SDCC 2017: Piloting A Spinner In Blade Runner 2049’s Replicant Pursuit

SDCC 2017: Piloting A Spinner In Blade Runner 2049’s Replicant Pursuit

Gear VR owners only have to wait until tomorrow (July 21) to try the Replicant Pursuit tie in for the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 film, but we got an early sneak peak at Comic-Con in San Diego enhanced with D-BOX motion chairs.

It begins inside Gear VR in the cockpit of a spinner, also known as one of the flying cars from Blade Runner’s near future. You’re tasked with tracking down a replicant who is also in a spinner. The creators used the D-BOX chairs perfectly to enhance immersion and give the impression the vehicle was actually making its way around the city.

Movie tie-in projects for major films are sometimes flawed, with creators occasionally rushed to produce something that might ultimately release too close to the actual movie to have any effect on ticket sales. This project doesn’t suffer from those issues, with the film’s release coming in October there’s plenty of time for Replicant Pursuit to build some buzz for the movie.

“It was important to create something that wasn’t just an advertisement for the movie,” said Head of Experiences at Oculus, Colum Slevin. “We wanted to make something that could stand on its own narratively.”

I’m a big fan of the original Blade Runner film and right from the start I was taken by the use of sound to draw me into the world I’ve known from the original. The music sounded like a combination of old and new, with Vangelis’ original themes seemingly inspiring what I heard and causing a smile to grow on my face.

The pervasive holograms seen in the trailers for the film have a strong presence in the virtual world and left me with some lasting memories. You know that scene in Back To The Future 2 when Marty encounters the holographic Jaws? I don’t want to spoil it, but those kinds of invasive advertisements are pervasive through the world of Blade Runner 2049 and one particularly memorable section of Replicant Pursuit plays with this well.

The software includes light interactivity — encouraging the visitor to target other vehicles with your gaze and scan them for replicants, but they’ll also seem to auto-target if you don’t look at them. It isn’t much but it is enough to keep a visitor immersed in the virtual world through to its conclusion.

As soon as the headset comes off visitors were greeted by the actual spinner used in the film. A wall had lifted in the room where the D-BOX chairs and VR headsets were installed to reveal the vehicle on a street and bar populated by a collection of peacekeepers and “the ordinary masses who didn’t make it off world,” as a photo at the entrance to the overall experience suggested.

The virtual world was put together through a collaboration between the production company behind the movie (Alcon) as well as Facebook’s Oculus and developer Turtle Rock Studios. Replicant Pursuit is the first of three experiences promoting the film from different developers, with the last two debuting closer to October.

Enter The World of Blade Runner 2049 In VR During San Diego Comic Con

Enter The World of Blade Runner 2049 In VR During San Diego Comic Con

Immersive media and science fiction works are a perfect marriage, using cutting edge tech to show off amazing fictional worlds that feel like they may be just over the technological horizon. The sci-fi universe of Blade Runner stands as one of the most important in film history and, alongside being brought back to life with a sequel helmed by director Denis Villeneuve, fans will be able to experience the world themselves via an immersive event taking place in San Diego during Comic-Con weekend.

Revealed on BusinessWire and presented by Johnnie Walker, the Blade Runner 2049 Experience will spring up in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter and feature a gallery of art from the film, an Oculus-powered VR experience further immersing visitors into the world, and even neon-lit streets where they’ll be tested to see if they’re humans or replicants. The Spinner, the infamous car from the Blade Runner film, will also be on display.

The original Blade Runner, where assassins named Runners seek out and kill replicants, took place in a dark and decaying futuristic Los Angeles. The combination of the sequel taking place 30 years after the original film’s events, 35 years having actually passed since the original movie was made, and Denis Villeneuve crafting some of the most visually impressive films in recent years, the world of Blade Runner is going to be brought to life in an impressive way. Thus, this idea to welcome fans into a replication of Blade Runner’s LA is a great way to promote the series and show off virtual reality.

The Blade Runner Experience will be open to the public (no Comic-Con badge required) from July 20th – 23rd from 10 am – 7 pm Thursday – Friday, open an hour earlier on Saturday, and closing an hour earlier on Sunday. Blade Runner 2049 will debut in theaters on October 6th and features Harrison Ford in his original role, in addition to Robin Wright and Ryan Gosling.

Disney to Collaborate with Oculus in Series of VR Experiences, Also Bringing Blade Runner With It

There’s nothing more promising than seeing major corporations join in on the investment into virtual reality (VR), and that is exactly what Disney is doing directly with Oculus, it comes of the Oculus Connect 3 keynote with Yelena Rachitsky, Creative Producer at Oculus, today.

Rachitsky built up the announcement after talking about the successes of Oculus during the year, including Henry‘s Emmy award: “We’ve been seeing the creativity and the craft of VR continue to elevate, so we plan on investing more into these unique experiences and on making Oculus a premier destination for this type of content, and here are just some of the ways we plan on doing just that. We are incredibly pleased to announce collaboration with Walt Disney Studios, one of the most recognisable names in storytelling.”

Oculus will be working with Disney to create a series of VR experiences based on some of their most well-known characters, and it is planned to launch later this year – along with most of the reveals that have happened throughout the event. “Oculus technology, mixed in with the magic and creativity of Disney, is going to set a higher bar for VR.”

In addition to Disney’s involvement with Oculus, Blade Runner will also be added to the mix. “We’re going to be working with Alcon Interactive to bring VR experiences based on the Blade Runner sequel to the Oculus Platform ahead of the film’s release in 2017.”
