus will continue its coverage of the latest PlayStation VR releases, updating you on all the launch dates.

Witching Tower VR Coming to PlayStation VR This Autumn

Back in March Daily Magic Productions announced that it was putting all its efforts into porting Witching Tower VR to PlayStation VR having released the last major PC update for the title. This week the studio has now confirmed Witching Tower VR will be arriving for the headset this Autumn.

The Witching Tower - Screenshot

That’s still quite vague as it is still summer, so that could be any time within the next three months but at least it narrows down the launch window. “PlayStation version of Witching Tower VR is in its final stages of development, and we are looking forward to showing it to the public,” notes Artem Severin Head of Marketing, Daily Magic Productions on PlayStation Blog.

As far a VRFocus can tell the PlayStation VR won’t differ from the PC VR version in terms of features or additional options. That final update released several months ago reworked the fighting system making enemies smarter, so they do defend themselves and counterattack, making them harder to kill. Locomotion was also improved so that players stopped getting stuck.

VRFocus gave Witching Tower VR a reasonable three stars for its review, saying: “While it doesn’t break new ground or offer anything too unique, the Witching Tower is still an enjoyable title for those who love this genre of videogame.”

The experience is a fantasy dungeon crawler which takes place in a shattered world, destroyed by a conflict known as the Undead War. Now controlled by the Queen of the Undead, the land can only be freed by Anna, the Queen’s prisoner in the top of her tower held captive because of her magical abilities.

Gameplay involves you working your way down the tower, learning about your powers as you go. Featuring both sword-based melee combat as well as a bow for some sniping capabilities, your magic powers can take control of undead warriors and pit them against your enemies, reveal invisible objects and grab and control objects from a distance.

When Daily Magic Productions announce a launch date VRFocus will let you know.

Magical Adventure Witching Tower VR is Coming to PlayStation VR

This week Daily Magic Productions has released its last major update to its fantasy adventure Witching Tower VR for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. While the PC VR version gets improved combat and locomotion, the developer has now confirmed work on the PlayStation VR version.

The Witching Tower - Screenshot

In actual fact, when the studio first announced Witching Tower VR in early 2018 it did mention plans for a PlayStation VR version, yet no further mention of it was made until this week. It seems that Daily Magic Productions has been solely concentrating on getting the PC version right and free of issues before focusing efforts on the console version.

But that is now taking place, with one of the team responding to a Steam user enquiring about there being no more updates:  “Today we released the latest update in Steam (In HTC and Oculus stores a bit later). Not that it is the last, but it’s not worth waiting for updates in the near future. We will be fix [sic] only critical bugs. Now we must fully concentrate on porting Witching Tower to PSVR. We plan to update the game after the release of the game on the PlayStation Store.”

So while there’s no date for the release of Witching Tower VR on PlayStation VR, when it comes to the PC version that’s your lot.

The Witching Tower - Screenshot

In this final update Daily Magic Productions has reworked the fighting system making enemies less easy to kill. They’re now smarter, able to defend themselves and counterattack for more dynamic battles. The locomotion has also been improved so that players can’t get stuck, there are now smooth turning settings and 3dRudder support.

VRFocus gave Witching Tower VR a reasonable three stars for its review, saying: “While it doesn’t break new ground or offer anything too unique, the Witching Tower is still an enjoyable title for those who love this genre of videogame.”

Currently, Witching Tower VR is on discount via Steam, reduced from £15.49 GBP down to £7.74, a saving of 50 percent. As further details regarding the PlayStation VR version are released, VRFocus will keep you updated.

Review: Witching Tower

With plenty of fantasy-based virtual reality (VR) adventures on offer, VR gamers are spoilt for choice. Titles such as The Mage’s Tale, The Unspoken, Left-hand Path, The Wizards and more all excel in providing deeply engrossing experiences for those who love to wield the arcane arts. The latest to enter this genre comes from Daily Magic Productions with a glossy, narrative-driven escapade called the Witching Tower, which offers plenty of sword combat with a light smattering of magical overtones.

