Catan VR Now Available For Oculus Quest And Quest 2

Surprise! Catan VR is now available for Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2.

While we did hear a few rumblings here and there, the announcement of a Catan VR release for Quest headsets has kind of taken us by surprise. It’s available to download right now for $14.99.

Catan VR originally launched for Oculus Rift and Gear VR in 2018, and later made its way onto the Oculus Go.

The VR version is based on the popular board game of the same name (previously known as Settlers of Catan) which released in 1995 and is designed for 3-4 players. On Oculus Quest, the game will support friend invites along with matchmaking, as well as an mode to play against AI opponents. Cross-platform play is also supported, so Quest players will be able to invite and compete against players on Rift or Go as well.

This VR version of Catan was developed in conjunction with the original Catan board game creators, father and son Klaus and Benjamin Teuber. Speaking of the Rift version in 2018, Klaus said that witnessing the game he developed with his father come to life in VR was incredible. “I never imagined actually stepping into the world of Catan when we first starting making cut-outs and dreaming about exploring new lands.”

A mobile AR game based on Catan is also being developed by Pokemon Go developers Niantic and is expected to open up in beta soon. You can read more about how to sign up here.

Catan VR is available for Oculus Quest and Quest 2 now for $14.99, supporting cross-play with Rift and Go players.

Catan VR

It’s been a big week for Oculus Quest news with revenue updates and the roll-out of App Lab, its new distribution channel. Among all of this Experiment 7 has revealed that the board game gem Catan VR is ready to launch on Oculus Quest.

Making the announcement over on its Discord channel, Experiment 7 has confirmed the Oculus Quest version of Catan VR will feature all the same content from previous versions of the virtual reality (VR) board game plus some extra goodies to further enhance the experience.

The studio notes there will be “additional private matchmaking functionality” but didn’t state what that would entail. This will only apply to the Oculus Quest version as the developer went onto add: “All other versions are still compatible for standard play – and we’re looking at the feasibility of porting the the private matchmaking updates to other platforms.”

Catan VR for Oculus Quest will also include a new room called ‘The Study’, new high-resolution textures and board animations; 90 Hz Mode for Oculus Quest 2, a higher-res display mode providing 1832p on Quest 2, and updated network and voice stability. Because of all these extra improvements Experiment 7 states: “The Quest 2 version is definitely the best version in performance, detail, and clarity that we’ve ever made.” So that’s something to look forward to.

CatanVR_Screenshot3

Experiment 7 brought the classic board game onto VR platforms back in 2018, originally supporting Oculus Rift and Gear VR followed by Steam and then PlayStation VR. Designed for up to four players, in Catan VR you play a settler who needs to establish colonies on the island of Catan. To do so you’ll need to acquire resources to build towns and roads whilst engaging in trade with other players. The end goal is to grow large enough to gain the ten victory points required to win.

Catan VR will be available on the Oculus Quest platform from Thursday, 4th February retailing for $14.99 USD. It’ll support cross-buy on the Oculus Store so if you already own the Rift version then you own the Quest edition as well. ‘Catan VR’ to Launch on PSVR Tomorrow, Cross-play with “major VR platforms”

After launching on PC VR & Oculus mobile VR headsets last year, Catan VR is finally making its way to PSVR.

The VR version of the 1995 classic board game Settlers of Catan first launched on the Oculus Store for Gear VR and Rift in March 2018, with Oculus Go support arriving shortly afterwards when the mobile headset launched back in May 2018. A version for Vive, Rift, and Windows VR came via Steam a few months later.

Starting June 25th, PSVR users will get a chance to jump in too, playing the game in an immersive online environment. Thankfully the game promises crossplay with “all major VR platforms.”

Described as “true to the classic but optimized for virtual reality,” Catan VR was developed by VR studio Experiment 7 in partnership with Klaus Teuber and his sons Guido and Benjamin, along with the Catan and Asmodee Digital teams. The board game takes place in a virtual room with views of the island of Catan itself through the windows.

“The absolute best part about Catan on PS VR is the sense of social presence you get when you jump into a game with friends or online opponents,” says Experiment 7 founder Geoffrey Zatkin.
Catan VR has a broad vocabulary of game experiences and the excitement of a great roll, the frustration of getting robbed, or the satisfaction of landing a big trade is really evident in the myriad micro-movements that you see other players exhibiting throughout the game.”

Catan VR offers both online multiplayer games as well as solo AI-based matches. According to a PS blog post, Experiment 7 worked directly with Klaus Teuber and his team to develop AI players that both “provide challenging tactical opponents at every difficulty level, but also express the canonical personalities that have made other versions of Catan so compelling.”

There’s no pricing info available just yet, although the game currently sells for $15 on Steam and the Oculus Store for Rift, and $10 on Gear VR/Oculus Go, so we expect pricing to hover somewhere around those two points.

