This ‘Fallout 4 VR’ Modpack Brings VR-native Overhaul to the Wasteland

There are a ton of Fallout 4 VR mods out there since it launched on the first generation of consumer VR headsets back in 2017, most of which you can find on NexusMods. If you’re looking for an all-in-one solution that makes the game less of a port and more of a native VR experience though, modder and streamer GingasVR just released a comprehensive modpack that is essentially a survivalist’s dream come true.

The modlist, aptly named ‘GingasVR’s Fallout VR Essentials Overhaul’, includes a bevy of optimizations that aim to fix some of the biggest gripes of Bethesda’s less-than-perfect VR port.

Not only does the modlist bring stability to a majority of the Commonwealth, which includes interior locations, but it also features things like a more intuitive Pip-Boy UI, smarter AI (including companions), and bunch of other things that make the Wasteland a more dangerous place. Bullets are actually rare, enemies are more crafty, and as GingasVR puts it: “you WILL die.”

One of the biggest limiters to everyone grabbing this modlist right now is that it requires not only the VR version of the game, but all official DLCs from the flatscreen version of Fallout 4 from Steam, all of which are included in the Fallout 4 Game of the Year Edition. You can grab that for under $15 if you’re looking in the right place at the right time (eg: Greenman Gaming, periodic sales on Steam, etc).

To GingasVR, the reason for requiring all DLC isn’t just about making a more visually pleasing experience, but rather making it a more immersive survival RPG experience by bringing a level of danger to the game which you might expect, well, when having to scrounge through a post-apocalyptic world filled with mutated malefactors.

This overhaul is NOT easy, this is meant to be an immersive survival rpg. You can customize things to your liking but the default is a game where there is NO Compass and NO HUD. VATS is turned into BULLET TIME (No auto targeting) The AI is also SMART and WILL USE TACTICS against you, Combat is FAST PACED and DANGEROUS there WILL be Random Ambushes! Radiation is actually deadly.

Provided you do have all DLC, you can get started by closely following GingasVR’s comprehensive guide on how to install the modlist using Wabbajack, an automated modlist downloader. Still, automated downloader or not, installing the modlist requires a fair bit of configuration before you can start stalking the Commonwealth, and an SSD with at least 85 GB to spare.

If that seems daunting, take a look at a list of improvements available in GingasVR’s modlist which ought to wash down the bitter pill of  having to mess with system settings:

  • Optimization and Stability in the majority of Commonwealth as well as interior locations.
  • DLC Fixes
  • Auto-Eating and drinking in Survival – 2D menus suck in VR (This mitigates the issue but food and drinks will NOT heal you)
  • Survival Manual Saves
  • Customizable HUD with as much or little HUD elements as you want
  • Survival Fast Travel from Settlements (Can also be customized to Fast travel from anywhere)
  • Hand Model and better VR Pip-Boy Interaction
  • Sim Settlements And Conqueror ( Complete Auto Build Settlements and ability to raid- CAN be customized or turned off)
  • BULLET TIME made SPECIFICALLY for the VR version of VATS
  • Edited and custom made perks So that Perception isn’t useless with bullet time and accuracy changes
  • Complete Accurate VR Weapons
  • Reduced loot to realistic levels for the setting (Finding bullets is actually a rare commodity now)
  • Smart AI (PANPC, Arbitration)
  • Smart Companions (Better Companions, More Smarter Companions)
  • Companion Whistle
  • Every NPC can be killed (Including Kids and Essential NPCS – Only Unlocked after going down the “Evil Path”)
  • Traveling NPCs
  • New Guns (Too many to list and all of them work – BE CAREFUL if trying to add other weapon mods)
  • New Quests and Locations ( Interesting NPCS, Stumble upon Interiors, Heather Casidian)
  • Easy hacking and Easy lockpicking
  • New weather from True Storms and Vivid Weather
  • New Optimized Textures
  • Darker Nights
  • Health changes, live dismemberment and non-bullet sponge enemies
  • New Radio Stations
  • New Music and no combat music
  • Better Blood
  • Stalkers that will periodically hunt you down and try to kill you (Can be customized or turned off- you can also run away and they’ll get bored of you)
  • Ability to increase carry weight with in-game progression
  • New Sound effects
  • VR Mirror to see yourself in 3rd person (Only possible with this list- Unavailable anywhere else)
  • And A lot more.

Doom 3: VR Edition Hits PlayStation VR in March

Doom 3: VR Edition

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) PlayStation VR Spotlight is returning today with a series of virtual reality (VR) announcements. The first of which has now dropped and its a big one, Doom 3: VR Edition by Bethesda Softworks is due to arrive by the end of the month.