The Witching Tower - Screenshot

Much like classic fairy tales and Disney stories, the Witching Tower features a narrative involving an evil Queen who controls the undead, and a young girl with magical powers that the Queen wants for her own nefarious ends. Finding yourself imprisoned at the top of a dark tower your quest is to work your way down through it heavily guarded hallways and make a break for freedom.

With role-playing game (RPG) style elements, the Witching Tower has been kept fairly bare bones in its character presentation. As is becoming commonplace with VR titles there’s no HUD to speak of cluttering your vision, helping keep a truer sense of immersion throughout the experience. What you do have is a belt that contains all your necessary inventory items as you locate them.

From swords and bows to flaming torches they all snap reasonably well to your waist and will automatically return there if dropped on the floor. A wrist mount pouch offers further slots for more of the throwaway items like bombs or puzzle related objects. While the videogame can be played seated it’s not recommended if possible, as the belt sometimes twists meaning access to items like the sword or torch can be frustratingly difficult to grab, especially when caught off guard by an enemy.

Another aspect that can be somewhat twitchy is movement. For these style of VR adventure’s the best way to explore is via the smooth locomotion, rather than hopping about via teleportation. In the Witching Tower smooth locomotion works well enough but there are moments – walking through doorways, or up and down steps – where you seem to get caught on invisible objects, either slightly stuttering movement or stopping it completely. This is one of those rare moments where teleporting around just makes life that little bit easier.

This doesn’t even particularly hinder those moments in combat where it’s normally easier to step backwards or strafe. Most of the enemies can be dispatched with a few blows of the sword – which can also be used for blocking – or when you have a height advantage just use the bow to whittle down their numbers. That being said, the bow isn’t as nice to use as the ones found in Apex Construct or In Death, its mechanics just don’t feel as taught or accurate.

As for the magic side of the Witching Tower, this generally comes down to two options. A lasso for grabbing distant objects and a special ghostly vision to help see enemies and puzzle clues. As mentioned there is combat involved but most of the time you’ll be solving puzzles to continue the story. They tend not to be overly convoluted, with the difficulty set well enough that most players shouldn’t get stuck for any length of time.

One aspect Daily Magic Productions has done a commendable job with is the visuals. Even on the lower settings the Witching Tower is richly detailed and atmospheric, with some beautiful stained glass windows and dark foreboding dungeons.

All in all the Witching Tower is a reasonably solid VR experience throughout. It’s not overly long but there are secrets to find for those completionists out there which help stretch the gameplay that bit further. While it doesn’t break new ground or offer anything too unique, the Witching Tower is still an enjoyable title for those who love this genre of videogame.

Sword & Sorcery VR Adventure ‘Witching Tower’ Gets October Launch Date, Trailer Here

Witching Tower, an upcoming action-adventure game that promises to be heavy on sword and sorcery, is headed to HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows VR headsets next month.

Created by Daily Magic Productions, a studio behind many puzzle, RPG and hidden object games for PC and mobile, Witching Tower is slated to land on Steam, the Oculus Store, and Viveport on October 4th, 2018.

The game is said to feature puzzle solving, bow shooting, sword melee combat, and grabbing and throwing objects. The variety of weapons also includes an enchanted lasso, magic vision, and the protagonist’s ability to control the undead.

If the early gameplay footage tells us anything, there’s sure to be some impressive gadgets and massive dungeons to explore as you battle against armor-clad skeletons.

Here’s Daily Magic’s store description of Witching Tower:

Six years ago, the Kingdom of Nemean fought a losing war against an invading empire. All seemed lost—and then a wave of sickness and undeath swept out from a tower at the heart of the Nemean capital. Skeleton soldiers fought the invaders back, but they didn’t stop there. Death and the undeath swept through the kingdom.

The pall of fear and pain that fell over the world only strengthened the undead and their creator, the Queen of the Witching Tower.

The player takes the role of Anna, a girl with a mysterious connection with the undead. For years, she’s been hunted by the Queen. Now Anna has been dragged in chains to the peak of the tower. With the help of some ghostly allies, she must break free, learn about her special connection to the undead, and face her nemesis, the Queen.

Witching Tower is also said to support PlayStation VR, although it’s unclear at this time when the PSVR version will launch.
