Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs Level Builder Launches Today

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is receiving a free update today which adds a level builder allowing you to create and play your own Angry Birds VR levels.

Describing the new mode, Resolution Games noted players will be able to use several blocks from the original game, including wood, ice, rock, TNT, fans, boulders and decorations blocks. You’ll be able set which birds the player can slingshot at structures, teleportation points around the structure, and, of course, place pigs on the structure to be taken down (including boss pigs from the main game).

As we noted when the level builder was announced, this tool seems like a natural post-launch step for Angry Birds’ first venture into VR, and will hopefully keep the game fresh for those whole played through all the included levels in the main game. Importantly, however, the level builder that launches today only includes local capabilities.

This means you’ll only be able to create and play levels on your own device, and can’t share levels online – for now. Resolution Games previously confirmed they are “aiming to launch an online version that will allow players to share their levels with the greater Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs community and even compete for most difficult, highest scoring, most creative and any number of variations.”

Until then, you’ll just have to make the levels on your own device and pass the headset around to friends to try out.

The free level builder update for Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs launches today on all supported platforms, including PC VR, Oculus Quest and PSVR.

Get Creative in Angry Birds VR With the new Level Builder

When Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs arrived earlier this year Resolution Games and Rovio Entertainment proved that the addictive mobile gameplay could easily translate into virtual reality (VR). Yet it didn’t feel quite as endless as its phone-based cousin. That’s going to change today as a free update adds the much-anticipated Level Builder feature.

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

The level builder is unique to the VR experience as no previous Angry Birds videogame has featured the option. Using a spinnable circular table, players can use wood/ice/rock blocks to create all sorts of structures alongside various TNTs, fans, boulders, decoration blocks and more.

As well as the building materials, different pigs seen in the main levels can be placed inside/around each structure such as boss pigs.  Players can also select which birds are available to slingshot at the structures and which teleportation points are available during construction. All levels are saved locally, appearing in their own custom level set to share with friends. Sharing online is slated to arrive next year.

“I think most of us have played a game and thought of something to push the creative envelope, like ‘I wish I could have an entire level of TNT!’,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games in a statement. “By launching our new level builder tool in Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, fans now have the power of creation right at their fingertips. And, it’s just as intuitive and fun as building with blocks in your physical environment.”

“At a time when we’re celebrating 10 years since the release of the first Angry Birds mobile game, it’s awesome that fans can now create their own levels in VR,” said Sami Ronkainen, creative director of extended reality at Rovio Entertainment. “Over the years we’ve received a lot of fan requests for such a feature and look forward to seeing what cool creations they now create!”

VRFocus gave the original videogame a decent four-star review, saying: “Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is Angry Birds just in VR, and that’s no bad thing, equally fun and frustrating as it ever was.”

Take a look at VRFocusgameplay video for the level builder below and as further updates from Resolution Games regarding Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs are released we’ll let you know.

‘Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs’ to Get ‘Super Mario Maker’ Style Level Builder Soon

Resolution Games released Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs (2019) earlier this year on every major VR platform, bringing the iconic mobile puzzler into the third dimension to pretty awesome effect. Now, the studio announced that there’s a custom level builder in the works that should arrive soon.

Resolution Games says the level builder for Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is slated to arrive soon, targeting release during Holiday Season 2019.

By the looks of the trailer (linked below), you’ll have access to a number of basic pieces as well as the full cast of baddies to knock over, and a custom lineup of bird-pals to fling out of your trusty sling shot.

The level builder is said to launch as a local-only sandbox, however the studio is slated to release online functionality in 2020 which will let you share your levels with the community and compete for most difficult, highest scoring, most creative and “any number of variations,” the studio says in a Steam news update.

We were pretty impressed with Angry Birds VR when it initially launched on PC VR headsets back in February, giving it a commendable [8.5/10] in our review for its intuitive shooting mechanic, awesome graphics, and well-crafted 3D puzzles.

It’s since come to PSVR and Quest too. You’ll find Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs on Steam (Vive, Rift, Windows VR), Viveport (Vive, Rift, Windows VR), Oculus Store (Rift, Quest), and the PlayStation Store (PSVR).

