Coatsink to Release New Content for A Night Sky

Back in April Coatsink Software released a relaxing virtual reality (VR) experience exclusive to Samsung Gear VR called A Night Sky. Today the studio has announced the first content update for the videogame coming later this month.

Due to arrive on 30th June, the additional content will include new performances and interactions with existing creatures, with an owl, a dragon and a kaleidoscope of butterflies set to feature. The update will be priced at £0.79 GBP, $0.99 GBP and €0.99 EUR.

Designed to appeal to all ages with its quirky art style and easy pick-up-and-play mechanics, A Night Sky uses simple point and touch controls allowing the player to connect star constellations into patterns. As these shapes are connected and formed the virtual world comes alive with strange and wonderful animals, with them flying, running, and bounding around.

In addition to this first update release, Coatsink has revealed that new content packs will now be released monthly expanding the gameplay options in A Night Sky over the coming months.

A Night Sky is the latest VR release from the studio most well known for its puzzle series Esper and Esper 2. Costsink has one other announced title in the works for Samsung Gear VR in the form Augmented Empire. There’s no release date yet for the title but you can read VRFocuspreview to see what it’s all about.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of A Night Sky, reporting back with any further updates.

A VR Diorama With A Story To Tell: Coatsink Software Discuss Augmented Empire

Many, including ourselves at VRFocus, have compared Coatsink Software’s (Esper, Esper 2) upcoming title Augmented Empire with the likes of Firaxis Games’ X-Com series. Being a top-down, turn-based strategy game set in a futuristic world. But whilst the residents of Augmented Empire‘s island of New Savannah have their problems they aren’t dealing with a takeover by mind-controlling alien Elders. They’re instead dealing with issues more ingrained in a society split by a rigid class system.

VRFocus video correspondent Nina Salomons sat down with Coatsink Software’s Chief Operating Officer Eddie Beardsmore who explains just what the ‘story-driven tactical RPG’ entails and how the diorama-like system works.

If you’d like to learn more about Augmented Empire you can read our preview here.

Nina will be back throughout the week on VRFocus, continuing tomorrow with her weekly review and, of course, VRTV on Thursday. Make sure you tune in for both and also be sure to follow VRFocus on YouTube for regular VR video content.

Coatsink Confirm New Title A Night Sky Exclusive to Gear VR

British virtual reality (VR) developer Coatsink Software is synonymous with mobile titles, having launched Esper, Esper 2 and recently announcing Augmented Empireall for Samsung Gear VR. To coincide with today’s announcements from Samsung and its new Gear VR controller, the studio has unveiled a brand new title to arrive alongside the device next month, called A Night Sky.

A Night Sky will be a relaxing experience for Gear VR users with the Coatsink stating in the description: “A campfire crackles on the edge of a secluded vale as the player relaxes beneath the open sky. Using simple point and touch controls, the player connects the constellations above to form patterns among the stars. As different shapes are discovered, strange and wonderful creatures are brought to life that stride, bound and glide around the hillside.”

The videogame will arrive on 7th April 2017, and will be completely free to download.

While Samsung has previously announced that over 70 titles are in development that support the new controller only a few have so far been confirmed. These are Augmented Empire, Drop Dead, SingSpace, Rangi and Rooms.

Interestingly in Coatsink’s press release the studio states that: “Our experience will be released alongside nearly 20 other titles  (from other developers) to choose from in April for all Samsung gear users in celebration of the new Gear VR and Controller”. This is the best information yet on how many videogames will be available for the device at launch on 21st April.

If you’ve been following VRFocus’ coverage of Samsung Unpacked you’ll know about the new Gear 360 camera as well as the price of the new Gear VR controller and its specifications. US customers will also be able to make use of a Verizon Bundle deal.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Coatsink, reporting back with the latest announcements from the studio.

Preview: Augmented Empire – Coatsink goes tactical for this mobile RPG

If you could name a developer that knows how to make good mobile virtual reality (VR) titles, Coatsink would likely be up near the top. Having launched Esper and Esper 2 for Samsung Gear VR – both of which have seen positive reviews – the studio has now moved away from the first-person perspective with its next title, Augmented Empire, and to good effect.

