Bublar Group Buys Out Swedish AR/VR Company Vobling

As the immersive technology industry matures, expect to see a lot of change happening as new companies are formed, then close or are bought out by larger companies, or merge together to form a bigger company. Bublar Group is already established as a publically listed augmented reality (AR) videogame studio, but the company has now acquired Swedish AR and virtual reality (VR) studio Vobling.

The acquisition will see the combined companies becoming the largest publically listed AR/VR solutions company in the Nordic region, giving them a strong position in the business-to-business market in that area.

The deal is said to be worth $5.5 million (USD), with Vobling’s worth coming from a combination of stock and cash. The expanded team will be aimed at ramping up production capacity for both corporate customers as well as the videogame portfolio, particularly with the company’s Hello Kitty AR title., which is expected to be released in 2019

“The AR/VR market is growing rapidly,” says Magnus Granqvist, CEO of Bublar Group. Through this acquisition, we strengthen our gaming studio with state-of-the art knowledge, production resources and the ability to capture opportunities from the corporate market. Together, we will work towards the goal of becoming the leading AR/VR company in Europe.”

“We are proud of the competent, profitable and fast-growing company we have built,” says Anders Ribbing, CEO of Vobling. “The industry is now on the cusp of major breakthroughs in AR/VR technology, evidenced by growing demand for our products and services. The synergies with Bublar will serve to increase our joint potential.”

As part of the terms of the acquisition, Vobling will become a subsidiary of Bublar, and will function under the Vobling brand. Vobling has previously worked on projects in education, videogames and entertainment as well as marketing, real estate and transportation, mostly involving VR and AR.

Bublar Group Are Developing A Hello Kitty AR Mobile Videogame

The ever popular and lovable Hello Kitty is to get her own augmented reality (AR) mobile videogame following a new license agreement between Sanrio GmbH, subsidiary of Sanrio Co. Ltd. and the Swedish game studio Bublar Group AB. This will see Hello Kitty and a number of Sanrio’s characters, including the popular Little Twin Stars, My Melody and Gudetama, come together in a new gaming experience.

Bublar

“At Bublar, our mission is to merge the real and imaginary worlds together in a fun way, connecting Augmented Reality and digital content to real world locations” Said Magnus Granqvist, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bublar Group AB. “We are looking forward to bringing the beloved Hello Kitty and a variety of other Sanrio characters to the AR world. Hello Kitty has been creating smiles worldwide for almost 45 years.”

The videogame is being designed and developed to allow players to use their smartphone or other compatible devices to interact with the virtual characters in real-world locations. The world will become filled with hidden Kawaii magic and treasures and it will fall down to the players to find and track it all. By leverage the latest technology in location-based AR, the studio is hoping to create a multiplayer title in which the world around them will come to life full of material that fans of the characters will know and love.

“With this game, our passionate fan base can meet and engage with all Sanrios’ characters in mixed reality” Said Simon Gresswell, Chief Operating Officer, Sanrio GmbH. “We have been inspired by Bublar’s creative team and AR knowledge; their passion for creating innovative mobile games and apps is of the highest level.”

Other features of the title include the chance for players to find and collect resources and items to build and expand their very own Kawaii village. Clues will need to be located in order to uncover the mysteries of the Shanrio universe and all of this can be explored on your own or with friends as you unlock more characters to play with. The title is set to launch sometime in 2019 and until then, fans of the characters should look forward to an interesting AR experience.

VRFocus will be sure to bring you all the latest on the title in the future, so stay tuned for more.

So You Wanna Be A Boxer? ARKit-Powered Glowing Gloves Will See If You Can Pass The Test

The connection between virtual reality (VR) and the world of sport remains strong. For those unaware every weekend on VRFocus we bring you a round-up of various stories from around the world that revolve around how the worlds of sport and immersive technology collide, and it is surprising just how many different sports have been touched in some way by VR.

In the most part This Week In VR Sport does not involve videogames, but the same is certainly true here. With many different sporting competitions now represented through some form of gaming experience. One sport receiving a number of experiences in recent months is boxing. We brought you news back in January of how Floyd Mayweather Boxing + Fitness Gyms were introducing VR training schemes at their locations, Oculus Rift videogame Boxing Apocalypse took the fight into space and as recently as GDC 2018 Survios’ Creed: Rise to Glory took to the ring.

Now we’ve another boxing title to add to the mix – but this time it’s not a VR boxing experience, but an augmented reality (AR) one for iOS, and powered by Apple’s popular AR development platform ARKit. The videogame in question is Glowing Gloves, a first-person immersive boxing title which has just entered closed Beta testing. It is being developed by Bublar, which VRFocus  last reported on back in November when they launched AR social application Placie.

“We’ve created a new control experience unseen in any mobile game.” Says Bublar Game Studio Director Wictor Hattenbach. “Start your career at Franky’s authentic gym and experience the highs and lows of a boxing career. Play against your friends but choose wisely, since each opponent will differ, testing your skill and fitness levels.”

Bublar CEO Magnus Granqvist added, “With Glowing Gloves, we’re showing how Augmented Reality can create a brand new player-vs-player experience in mobile gaming. In this case, by placing your opponent right in front using real-time motion tracking.”

You can sign up for the closed Beta on the Glowing Gloves website, which confirms the developers have no planned release date as yet, with them currently keeping a ‘ready when it is ready’ mindset.  You can see a short preview trailer below. VRFocus will bring you more news about the development of the title as we get it.

Bublar Launch AR Social Mobile app Placie

Thanks to development software like ARKit and ARCore, augmented reality (AR) apps for mobile devices are springing up all over the place. The latest comes from Swedish software company Bublar, announcing the launch of Placie, a social mobile app.

Using Placie, users can take photos, decorate them with creative elements like stickers and text and instantly add them to a specific location, for anyone to discover through the world map. The app then combines AR and location-based technology allowing users to create and publish virtual objects and photos that appear in real world geographic locations.

“Placie connects people and places through shared experiences in a playful social environment,” said Wictor Hattenbach, Creative Director at Bublar in a statement. “Liking, commenting, sharing and following are all possible within Placie, but what sets the app apart is the ability to explore location-based images in real-time via the augmented reality mode. Plus, users can even earn rewards based on their usage.”

Free to download for iOS and Android devices, Placie has been built on Bublar’s proprietary software platform and represents the first phase for the company in augmenting the entire mobile experience. Bublar monetizes the app through optional in-app purchases. Users can buy coins to redeem for enhanced sticker packs etc. directly within the app or redeem the coins they’ve earned from their app activity.

“We predict an exciting evolution of applications based on Bublar’s proprietary software platform,” said Magnus Granqvist, Bublar’s CEO. “Our vision is to elevate the user experience for social apps by integrating augmented reality and geolocation. Our team is thrilled to lead the way forward and dedicated to expanding Placie while working on future applications for the platform.”

Placie is just one of a handful of mobile apps experimenting with AR for everyday use. AR Company Blippar recently unveiled AR City, an experimental app that can help users navigate bustling cities and find points or interest. Then there’s IKEA for example which has created an AR shopping app to help customers make more informed choices when selecting furniture.
