Survios Bring VR Music Creation to the Electric Daisy Carnival

This year’s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), taking place in Las Vegas, 18th – 20th May 2018, will host a selection of virtual reality (VR) experiences, courtesy of Survious. The studio’s forthcoming Electronauts will be showcased at the event, with EDC attendees able to experience the VR title at the EDC VR installation in Carnival Square, starting at 8pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Centrally located within the EDC, EDC VR’s showcase of Electronauts, a surreal sonic experience, will feature several acts performing at the event, including 12th Planet, Yellow Claw and Bijou. Electronauts will allow attendees to remix, jam and perform at the Electronauts live stage.

According to Survios, 12th Planet’s song “Let Me Help You (ft. Taylr Renee)” ‘brings his signature sound to the track, enabling synth stabs, dynamic percussion and Taylr Renee’s vocals to be freely manipulated by the person behind the headset and Vive controllers’. Bijou’s bass heavy track “Gotta Shine (ft. Germ),” brings in Germ’s vocals and dictating builds, drops and breaks to mix and layer, while trap fans can delve into the Eastern hip-hop vibes of Krewella/Yellow Claw’s song “New World”.

Created by LA-based Survios, Electronauts is currently in development for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. No release date for Electronauts or Survios’ other forthcoming VR title, Creed: A Rise to Glory, have yet been announced. However, both are currently expected for release in 2018.

VRFocus recently went hands-on with Creed: A Rise to Glory, stating in a preview: “Creed: A Rise to Glory may not be promoted as one, but it certainly feels in part like a simulator, with stamina to deal with if players aren’t conservative with their punches. The core experience will centre on the career mode, getting Adonis Creed to the championship as well as playing Exhibition matches.”

Survios has previously found success in VR with Sprint Vector and Raw Data, both available now, as well as a technical demonstration fondly remembered by the earliest adopters in the modern VR community, Zombies on the Holodeck. Survios Want You To Be A Contender In Creed: Rise to Glory

The Rocky franchise has become something of a cultural touchstone, with nearly everyone being able to recognise the iconic training scenes from the first film. Developer Survios wants to take that recognition a step further, letting you step into the action and become part of the rise of Adonis Creed to boxing greatness.

VRFocus’ own Nina spoke to Survios Product Marketing Manager Vann Childs about Creed: Rise to Glory and how the title came about, and how the company has worked with film company MGM to create the experience.

MGM was one of the earliest investors in Survios, and is also the owner of the Rocky franchise intellectual property. The Survios team noted that virtual reality (VR) is ideally suited for the visceral environment of boxing, as the immediacy and immersion allows users to get much more involved in the events around them.

The development team did experience a few challenges along the way, such as devising a way to ensure that the player was in control of the avatar’s actions whilst still making the character of Adonis Creed seem suitably competent and capable.

The system that was devised is called the Phantom Melee system. This effectively involves two player avatars, a ‘phantom’ which remains 1-to-1 with the player’s movement, the second is Adonis Creed. The more closely the player matches with the movements of Adonis Creed, the better they will perform.

The main attraction for Creed: Rise to Glory is the campaign mode, which charts the progression of Adonis Creed as he attempts to fight his way up the ranks to become a boxing legend. Another mode available is Exhibition Mode, where players will be able to pick an arena and style in a more arcade-style casual experience.

Survios, the studio behind Raw Data (2017) and Sprint Vector (2018), debuted a new single player VR game this year on the GDC expo floor, an upcoming arcade boxing title that puts you in the shoes of Adonis Creed, son of Apollo Creed and protegé of Rocky Balboa.

It’s hard not to stop and gawk at people playing Creed: Rise to Glory in pair of actual boxing rings on the expo floor. While a small crowd of curious onlookers formed around the side-by-side rings, we got a chance to record a first look of the game in action.