Augmented Empire is a top-down, turn-based strategy title instantly reminiscent of the recent XCOM franchise. Set in a futuristic sci-fi world, you control various characters across the island of New Savannah, itself split into three tiers depending on where citizens are ranked in society, the grim streets for those deemed ‘unsavoury’ while the top levels are reserved for the upper echelon of society.

For the demo Coatsink showcased there were a couple of areas to work through, giving the basic outline of gameplay. The first was essentially a training mission in the streets while the second took place in a graveyard, with complete freedom to experiment with the layout. If you’ve played titles such as XCOM you should be instantly familiar with Augmented Empire’s tactics. From the starting point your character can move a certain distance, you can choose to move them into a wide open space (very unwise) or select some suitable cover to move to depending on the enemies present. The control layout for this is point and click, quick, simple and effective, just highlight where you want your character to go and hit the touchpad.

As the title is turn-based you can then select attack or reposition to flank your opponents – this will then benefit you when shooting. Shooting is this genre of videogame has usually boiled down to percentages, how well the character can see an enemy, their current equipment, stats and so forth, taking away direct control of the mechanic itself, simply telling you if it’s a hit or miss. Coatsink has taken a more interactive approach to the concept, enabling you to have a much greater degree of control over the whole process. While attributes like those previously mentioned do come into effect, you also have a moving bar to control. This moves from left to right, with highlighted areas in light blue and dark blue. Pressing the touchpad whilst in the dark blue area will score a hit, while the much smaller light blue area will gain you a critical hit, miss both and you fail. You have to be quick, but it’s a system that works really well and keeps you involved in the action rather than just being an overseer.

This process has also been implemented for enemy attacks and you must be even more astute if there are multiple hostiles. Their attacks can come in rapid succession and if you’re unlucky can easily wipe out your character if you’ve not managed to avoid them.

The second mission gives you control over two characters, opening up the tactical possibilities of the game. In the final version of the videogame you’ll be able to choose three to take on missions out of a possible six, for now though just two were playable. To increase the difficulty three hostiles needed dispatching, with one of them a much more heavy, durable unit. This was a far more exciting mission to play through, as the chances for failure were greater with better flanking opportunities.

Even from this short demo the whole feel of Augmented Empire felt taught and engaging. Nothing glitched or suddenly didn’t function, and the mix between action and strategy was spot on. If Coatsink can make Augmented Empire into a sizable title then its sure to attract a lot of attention from Gear VR users. Then there’s the added functionality of the new Gear VR controller to contend with, which could open up more possibilities.

Coatsink Confirm New Gear VR Controller Support for Augmented Empire

During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2017, British studio Coatsink Software revealed its latest virtual reality (VR) title Augmented EmpireWhile the new videogame has garnered interest, VRFocus has learned the upcoming project will support the newly revealed Gear VR controller.

Looking to rival Google’s Daydream controller, the Gear VR model was unveiled during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Spain just prior to GDC. Featuring a touchpad, trigger, home and back buttons plus volume control, there’s not yet been official confirmation on motion control input.

Augmented Empire screenshot2

At an Oculus event in London, VRFocus caught up with Eddie Beardsmore, COO of Coatsink, who confirmed that Augmented Empire has been designed to work with the aforementioned controller, as well as Gear VR’s touchpad and other Bluetooth controllers.

During MWC Oculus also stated that: ‘more than 70 new controller titles are already in development’ without clarifying title’s or development studio’s involved.

As yet, there’s been no announcement regarding a launch day for the new controller or Augmented Empire, or what the device will retail for. Samsung Unpacked takes place on 29th March 2017, so expect further details to emerge around that time.

Augmented Empire is a top down, tactical role-playing game (RPG), using a look-and-click control scheme. Players control a band of misfits by putting them in cover, moving them to flanking positions, setting them on overwatch, or attacking, very reminiscent of titles such as XCOM and XCOM 2.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Augmented Empire and Coatsink Software, reporting back with the latest updates.

Coatsink Software Release More Augmented Empire Screenshots

Earlier this week, VRFocus reported on the announcement of Coatsink Software’s new game Augmented Empire. Now they’ve revealed some more screenshots so we can get a closer look.

Coatsink, who have previously seen success with their games Esper and Esper 2, are going for a tactical role-playing game (RPG) set in a futuristic noir-style city that is divided into a strict three-tier caste system referred to as the ‘Citizen Grade System’.

