The VR Drop: A Thursday Downpour of VR Wonder

Oh my, when it rains it rains hard in VR. And there’s no better example than next week when five titles all drop on exactly the same day. Not all for the same platform, mind, but still next Thursday is going to be a busy one for all you VR gamers out there.

The Tale of Onogoro

The Tale of Onogoro – Amata K.K.

The next VR title from the Japanese team behind Last Labyrinth, The Tale of Onogoro is set to be another weird puzzle adventure; just with far less gore. In this tale, you’ve pulled through from another dimension by a high priestess (Haru) tasked with defeating five powerful monsters called Kami. Unfortunately, she has been betrayed and finds herself tethered to a rather large stone. So you have to solve puzzles, help Haru navigate the world, and then defeat the odd giant boss or two.

  • Supported platform(s): Meta Quest 2
  • Launch date: 17th March

Outlier – Joy Way

A Steam Early Access release by Joy Way, the folks behind Stride and Against, in Outlier, you play someone looking for a new planet to call home. You get sucked into a black hole and find a suitable location, apart from all the dangerous enemies that is. And so begins a roguelite adventure where you have to fight a seemingly endless selection of enemies using guns and some rather mysterious powers. If you die, then it’s right back to the start, a little stronger and hopefully a little wiser for the next run.

Outlier

Startenders – Foggy Box Games

Time for a less dramatic videogame but no less hectic, serving some cosmic cocktails. gmw3 liked Startenders in our preview last month, next week it’s your turn to enrol in the Startenders Academy where you’ll learn to prep an assortment of bizarre beverages, try and keep customers happy and maybe earn some cash to upgrade your equipment to make even better creations!

  • Supported platform(s): Meta Quest 1 & 2 and PlayStation VR
  • Launch date: 17th March

Mare – Visiontrick Media

The first of two ports next week, Visiontrick Media has been working hard on bringing its Meta Quest exclusive Mare to PC VR. With some beautifully scenic visuals, Mare is a casual puzzle title where you play a mechanical bird helping a small child traverse a desolate and dangerous land.

Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder – VRKiwi

Already on Steam Early Access, Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder is due to hit Oculus App Lab next Thursday, bringing its tunnelling adventure to the standalone headset. Playing a prospector looking for riches, you start out small and expand your camp to new places and dig for new treasures, uncovering a few secrets along the way. This launch will also feature the new Steam update adding a new biome to the experience.

  • Supported platform(s): Meta Quest 2 (App Lab)
  • Launch date: 17th March

Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder Burrows Onto Oculus App Lab Next Week

VRKiwi released Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder via Steam Early Access last September, receiving positive feedback from the few players who left it. Today, the studio has announced that this multiplayer adventure is coming to Meta Quest, arriving on Oculus App Lab and Sidequest later next week.

Cave Digger 2

The original Cave Digger was a fun little underground miner, encouraging you to dig ever deeper for riches. The sequel takes that initial premise and adds a lot more, including a 4-player co-op mode and a far more lavish dieselpunk world. Of course, there’s still plenty of mining to be done and secrets to discover.

Meta Quest 1 & 2 users not only get to play Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder natively on the platform, they’ll also be treated to a massive content update VRKiwi is rolling out for PC VR players as well. Called Escape from the Valley, the update adds a whole new biome to explore (the title’s third) featuring a dry lake bed where your base camp is located. Underneath lies the nest biome where you’ll come across two new enemy types – stronger than anything yet found in the game.

To help with this your tools are getting upgrades such as explosive damage-dealing changes, improving loot efficiency and general mobility. There will of course be a new ending to discover and two new graphic novel issues to enjoy, continuing the great adventurer Clayton’s story. You’ll need to find the pages throughout the world of Cave Digger.

Cave Digger 2

In Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder you begin as a prospector starting from a small camp, who needs to explore and excavate valuable resources to afford new items. As you descend deeper into the world you discover that something has already been here before.

Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder is set to arrive for the Meta Quest platform on 17th March 2022, either through App Lab or Sidequest, your pick. VRKiwi goes into more detail regarding the update in the below video. For continued updates on the early access videogame, keep reading gmw3.

