‘Attack on Titan VR’ Releases in Early Access July 23rd, and It Looks… Rough

Japanese studio UNIVRS announced Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable in late 2022, making for the hit anime’s first official VR game. Now the studio says it’s releasing the game in early access on Quest next month, giving us our first look at gameplay. And it looks pretty rough.

The studio today announced that Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable is releasing on Quest in early access on July 23rd, priced at just $5.

While it’s difficult to argue with such an honest price tag, the new gameplay video is a pretty stark departure from the concept trailer released in June 2023, which admittedly features pre-rendered animations.

Of course, we’ll be reserving judgement until we actually get a chance to go hands-on with the game, although it’s undoubtedly not the strongest start.

As the first official Attack on Titan VR game, Unbreakable lets players enter the world of the hit anime to become a member of the Scout Regiment and fight against the Titans for the survival of mankind. That means plenty of swinging through the city with your omni-directional mobility gear, and bringing down hulking Titans with your trusty blades.

The early access version is set to include the first two chapters of the game, each offering 2-3 hours of action, the studio says. It’s also set offer both single and two-player co-op, however the studio notes co-op mode will be under development until the full 1.0 release, which is slated to arrive in Late 2024.

In the meantime, you can wishlist Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable, which supports Quest 2/3/Pro.

‘Attack on Titan VR’ Coming to Quest This Winter, New Trailer Here

Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable was first announced by Japan-based studio UNIVRS late last year, promising to bring the anime’s high-flying action to VR for the first time. It’s coming a little later than advertised, as the game was originally slated to arrive on Quest in Summer 2023; at today’s Quest Gaming Showcase the studio says it’s now targeting a Winter 2023 release.

As recompense, the studio showed off a pretty slick trailer which includes pre-rendered animations, but no actual gameplay.

Still, much of the rope-swinging action seen in the video, courtesy of the franchise’s iconic omni-directional mobility gear, is undoubtedly doable from a VR locomotion standpoint considering we’ve seen the same movement scheme across a number of VR games, such as Windlands, Yupitergrad, and Jet Island to name a few. It’s possible much of the action seen here could translate directly to gameplay, save a bunch of the smooth lighting effects.

UNIVRS says Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable is set to feature both single player and co-op modes, and will be available in both Japanese and English, dubbed and subbed.

Here’s how the studio describes the action:

In Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable, players are tasked with taking on unique missions as members of the Scout Regiment. They will need to combine entirely free three-dimensional movement through use of their Omni-directional Mobility (ODM) Gear with cross-range combat in order to defend themselves against killer titans. As players progress, the battle difficulty will increase, so only those with determination and skills critical to making it through to the final battle will survive.

Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable is coming to Quest 2 and Quest Pro. It’s uncertain whether it’s also targeting other headsets at this time, such as PSVR 2 or SteamVR headsets.

VR headsets let us step into some of our most favorite and iconic fictional worlds. I can stand at the edge of High Hrothgar, peering down at the rolling landscapes of Skyrim or fight off demons in DOOM VFR. Then if you venture over to Japan you can pilot a Gundam or in the VR Zone at Shinjuku try your hand at DBZ VR, Dragon Quest VR, Mario Kart VR, and more. You can even gun down stormtroopers with Secrets of the Empire from The Void. Then why not more anime VR experiences? If it works for DBZ, surely it can work for others. We’re still a ways off from a real Sword Art Online VR MMO (Nostos is making some steps in the right direction) but until then the likes of Attack on Titan VR will certainly hold us over.

According to Siliconera, Sony Music Communications and Taito are collaborating on a VR attraction centered around the massively popular Attack on Titan anime series titled VR Attack on Titan: The Human Race. The experience will support up to four players as they battle against the Female Titan and is based on a chapter from the original manga.

As you can see in the image above, the rigs are setup side-by-side with fans and it looks a lot like Vive Pros dangling there at each station. Attack on Titan VR is getting a location test in Tokyo at Ginza Sony Park from October 19th – 26th, running 10AM – 8PM JST.

Does this look like something you’d want to try? With Mario Kart VR available in London already and coming to the US very soon, maybe more location-based VR experiences from Japan will start making their way to the West over too.

Let us know what you think down in the comments below!

Attack On Titan Gets VR Attraction

Attack On Titan is one of the biggest successes in Anime in recent years, attracting large audiences all over the world, as it depicts a world where humankind is forced to live in cities protected by huge walls to protect them from the huge man-eating humanoid creatures known as titans. Now the bleak and brutal world of Attack On Titan is coming to virtual reality (VR).

Sony Music Communications and Taito are working on a VR attractions called VR Attack on Titan: The Human Race that will let up to four players take the roles of Squad Levi against the Female Titan.

It is based on a chapter of the original manga called ‘Female Titan Capture Operation’, which features Levi, Eren and other major characters riding on horseback as they attempt to make an escape by dodging various obstacles.

The mission is considered to be complete once a certain number of players reach the goal, which involves players avoiding not only obstacles but also the attacks of the Female Titan, who will kill your character if you get caught.

The Attack on Titan manga was first published in Bessatu Shonen Magazine in September 2009, subsequently adapted into an Anime series in April 2013. The story initially centered on Eren Yeager and his childhood friends as they join the military to fight the titans after their hometown is invaded.

Attack on Titan in both manga and anime form has been noted for the emotional impact is has had on its fans, and its very dark storylines, with some people coming to refer to it as ‘The Games of Thrones of Anime’.

VR Attack on Titan: The Human Race will be getting a location test in Tokyo from 19th-26th October at 10am-8pm JST at Ginza Sony Park. Those who participate in the location test will be given exclusive stickers.