The demo first puts you in the gym with a lifelike Sylvester Stallone where you train with heavy bags and punching dummies, each their own minigame. Later you’re tossed into the ring to experience the game’s unique desync mechanic which not only slows down your in-game boxing gloves as you lose stamina, but can knock you completely out of your body if you get staggered or even knocked out.

Survios hasn’t announced which platform the arcade boxer will hit when it arrives later this year, although we’ve seen it demoed both on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Preview: Creed: A Rise to Glory – A Champion in the Making

Survios doesn’t seem to be the sort of virtual reality (VR) developer that likes to relax or in fact create chill out experiences. After the success of Raw Data, an intense first-person shooter, the team went on to make competitive arm-swinging racer Sprint Vector. Continuing this heart pumping trend is movie tie-in Creed: A Rise to Glory which Survios publicly demoed for the first time during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2018 last week.

So this is a boxing experience, putting you directly in the shoes of a young Adonis Creed looking to emulate his father by becoming a boxing champion. And who is training you, well its none other than Rocky Balboa.

Survios made sure that demoing the videogame was a spectacle unto itself, putting GDC attendees inside an actual ring hooked up with an Oculus Rift and two front-facing Oculus Sensors. Before heading into the virtual ring for a proper fight some training was required first, heading to the gym to practice on some punch bags. This helped get a feel for each punches direction and speed, with green markers illuminating on the bag and combo combinations shown on a dummy. All fairly standard stuff but it helped as a warm up for the main event, although just like a normal bout it never fully prepares you for what’s instore.

Inside the ring it was time to face off against some big burly dude which Survios had tried to make look as intimidating as possible by adorning him with muscles galore. Unlike normal boxing which requires a mix of footwork and upper body discipline, Creed: A Rise to Glory is purely upper body. Dodging punches can be helped when feet aren’t completely planted to the floor, but holding both Oculus Touch controllers up to block was just as effective.

Delivering hooks, crosses, jabs and more were quick and relatively easy to land, although trying to land a combo then left the character open for retaliatory action. If this happened then one of two situations occurred. Early on in the fight Survios’ Phantom Melee Technology would kick in, requiring the player to mimic Adonis falling backwards by putting the controllers into a highlighted area. It’s an interesting idea that certainly makes you think about putting that guard up more often.

The other situation that can happen once the fight has progressed is getting knocked out. Other boxing videogames have gone for the manic button press to help with revival, but this is VR so thankfully Survios went for something different. Instead you’ll have an outer body experience, seeing the ring in the distance. It’s then a case of running back as quickly as possible – holding one of the buttons down and swinging your arms Sprint Vector style really fast – to awaken your unconscious body and continue the fight. It’s an approach that works well enough, offering a unique approach to getting knocked out.

Survios’s Next VR Title is ‘Creed: Rise to Glory’, a Boxing Game with Ambitious Mechanics

Hot on the tail of Survios’ latest release, Sprint Vector (2018), the studio today announced their next VR project, Creed: Rise to Glory, a VR boxing game being developed in partnership with MGM as a complement to the upcoming Creed II movie. While there’s a handful of VR boxing games already available, Survios is promising something called ‘Phantom Melee Technology’, which the company says will offer “an authentic immersive experience that truly makes you feel like a boxing world champion.”

Survios’ latest VR title, Sprint Vector hinges entirely around a unique and highly effective locomotion system that the company calls Fluid Locomotion. The system allows players to navigate immersively and comfortably in VR at high speeds, and it’s clear that Survios put a lot of time and effort into developing the system.

With Creed: Rise to Glory, due out later this year, the company is building the game upon a new set of VR mechanics which Survios calls Phantom Melee Technology. The system, the company says, will enable a more realistic and immersive feeling of boxing in virtual reality:

Creed: Rise to Glory advances virtual reality through Survios’ new Phantom Melee Technology, addressing the ongoing challenge of crafting impactful VR melee combat through a player-avatar disconnect. Phantom Melee Technology relies on a combination of Responsive Control—which triggers strategic desynchronization when the player is staggered or knocked out—and Virtual Stamina, which mimics the slowing effects of fatigue after the player delivers frantic punches or a flurry of blows, to produce authentic hit reactions. The result is a believably intense, wholly immersive boxing sensation.