Angry Birds VR: Isle Of Pigs To Receive Level Builder Later This Year

Angry Bird VR: Isle of Pigs is getting a level builder later this year, which will let you create your own structures, place enemy pigs, and pick which birds to feature in your own levels.

The mobile game was adapted for VR earlier this year, and while it features most of the same basic mechanics as the original 2D games, the 3D capabilities add a few interesting new ways to play. As David noted in his hands-on back in February, the 3D VR environment means that, “You’re no longer restricted to firing birds from a single point and can teleport to different locations around the level. You’re required to lean around, duck down, and peer over objects to find explosive boxes, hidden pigs, and other secrets.”

A level builder seems like a natural expansion for the game post-launch – not only will it provide some new things to try out for players who have 3-starred all of the games’ included levels, but it also ensures that the game can hopefully live on for years to come with community-created levels.

Initially, the builder will launch as a local experience – your levels will only be available to play on the device they were created on. However, Resolution Games confirmed that in 2020 they’re “aiming to launch an online version that will allow players to share their levels with the greater Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs community and even compete for most difficult, highest scoring, most creative and any number of variations.”

The announcement trailer embedded above gives you a good idea on how you use the builder in-game, which works about how you would expect it to. You only need to look at games like Super Mario Maker to know that a level builder is a huge addition to the game – hopefully the Angry Birds VR builder is deep enough to create challenging levels and keep players coming back for more.

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is available on PC VR headsets, PSVR, and the Oculus Quest.

Build Your Own Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs Levels in Next Update

Fans of Angry Birds have been inundated with new content during 2019, a new film arrived this summer, an augmented reality (AR) videogame has come to both iOS and Android, and of course, there’s Resolution Games’ Angry Birds VR: Isle of PigsAfter receiving a ‘Spooky Update‘ in September the studio has revealed one more for this year and it’s a biggie, a Level Builder.

Angry Birds VR: Level Builder

That’s right, you’ll soon be able to create your own pig fortress to challenge other players to destroy. Offering players a  sandbox level-building environment they’ll have all the tools and building equipment required to build a devilishly difficult level, from stone or wood, with strategically placed TNT boxes and of course plenty of green pigs to place.

“We have been working on this level builder technology for some time and are very excited to have it make its debut in Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs,” said Tommy Palm, CEO and co-founder of Resolution Games in a statement. “With our upcoming release, players will have the power to show their creativity in ways we could never imagine. We can’t wait to see what the fans come up with!”

The initial release of the level builder this year will only allow for local gameplay, so players can share with friends and family. Resolution Games is planning an online version for 2020, so players can share their creations with the community, with designs competing for most difficult, highest scoring, most creative and more. “For now, we’re eager to get a local version out so fans can start tinkering with the level builder and have endless fun with their creations,” added Palm.

The teaser trailer below details a little of what you can expect to find in the update. Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs supports most of the major VR headsets including PlayStation VR, Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality.

No specific date has been given for the Level Builder update, just ‘this holiday season’ so there shouldn’t be too long to wait. VRFocus will continue its coverage of the videogame and Resolution Games, reporting back with further announcements.

Here’s Every Oculus Go App You Can Upgrade To Oculus Quest For Free

But did you know you can upgrade Oculus Go games to Quest versions right now?

Pretty soon, you’ll be able to download some of your favorite Oculus Go games on Oculus Quest. But Facebook also just kicked off a limited upgrade scheme for its mobile VR headsets this week. From now until December 31st 2019 you can upgrade select apps you bought on Go/Gear VR before September 25th, 2019. Any game you’ve bought after September 25th won’t be able to upgrade; you’ll need to buy the Quest version directly. If you’re getting an Oculus Quest for Christmas, make sure to jump on the upgrade scheme before it runs out.

The full list of 21 apps is below. It contains some of the best apps on both Go and Quest like Thumper, Virtual Virtual Reality and Virtual Desktop. Upgrading from Go to Quest means these apps will fully support six degrees of freedom (6DOF) positional tracking with Quest’s two hand controllers. You’ll probably notice a bit more visual polish in a few of the apps, too.

