Oculus Rift+Touch Is Just $329 At Amazon & Best Buy Today

Oculus Rift+Touch Is Just $329 At Amazon & Best Buy Today

US retailers Amazon & Best Buy are offering $70 off the Oculus Rift+Touch package today, bringing the price down to $329. This represents a saving of 17.5%.

This is the best direct price we’ve ever seen for the Rift+Touch in the US. If you knew someone with an Oculus headset you could get the Rift+Touch package for $314.10 on Black Friday from Oculus.com, but if you didn’t the direct price was $349.

The offer doesn’t include the Marvel Powers United VR game which many other retailers are bundling, but that game is $39.99 so this is still the better deal.

The Oculus website has the Rift for $349, not as low as this. The deal appeared on Best Buy first as a daily deal and Amazon have seemingly price matched it. It’s possible that this will be the best deal this month, o if you’ve been wanting a Rift under your tree this Christmas this might just be the time to order it.

Oculus Rift Is Now $349 At Amazon & Best Buy For Black Friday

Oculus Rift Is Now $349 At Amazon & Best Buy For Black Friday

Amazon US and Best Buy USA are currently offering $50 off the Oculus Rift+Touch bundle, bringing the price from $399 to $349. The offer was part of Best Buy’s Black Friday lineup, but is available today. A few hours after the Best Buy deal went up, Amazon price matched it.

This is not the first time Amazon & Best Buy have offered this kind of sale. Last year, the retailers each offered the exact same deal at Black Friday, then again during the week before Christmas.

The package contains the headset, Touch controllers, 2 sensors, and relevant cables. It should be noted however that this does not contain Marvel Powers United VR, which is currently bundled with the Rift from many retailers (at $399). Since the game is worth $40, this deal still works out as better value, but only by $10. If you aren’t interested in that game though, you still save $50.

Samsung Gear VR Currently Available with Discount

The Samsung Gear VR has been the first taste of virtual reality (VR) for many people, owing to its easy portability and affordable price. The headset is currently even more affordable thanks to Samsung applying a hefty discount to the device.

Certain retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and Samsung themselves are offering the device for a discount on its usual retail price, with the deal available until 16th June.

New Samsung Gear VR and Controller

The usual retail price for the Samsung Gear VR is $129.99 (USD), which on Samsung’s own website has been discounted to $94.99, while Amazon has slashed the price down to a mere $89, making it a fairly attractive option for users who want to get started with VR. The discounted price is for the newer version of the Samsung Gear VR and includes the 3DoF controller.

Similar discounts have also appeared on Amazon UK’s site, with the usual RRP of £119 (GBP) being knocked down to £68.70. It is unknown what other European retailers are offering similar discounts at present.

The Samsung Gear VR has a large library of apps and videogames which are accessible through the Oculus Store. The device is compatible with several newer Samsung smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.

Users who already have an Oculus Rift will be able to create a profile and Avatar which will follow them between the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift

Oculus Venues menu

Of particular note for users who might be interested in acquiring a Samsung Gear VR is the newly launched Oculus Venues, which lets users watch live entertainment such as concerts and sporting events, sharing the experience with friends and family through the built-in chat functions.

Oculus Venues is just one of the social-oriented VR apps that users who purchase the device through the limited-time discount will be able to enjoy. For further news on offers and discounts on VR hardware and software, keep checking back with VRFocus.

Gear VR Offers To Get You Into Virtual Reality

As we enter the fourth quarter of 2017, we can look back on the year to date with something of a sense of ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’. Whilst many things have improved and virtual reality (VR) is beginning to hit its stride, with all the major players well into the lifespan of their first consumer released head mounted display (HMD), some questions still remain.

Questions that affect adoption—such as sickness and expense—and those that affect support—such as profitability, what roles will both augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) play in the future. One trend that has continued during 2017 is VR becoming cheaper and cheaper to get into. The availability of VR hardware for consumers has never been this easy. With HMD costs going down, the price for VR Ready PC’s going down and the system requirements red line going down on those PC’s too.

Whilst options exist on both console (PlayStation VR) and PC (Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, etc), for many the first port of call for experiencing VR remains smartphone-based VR HMDs, such as Google’s Daydream View, Samsung’s Gear VR and to a lesser extent over time the Google Cardboard. For those with the inclination to get into VR, there have been a number of deals and offers for Samsung’s long tenured Gear VR since launch and some even now that you should probably consider.

Here are just a few of the current active items:

Samsung (US)

We start in the US and with the creators themselves, who usually have a deal involving the Gear VR HMD. As Samsung in the US is not the same as, say, Samsung in China or Samsung in France, or even Samsung in Canada or Mexico, one part of the organisation often has different deals to the other (something we’ll look at further later). In the US however, Samsung currently has an offer revolving around the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+.

Revolving around trading in your old Samsung handset, doing so will knock off—depending upon the type of phone being traded—either $200 or $300 (USD) from the price of your new Galaxy. During the deal you can also acquire yourselves at Gear VR with Controller for a reduced price.

Available for “a limited time”, click here and then click ‘Get Started’ to work out a deal to suit you.

