Resolution Games Casual Titles See 500% Boost From Quest 2 Launch

Following the launch of the Oculus Quest 2 late last year VR developer Resolution Games saw a 500% boost in downloads for their titles, including Angry Birds VR, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, Acron, Bait!, and Blaston.

The news was announced today following a slew of milestone announcements from Facebook regarding their standalone VR headset. In addition to over 60 different Quest apps surpassing the $1 million mark, Beat Saber has now sold over 4 million copies across all platforms and Facebook is rolling out the long-awaited non-store distribution format dubbed App Lab. This is supposedly going to make it easier to get content released on Quest, even if it’s unfinished or in Early Access.

Resolution Game Sales After Quest 2

In the chart above, Resolution Games is demonstrating the massive influx in sales relative to how sales have been going the last few years. The vertical axis of the chart is blank so we don’t know how much these games are making, but it still shows a clear and enormous influx of new sales for all of their games.  And in the case of Bait!, a free-to-download fishing game with microtransactions, Resolution Games says it has been downloaded 4 million times across all platforms now.

Since most of the titles in Resolution Games’ catalogue aren’t newly released the biggest takeaway from a chart like this is simply that a lot of people bought the Oculus Quest 2.

Granted, we knew that already, but seeing it reflect in direct sales and increased revenue for developers is extremely important for the growth of the medium as a whole. Many other developers also saw similar boosts at Quest 2 launch.

“At Resolution Games, we are seeing our titles reach significant revenue milestones more quickly than ever before, and I can confidently say that current headsets are contributing to it,” says Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games. “The onus is now on the developers to continue to develop the type of content that more mainstream gamers are used to in order for VR to attract the broader audience that it deserves, which is what we strive for at Resolution Games.”

We’ve reached out to Resolution to try and get a number with regard to sales or revenue for their paid titles and we’ll update this story if we hear back.

Angry Birds VR Gets New Content & Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale Coming to Steam

Angry Birds VR

Today, prolific virtual reality (VR) creator Resolution Games has not one but two announcements regarding a couple of titles. Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is getting new content whilst Cook-Out: Sandwich Tale will be making its way to PC VR headsets on Steam soon.

Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is getting another Spooky Levels update, taking players to the fourth and final Terror Peak world to defeat the dreaded Dr. Frankenswine. The addition of these free levels will bump the total number of studio created levels to 104. Whilst there won’t be anymore after this, the videogame does of course feature a level builder for an endless of player-created content.

As for Cook-Out: Sandwich Tale, it launched for Oculus Quest and Rift back in September 2020 and will soon be making its way over to Steam. Thus expanding support to Valve Index and HTC Vive as well as Oculus Rift. No date has yet been set with Resolution Games merely stating it’ll arrive “in the coming months.”

Rovio Entertainment’s bird flinging puzzler hit in early 2019, allowing fans of the franchise to step into this world like never before. You can move around the 3D structures to pinpoint the optimum location to launch Red and his gang of birds and bring the pigs buildings down.

Angry Birds VR

Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale was one of VRFocus’ favourite VR party videogames of 2020. Supporting up to four players, everyone is tasked with helping prepare delicious sandwiches for hungry customers, each with their own particular preferences. Gameplay turns into a frantic race to slice, grill and perfectly plate up orders.

Resolution Games is working on another couple of projects for 2021 including Demeo, a turn-based role-playing game (RPG) for multiple platforms. Its also helping publish Odd Raven Studios’ Carly and the Reaperman for Oculus Quest.

As the studio announces further details regarding its current and future projects, VRFocus will let you know.

Competition: Win Either Angry Birds VR or Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! for Oculus Quest

Acron & Angry Birds VR_ Isle of Pigs Halloween Updates

It’s coming up to the season of giving and what better way to start the celebrations early than with a competition where you can win some videogames. Today’s giveaway is a double bill, with Resolution Games’ Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! up for grabs.

Angry Birds VR

Rovio’s iconic Angry Birds franchise came to VR in 2019 with a selection of core levels which have been expanded upon over time. One of the major updates to the bird flinging experience was the addition of a level builder late last year, followed by online sharing to massively enhance the gameplay possibilities.

Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! on the other hand, is a purely multiplayer experience. One person is in VR controlling a tree trying to protect its golden acorns from a bunch of thieving squirrels. All the squirrels are controlled by players on mobile devices – via a free app – who are able to select characters with particular traits such as burrowing short distances underground. All making for a fast and entertaining party game.

