Chess Ultra Brings High-Ticket Chess Sets to DLC

London-based company Purling produces bespoke, hand-painted chess sets that are more works of art than normal gaming sets. These exclusive items are normally out of reach of most people, but thanks to Chess Ultra publisher and develop Ripstone teaming up with Purling, you might have the chance to admire virtual copies of some of its famous sets.

Purling produces Art Chess sets which are widely admired, though since they are all one-off bespoke items, the price is accordingly high – too high for most. The Chess Ultra X Purling London collection brings those sets into reach of everyone.

Mr Jiver Chell Ultra

The Ripstone development team have worked with Purling artists to carefully model the Purling London chess sets in highly detailed 4K resolution in order to properly match the details of the real-life versions.

Four Purling sets will be available in the Chess Ultra collection:

  • Chess Ultra X Purling London Bold Chess – Purling London’s best-selling set. The pieces are hardwood finished with glossy lacquer to combine the modern with classic.
  • Chess Ultra X Purling London Olivia Pilling Art Chess – Created by artist Olivia Pilling, each piece has been given an abstract design in a rich colour palette to create a stylish statement.
  • Chess Ultra X Purling London Mr. Jiver Art Chess – London-based street artist Mr. Jiver created a chess that features colourful and distinctive graffiti art across each piece.
  • Chess Ultra X Purling London Nette Robinson Art Chess – Created by artist and chess player Nette Robinson, this chess set was inspired by Russian landmarks.

Purling London’s founder, Simon Purkis conceived of the company’s Art Chess line. “I discovered the long history of art and chess, but found that many artist designed chess sets were exquisitely beautiful, but impractical to play. I was inspired to collaborate with artists to create meaningful and handsome artworks based on the iconic Staunton shape. Tradition with a twist”

Chess Ultra is available on Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, currently available with a 20% discount, bringing the price to £7.99 (GBP). The title is available for the PlayStation VR. VRFocus will continue to bring you further news on Chess Ultra as it becomes available.

Play Chess For Your Soul In Chess Ultra

Best known as a videogames publisher rather than a developer, Ripstone Games has announced the launch of the first title to be entirely developed by its in-house development team; Chess Ultra.

The title will be heading to PC and console, with virtual reality (VR) versions available for PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. Non-VR versions will also be released on Steam, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and the company have also announced that the title will be heading to the Xbox One X.

Ripstone Games have revealed that the AI for Chess Ultra was tested an approved by a chess Grandmaster. Single-player within VR consists of the player taking on The Grim Reaper, playing against Death himself to save their mortal soul. If players do well, Death’s eyes with light up with rage and lava will flow through the pits of Gomorrah where the chess duel is taking place. If the player loses, then Death claims their soul.

There are 10 Grand-master approved levels, with several modes including Classical, Blitz and Marathon, all of which feature several different styles of chess set to choose from. Cross-platfrom play between console and PC has been included, the allow for both local and online multiplayer, along with a ranking system. Over 80 chess puzzles have been included, and there are tutorials for players who are new to chess.

To support online play, Ripstone plans to hold official tournaments where users can either spectate or compete, using the full Twitch integration to allow players to show off how well (or how poorly) they perform against friends or the AI.

See Just Why Chess Ultra Gets Its Name In These Screenshots

Ripstone Games’ Chess Ultra is less than two weeks away from launch, so now is good time to get up close and personal with the videogame in these new screenshots. Chess Ultra has to be one of the pretiest but also one of the darkest takes on the classic board game that we’ve ever seen; it even includes an apparent battle with the Grim Reaper, someone whom we seem to be seeing a lot of lately.

Which is, to be frank, somewhat concerning.

This is not to say that Chess Ultra is all style and no substance, though such aesthetics – especially the aforementioned gloomy encounter with Death – no doubt add a degree of tension to a potentially already tense gameplay, especially when surrounded by it in  virtual reality (VR).

Pore over the Chess Ultra screenshots below (which were captured from the PlayStation 4 version of the videogame) and if you’re interested, you can take a further look at the PC equivilent on Steam. Play the Grim Reaper and Save Your Soul in Chess Ultra This Month

Back in February British indie developer Ripstone Games announced virtual reality (VR) compatible board game Chess Ultra, due to be released for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR this year. Today, the studio has confirmed a launch date and released a brand new trailer showcasing a previously undisclosed feature, a game with the Grim Reaper.

As you may expect Chess Ultra is about one thing the classic, centuries old game of chess. Not content with providing just your average chess videogame, Ripstone Games has added a wealth of features, whether you’re new to the game or an experienced pro.

Chess Ultra - Grim Reaper Renders

Featuring high-resolution 4K environments, Chess Ultra has in-depth tutorials to start newbies off, learning what piece does what and the myriad of tactics that can be used. Matches can be played either locally or online, with cross-platform support available as well as time controls, including Classical, Blitz and Marathon.

There are over 80 chess puzzles to complete, and for those well versed in the game, ten grandmaster approved AI levels are included to really test those skills out. Additionally, Chess Ultra includes full Twitch integration so that matches can be viewed online and invite fans to play against their community. There will also be official Ripstone tournaments to spectate and compete in.

Lastly there’s the Grim Reaper – seen right at the end of the trailer – specifically for VR. Players can challenge Death in the pits of Gomorrah, putting their mortal soul in jeopardy. Play well and he’ll get angry, his eyes burn with rage and the lava will flow ferociously. Lose, and he’ll reach over and take their soul.

If you want to see the Twitch integration in action, Ripstone is hosting a livestream on Twitch at 4pm BST time on 7th June, where viewers can play Chess Ultra against the team and ask questions about the videogame.

Chess Ultra will be released on 21st June 2017 via Steam and PlayStation Store. For further updates from Ripstone Gameskeep reading VRFocus.

GDC 2017: Pure Chess Sequel Coming To PSVR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift

GDC 2017: Pure Chess Sequel Coming To PS VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift

A few days ago, Experiment 7 revealed their partnership with Wizards of the Coast and the first game to surface from the deal: Dungeon Chess. The game blends the classic chess game with the world of Dungeons & Dragons, using the VR platform to bring the chess pieces to life. Ripstone Games, the publisher behind Pure Pool and Pure Hold ‘Em, is dipping their toe into in-house development for the first time with Chess Ultra and they’re aiming for a visually impressive classic take on the game.

A sequel to 2012’s Pure Chess, Chess Ultra has been built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 4 and has some pretty incredible visuals if the trailer is a true testament to the final product. The team is crafting a 4k build for PS4, Xbox One, and Steam but the game will also be coming to PSVR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. In the press release for the game, there’s not a wealth of information on features, but it does look like there’s the expected focus on delivering a multiplayer experience on top of a collection of 10 AI levels for single player. Online, you’ll be able to face your friends or tackle regular, Fischer, or marathon matches.  You’ll also be able to stream with Twitch integration that allows you to play against your viewing community.

To garner a bit of excitement for the chess game, Ripstone Games is currently hosting a stream where fans can play against chess Grand Master Simon Williams and see the streamer vs audience feature in action. Chess Ultra is currently in Alpha and the team is expecting to release the full game during the Spring. We’re not 100% sure if the VR versions of the game will be available on launch day, but the team will be revealing more information in the coming months.