Survios is working with MGM (Creed IP holder and investor in Survios) on the new title, and the pair plan to bring it to both VR arcades and home VR headsets, though specific platforms haven’t yet been announced. In the game, players can expect to put on the gloves of Adonis Creed, son of heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, and get some coaching from Rocky Balboa.

“In all the VR experiences we build, we aim to make our players feel empowered, and Creed: Rise to Glory accomplishes this in a very cinematic and active way,” says James Iliff, Survios’ chief creative officer. “We’re throwing players into iconic boxing arenas, trading blows with the top fighters from the franchise, all while experiencing the thrills and showtime dramatics of the ultimate Hollywood-style boxing exhibition. With our new Phantom Melee Technology, the game provides an authentic immersive experience that truly makes you feel like a boxing world champion.”

It certainly sounds interesting, and made all the more intriguing thanks to Survios’ strong track record; we’ll have a chance to find out soon how well it all comes together as the company plans to demo the new title at GDC 2018 in San Francisco next week.

Survios Enter the VR Movie Experience Business With Creed: Rise to Glory  

Los Angeles-based Survios has already cemented itself as a premier virtual reality (VR) developer thanks to videogames like Raw Data and Sprint Vector. It’s now heading into the far more dicey terrain of videogame movie tie-ins, announcing a new VR exclusive Creed: Rise to Glory.

After Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s (MGM’s) 2016 strategic investment in Survios, this is will be the companies first IP release, throwing players into a blockbuster boxing experience. They are Adonis Creed, fighting to establish a legacy in the shadow of they’re champion father. Players will be able to go toe-to-toe with the world’s top opponents in an intense boxing experience that lets them train, fight and (eventually) win like a Creed.

Using Survios’s proprietary Phantom Melee Technology, Creed: Rise to Glory aims to challenge both your mind and body as you endeavour to become champion. The system uses several mechanics which the studio calls Responsive Control and Virtual Stamina to make the melee combat feel truly immersive. This should make experiencing the ascent of Adonis Creed from scrappy underdog to prize fighter even more epic, and of course you’ll train with the legendary Rocky Balboa.

Explaining how the Phantom Melee Technology works, Survios explains that for: “Responsive Control: two avatars dynamically sync and desync through specific in-game triggers, such as knockouts and taking a flurry of blows. With each punch, your body and avatar separate, but you have the chance to get back in the game by aligning with the body’s fighting stance or racing back into your prone character.” As for Virtual Stamina, players: “Feel the slowing effects of overexertion and fatigue through strategic desynchronization triggered by frantic player movement and successive punches.”

CreedThere will be a variety of gameplay modes, with Adonis Creed’s Career Mode being the main spectacle or arcade-style matchups with a variety of opponents and locations in Exhibition Mode.

Sprint Vector developer Survios is trading the track for the ring for its next VR experience.

The studio today announced Creed: Rise to Glory in partnership with MGM Interactive. It’s a VR boxing experience that ties into the movie series starring Michael B. Jordan (and spinning off from the beloved Rocky franchise). You’ll play as Adonis Creed and begin training under none other than Rocky Balboa, battling your way through the ranks as you tour some of the world’s best-known rings.

Boxing in VR is nothing new, and games like Knockout League have already taken a very decent jab at it, but Survios is looking to improve the standards of VR melee combat with what it calls Phantom Melee Technology. This new system combines responsive control with a virtual stamina meter that will slowly fatigue the VR character, causing them to stagger, at which point you won’t have control over your punches.

It sounds like an intriguing system that wants to create an authentic boxing experience with realistic hit reactions. Survios will be showcasing the game at the 2018 Game Developers Conference next week, though there’s no word yet on when the game will release and what platforms it will debut on. That said, Creed II is due for release towards the end of the year, so we wouldn’t expect it to be too far off.
