Play Team Shooter ‘Contractors’ for Free This Weekend on Steam

Contractors (2018), the team-based competitive multiplayer shooter, is running a free weekend on Steam starting today.

Contractors will be free-to-play until Monday, July 20th. You can download it now on Steam, which supports your standard range of SteamVR-compatible headsets, including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index, and Windows VR headsets.

The free weekend ought to give you a good idea of how the game should play since servers will no doubt be bustling.

The current 50% off sale is also likely to attract more users in the short term as well, which brings the game to $10 from now until July 26th.

Developers Caveman Studio have also recently released support for mods, letting users play community-made maps, create custom loadouts, and serve up new and interesting game modes that should keep you coming back for more. There are a ton of mods out currently, including fan favorites from Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Splatoon, and more. Check them all out here.

Contractors is available on Steam, the Oculus Store for Rift, and in beta on SideQuest for Oculus Quest.

Modding Platform mod.io Expands Into VR Initially Supporting Two Games

Contractors

Modding can be a big part of videogame communities on PC, ranging from small stuff like new weapon skins to entire levels made over in a different theme. Titles like Half-Life: Alyx actively encourage it and now popular modding platform mod.io has officially announced its support for virtual reality (VR).

Swords of Gargantua

To begin with, mod.io will support two VR titles, Swords of Gargantua and Contractors. The former announced the rollout of mod support last week, giving both PC VR and Oculus Quest players the chance to customize various in-game parameters such as adjusting enemy, player and weapon stats as well as creating enemy waves. On mod.io there are currently 32 mods available for the sword fighting experience.

As for Contractors, a team-based military-style first-person shooter (FPS), modders are able to create new maps, guns and game modes, mixing them up to create unique combat scenarios. At the moment there are 24 mods for Contractors on mod.io.

“We’re excited that mods for VR games like Swords of Gargantua, Contractors VR as well as Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx (which uses Workshop) are gaining traction… Modding has always been a source of significant creativity, so it’s interesting to contemplate what innovation will come from this,” said Scott Reismanis CEO of mod.io in a statement.

Contractors

Hopefully, this will see not only more mods for those aforementioned titles but also adding further ones to the roster. Half-Life: Alyx is expected to dominate the scene now that Steam Workshop support has been added – there are already well over 300 mods for the videogame.

mod.io is cross-platform so it’ll support Steam, Oculus and Viveport titles, while for modders there are open source plugins for game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine.

As more developers add mod support to there projects, VRFocus will keep you updated.

VR FPS Game Contractors Goes 50% Off After Biggest Content Update Yet

As we reported recently, Contractors received its biggest content update yet, adding official mod support, new games modes and crossplay support, among other things. Now, to coincide with the update’s release, the game has gone on sale for 50% on Steam until June 8th.

The discount brings the game down from $19.99 to just $9.99 — quite the bargain, we think. Contractors is a team-based, competitive multiplayer VR first-person shooter. It sits among a few VR FPS games that dominate the genre, such as Onward and Pavlov. The best of the three is up for debate (and probably a fair amount of personal preference), but at the time of writing, Onward is and Pavlov are both priced at $24.99 on Steam. This makes the $9.99 copy of Contractors look quite alluring, as the cheapest of the three at the moment.

If you missed the details of the update, you can check out our article for details. However, here’s a quick summary:

  • Crossplay capability with the Oculus Quest version of the game, which is still in beta
  • The ability to jump
  • Three new weapons
  • Three new game modes (bomb defusal, death match and gun game FFA)
  • UI changes
  • Improved animations
  • A tutorial for new players

It’s a pretty comprehensive update for existing and new players alike. So if you haven’t jumped aboard the VR FPS train just yet, this Contractors sale might be enough to pull you in. The sale only appears to the PC VR version on Steam, as the Oculus Quest version is still in beta and currently available for free via sideloading. For more details on that, see yesterday’s post.

Contractors is available for $9.99 on Steam until June 8th.

Contractors Adds Mod Support, Beta Crossplay With Oculus Quest Version

Contractors, a VR first-person shooter available for PC VR and on Oculus Quest in beta, received an update that adds mod support and the ability to host matches that allow for crossplay between PC VR and Quest players.

The game is a team-based competitive multiplayer shooter that launched in early access on Steam for PC VR back in December 2019, but has since moved to a full release. This latest update, v0.62, adds official mod support, which allow players to play custom maps made by community modders. Custom maps were already available to download online before the update, but official support integrates the process into the game itself. Players can now seamlessly pick custom maps or loadouts from within VR and host their own lobbies to play that content with others.

