The VR Drop: March VR Variety

2022 is starting to kick into gear when it comes to virtual reality (VR) videogame launches. Next week is a perfect example with titles arriving for most headsets that aren’t all first-person shooters. There are some guns alongside pirates, musical flair, and bizarre mysteries to uncover. So take a look at what’s just around the corner.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister

Buccaneers! – Skyward Digital

Last week Skyward Digital released Buccaneers! The New Age of Piracy a free-to-play demo for its upcoming pirate adventure. Buccaneers! arrives this coming week, a single-player RPG where you become a fearsome captain waging naval warfare, with a campaign where you sign up with either the British, French or Spanish empires or the Buccaneers’ League. Engage in tense naval and land battles whilst customising your ship with new paint schemes, cannons and upgrades. Fight ship-to-ship combat then board enemy vessels and assault forts to loot the best treasure.

Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister – Pixel Toys

Having released Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister as a Meta Quest platform exclusive back in 2020 know it’s the turn of PC VR players. This is a non-stop action-adventure where you play the role of Sister Ophelia, a veteran Sister of Battle who is searching for her long lost twin sister whilst fighting to save all of humanity. Choose from Bolters, Plasma Pistols, Flamers, Las Rifles, Power Swords and Chainswords as you cut down heretics, Chaos Space Marines and even bigger foes.

Virtuoso

Virtuoso – Really Interactive

Want to unleash that inner musician in you or looking for new, innovative ways to create a beat? Then Virtuoso is for you. Build songs using some familiar and unfamiliar instruments, physically drum your own beat, use the Looper tool to create layer upon layer of sound or try your hand at the three-dimensional Oorgan. Utilise the six instruments to record tracks and share them with the community.

République: Anniversary Edition – Camouflaj

The mobile stealth adventure arrived back in 2013 and in the following years Camouflaj expanded support to VR headsets like Gear VR and Oculus Go. After a long wait, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR are finally getting support with République: Anniversary Edition. The 10-hour campaign puts the fate of Hope, a hacker, in your hands, guiding her by viewing each level through security cameras. The main difference with this anniversary edition is the addition of a developer’s commentary.

  • Supported platform(s): PlayStation VR
  • Launch date: 10th March
Hitchhiker

HitchHiker: A Mystery Game – Mad About Pandas

Last on the list for next week’s launch collection is HitchHiker: A Mystery Game. As the title suggests, you play a hitchhiker grabbing rides from strangers. With no memory of who you are the goal is to uncover your backstory by jumping in cars, visiting new locations and finding clues.

The VR Drop: An Early March Bonanza!

If you can tear yourself away from playing Elden Ring on your PC, PlayStation or Xbox – I know it’s hard – then there are a few virtual reality (VR) videogames arriving next week worth your time. They may all be indie gems rather than blockbuster sensations but they all look awesome in their own right.

Lost in Place

Lost in Place – Bright Corners

First up is cute puzzler Lost in Place. The gameplay is simple enough, all you need to do is pilot a tiny, fragile spaceship through a bunch of everyday environments. “The ship is very touchy, quite expensive, and it will break on just about everything,” explains developer Bright Corners, so you’ll have to be very patient across the 50 levels. It’s already out on Meta Quest’s App Lab and will now join SteamVR.

Buccaneers! The New Age of Piracy – Skyward Digital

Time for some pirate shenanigans with Buccaneers! The New Age of Piracy, a single-player RPG where you become a fearsome captain waging naval warfare on anyone who comes too close. Engage in tense naval and land battles whilst customising your ship with new paint schemes, cannons and upgrades. This is purely ship-to-ship combat either, you’ll be able to board enemy vessels and assault forts to loot the best treasure.

Vox Machinae

Vox Machinae – Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation

Having been a Steam Early Access title since 2018, now it’s time for Vox Machinae’s official PC VR launch, with one extra edition; the mech combat experience is coming to Meta Quest 2 as well. Primarily an online, team-based multiplayer where you jump into giant mechs to destroy one another, next week’s launch will see new features including a story-driven campaign with evil corporations and a cast of characters to bring it all to life.