Most recently, Resolution Games released a Halloween update for both titles, adding new levels as well as spooky themes to get into the spirit of the season as a lot of developers like to do.

Acron: Attack of the Squirrels

So onto the competition. VRFocus has got six codes to give away, three for Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and three for Acron: Attack of the Squirrels, both for the Oculus Quest platform. There are multiple ways to enter the giveaway with the standard prize draw entry rules applying: Follow us (or already be following us) on Twitter or alternatively, visit our Facebook page or YouTube channel to get an entry for each. Winners will receive a single randomly drawn code. The competition will be open until 11.59 pm GMT on Monday 26th October 2020. The draw will be made shortly thereafter.

Win Angry Birds VR or Acron: Attack of the Squirrels!

Angry Birds VR and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels Gear up for Halloween

Acron & Angry Birds VR_ Isle of Pigs Halloween Updates

Last year Resolution Games got into the spirit of Halloween with a spooky update for Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs and Acron: Attack of the Squirrels. The studio continues that effort this year with another haunting addition for both videogames.

Acron: Attack of the Squirrels

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is getting Slimy Slopes, a new area featuring 13 levels for players to tackle. Players will once again battle with Dr. Frankenswine and his evil machinations. This addition now means the videogame has 91 base levels to play. Plus there’s the new level builder which brought community sharing earlier this year.

As for Acron: Attack of the Squirrels there’s a new Halloween themed level called Sulky Swamp, as well as updated gameplay features. These include 1v1 gameplay, with the tree facing off against a singular squirrel. The challenge can then be increased by adding in bots.

“Since we expanded the level builder tool to online this summer, players have been spending more time than ever building, playing, and sharing their own levels in Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games. “We hope that fans enjoy our latest spooky update, and continue to build and share their latest creations with the Angry Birds community.”

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

“While Acron is great to experience locally, the cross-platform functionality has made this the perfect game to connect with friends both near and far over the last few months,” Palm continued. “Now with the launch of the Quest 2, we’re excited to give players a special Halloween treat in the form of new content and updated gameplay mechanics to try out with their friends and family over the upcoming holiday seasons.”

Both updates are free for owners. Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs supports Oculus Quest and Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index, Windows Mixed Reality and PlayStation VR, retailing for $14.99 while Acron: Attack of the Squirrels works with Oculus Quest and PC VR headsets. It retails for $19.99 with the iOS or Android app free to download. For further updates on Resolution Games’ latest titles, keep reading VRFocus.

Angry Birds VR: Isle Of Pigs Level Editor Updated With Online Sharing Capability

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs received a new update on most platforms that adds online sharing capability to the level editor feature that was released at the end of last year.

Angry Birds VR players are now able to build and share their own levels online, as well as play and rank others’ levels made by the community.

In December last year, Resolution Games added some pretty huge level editor capabilities to Angry Birds VR, allowing users to create levels with blocks, pigs and birds from the original game and fully create their own custom levels. However, the tools biggest restriction was the inability to share levels — user-created levels were only available on the device on which they were created, which made sharing levels with others impossible unless they used your headset.

angry birds vr online level builder

With this new update, user-created levels can now be uploaded online for others to download and try out. Here’s what Resolution Games had to say about the update:

“Players have creative freedom to design and play their own levels featuring their favorite feathered friends, and now they can also share their creations, have them ranked by the greater Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs community and discover an unlimited amount of player-created content!”

The ability to rank levels is an important addition, as it should bring good and creative levels to the forefront of the browser. On its site, Resolution Games notes that if a user comes across anything inappropriate when browsing custom levels online, they can report it in-game using the feedback function or by emailing takedown@resolutiongames.com.

The new online level sharing update is available now on Oculus Rift, Quest, Steam and Viveport, with PSVR coming soon.

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs’ Level Builder now Supports Online Sharing

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

Resolution Games has quite the selection of virtual reality (VR) titles under its belt, one of the best known franchise-wise being Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs in collaboration with Rovio Entertainment. The puzzle videogame arrived in early 2019, followed by a Level Builder towards the end of the year. That creative update only supported local gameplay. Now, the long-awaited online sharing mode has arrived.

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

With this update players can now share their creations with the world or download new one for endless gaming possibilities. The community can rank levels so others can browse and play new ones based on popularity, difficulty or uploaded time.

