Finnish virtual reality (VR) developer VRKiwi launched its mining adventure Cave Digger back in 2018 for PC VR headsets followed by Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR support in 2019. Now the team has revealed its working on a sequel with plans to launch the videogame next year.

Cave Digger: Riches
Cave Digger

The studio is planning a bigger, more expansive experience for Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder thanks to the originals success as well as new investment funding the team raised to help develop their publishing business.

Cave Digger 2 is going to be better in every aspect, we are adding many big features, we have many new resources and the community has provided us great feedback,” says VRKiwi producer Jani Kaipainen in a statement. “It’s going to be a different experience in many ways than the first Cave Digger but we want to keep the original Cave Digger feel, which is unique. We are going to deliver you Cave Digger 2 Early Access later in 2021. Are you looking forward to mining, treasures and dangers with your friends in VR? We are for sure.”

Whilst Cave Digger is based around mining the gameplay offers a few surprises along the way so that its not all about looking for some shiny gemstones. Set in an alternative western universe with a liberal dose of dark humour, you head down the mine shaft pickaxe in hand to find riches in four underground levels. As you do so the choices you make will determine which of nine endings you’ll get.

Along the way you can upgrade your tools either making them more efficient or unlocking new ones like the chaos gauntlet. Updates include The Earthly Arrival which added new mysterious looking statues and more interactive elements in the town. In the summer the team also released a standard PC version.

Cave Digger 2: Dig Harder is still in the early stages of production with the team currently expecting the Early Access release to take place in either Q2 or Q3 2021. As further project updates are released, VRFocus will let you know.

Mining Sim Cave Digger Coming To Quest, New Expansion Announced

“Immersive Mining Simulator” can safely be filed under game genres I’d probably never play if they weren’t in VR, so thankfully Cave Digger by VRkiwi is on basically every major 6DOF VR headset available.

Today, the developers have announced that not only is a massive new update dubbed Railway to the Depths releasing soon that adds a ton of new features, but it’s also coming to the Oculus Quest. The game is already available on Steam for all major SteamVR platforms (Rift, Vive, Windows VR, and Index) as well as on Oculus Home for Rift (and soon Quest,) Viveport for Vive, Rift, and Windows VR, plus the PSN Store for PSVR.

Cave Digger: Railway to the Depths Trailer:

Currently the base game, basically a demo, is available for free. But if you want the full experience, you need to buy the Riches DLC. There’s also an optional paid Supporters Pack that adds access to the OST, your name on wanted posters for players to see, and a gold-plated pickaxe. It’s got great physics and mechanics, plus lots of different types of ore and rewards to unlock. However, it all takes place in a single elevator that goes deeper gradually over time. At least it did until this newest update.

“We felt the game wasn’t finished yet and there was a lot of potential if we let the players wander outside of the elevator,” says VR Producer Jani Kaipainen in a prepared statement. “I think by giving this update for free, the game offers enough exploration and adventure for the price tag. Our sincere thanks go also to Business Finland and Oculus for making this possible. We are excited to announce more VR productions later this year.”

If you buy the Riches DLC then you get the new Railway to the Depths update entirely for free. This includes “many hours” of new gameplay including a free-roaming expanded world, a new ending, a companion to help you carry more riches, and an upgradeable train to traverse the newly expanded world.

Cave Digger: Railway to the Depths releases as a free update to the paid Riches DLC on all platforms on September 19th. You can also join the Discord community to chat with other players and the developers directly.

Cave Digger Tunnels Into PlayStation VR for US and European Customers

After a PC release in 2018 on Steam for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality, Cave Digger then arrived for PlayStation VR during last week’s hectic Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019, but only for UK customers. Today, developer MeKiwi has announced a wider global rollout for European and North American gamers.

Cave Digger

As the name implies, Cave Digger is a virtual reality (VR) mining videogame that has a few surprises in store. Starting with the ever trusty pickaxe, you head down the mine shaft to dig for new wealth, looking to find all sorts of riches in the rocks. The more you dig the more you’ll be rewarded, which in turn can be spent on new tools.

You’ll be able to upgrade your pickaxe and make it automatic, an energy efficient saw, or if you’re really successful the chaos gauntlet, which is powered by powerful gems found in the cave.

