This Oculus Ready PC Costs $500 When Bundled with Rift

Looking to lower the barrier of entry for VR, CyberPower Inc., a custom PC manufacturer, recently announced a new VR-ready gaming system that could just convince you to take the plunge into virtual reality. Dubbed the ‘Gamer Ultra VR Desktop’, the custom PC was created in partnership with AMD and Oculus, and being bundled with the Oculus Rift for a total of $1,099.98 from Amazon (link available soon) and BestBuy’s online shop.

Subtracting the price of the Rift ($599), that makes CyberPower’s new VR-ready PC one of the most affordable options at $499.

CyberPower’s new system is certainly skating by on the bare minimum of what’s currently possible with its 4.2GHz AMD FX 4350 CPU and 4GB Radeon RX 470 graphics card, as even Oculus still recommends you have at least an NVIDIA GTX 1060/AMD Radeon RX 480 or greater for “the full Rift experience.” However, if you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to muck around with building your own PC and doesn’t have the scratch necessary for a future-proof beast of your dreams, the pre-built custom ‘Gamer Ultra VR Desktop’ could fit them bill if you’re currently looking for minimal upfront investment.

The lower price tag is primarily due to a new feature revealed by Oculus at Connect 3, the company’s annual dev conference, which Oculus says will not only help lower-end systems get into VR, but more importantly let them hit the 90 fps required for a smooth experience. Announced alongside the company’s new minimum spec, Oculus revealed Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW), a feature designed to make positional tracking feel smoother by fixing judder caused when you computer’s GPU can’t keep up. It does this by cutting the VR app’s framerate in half to 45 fps and blending in a synthetically generated frame to return it to 90, essentially giving lower-end GPUs a little more leeway when it comes to rendering scenes in VR.

Oculus maintains that the system offered in the bundle has been “extensively tested by both CyberPowerPC and Oculus to ensure that it is perfectly compatible with the Oculus Rift headset and is officially certified Oculus Ready.”

“Less than a year after launching the Oculus Ready program, we’re thrilled to see that the all-in price for jumping into the highest-quality VR experience continues to drop by hundreds of dollars,” said Nate Mitchell, head of Rift, Oculus. “Thanks to the efforts of hardware companies like CyberPowerPC and AMD, more people will have the opportunity to enjoy the amazing games and experiences coming to Rift this year.”

Oculus offers PC bundles from a variety of manufacturers through its Oculus Ready program including Alienware, Dell, Asus, Lenovo, Aorus, Falcon Northwest, and HP (coming soon).

CyberPowerPC, Oculus and AMD Deliver Rift Bundle with $499 VR-Ready Gaming PC

While companies are trying to advance virtual reality (VR) technology through improved audio or wireless connectivity, one of the biggest hurdles – entry cost – also needs to be tackled. This is being achieved in various ways, graphic card manufacturers like AMD and NVIDIA released products during 2016 that increased performance whilst dropping costs, and Oculus created Asynchronous Spacewarp to allow lower specced PC’s to run VR. This week Oculus, AMD and PC manufacturer Cyberpower have announced a new PC/Rift bundle that includes everything consumers need to get started, creating a VR Ready Gaming PC that retails for $499 USD.

The CyberPowerPC Gamer Ultra VR GUAVR3000B1 PC includes the quad-core AMD FX 4350 processor and the all-new AMD Radeon RX 470 graphics card, with 4GB of GDDR5 on board. It will also come with 8 GB of memory and a 1 TB hard drive. The PC can only be purchased with the Oculus Rift as an all-in-one bundle, so the actual price is $1,099.98 USD, dropping the cost by $150 from $1,249.98.

“This bundle will be the first complete AMD Oculus-ready gaming PC that provides the full experience of VR gaming at an affordable price,” said Eric Cheung, CEO of CyberPowerPC.

Amazon Offering $1000 Deal on Oculus Rift, VR-Ready PC, EVE: Valkyrie & $100 Oculus Store Credit

For those that have been eyeing up a new virtual reality (VR) headset current deals are offering some of the best prices yet. HTC Vive has its Black Friday deals, knocking $100 USD/£100 GBP off the head-mounted display (HMD) and the Vive Ready HP Computer Bundle. If you’re after the Oculus Rift on the other hand Amazon currently has a sub $1000 bundle with an additional bonus offer for a very limited time.

At the moment the online retailer is offering a CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A Gaming Desktop, which pack an Intel i5-6402P Quad Core 2.8GHz processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, and a AMD RX 480 4GB, along with the Oculus Rift for $999. On top of that customers will also get $100 of Oculus Store credit to fill their content libraries and a copy of CCP Games’ multiplayer shooter EVE: Valkyrie – one of the most expensive titles on the store – for free.

There is a catch of course, at time of writing the offer is only available for 11 more hours, so there’s no time to save up the cash. But if you’ve been holding off for a good deal this might be worth a look as the deal gives a combined saving of $300.

Got more money to spend, you might want to take a look at Oculus Touch, the motion controllers set to launch next month. These come in at $199.99, and also come supplied with free software including The Unspoken and VR Sports Challenge. But there will be other free titles available including Medium and Dead and Buried.

Buying the Touch and the bundle will set you back just under $1200, which is a little cheaper than rival HTC Vive and a compatible PC.

It seems as if both manufacturers are gearing up for some VR price wars this Christmas, and that can only be a good thing for growing the industry, attracting more people to VR which ever system they buy.