“Even from the beginning stages of developing our level builder tool, the goal has always been to empower the community to create their very own levels, however they want,” said Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games in a statement. “There’s an amazing sense of accomplishment when creating something within a game – especially in VR. Now, not only can players get this level of satisfaction, but they can take it a step further to share their work with the community to get the recognition deserved. Plus, with an infinite number of levels possible through the sharing feature, there’s no telling what kind of amazing creations the world will construct for endless hours of fun.”

If you’ve not played with the level builder yet the mode provides different blocks such as wood, ice and rock, as well as TNT, fans, boulders and or course pigs from the original videogame to create elaborate levels. Plus, there’s the option to select which birds can be used on that particular level.

“The Angry Birds community has been a very passionate group for the past ten years,” adds Sami Ronkainen, creative director at Rovio Entertainment. “Now that they are able to not only create but also share and discover new levels created by fellow fans, we can’t wait to see what the community comes up with.”

The Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs level builder update goes live today for Oculus Quest and Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality via the Oculus, Steam and Viveport stores. The PlayStation VR version won’t be released today, however. Resolution Games has said it’ll be soon but there’s no date at the moment. When those details are released, VRFocus will let you know.

Angry Birds VR Has Begun its Attack on Arcades Worldwide

Resolution Games launched Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs a year ago bringing Rovio Entertainment’s iconic mobile videogame to virtual reality (VR) headsets. Today the title expands its reach even further thanks to a new partnership with SynthesisVR, a content distribution platform for location-based entertainment (LBE) venues worldwide.

Angry Birds VR

VR arcades using SynthesisVR will have access to Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs in its entirety rather than a cut down made for LBE version. This means visitors will be able to play over 75 levels across a variety of environments as well as the Spooky Mode levels introduced for Halloween.

For those that like to set challenges for others, the Level Builder is available. Players can build challenges for their friends or other visitors, or the arcade itself can create its own unique levels found nowhere else. A neat little feature to help drive traffic.

“All LBVR operators will have access to license Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs without a subscription to Synthesis, making Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs available to every arcade non-exclusive of any management software,” SynthesisVR says in a statement. “SynthesisVR also announces this game is available under the Regional pricing plan introduced to help LBVR worldwide, making amazing content affordable to all.”

Angry Birds VR

“We are psyched to bring Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs to arcades around the world,” Paul Brady, co-founder and Chief Communications Officer of Resolution Games, said. “This game is so fun and interactive, and it’s really an ideal game to play in an arcade setting. Plus, with the Level Builder, players can build their own levels and challenge others in a tournament-style format for hours of gameplay.”

VRFocus gave the original videogame a decent four-star review, saying: “Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs is Angry Birds just in VR, and that’s no bad thing, equally fun and frustrating as it ever was.” Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs supports most of the major VR headsets including PlayStation VR, Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift/Rift S, HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality.

The Best Oculus Rift Games of 2019

So far VRFocus has listed its favourite PlayStation VR and Oculus Quest videogames of 2019 and now it’s the turn of Oculus Rift. While there will always be some crossover thanks to some awesome multiplatform releases, the headset also has some choice exclusives which aren’t to be missed. So here’s VRFocus’ roundup of the best titles which have arrived this year.

Oculus Rift S Lifestyle 1

The Best Oculus Rift Games of 2019:

Asgard’s Wrath

There were always going to be certain titles which would make this list, showcasing how far VR development has come over the last few years and Sanzaru Games’ Asgard’s Wrath is most certainly one of them. While it may require a decent VR-capable PC to make the most of the stunning visuals, Asgard’s Wrath also rewards Oculus Rift owners with plenty of close-quarters combat, a rich narrative based on Norse mythology and challenges galore.

As an Oculus Rift exclusive Asgard’s Wrath is one of those videogames all owners of the headset really should own, being a definitive AAA VR experience.

Asgard's WrathStormland

Another massive VR exclusive for Oculus Rift was Insomniac Games’ sci-fi adventure Stormland. If you prefer guns and robots over swords and monsters then Stormland is the place to be. Giving players an ever-changing open world to explore set across three cloud levels, Stormland offers a campaign allowing for single-player and co-op multiplayer gaming.

With excellent gun mechanics and a mixture of locomotion options including gliding across clouds, Stormland encourages you to explore everywhere by making almost everything climbable. Once the campaign has been completed you can keep returning to find fresh challenges as each week the world changes.

StormlandPistol Whip

If there’s one genre that’s surely captured the imagination of VR developers and consumers alike it’s rhythm-action. There are a number of videogames which could’ve made the cut but VRFocus went from Cloudhead Games’ latest, Pistol Whip.