This is essentially a watered-down version of the cross-buy support between Quest and Rift. Pretty soon you’ll also be able to plug your Quest into a PC to play Rift content too via Oculus Link. Facebook’s standalone really is taking the center stage between all of the company’s VR offerings.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a full list of Go games and apps you can actually download on Quest, that’s here.

Resolution Games Adds 13 new Spooky Levels to Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

The Angry Birds franchise has had quite the resurgence in 2019, with a new movie and plenty of new videogames. One of the earliest was Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs by Resolution Games and Rovio Entertainment which launched in February. Today, the studios have released another update for the virtual reality (VR) title, adding 13 more levels.

Angry Birds VR

Back in March, 13 spooky levels were added to the videogame introducing a new boss pig, Dr. Frankenswine in the process. It’s this section which has been expanded, doubling the roster to 26 in total. These never-before-released levels, titled “Creepy Climb”, take knocking out Dr. Frankenswine and his crew of swine to a whole new level of difficulty. They also feature the Alchemy Bomb as well as lightning and rain to enhance the experience.

The new levels are free, supporting Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, PlayStation VR, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Additionally, the update now allows Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR owners to play the original 13 spooky levels called “Maliboo Beach”.

“When the game initially launched earlier this year, we focused on delivering the best possible VR game that would do Angry Birds the justice the franchise deserves,” said Tommy Palm, CEO and co-founder of Resolution Games in a statement. “And now, we’re happy to share the latest update that takes fans through even more levels in the game’s Spooky Mode.”

Angry Birds VR

There are now 78 levels to play through on Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs which VRFocus awarded a four-star review, saying: “Rovio Entertainment and Resolution Games have certainly played it safe with Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs. While there aren’t really any major surprises when it comes to content and gameplay the adaption to VR has worked superbly well, with the studios retaining the high production values they’re known for.”

While Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs offers a traditional gameplay approach in VR, for PlayStation VR owners there’s always  The Angry Birds Movie 2: VR Under Pressure. This is a local multiplayer experience using the PlayStation social screen feature, with one person in VR while everyone else plays on the TV. VRFocus will continue its coverage of Angry Birds, reporting back with the latest immersive titles.

5 New Games Added to Oculus Quest’s Launch Lineup, Including Thumper

The Oculus Quest launch lineup countdown continues with five new titles confirmed for a day one release – a date which is still currently unknown – offering both intense action and tranquil gaming pleasure.

Oculus Quest - Front

The big news is that Drool’s fast-paced rhythm action title Thumper is coming to the headset. Thumper is a little unusual in the genre as you control a beetle hurtling down a cosmic track bombarded by musical obstacles that can be overcome with rhythm-obeying commands. Players can glide around corners and bash into the sides to stay alive, trying to survive until the end, which also includes mini-bosses to deal with.

“When we first starting prototyping Thumper way back in 2009, gaming VR was just a sci-fi fantasy,” explains Drool designer Marc Flury on the Oculus Blog. “We didn’t realize our psychedelic space beetle experience would feel so perfect in VR. With a fully standalone device like Oculus Quest, the dream feels complete. Now anyone can experience  Thumper in VR with no fuss and no compromise.”

The reason Thumper was the big news is that the other four videogames: Rush, Fruit Ninja, Bait! and Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigswere previously mentioned when Oculus released its first countdown trailer at the end of March. There was a flurry of images displayed at the end which include the aforementioned titles. Now at least they have been officially confirmed as launch day experiences.

Angry Birds VR

Each is a big videogame in its own right, with Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and Bait! both by Resolution Games. Bait! was one of the studios’ earliest titles and a big success, allowing players to catch fish in tranquil surroundings. Angry Birds VR is its most release, launch ed back in February in collaboration with Rovio Entertainment.

Rush and Fruit Ninja are two smaller titles but still offer their own unique gameplay experiences. The latter is a great pick up and play videogame, especially suitable for new VR players. While the former is a bit more extreme, wingsuit flying through canyons and sheer drops as you race towards the finish line.