However, that’s not all. Contractors has also added the ability to jump in this update, along with three new games modes — Bomb Defusal, Death Match and Gun Game FFA. There are also new weapons, improved animations, a tutorial for new players and changes to the UI. All-in-all, it’s a massive update.

Additionally, PC VR Contractors players can now host a ‘Crossplay Beta’ game, allowing them to play matches with Oculus Quest players. The Oculus Quest version of Contractors is still in beta and not officially available just yet. However, if you want to try it out, you can download the APK from the Contractors Discord server. For instructions on how to install the APK, check out our guide on sideloading.

Contractors is available for PC VR on Steam, and you can read the full Contractors patch notes here. If you’re getting started with the game, check out our beginner’s guide from last year.

Contractors VR: Beginner’s Guide To Playing The Fast-Paced VR FPS

Contractors VR: Beginner’s Guide To Playing The Fast-Paced VR FPS

Contractors VR, a fresh FPS that originally launched in early-access back in December, is quickly rising in popularity thanks to its superb graphical fidelity and fluid controls. If you’re sick of Onward and Pavlov, Contractors VR blends the two together into something that lets you enjoy the best of Onward’s tactical pliability and Pavlov’s snappy cadence in a cleaner, better curated package.

When you first start up Contractors, you might have a few questions about how it operates. That’s why I’ve picked out the best tips and tricks for brand new beginners to get a leg up in learning how to play.

Party Up

From the main menu, you can party with other players on your Steam friends list and matchmake together as a group. It beats the process that you’d normally go through in other VR FPS games to designate a server as a meetup point for you and your friends.

Play Around With The Customization System

Contractors divides its primary weapon categories between Assault Rifle, Carbine, SMG, Shotgun, and Sniper Rifle. You also get a slew of gadgets, melee weapons, and secondaries to choose from. Finally, you can switch between Light, Medium and Heavy armor which come with different loadout slots and benefits.

Note: Light armor lets you equip two primaries, while medium armor has the most gadget slots.

Use the Target Practice Courses in the Main Lobby

There are a series of training courses available to complete, which run you through each of the weapon types and score you based on performance. You can run through each of them as many times as you’d like, and it’s a great way to test out new weapons and loadouts. Outside of the training courses, you can also use the targets for practice with unlimited ammo and explore the warehouse as you please.

Don’t (Always) Leave Customization Points On The Table

If you have extra customization points after you’ve finished building your loadout, you might as well allocate them and experiment with the different outcomes. Fiddle with Contractors’ array of attachments, gadgets, and weapon types until you have 0 customization points left over in your loadout. You can create some truly interesting builds while doing so. It’s not always the best winning strategy, however, if you don’t use 100% of the gear that you put into your loadout. This is explained below.

Keep Track of Your Mobility and Armor Scores

Each item and armor type in Contractors VR carries a certain weight with it, decreasing mobility as you stack up your loadout. Pay attention to the Armor and Mobility bars on the bottom left section of the loadout menu as you choose your gear. Contrary to my previous tip, when you opt to leave customization points on the table, you take on less weight and maintain better mobility overall.

Grip Your Weapons From Multiple Points

If you’re using a rifle, you can choose whether to grip it from the magazine or from the forestock. Gripping from the magazine is better for from-the-hip shooting while gripping from the forestock offers pretty much what you’d expect in terms of balanced aiming and recoil control.

You Can Dual-Wield

Dual-wielding is a nice feature in VR FPS games because frankly, who doesn’t want to feel like a badass with two weapons? Unfortunately, while you can dual-wield, you really shouldn’t try to build your loadout for dual-wielding unless you go for high mobility. Dual uzis with light armor is a simple short-range loadout that you can use to overtake enemies in tight spaces.

You Can Reload Holstered & Off-Hand Weapons

Just slide your clip or magazine into the weapon while it’s holstered and it’ll fit snugly. This can be useful for reloading weapons while moving, or if you don’t want to stow your current weapon to switch to the unloaded one.

If you’re holding a gun in your off-hand, you can reload it. Ambidextrous reloading also works if you’re holding a gun by its forestock.

Physically Duck While Sprinting to Slide

The running slide is one of the cooler features of Contractors VR that we haven’t seen in other major multiplayer FPS titles. When sprinting, duck rapidly to initiate the slide. If you don’t duck fast enough, you will engage crouching mode instead of sliding. This is useful for quickly moving down slopes and into/out of cover.

Experiment With Firing Modes

Many of Contractors’ weapons come with two or three different firing modes. In order to get a good feel for a given weapon, try out each of its different firing modes. Semi-auto is always the most accurate while full-auto is always the best for close quarters combat.