And there are mysteries down in the dark, depending on how you play there are eight endings to uncover some far more devious than others. Additionally, there’s a competitive mode to test your skills against other players.

Cave Digger: Riches

“We are very happy to reach players in each store, now in PSVR too, but our excitement doesn’t end here!” said Mekiwi’s COO Jani Kaipainen in a statement. “We are working on a very big expansion to feed the hunger of quality VR content hunters out there and now is a great time to catch this game and get familiar with it!”

Mekiwi has confirmed that the expansion will be free for all Cave Digger owners, regardless of platform. It should lengthen gameplay by several hours whilst adding new mechanics and ways to play the experience. There’s no date just yet for the update release.

Cave Digger is out today for PlayStation VR in North America and Europe. For further updates keep reading VRFocus.

Cave Digger Emerges On US PSVR Next Week, Expansion Announced

Cave Digger Emerges On US PSVR Next Week, Expansion Announced

MeKiwi will send VR fans back down into the mines next week when Cave Digger finally arrives on PSVR.

The VR mining game (yes, it really is a VR mining game) hits Sony’s headset on March 25th. Eagle-eyed fans will know the game already launched in the UK last week, but it’ll catch up with a wider EU and US release then. The PSVR version requires a PlayStation Move controller. MeKiwi confirmed to UploadVR that the console edition comes with the game’s previously-released DLC too. Check it out in the trailer below.

The PSVR version features all of the same content seen in last year’s PC VR release. In Cave Digger VR you journey down into the mines in search of gold and other treasures. As you collect lucrative materials you can spend cash on upgraded gear like drills and dynamite. New items will let you collect new materials like oil, too. The game features eight different endings to uncover as well as a competitive mode to test your skills in. And who said VR doesn’t let you live out your dreams?

Not only that but a new expansion pack is on the way too. MeKiwi COO Jani Kaipainen explained that the expansion will add several hours worth of gameplay and completely new mechanics to the game. Exact details are being kept under wraps for now but it will be free for all players from PSVR to PC VR.

Cave Digger costs £7.99 in the UK, so expect the US pricing to come in around the $10 mark.

It’s the last day of August and what better way to round the month out than with VRFocus’ forth competition in as many weeks. We’ve given away codes for Carly and the Reaperman, Curiscope AR T-shirts, GNOG, and now it’s another Steam code bonanza. VRFocus has ten Steam keys to giveaway for newly released Cave Digger: Riches, which supports HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Cave Digger: Riches

Cave Digger is a comedic mining videogame that launched for free back in May. So why are we giving away codes? Currently retailing for £15.49 GBP on Steam, save yourself some cash and enter our competition below.

Riches are your goal in Cave Digger and to help you uncover them you’ll have to be inventive. Put those muscles to use with a pick-axe, or find enough gems and gold to upgrade and automate it. Or for those times when a manual tool just won’t cut it, a little bit of dynamite can go a long way.

The Biggest Rift, Vive And Windows Releases Of The Week 05/06/18

The Biggest Rift, Vive And Windows Releases Of The Week 05/06/18

After a busy week last week we return to a slower pace for VR releases, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some interesting VR experiences you should be on the lookout for.

Cave Digger, from Mekiwi
Price: Free (Rift, Vive)

This looks a little like a VR version of Steamworld Dig, and that’s a very good thing. You dive into the depths of a mine in search of precious resources before returning to the surface to cash in your findings and buy better equipment so you can travel deeper. We’re not exactly sure why this one’s free but, hey, we won’t complain.

Silicon Valley: Inside The Hacker Hostel, from HBO
Price: Free (Rift)

Head to the set of the popular Silicon Valley sitcom in this tie-in experiences. Dig into a faithful recreation of the nerd’s world and uncover mini-games and easter eggs. This is probably only worth it if you’re a fan of the show but, if you are, it’s a pretty fun experience.

School Fab Lab VR, from School Lab
Price: $49.99 (Vive)

This is a pretty intriguing, if surprisingly pricey experience. It allows you to visit a digital fabrication lab and test out state of the art equipment from laser cutters and 3D printers to drones and more.