Cave Digger 2

Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder – VRKiwi

The original Cave Digger was a quirky little title, dropping players in a mining experience all about finding riches and unlocking multiple endings. As the name implies, Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder takes things up a notch with an adventure videogame set within a wild west dieselpunk world. Providing both solo and multiplayer gameplay, you and three friends can mine your way through various biomes, upgrading tools and weapons to aid this dangerous journey deep underground.

Table of Tales: The Crooked Crown – Tin Man Games

Originally released for PlayStation VR in 2019, Table of Tales: The Crooked Crown is a single-player tabletop RPG. A mixture of swashbuckling and sorcery, you lead a party of scoundrels through more than 24 encounters utilising turn-based combat featuring dice, cards, skill checks and over 40 different types of enemy.

The DLC update is called Last Call and sees you head back into Batuu to recover an ancient artefact whilst the tales see you take on the role of a class four assassin droid IG-88 infiltrating a fortress. The second tale continues Ady’Sun Zee’s narrative set during the High Republic era.

Steam Next Fest to Feature VR Demos You Won’t Want to Miss

Steam Next Fest

Steam’s winter game festival back in February was a great way to get a look at some of the exciting virtual reality (VR) titles developers are working on and next week you get to do it all again. Wednesday will see the launch of the Steam Next Fest with hundreds of free playable demos across all genres. Where VR is concerned there won’t quite be that many but some choice demos will still be available.

Sam And Max VR

Whether you’re after some comedy capers, rhythm-action mayhem or something more serious, the Steam Next Fest has most VR genres covered. Cropping up first on VRFocus’ radar was Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual!, teaming up with the crime-fighting duo to battle aliens and take on challenging police training exercises. Or for those explores amongst you how about Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder set in a dieselpunk world where you become a penniless prospector hunting for riches.

Looking for something a bit more brutal and physical? Then why not try Undead Citadel where you have to fight hundreds of living corpses with all manner of medieval weaponry. Keeping with the fighting theme whilst adding a little rhythm, Against drops you in 1930s New York to hack, shoot and slice through a noir crime nightmare. In fact, this demo is already available.

VRFocus is also looking forward to testing out Into The Darkness, a single-player action-adventure that mixes up puzzles and combat in a world with highly accurate physics. Joy Way, the team behind Against have a second title appearing in the festival, Outlier, a roguelite adventure with procedurally generated levels and RPG elements.

The Steam Next Fest runs from 16th – 22nd June 2021. In addition to the free demos there will also be livestreams and chances to speak with some of the developers. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.

Head Back Underground in 2021 With Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder

Cave Digger 2 header

Finnish virtual reality (VR) developer VRKiwi launched its mining adventure Cave Digger back in 2018 for PC VR headsets followed by Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR support in 2019. Now the team has revealed its working on a sequel with plans to launch the videogame next year.

Cave Digger: Riches
Cave Digger

The studio is planning a bigger, more expansive experience for Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder thanks to the originals success as well as new investment funding the team raised to help develop their publishing business.

Cave Digger 2 is going to be better in every aspect, we are adding many big features, we have many new resources and the community has provided us great feedback,” says VRKiwi producer Jani Kaipainen in a statement. “It’s going to be a different experience in many ways than the first Cave Digger but we want to keep the original Cave Digger feel, which is unique. We are going to deliver you Cave Digger 2 Early Access later in 2021. Are you looking forward to mining, treasures and dangers with your friends in VR? We are for sure.”

Whilst Cave Digger is based around mining the gameplay offers a few surprises along the way so that its not all about looking for some shiny gemstones. Set in an alternative western universe with a liberal dose of dark humour, you head down the mine shaft pickaxe in hand to find riches in four underground levels. As you do so the choices you make will determine which of nine endings you’ll get.

Cave Digger: Riches

Along the way you can upgrade your tools either making them more efficient or unlocking new ones like the chaos gauntlet. Updates include The Earthly Arrival which added new mysterious looking statues and more interactive elements in the town. In the summer the team also released a standard PC version.

Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder is still in the early stages of production with the team currently expecting the Early Access release to take place in either Q2 or Q3 2021. As further project updates are released, VRFocus will let you know.
