Future of Valve VR, Next Gen HP Headset & Huge New Releases! – VRecap

Welcome to another swift roundup of the week’s top VR stories, releases and more! You can probably already guess the direction this episode is going to take, but we’ve got more than just Half-Life: Alyx to talk about.

First, not only did Half-Life: Alyx release, but we got the low-down on the future of VR at Valve. Jamie spoke to Greg Coomer from Valve and questioned whether or not Gabe Newell’s claims of Valve having three VR titles in development from 2017 were still true. Spoiler: they’re not. Well, not for now, anyway.

Alongside all the Alyx excitement, HP decided to drop pretty big news at the same time Valve’s title released – there’s another HP Reverb coming and it’s going to have next gen specs! What are those specs, you ask? Well… We don’t know yet, but they shared this pretty cool teaser trailer! Read more from our hardware expert, Heaney, who can fill in more gaps.

The number of releases this week has been unprecedented – yes, other VR games exist this week (and some are pretty darn good, too!). Time for a roll call! We’ve got: Paper Beast, The Room VR: A Dark Matter, Down The Rabbit Hole, Tilt Brush on PSVR, A-Tech Cybernetic VR also on PSVR, and B-Team on Quest.

We don’t have a giveaway for you this week, but make sure to tune in next Friday to see what’s up for grabs.

As for other news this week, here are other stories which didn’t quite make it into the VRecap:

B-Team Is Coming To Oculus Quest Later This Month

Developer Twisted Pixel’s next Oculus Quest game isn’t a port of Wilson’s Heart or Defector, but instead an update to its Oculus Go launch title, B-Team.

B-Team is essentially a minigame compilation starring a bunch of clumsy soldiers. The game cycles between a handful of different experiences which include a running game where you avoid obstacles and a wave shooter. Check out the trailer for the Quest version below.

We played the Go version of B-Team a few years back. It’s a pretty simple experience, not too dissimilar to Armature’s Fail Factory. It definitely isn’t the deep single-player action game some Quest fans will be looking for, but it’s easy to jump into and might be good for quickly showing friends and family. The Quest version will, of course, come with enhanced six degrees of freedom (6DOF) controls.

This isn’t Twisted Pixel’s first Quest project; the developer surprise-launched a VR beat ’em up called Path of the Warrior late last year. The team is also behind two of the bigger exclusives on Oculus Rift: Wilson’s Heart and Defector. The former is an atmospheric, noir-style adventure game and one of the first to fully utilize the Oculus Touch controllers. Defector, meanwhile, is a Mission: Impossible-like spy thriller. We’ve got our fingers crossed that both games make it to Quest eventually.

Will you be picking up B-Team on Quest? Or do some of today’s other announcements from the Facebook Game Developers Showcase have you more interested? Let us know in the comments below!

Twisted Pixel Games’ B-Team Hits Oculus Quest This Month

Twisted Pixel Games and Oculus Studios have worked on a number of videogames over the years such as Wilson’s Heart and DefectorIn 2018 the studio released an on-rails shooter for Oculus Go and Gear VR called B-Team which has now been confirmed to be coming to Oculus Quest next week.

B-TEAM

Offering over the top action and cheesy acting reminiscent of80s b-movies, Twisted Pixel Games’ B-Team puts you in the midst of an alien invasion where the world’s elite forces have been demolished so now it’s up to you and your squad.

The original B-Team only had 3DoF controls to work with, so segments were split between on-rails levels where you dodge left and right as well as stationary areas for wave shooting. That basic premise remains but the studio does look to have catered for Oculus Quest’s 6DoF controllers for a more immersive gameplay experience. It’s not purely shooting and running either, as there are puzzles to solve to get that grey matter working.

You’ll be able to choose from one of four characters, each offering their own special powers and weapons which can help on specific areas. To ensure the gameplay doesn’t get stagnant B-Team has randomized levels and waves of enemies.

B-TEAMB-Team also features special guest appearances by Michael Dudikoff (American Ninja, Platoon Leader), Eric Roberts (Best of the Best, The Dark Knight), Cynthia Rothrock (China O’Brien, Martial Law), Don “The Dragon” Wilson (Bloodfist, Batman Forever), and Fred “The Hammer” Williamson (From Dusk Till Dawn, M*A*S*H).

With B-Team slated for release on 26th March Oculus Quest owners are going to have a few titles to choose from, with Fireproof Games’ The Room VR: A Dark Matter and Down The Rabbit Hole by Cortopia Studios arriving that same day. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Twisted Pixel Games and the Facebook Game Developers Showcase, reporting back with the latest updates.