Doom 3: VR Edition

In a PlayStation Blog post, Bethesda Softworks’ Parker Wilhem reveals that Doom 3: VR Edition: “features Doom 3 and its expansions, Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission, retooled for PS VR technology.” With new textures, shaders and sound effects, players will be able to use their PlayStation Aim controllers to take on the legions of hell for the first time.

There will be plenty of other VR enhancements to make Doom 3: VR Edition truly immersive, allowing you to carefully look around corners to shoot monsters, perfectly angling each shot whilst illuminating them with flashlight-mounted weapons. Players will have a 180-degree quick-turn function to cover their backs and a wrist-mounted display to track health, armour and ammo.

This is the first VR title Bethesda Softworks has released since its parent company Zenimax Media was bought by Microsoft in 2020. Positively showcasing that the company is still developing immersive content for various platforms.

Doom 3: VR Edition

This is the second official videogame from the Doom franchise to make it into VR, the first being Doom VFR which launched back in 2017. Unofficially, Oculus Quest owners can play the original PC edition of Doom 3 using Doom3Quest a VR mod created by Team Beef.

Doom 3: VR Edition will launch on 29th March 2021 for PlayStation VR on PlayStation 4, with PlayStation 5 offering backwards compatibility. For further updates from PlayStation Spotlight, keep reading VRFocus.

Inspired by ‘Half-Life: Alyx’, This ‘Skyrim VR’ Mod Fixes Poor Object Interaction & Looting

Love them or hate them for it, Bethesda’s games offer up a great opportunity for modders to get under the hood of impressively large-scale virtual worlds and summarily fix whatever messes the studio left behind. The same goes for Skyrim VR (2018), which for all its charms, is still obviously in need of tweaks to make it more like the VR-native game it should have been when it was first released on PC VR headsets in 2018. Now there’s a mod for that.

Created by NexusMods contributor ‘FlyingParticle’, the nifty mod fixes many of the non-VR design conventions that were essentially ported from the flatscreen version of Skyrim, namely the overreliance on text-based inventory menus and point-and-click object interaction system—both total immersion killers in their own right.

Called HIGGS VR (hand interaction and gravity gloves), the mod adds in some seriously useful abilities which were inspired by Half-Life: Alyx (2020). With it installed, both hands and objects have collision enabled so you can actually hold items.

Borrowing the gravity gloves mechanic from HLA, the mod also lets you highlight and select items from a distance and force-grab them to you. Combined with another mod, called VRIK Player Avatar, you can also add in dynamic handposes for more realistic object interaction.

Looting is a more natural experience too, as you can stash items by placing them in an over-the-shoulder inventory on your back. You can also move bodies, and strip them of armor by pulling on it, which are really nice touches for the sake of immersion.

HIGGS VR only works with PC VR versions of Skyrim VR. You can download it at Nexus Mods, which hosts a mind-boggling number of mods for many games, including many of the fan favorite mods for Skyrim VR.

id Software VR Title Appears in Australian Classification

Usually, big videogame developers try fairly hard to keep projects under wraps until they’re at a stage to fully roll out their marketing strategy. But occasions do occur where this can come undone by simple business requirements, job listings for example. Another looks to have come to light recently thanks to the Australian Classifications website detailing a virtual reality (VR) title by Doom developer id Software called Project 2021A.

As this is just a simple listings page there aren’t many details other than an
R 18+ rating because of its ‘high impact violence’. Another interesting detail to note is the ‘online interactivity’. Instantly, it’s easy to jump to several theories considering this is an id Software production published by Bethesda Softworks, the first being a new Doom.

Doom Eternal launched last year to great success across PC and console. Alongside its blistering campaign, there’s a multiplayer element as well, so it could well be possible that Project 2021A brings the franchise back into VR in some form. Let’s not forget that id Software dipped its toes into VR back in 2017 with Doom VFR and Bethesda has released several VR videogames as well.

Or then there’s the longshot which would probably make a lot of gamers happy, Quake. id Software’s online multiplayer is just as legendary as Doom, so it would be great to see this particular title get an immersive makeover. The only issue on that front would be whether the studio considers VR to have a big enough user base to warrant development.

The Project 2021A codename suggests development may still be in the early stages so VRFocus would expect to hear more concrete details regarding the project later in the year.

Back in September 2020, it was announced that Bethesda Softworks and its parent company Zenimax Media were being acquired by Microsoft, bringing them under the Xbox banner. They join the likes of inXile Entertainment which was acquired in 2018 and recently released online multiplayer Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds.

The possibility of a new Doom or Quake in VR is certainly exciting. As further details emerge, VRFocus will let you know.