Board Game Catan VR Coming to PlayStation VR Tomorrow

Traditional board games work surprisingly well in virtual reality (VR) like Tabletop Simulator for example. Another good example is Experiment 7’s VR adaption of strategy game Catan, originally launching Catan VR for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR last year. Today, the studio has revealed Catan VR will be coming to PlayStation VR tomorrow.

Catan VR - Screenshot

The original Catan is one of those legendary board games most fans of this form of entertainment should’ve tried at least once. With over 30 million copies sold, tactics are at the heart of its gameplay, no matter if you’re playing the physical version or the VR one.

Designed for up to four players, Catan VR is about taking on the role of a settler, needing to establish colonies on the islands of Catan whilst acquiring resources to build infrastructure and roads and engaging in trade with other players, all with aim of growing large enough to get the ten victory points needed to win. Depending on your settlements location you’ll gain different resources which can then be used to build useful items, or you can trade with players for required resources. However, there is a myriad of things going on so be careful not to get robbed.

While Catan VR is ideally suited to online multiplayer between friends, Experiment 7 has also included a single-player mode with different AI players to help hone those skills.  “We worked directly with Klaus Teuber and his team of incredible game designers to develop AI players that both provide challenging tactical opponents at every difficulty level, but also express the canonical personalities that have made other versions of Catan so compelling,” says Experiment 7 Founder, Geoffrey Zatkin on PS Blog. “For example, if you want to fine-tune your strategy with a more relaxed opponent, Mary Anne is a friendly player who just wants to build roads and have a good time. On the other hand, Jin will provide an aggressive challenge that will help you hone your skills for higher end play.”

On every other system Catan VR is on the title supports cross-play functionality for maximum player reach and diversity. It’s unclear if the PlayStation VR version will also include this. VRFocus will find out and report back with further updates.

The Best Samsung Gear VR Games of 2018

Samsung’s Gear VR headset was once the dominant mobile head-mounted display (HMD), it featured everywhere, in Samsung’s Unpacked events, standard videogame conferences, and institutions the world over as they looked to entertain visitors with new technology. But that position and stature have slowly faded, Samsung isn’t bundling the device with smartphones as it did and with the arrival of Oculus Go, VR enthusiasts can now go mobile with even more ease. That being said, there are a lot of Gear VR owners out there, and developers are still supporting the HMD. So here are VRFocus’ ten favourite videogames from the latest twelve months.

The Best Samsung Gear VR Games of 2018

Slightly Heroes

Slightly Heroes – Hatrabbit Entertainment

Whilst this isn’t a dedicated Gear VR title that’s no bad thing. In fact that works to Slightly Heroes advantage as the videogame is a one vs one online multiplayer, with cross-platform support, enabling you to battle those on Oculus Go, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Google Daydream, Windows Mixed Reality, Lenovo Mirage Solo, and the non-VR Android app. This should ensure there’s always someone to match against. If not there’s always AI enemies to dispatch.

Arca's Path

Arca’s Path VR – Dream Reality Entertainment

Arca’s Path VR takes the gameplay style of classics like Marble Madness and updates it for VR headsets. Featuring a dark storyline where you play a girl tricked by an evil witch, you’ve been turned into a ball and must navigate 25 labyrinthine levels in a bid to free yourself and return home. To do this, Dream Reality Interactive has employed a gaze-based control mechanism, meaning you just need to look where you want to go.

NARROWS_IMAGE2

Narrows – Resolution Games

Narrows lets you take to the high seas, heading to the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy to make your fortune. Combining real-time crew-management with ship-to-ship combat, there are plenty of customization options to tweak your cannons and crew for battle, plus rogue-like replayability. Gameplay also includes swashbuckling sword fights, charting your own course, and making sure your crew of misfits are healthy and fed.

Covert – White Elk

Covert features asymmetrical gameplay that lets two players work together to pull off a high-profile heist, whether they’re inside or outside of VR. This works by the VR player having to pull off the heist while their mate acts as the hacker accomplice on a mobile device, feeding them vital information. Being the multiplayer title that it is, make sure the mobile device is compatible with the app, Android 7.0 or iOS 6 and above.

Eclipse: Edge of Light – White Elk

Eclipse: Edge of Light’s story finds you crash landing on a sentient planet. Upon discovering the ruins of an ancient civilization, you then come across a device known as The Artifact, allowing you to interact with their technology whilst bestowing seemingly magical powers upon you. In order to uncover the secrets of the planet and this long-lost civilization, eventually hoping to escape, players must recover the pieces of The Artifact that have been scattered across the landscape.

