Life In 360°: A Bygone Celebration

So we’re here, 2018. To be honest this particular edition of Life In 360° is being written on December 29th so I have absolutely no idea as to what might have transpired between December 31st and January 1st. Perhaps the world has been conquered by aliens. Perhaps world peace was declared. Perhaps Garth Brooks was elected as the new Pope. Not a clue. There’s a very good chance most of us here are hungover and wouldn’t have any idea what was going on anyway.

Life In 360° / 360 Degree VideoWell, since we can’t exactly prepare in advance for something that hasn’t actually happened yet let’s take a look at the year that was shall we? More specifically let’s do a space time rewind to London and the striking of midnight LAST year and the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017.

Whilst there are a number of 360 degree videos of the chimes of Big Ben sounding and the London Eye – that’s the big ferris wheel they put up on the side of the Thames years back now for those not familiar – being lit up with fireworks galore. Feel free to look them up for a view from the crowd. The footage instead comes from Auntie herself, the British Broadcasting Corporation – the BBC. Who very kindly recorded (or at least BBC Taster did) the whole shebang from the sixty second countdown, to the ringing in of the new year and to the final whizzbang.

It’s a musical and visual extravaganza packed full of contemporary pop music and plenty of modern crowd pleasers. The BBC even provided a track list for the mashup/remix which is pretty good of them. Keep an ear out for:

  • Prince – 1999
  • Prince – Let’s Go Crazy
  • Prince – Alphabet St
  • Prince – Kiss
  • Sigala (feat. John Newman & Nile Rodgers) – Give Me Your Love
  • Walk the Moon – Shut Up and Dance
  • Buggles – Video Killed The Radio Star
  • Jimi Hendrix – Crosstown Traffic
  • Fatman Scoop (feat. DJ Kool) – It Takes Scoop
  • Orbital – Chime
  • Woodkid – Run Boy Run
  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Relax
  • Kungs vs. Cookin’ on 3 Burners – This Girl
  • TNGHT – Higher Ground
  • M Beat (feat. General Levy) – Incredible
  • Fatboy Slim and Riva Starr (feat. Beardyman) – Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat
  • Edmundo Ros & His Orchestra – London is the Place for Me
  • Coldplay – A Sky Full of Stars (Hardwell Remix)
  • David Bowie – Fame
  • David Bowie – Space Oddity
  • David Bowie – Suffragette City
  • David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust
  • Chromeo – Jealous (Dillon Francis Remix)
  • Swedish House Mafia (feat. John Martin) – Don’t You Worry Child

As usual, just because there’s a major holiday going on that doesn’t mean there’s not going to be things happening throughout the day on VRFocus so please do keep a look out for those. Li360 will be back tomorrow for the last video in our slightly later festive timeslot.

BBC Taster VR App to Feature Content From BBC Three and Planet Earth II

The BBC has been a strong supporter of virtual reality (VR) for sometime now, having created project like The Turning Forest for Samsung Gear VR and BBC Earth partnering with Oculus on several experiences. Today BBC Taster, which deals with early and experimental ideas, has announced the BBC Taster VR App featuring content from BBC Three and Planet Earth II.

Developed using technology from EEVO to help BBC teams publish experimental mobile VR experiences, BBC Taster VR will feature a range of content such as animated VR, interactive 360° videos, dynamic binaural audio and branching narratives.

The first experiences to launch with the app include a trailer for upcoming BBC Three feature-length documentary One Deadly Weekend in America, new interactive 360-degree content from Planet Earth II, enabling viewers to choose their path through the story.

Andy Conroy, Controller of BBC Research and Development, said in a statement: “BBC Taster VR will be a fantastic showcase for some brilliant new commissions, as well as some new takes on some of the best BBC Taster VR experiences to date. It gives audiences cutting-edge mobile VR experiences from the BBC and, crucially, gives our editorial and technical teams even greater insight.”

Available for free on both Android and iOS platforms, the app will be regularly updated with new VR experiences over the coming weeks and months.

“Since moving online, BBC Three has already delivered best in class storytelling, great curation, content which reflects the diversity of the UK, and now it’s time for us to innovate even more. My new role as editorial lead for BBC Taster will help use new technologies to explore a new ways to tell stories that will engage our audience, said Damian Kavanagh, Controller, BBC Three. “This new VR trailer is a fantastic first step. Using virtual reality it literally puts the audience in the shoes of the victims of gun crime featured in our truly brilliant feature-length documentary, One Deadly Weekend in America. It’s the first time the BBC has ever used VR in this way, and offers a whole new way to engage an audience.”

As the BBC continues its development of VR, VRFocus will bring you the latest updates.

Life In 360°: A Taste Of Things To Come From The BBC?

You may remember some time back that VRFocus experimented with a new type of discussion show in which Kevin J and Jamie interviewed a guest. The whole thing being filmed with a 360 degree camera. What would end up being called VRCast was, in effect, a 360 degree round table discussion. There are no plans for that to return at this time, however the BBC has evolved the idea of a 360 degree round table into a new project from BBC Taster.

No Small Talk 360°

BBC Taster is, as may be suggested from the name, a relatively recent addition to the corporation’s line-up where it openly experiments with different programmes and different ways to produce content. It then sees what resonates with the audience and that which has potential, and uses that to decide whether or not to green light future episodes.

The latest addition to BBC Taster is No Small Talk 360°, a pilot for a potential series. Aimed at and starring millennial women, in episode one we sit in on a discussion between Cherry Healey and Emma Gannon as the shoot the breeze over about modern life and what’s going on in the world.

Speaking to the BBC website, Executive Producer Catherine Allen explained some of the difficulties in bringing No Small Talk 360° to life.

“Our main challenges lay in trying to make the most of the authentic, rawness of the 360° video medium. Luckily, producer Dorothea and the VR City team have lots of experience in addressing this challenge. Our director, Darren Emmerson did an amazing job here at capturing the spontaneous, fluid nature of conversation, in a way that felt akin to being there. However, the experience could only be ten minutes long; a length much shorter than most deep, exploratory discussions. We solved this through a simple, chaptered editing style. This made it obvious to the audience, that we had chosen a select few exciting chunks, of something that took much longer in real life.”

The programme is available in two sizes and is recommended to be viewed on a Samsung Gear VR. However, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive owners can view it too. More information and links to download the show can be found on the BBC Taster website.

VRFocus will be back on Monday with more Life In 360°.