Labyrinth deLux – A Crusoe Quest – Enigma/K5 Factory

Taking inspiration from the likes of Talos Principle and God of LightLabyrinth deLux – A Crusoe Quest is a laser-based puzzler that blends Mayan and Aztec culture into its sci-fi gameplay. Featuring a narrative where you play a space trucker called Robin, pulled wildly off course into an abandoned space station, there are 16 puzzles to solve.

Labyrinth deLux

NeonHAT – Entalto Studios

Entalto Studios originally created NeonHAT as part of Playstation Talents Games Camp Valencia, with the videogame hitting PlayStation VR last summer. Soon it’ll be the turn of PC VR headsets, offering players the chance to test their skills in this neon-drenched racer. NeonHAT features ten courses across three gameplay modes; Extreme Derby, Race, and Pursuit, with five bosses to take care of.

Watch Super Bowl LV For Free In VR This Weekend With Bigscreen

This weekend you can watch the Super Bowl in VR, for free, in Bigscreen on Quest, Rift, Index, Vive, WMR, or any other SteamVR headset.

Almost two years ago Bigscreen began offering TV channel features and has expanded to include actual paid movie premieres and ad-supported free movies, in addition to the multitude of ways VR users can just hang out and share their screens in VR. Now, thanks to CBS Sports broadcasting the Super Bowl for free online, Bigscreen is adding the big game to the list.

This Sunday, February 7th, anyone with a compatible VR headset (basically a Quest or PC VR headset) can jump into Bigscreen and hang out with people from all over the world and watch the Super Bowl live for free.

If you’re on PC VR you can host your own private room, but if you’re on Quest you’ll have to join an existing room from your headset. The CBS Sports livestream will be featured prominently on the home page so it’ll be like walking into a series of sports bars to hang out and enjoy the game with likeminded NFL fans.

The Super Bowl LV event in Bigscreen kicks off on Sunday, February 7th, at 3:30 PM PT when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For the first time in the history of the NFL, one of the teams in the Super Bowl is the host city for the event. Since the locations are planned years in advance, it’s always been impossibly rare, making this a historic game regardless of the outcome.

First VR Trailer for Pirate Adventure Buccaneers! Spotted

Who doesn’t love being a pirate? In virtual reality (VR) you can be a space pirate or a traditional seafaring scourge. For those that love the vision of finding treasure on the seven seas and feel titles like Battlewake are a bit too arcade oriented then  Buccaneers! might be what you’re looking for. Currently being developed by Skyward Digital, the team has just released the first VR gameplay trailer.

Buccaneers!

Being built from the ground up for VR to support Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Oculus Go headsets, a non-VR version will also be released for PC and Xbox One. Buccaneers! will offer a first-person single-player adventure where players can choose from one of four factions – each with its own unique abilities – before taking command of their ship and heading out into the Caribbean to search for fame and fortune. All inspired by classics such as Sid Meier’s Pirates! and the Sea Dogs series.

Buccaneers! promises a range of combat scenarios, both at sea and on land. Most of the gameplay takes place at sea, with players manning the cannons to either scuttle or incapacitate other ships. Once close enough they’ll then be able to board those unfortunate vessels and deal with any souls with weapons including swords, pistols and muskets.

With a distinctive low-poly aesthetic, the team explains: “At first, it was a VR-only concept, with the intention of making a game that could scale between high and low-end devices while still looking visually pleasing. This led to the low-poly art style, and after a few prototypes, the fundamentals of the game began to take shape, focusing on ship battles, limited land exploration and basic quests.”

Buccaneers!

The eventual goal in Buccaneers! is to build up a powerful fleet by capturing ships, purchasing new ones and completing quests, allowing the player to take on coastal forts and gain land for their faction.

Check out the first trailer showcasing VR gameplay below. Skyward Digital has yet to reveal a release date or price for Buccaneers! but it will be coming to both the Oculus Store and Steam. For further updates, keep reading VRFocus.
