Ex-Sony Dev Russell Harding Details Elements That are key to AR and VR Creation

Several videogame experts from Sony were present at Open City Documentary Festival this year in London, and were brought in to discuss how gaming knowledge on interactivity has become essential when creating stories for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) storytelling. VRFocus spoke to Russell Harding, the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Conspexit Games Studio about his past experiences in VR as well as AR and what he’s working on now.

Harding has worked at Sony for ten years and has been delving into AR and VR ever since EyeToy, EyePet, Wonderbook: Book of Spells as well as the videogames. Harding has essentially asked players to roleplay in his videogames to immerse them. He believes both AR and VR can be social depending on  how you approach the experience.

Conspexit is an application for the visually impaired but Harding is now implementing his knowledge of AR and VR into an AR app for the visually impaired using Conspexit. The mobile AR app will allow people to collect data in the real world and share it with the visually impaired.

To find out more about Harding and hear his tips for integrating interactivity or developing for both mediums, watch the video below.

Conspexit and Kuju Team To Create AR

Recently established London-based company Conspexit Games Studio has teamed up with Kujo to create a new augmented reality (AR) videogame aimed at social change.

So-founder Eirik Moseng has brought together a team consisting primarily of ex-PlayStation names such as Claire Boissiere and Russ Harding, who previously worked on projects such as PlayStation EyePet and PlayStation VR Worlds.

Kuju turned its attention to virtual reality (VR) and AR earlier this year, subsequently producing The Chainsmokers Paris VR, an exclusive for the PlayStation VR.

Though details of exactly what the forthcoming mobile AR title will entail are yet to be revealed, the teams at Kuju and Conspexit have promised immersion and artistry in a title that not only challenges the skill of players, but also offers opportunities to be involved in social change.

“This is an ambitiously creative project; realising our innovative vision will be no easy feat and we can’t think of anyone better than Kuju to work with on it,” said Russ Harding. “The studio’s track record speaks for itself and with their team working alongside ours we’re confident that our debut game will be a truly awe-inspiring, immersive AR experience.”

“After the success of The Chainsmokers and a long history with camera-based titles going back to Sony’s EyeToy, we’re excited to take on what will be our first modern AR project,” added Brynley Gibson, Head of Studios at Kuju. “The team at Conspexit are driven to push the boundaries of AR and I know that bringing their vision to life alongside them will be hugely rewarding.”

VRFocus will bring you further information on the Kujo and Conspexit project as it becomes available.