Virtual Virtual Reality

Virtual Virtual Reality is a narrative-driven comedy adventure about VR and AI. Astraeus Screenshot5

Astraeus – E McNeill

Like E McNeill’s three previous VR videogames, Darknet, Tacteraand SkylightAstraeus is another deviously simple looking real-time strategy (RTS) experience that becomes a lot more complex the longer you play. Astraeus is a VR asteroid mining title where you need to build a mining network from dozens of bases and watch as hundreds of ships swarm around you. Your job is to control these swarms of mining drones, create the bases, and outpace the competition in Campaign, Skirmish, and asynchronous multiplayer modes.

Catan VR Releases Onto Steam

Fans of board games can rejoice as a new way to take part in classic tabletop title Catan has launched on Steam. Adapted from the classic German boardgame The Settlers of Catan, developers Experiment 7 have finally released the experience to Steam users.

Catan VR was originally announced back in 2017, where plans to bring the classic board game into virtual reality (VR) were revealed. The title was previously made available through the Oculus Store for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR.

CatanVR_Screenshot5

Players of Catan VR will be able to enter into a virtual environment where a virtual representation of the board game island is represented, though with a few VR, interactive twists. Players will be able to play a few rounds of Catan with friends, or take on AI opponents that have been taken from the board game itself.

The VR environment that you enter has been crafted to look like a rustic inn, wheat sways from beyond the windows and clouds roll gently over distant mountains while mandolin music drifts through the air.

Online match-making is available, so if you lack enough friends to play, you can seek out the worldwide Catan VR community to fill those empty slots if you don’t fancy playing against the AI. For those who do end up playing against the AI, the AI personas have been designed with guidance from Catan creator Klaus Teuber to correctly fit the feel of the game.

If you want to play with your friends, its no problem if they use a different VR system to you, since cross-play is supported between HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR, so any combinations of those can all play together.

CatanVR_Screenshot3

Catan VR will is available now on Steam for the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and windows Mixed Reality devices from the 13th June, 2018. The title costs £11.39 (GBP) but is currently having a special launch discount making it only £7.63 until the 5th July, 2018.

For news of other new and upcoming VR content, keep checking back with VRFocus.

Catan Is Coming To Vive/Windows With Rift/Gear/Go Cross-Play Soon

Catan Is Coming To Vive/Windows With Rift/Gear/Go Cross-Play Soon

Experiment 7’s VR conversion of popular boardgame, Settlers of Catan, is coming to an HTC Vive and/or Windows VR headset very soon.

A Steam page for the game, which released on the Oculus Rift, Oculus Go and Gear VR headsets in May, recently went live, promising HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality support. The page only says the game is ‘Coming Soon’, but the trailer seen on the store page notes that it’s ‘available now’. It sounds like launch is coming in the very near future, then.

A price isn’t listed, but the game costs $14.99 on the Oculus Store so we’d expect the same of the Steam release.

The best part? The SteamVR version is going to feature full cross-play support with the existing versions of the game, at least on Vive. That means Vive owners will be able to take on their friends that just picked up an Oculus Go, or settle old rivalries with the Rift. Cross-play support for Windows headsets isn’t mentioned despite native support being listed in the headsets section, though we wouldn’t be surprised to see it included.

Catan’s VR support is a real joy, perfectly transcribing a classic game into VR, so it’s great to see it come to more headsets.

VR Board Gaming Comes Alive With Catan VR

Experiment 7 are the masters of virtual reality (VR) board games, having initially launched Magic Table Chess followed by Dungeon Chess. Last month saw the team release their next immersive experience Catan VR for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. VRFocus caught up with Experiment 7 to discuss the new title and more.

CatanVR_Screenshot4

Catan VR arrived on the first day of the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2018, with attendees able to play it on not only Oculus Rift and Gear VR but also upcoming standalone headset Oculus Go. The event was the first time Oculus had demoed its new head-mounted display (HMD) to the public whilst confirming that Catan VR would be one of the launch titles for the device.

A joint project between Catan GmbH, Catan Studio, Asmodee Digital and Experiment 7, Catan VR remains true to the classic, but optimised for VR gameplay. Players take the role of settlers who need to establish colonies on the islands of Catan, acquiring resources to build infrastructure and roads whilst engaging in trade with other players, all with aim of growing large enough to get the ten victory points needed to win.

Featuring both single-player and multiplayer online modes, up to four people can play against one another in cross-platform gameplay, with Oculus Rift players having the added bonus of two hands compared with Gear VR and Oculus Go’s single controller.

Catan VR - Screenshot

Speaking to Demetri Detsaridis, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Experiment 7, VRFocus found out that the launch was delayed due to Oculus Go enabling the team to polish the title further whilst adding additional features like hand gestures to make the experience that bit more interactive and fun. Other options include being able to change the masks other players can see and swapping the environment if the classic look (seen above) isn’t to your liking.

Available on the Oculus Store for Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift, priced at £7.99 GBP and £10.99 respectively, VRFocus will continue its coverage of Experiment 7 and its latest VR projects.