Gameplay involved the player instructing a team of what Coatsink describe as ‘augmented misfits’ to do certain tasks while the player interacts with an augmented reality (AR) office to make telephone calls, manage the skills of their team and investigate new developments within the game world.

Coatsink was founded in 2009 by Tom Beardmore and Paul Crabb. They received considerable success in the virtual reality (VR) area with Esper and Esper 2.

There is as of yet no confirmed price point or release date for Augmented Empire, but Coatsink have confirmed it will be out for the Gear VR some time in 2017. You can see the new screenshots below.

VRFocus will continue to bring you updates on Augmented Empire as they are released.

Esper Dev Reveals Next Gear VR Title Augmented Empire

Today UK-based virtual reality (VR) developer Coatsink Software – the studio behind popular series Esper and Esper 2, as well as Gang Beasts – has announced it’s latest title, Augmented Empire.

Going for a tactical role-playing game (RPG) this time around, Augmented Empire takes players to an isolated neo-noir city, set on an island called New Savannah. This futuristic metropolis has a society divided into three tiers by the ‘Citizen Grade System’, with citizens deemed of high value to society live an opulent lifestyle at the soaring heights of the city, those seen as less savoury have to live their lives in the squalid depth’s.

Augmented Empire screenshot2 Augmented Empire features a simple and intuitive look-and-click control scheme, whereby players control a band of misfits though top-down worlds, putting them in cover, moving them to flanking positions, putting them in overwatch, or when the time is right, taking out enemy forces.

This plays out a an augmented reality (AR) diorama inside that players office. Away from the AR world, players will be able to interact with the office around them, investigating new developments, making calls, and developing the skills of their team.

An exclusive for Samsung Gear VR, Coatsink plans on releasing Augmented Reality later this year. For the latest updates on Coatsink Software developments, keep reading VRFocus.

Win Esper & Esper 2 On Gear VR Or Oculus Rift

Both the puzzle titles involve solving increasing complex brain-teasers by way of telekinesis. The story is set in 1975, members of the public begin to display extra-sensory abilities and the government paranoid as it is, starts forcing citizens to undergo aptitude tests under the guise of national security. As an unwitting citizen taking part in these tests players are ‘encouraged’ by a government contractor – voiced by Eric Meyers – to prove they are not a threat by completing various tests using their new found abilities.

While the original was purely lab based Esper 2 takes it up a notch, expanded the premise, by taking the player out of the confining lab and onto telekinetic adventure around the world. Lending their voices to a new bunch of characters longside Eric Meyers are actors Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul) Lara Pulver (Spooks, Sherlock) and Sean Pertwee (Dog Soldiers, Event Horizon, Gotham)

Esper: The Collection Launches with Week Long Discount

Last month Coatsink Software revealed the upcoming launch of its Esper: The Collection title. Supporting the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) it features both puzzle titles, Esper and Esper 2 in one package for the very first time. And not only will the package allow players to get their hands on both videogames for one all in price, but for the first week there will also be a further discount.

For the next week from today Oculus Rift owners buying Esper: The Collection will be able to get 33 percent off the regular price, dropping the cost down from £10.99 GBP to £7.99.

Esper 2 PreviewArt Oculus Rift 005

Both titles originally appeared on the Samsung Gear VR, and Coatsink has not forgotten the system. Both Esper and Esper 2 on Gear VR will have a 50 percent discount available for the next 7 days.

The series revolves around players having telekinetic abilities. Esper is a first-person puzzle game set in 1975 when members of the public begin to display extra-sensory abilities. So the government under the guise of national security starts forcing citizens to undergo rigorous aptitude tests. As one of these people, players will be ‘encouraged’ by a government contractor to prove they are not a threat by completing various tests using their telekinesis.

Then for Esper 2 Coatsink expanded the videogame further, moving beyond the confines of the lab taking the player on a telekinetic adventure across the globe. Alongside the expanded gameplay Esper 2 is most notable for the introduction of new characters voiced by actors Nick Frost, Lara Pulver and Sean Pertwee, who join Eric Meyers, the vocal talent from the original game.

VRFocus reviewed Esper 2 back in December 2015, giving it our highest rating. For all the latest VR releases keep reading VRFocus.