As Oculus reveals new videogames coming to Quest, VRFocus will let you know.

The Angry Birds are Going Mental With New VR Content and AR Game

Rovio Entertainment’s Angry Birds franchise dipped its toes into the immersive waters of mixed reality (MR) last year with a Magic Leap version, followed by a virtual reality (VR) edition in February. This is all thanks to a collaboration with Resolution Games and it looks like the pair aren’t stopping there, expanding the VR version in terms of content and support, as well as announcing an augmented reality (AR) videogame for mobile.

Angry Birds VR

On the Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs the title is now arriving on Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets today, with a PlayStation VR version landing next Tuesday, 26th March. Additionally, the videogame will be getting 13 new levels in a spooky update.

Fans will now have to battle a new boss pig, Dr. Frankenswine, who takes over the entire island, steals the eggs and turns it into a petrifying paradise. Set on Maliboo Beach, players will find new gameplay elements, including the Alchemy Bomb, and the tricksy cube that transforms other blocks when it explodes.

“The response to the game so far has been very motivating. We’ve been eager to get the game live on more platforms and are ready for more players to try their hand at the virtual slingshot,” said Tommy Palm, Resolution Games co-founder and CEO in a statement. “We’ve also been listening to community feedback and are excited to get the new content out, which will add new challenges for those star-seeking players.”

Angry Birds AR Rocky Ruins Level

And then there is the Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs which is coming to iOS devices. Using Apple’s ARKit technology players will now be able to view the videogame in a whole new way, able to overlay the 3D buildings into the real world, helping get that perfect shot and angle.

“We’re delighted to bring the beloved physics-based gameplay of Angry Birds to life through augmented reality,” said Kati Levoranta, CEO at Rovio Entertainment. “It’s an especially timely moment to bring our avian friends to mobile AR for the first time, as this year marks the tenth anniversary since the release of the first Angry Birds game.”

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is available now for $14.99 USD/ £11.39 GBP on Steam for Windows Mixed Reality headsets as well as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs is available for pre-order today on the App Store, with the global release due to happen in Spring 2019 featuring at least 40 levels. Angry Birds VR Dev Resolution Games Confirms Work on Several Oculus Quest Titles

The next couple of months should be fairly exciting for virtual reality (VR) fans, with the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2019 only a few weeks away, and then F8 2019 the month after with possible Oculus Quest launch details. Resolution Games has been involved in both the VR and augmented reality (AR) industries for some time now, having seen great success with fishing title Bait! It’s most recent videogame was Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs in collaboration with Rovio Entertainment. Now the studio has revealed a few new plans.

bait vr screenshot2

Resolution Games will be attending GDC 2019 to announce information regarding several new titles the studio is working on for Oculus Quest. It’s not discussing any further details at this time but the likelihood of a few ports is definitely high.

Titles such as Moss, Robo Recall and The Climb have already been confirmed for the launch of the standalone headset, and Bait! for example, would make for an excellent Oculus Quest experience, being able to fish wherever you chose. Having originally debuted on Samsung Gear VR before coming to Oculus Rift why should Oculus Quest miss out.

And the same goes for Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs. It’s not too graphically intensive, plus the new 6DoF controllers are perfectly suited to flinging all those birds at those unsuspecting green pigs. VRFocus would certainly like to see that happen, giving the videogame a solid 4-star review, saying: “While there aren’t really any major surprises when it comes to content and gameplay the adaption to VR has worked superbly well, with the studios retaining the high production values they’re known for. Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is Angry Birds just in VR, and that’s no bad thing, equally fun and frustrating as it ever was.”

Angry Birds VR

GDC 2019 should be a big event for Oculus Quest as it’s most likely the last one before the standalone headset launches. A new title from Face Your Fears developer Turtle Rock Studios will be on display, and hopefully so will Sanzaru Games’ latest Asgard’s Wrath. VRFocus will be at GDC 2019 to bring you all the latest news and announcements.