Designed to make you feel like an action hero badass such as John Wick, on the standard setting you can hit bad guys at distance like a marksman, all to thumping beats. Find the gameplay is a little too easy then start to activate some modifiers like Dead Eye which removes the auto-aim feature. With or without these extras Pistol Whip is super fun to play no matter your VR experience.

Pistol Whip

Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series

Only available for Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series made the cut on the standalone headset and equally does the job here. While some may consider this an interactive experience rather than a fully-fledged videogame, however, you want to categorise it ILMxLAB’s trilogy expertly mixes the iconic franchise with VR technology.

Almost putting you inside a Star Wars film where you’re the central character, the main storyline lets you learn skills such as lightsaber duelling and using the force, all taught by Darth Vader himself. Once the campaign is over you can head to the dojo to really practice those skills. Sci-fi and VR fans will enjoy the experience, Star Wars fans will love it.

Vader Immortal

Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son

Certainly one of the more unusual (and unexpected) movie tie-ins of 2019, Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is essentially a sequel to the early 90s movie starring Bill Murray. As the title suggests, you play Phil Connors Jr. as he returns  to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Caught in another time loop, you need to relive the same day over and over, solving residents problems and other challenges to escape.

VRFocus’ four-star review noted: “Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is a lovable VR adventure that doesn’t do any disservice to the original material on which it’s based. With a unique art style and engaging story, Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son offers an unexpectedly enjoyable adventure, and you don’t even need to have seen the film.”

Groundhog DayGORN

After blood, carnage, and utter, utter mayhem? Well, then Gorn should be on your want list. Originally a Steam Early Access title from 2017, Gorn saw its official launch back in the summer, allowing players to engage in some brutal gladiatorial combat.

While screenshots make this bloody brawler look gruesome thanks to decapitated heads, smashed in body parts and wall to wall crimson, Gorn doesn’t take itself seriously. The weapons bend and flex like comedy mallets, and enemy bodies all have rag-doll physics. Due to the nature of the combat, the experience is very physical, encouraging you to put in plenty of effort. As VRFocus said in its review: “Brutal, dumb and addictively fun.”

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs

Resolution Games brought Rovio Entertainment’s massively popular mobile puzzler Angry Birds into VR at the beginning of the year, with the experience offering a fine take on the building destruction videogame. Its inclusion in this listing is thanks to a new update, greatly expanding the gameplay possibilities.

This month saw the studio release a Level Builder option for Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs so you can make your own levels and challenge your friends to complete them. Thanks to the level builder Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs now offers a far more rounded experience, that doesn’t simply end when he single-player campaign is over. One for puzzle fans the world over.

Espire 1: VR Operative

Digital Lode’s very first VR title Espire 1: VR Operative had a bit of a rocky start, with the initial September launch delayed with 24hrs notice. The delay saw the videogame pushed back a couple of months but that hasn’t hindered the experience. Offering a futuristic plot where you control an Espire model 1 robot to complete missions, the gameplay is designed around stealth, so there are plenty of places to hide, you can scale walls to maintain vantage points and you can tranquilise enemies rather than killing them.

Of course, should you get spotted or simply find a gung-ho approach more exciting then all hell will break loose and guards will start raining down gunfire. Espire 1: VR Operative offers the most standard first-person shooter (FPS) gameplay of any title on this roundup, yet it manages to deliver a videogame for VR fans looking for a Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell experience.

Espire1

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted

Who doesn’t love a good scare from a horror videogame? It’s something VR does so well and for 2019 fans were treated to the resurgence of a classic, Five Nights at Freddy’s. Steel Wool Studios kept what made the originals great and expanded upon the concept of original creator Scott Cawthon, including both the classics and brand new mini-games.

If you’ve not heard of the Five Nights universe the basic premise revolves around a theme park with some fairly questionable animatronics. Each mini-game will have you watching CCTV systems or repairing ventilation systems, whilst at the same time trying to stay alive and avoid being…well you know, killed. Not one for the faint of heart, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted offers some of the best jump-scares for any VR headset.

Five Nights at Freddy's VRTetris Effect

Possibly a little controversial because the PC version of Tetris Effect is exclusive to the Epic Games Store, that doesn’t mean to say it shouldn’t be included here as its still an awesome VR puzzle experience.

The classic Tetris gameplay is still there, it’s the visuals and audio that have really been overhauled. They are in sync with the gameplay so as you score more points by making lines you’ll be treated to evermore stunning effects which envelop and mesmerize, without distracting from the gameplay. It’s why VRFocus gave Tetris Effect five stars for its review.