Always Fortify the Control Point

The maps in Contractors are built to be wide open, with many different potential angles of attack in each heat zone where a control point might appear. The control points have big targets overhead in the form of HUD markers, and they’re completely fair game—even if you capture a point, you need to wait for it to transmit its valuable data contents.

Meanwhile, enemy players can hide in the shadows and get the jump on you if you don’t know where they’re coming from. Once you’ve captured a control point, you and your squadmates should always cover each and every entrance to the area surrounding it while it transmits data.

Turn off IK and Tactical Vest to Enhance Performance

Go into Settings -> Controls and switch “full-player body” to “hands only”. While in the settings menu, swing over to Presentation and turn off the visible tactical vest which can sometimes get in the way of your weapon and gear visibility. Turning both options off should make it easier for your system to render the game. This is especially handy if you use heavy armor which, when rendered, eats up a lot of visual space whenever you look down.

Run Over Data Orbs That Dead Players Drop

Both teammates and enemies will drop bright blue or orange orbs which contain useful data, the primary resource that both teams need to amass in order to win a Control match. Killing enemies and taking their data will not yield nearly as much data as capturing a control point, but it still contributes to your team’s score.

Figure Out Where the Ammo Caches Are

Each map has a handful of ammo caches where you can restock your munitions mid-round. These can be useful spots to consider when you’re deciding which lanes to tackle as you move towards the next control point.

Remember that other players drop their items when they die, so you don’t need to come back to an ammo cache if you run out of ammo. Grabbing your downed opponent’s gun and spare mags can save you an unnecessary trip away from the objective.

Contractors VR is in early-access release now on Steam. While it is still a new game with only a few maps to play so far, it is quite polished and a total blast to play. As a new player, hopefully these snappy tips give you insight that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

You can find Contractors VR on Steam for $19.99 and watch our archived livestream to see it in action.

Contractors Hands-On: Gunning Down Enemies In The Latest VR FPS

Contractors Hands-On: Gunning Down Enemies In The Latest VR FPS

There are lots of really, really good VR shooters on the market. From Onward, which offers extremely realistic simulation-style gameplay, to Pavlov, which is a bit of a Counter-Strike clone, and even War Dust, which delivers Battlefield-scale 64-player matches there is something for everybody — even fans of zero-gravity environments via Echo Combat. Now the latest offering to come out and find success is Contractors, from Caveman Studio, which offers something that’s sort of a middle-ground between Onward and Pavlov with a mixture of realistic gun mechanics and fast-paced gameplay.

Admittedly after spending a lot of time in Firewall Zero Hour on PSVR using the Aim controller lately, it took a bit of re-learning the PC VR ropes when I first jumped into Contractors on livestream. I’ve got a Pro Tube now, which should help, because trying to aim steadily with two disconnected VR controllers isn’t easy.

The first thing that really helps set Contractors apart is the polish. For a game that’s only been out in Early Access for less than a month it already rivals other VR shooters that have been on the market for literally years. Visually it looks excellent, especially inside the headset, with great production values like reflections and shadows and high-quality textures. Mechanically it feels good to manipulate guns and the variety of loadout options is really satisfying.

On a pure gameplay level it’s so much faster than the other well-known VR shooters out there. Not only can you enable always sprinting, but if you crouch in real life while sprinting your character will slide across the ground for some really stylish take downs. The sound design is lacking a bit in comparison to non-VR shooters like Battlefield and Insurgency, but on the VR front it doesn’t get a lot better in terms of presentation right now for a modern-style military VR FPS.

The last time I played there was only a single game mode that played out similar to a variation on the classic Control game type. On each of four maps a waypoint spawns that your team needs to hustle to and camp on while you claim it. Once claimed, you get points for your team. If another team takes you out and claims it instead, they get the points. The waypoint will shuffle between three or four different spots on the map and the first team to claim enough waypoints is the winner.

It’s a good game mode that keeps the flow of battle moving around the map rather than getting congested at just a single choke point as you see often in Team Deathmatch or static Control game modes. Since then they’ve also introduced a Team Deathmatch mode as well, which should be great for a shooter with this level of speed and intensity.

Other than that it’s all about the little details. Reloading feels really good and satisfying, aiming down sights and scopes is immersive, and there is a litany of options to adjust gameplay features and comfort in the settings. In terms of pound for pound value, Contractors is near the top of the pile right now.

Most matches are 5v5 affairs and games are always filling up at all hours which is a very good sign. You can play with just bots as well if you want to practice solo. Unfortunately there don’t seem to be any co-op game modes or single-player mission-type options. It’s all just variations of the same multiplayer modes, so maybe they can expand that in the future.
