Watch New Blaston Gameplay, 1v1 VR Shooter From Resolution Games

Blaston is the latest VR title from Resolution Games, and we have some exclusive new gameplay hot off the press, as revealed in our UploadVR Showcase: Summer Edition.

Resolution Games is a studio that has been around the VR block a few times now — you might know them from one of their other titles such as Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, Acron: Attack of the Squirrels, relaxing fishing game Bait!, or their upcoming multiplayer game Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale.

However, this time Resolution Games is back with a very different style of game — Blaston is a 1v1 multiplayer shooter, where you’ll be given an array of weapons and have to dodge bullets from your opponent on the spot. As you might guess, the first person to lose all their health loses the round.

In some ways, the game looks a bit reminiscent of Ironlights, a recent 1v1 multiplayer melee combat game, or Wands, a wizard dueling game. However, Blaston swaps medieval weapons for various guns and doesn’t feature any of the same attack-defend back and forth you’ll see in Ironlights. From the gameplay trailer embedded above, it’s all quick moving, dodging and shooting action in Blaston. It’s doesn’t look like a game that you want to play in a small space, that’s for sure.

As mentioned above, Blaston isn’t even the only game we’re expecting from Resolution this year. Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale is a different type of multiplayer game from the same studio, also due out later in the year.

Blaston launches in the fall and will be available on almost any VR platform you could want it on — SteamVR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, and PSVR.

‘Blaston’ Unveils Slow-mo PvP Dueling Madness in New Gameplay Trailer

Resolution Games, the studio behind well-received VR titles like Angry Birds VR (2019)Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! (2019), and more, has shown off gameplay for its next VR title. Due out later this year, Blaston is a departure from the studio’s catalog of casual VR games, this time aiming for PvP shooter action.

Update (June 17th, 2020): Resolution Games has revealed a new trailer for Blaston, which includes a good look at its futuristic, slow-mo dueling action. The studio is still playing tightlipped on supported platforms, but we’re guessing at very least a Quest launch in addition to PC VR, and possibly PSVR as well.

The game is slated to release in Fall 2020, Resolution says. Check out the new gameplay trailer below:

Original Article (April 16th, 2020): Blaston is said to “pit players against each other in intense player vs. player duels that challenge them to stay in constant motion and blast their opponents with incredible precision using an assortment of high-tech, futuristic weaponry.” The studio released a teaser trailer today which shows players alternating between shooting and dodging.

The trailer and the studio’s description of the game suggest that Blaston will be limited to 1v1 combat, so we expect it’ll bring something rather different to the table than arena-type VR shooters like Dead and Buried II and Smashbox Arena.

Resolution Games has a history of developing casual and cooperative VR games, so a PVP dueling game is a bit of a shift for the studio. Granted, we’ve seen genre-pivots from VR studios like Cloudhead Games (Pistol Whip) and Schell Games (Until You Fall) which have resulted in new genre-defining games, showing that a studio’s VR development experience—at this stage in the industry anyway—tends to be more important than genre-specific experience.

Resolution Games hasn’t announced which headsets or platforms the game will launch on, though we’d suspect that Oculus Quest is a sure bet considering many of the studio’s other games have been available on Oculus’ standalone headsets. As for a release date for Blaston, the studio hasn’t given a specific date, but says the game will launch sometime this year.

Resolution Games’ Latest Title is Competitive PVP Dueler Blaston

Blaston

Resolution Games has quite the catalogue of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) titles including Angry Birds VR: Isle of PigsAcron: Attack of the Squirrels! and most recently Glimt: The Vanishing at the Grand Starlight HotelToday, the studio has announced its twelfth title in five years, a PvP experience which goes by the name Blaston.

Blaston image1A duelling shooter where each player has an assortment of high-tech, futuristic weaponry to use against their opponent,  Blaston has a similar vibe to E McNeill’s Ironlights, just with guns. Players will need to stay in constant motion to avoid being an easy target to hit, whilst also being able to return fire accurately.

While Resolution Games has created competitive titles like Acron in the past, Blaston will offer something new from the team, both in terms of gameplay and its bold visual style. From the trailer, matches will take place across rounds but there’s no indication if players have health or it’s one shot one kill.

“We really couldn’t be more excited about Blaston,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games. “It’s definitely a departure from the cooperative game play that Resolution Games has become known for and will introduce a whole new genre and audience of players to the studio.”

Blaston“We’ve been playing Blaston behind-the-scenes for quite some time, and Tommy still hasn’t managed to beat me,” joked Mathieu Castelli, Resolution Games’ chief creative officer and producer of Blaston. “It’s been a lot of fun. The offices have been filled with shouts of excitement during matches. There’s a real adrenaline rush that comes from the physical intensity!”

The Swedish developer expects to release Blaston by the end of the year but hasn’t yet specified which headsets the title will support. Given the nature of the gameplay and the studios’ previous work across multiple headsets, a big cross-platform launch is expected.

Recently the studio welcomed videogame veteran Mike Booth on to its board of directors and back in February teased another VR title, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, where players have to communicate and work together in a hectic kitchen environment. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Resolution Games’ latest projects, reporting back with further updates.

Resolution Games Teases Intense Dueling In Blaston, Planned For Late 2020

The studio behind a series of family-friendly VR games is developing a new title focused around “fiercely competitive” duels.

Resolution Games is teasing the first details for a game called Blaston that pits players against one another in duels that requires players “stay in constant motion and blast their opponents with incredible precision using an assortment of high-tech, futuristic weaponry.”

You can check out the teaser trailer here:

Resolution Games is the studio behind Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, Bait!, and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!. Blaston’s player versus player (PvP) action appears to be a bit of a change, then, from the studio’s previous titles.

“It’s definitely a departure from the cooperative game play that Resolution Games has become known for and will introduce a whole new genre and audience of players to the studio,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games, in a prepared statement.

The studio plans to launch Blaston before the end of 2020. While details are a little sparse right now, we’ll definitely bring you updates as we learn more about Blaston. Other games like Ironlights are showing some innovation in the PvP format for VR games with multiplayer supported across all platforms and features built to the strengths of current VR hardware. The teaser for Blaston looks to feature slow-motion gameplay and multiple guns — which brings to mind some of the features of Ironlights — but we’re obviously curious to learn more about where Resolution Games plans to take Blaston. We’ll bring you the latest as we learn more about the game.