Best Buy (Canada)

Don’t be afraid to go the second-hand route if you have to—there are (of course) plenty of headsets about at various locations; but what you may find by way of price may be a little out of what your purse or wallet can handle. Best Buy have become an increasingly common sight on the VRFocus newsfeed and are usually involved with a number of deals, or events showcasing VR.

In this case, if you’re not fussy about items being ‘open box’ or the generation of headset, you can currently get a 2016 edition headset (aka the black one) via their online store for $79.99 (CAD) from their Geek Squad team, which would also nab you free shipping as it is over their $35 limit.

In the short term, however, if you were interested in getting the first generation of Gear VR (the standard white HMD) the ‘open box’ Geek Squad had been selling them on special offer for a mere $29.99 (CAD). These are, again, online only and have, following the weekend, sold out. However, the offer is on until October 12th 2017 and it is possible more headsets will come into stock.

Samsung Gear VR for Note 4BT Mobile (UK)

We’re back to Samsung again, this time in the UK and a good example of the ‘different territory, different deal’ situation mentioned when we were discussing the US deal. In this case there’s a duplicate of the BT Mobile deal in that you can claim a free Gear VR with Controller should you buy a Galaxy S8, S8+ or S8+ Dual Sim before November 2nd.

There are some degree of differences between the two deals, so be sure to read the terms and conditions of the deal, the network plans and double-check the prices against each other should you be interested in moving forward.

A Quick Note On Content

So there we go, deals in the US, UK and Canada for headsets old and new. You will though, of course, need VR content to go on your new HMD. For an idea of some recent deals you may want to consider, we’d recommend taking a look at our most recent addition of Something for the Weekend, which features some Gear VR titles. Additionally, there is another ‘deal’ of sorts in the form of Oculus’ automated refund policy, which means you can (as with Steam) change your mind about a purchase on the Oculus Store should you not like it.

According to Oculus: “You may return [Rift or Gear VR] apps, games and many experiences purchased through Oculus for any reason, as long as you submit your request within fourteen days of purchase and you have engaged with the content for no more than two hours.”

This is important to remember when you’re trying to find out what types of experiences you enjoy and do not enjoy in VR.

PlayStation VR In-Store Demo Program Returns To USA

For most electronics manufacturers the Christmas period is a significant one, so getting word of your product out is crucial. Sony have discovered that offering hands-on demonstrations is often an excellent way to raise awareness and get consumers excited. Hence, Sony is bringing back its PlayStation VR demo program.

With more than 100 titles available for the platform, holiday 2017 is looking like a good time to invest in a PlayStation VR. For those who want to try before they buy, over 200 locations across the US will be set up for demonstrations of some of the latest virtual reality (VR) experiences on the platform.

Various Best Buy and GameStop locations will be demonstrating titles such as Gran Turismo Sport, Final Fantasy XV: Monster of the Deep, SuperHot VR, Dino Frontier, Raw Data and Volton VR Chronicles.

PlayStation VR 2 headset

There are plans to add more videogame titles to the demonstrations as the year goes on, and the demonstrations are planned to last until the end of the year. The Canadian mall tour and in-store demonstrations that are already ongoing have also been extended to last until the end of the holiday season.

A full list of demo locations, dates and times can be found on the PlayStation website.

It has been a busy few days for Sony’s VR platform. VRFocus will continue to bring you the latest on the PlayStation VR.

More Places To Buy a HTC Vive And Accessories With Retail Expansion

Consumers wanting to get their hands on a HTC Vive in the USA will have more options on where to purchase it from in the coming weeks as Vive expands its retail reach by adding several big US retails to those stocking HTC Vive headsets.

HTC Vive headsets and related accessories will soon be available from stores such as BestBuy.Com, Walmart.Com, Jet.com and B and H. The list includes some of the biggest retailers in America, which may raise the profile of the HTC Vive among consumers considerably.

“These retailers mark a massive expansion of our online retail presence and are a testament to VR’s march toward the broader consumer market,” said Dan O’Brien, GM US, HTC Vive. “Interest in VR and Vive continues to grow. Paired with recent news with Apple, Google and Intel, we’re seeing major retailers and direct-to-consumer companies endorse Vive as the premier VR experience.”

HTC Vive CV1

As previously reported on VRFocus, all new purchases of the HTC Vive will come with a free copy of Ubisoft’s Star Trek: Bridge Crew, a title that puts players in the role of an officer aboard a Federation starship. The title has been reviewed by the VRFocus team and got high marks.

Star Trek has always pushed the boundaries of the imagination and the concept of virtual worlds,” said O’Brien, “Ubisoft and Red Storm have made a huge commitment to bring AAA gaming to virtual reality and the Vive. We couldn’t be more excited to bundle copies of Star Trek: Bridge Crew with Vive purchases to celebrate the launch.”

In addition to receiving Star Trek: Bridge Crew, new HTC Vive owners will also get several other virtual reality (VR) experiences, including Everest VR, Richie’s Plank Experience and a free month of subscription to the Viveport service.

VRFocus will continue to bring you news on the HTC Vive and other VR products.
