Steam May Have Leaked Among Us VR’s Release Date

An update to a Steam database entry may have leaked a possible release date for Among Us VR, ahead of its scheduled appearance at the upcoming Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, but take it with a big pinch of salt for now.

SteamDB, a site that tracks changes to Steam store database entries, showed two recent changes on a previously-unnamed store app entry. The first is a title update – Among Us VR – and the second is an accompanying release date of November 10, which the site itself recognizes may be incorrect. The date still could just be a placeholder and change further down the line, or it could be the real release date for both Steam and other platforms, like Quest.

Regardless, it’s certainly a possible date for Among Us VR – it would be a holiday launch, just a few weeks before Thanksgiving and then Christmas. This might be perfect timing for such a huge release for younger audiences, who are likely to receive headsets as presents during the holidays.

There’s a chance that the Steam store listing is being prepared ahead of a store page launch next week, after we get more Among Us VR info at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase. While the showcase itself is Quest-focused, Among Us VR has already been confirmed for multiple other platforms as well, including PC VR and PSVR.

The port is being handled via a collaboration between original developers Innersloth, Robot Teddy and well-known VR studio Schell Games, who were behind the I Expect You To Die series and Until You Fall. It will be a full 3D conversion of the flatscreen game that blew up during the pandemic. You can view the announcement trailer and read more details here.

Keep an eye out for more details on the game, and potentially its release date, at next week’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase.

Among Us VR, Cities: VR Confirmed For Meta Quest Showcase

Among Us VR and Cities: VR will be present at the Meta Gaming Showcase next month.

The showcase is the second of its kind, providing the latest looks at titles coming to Quest. As announced yesterday, it will begin at 10am PT on April 20, hosted by Oculus Studio Executive Producer Ruth Bram.

Yesterday we speculated on what we might see at the showcase, including potential updates on GTA: San Andreas, Vertigo Games, Stress Level Zero, Splinter Cell/Assassin’s Creed and Among Us VR.

Well, it looks like we’ll be getting our wish for at least one of those — the Among Us VR Twitter account confirmed the game will appear in the upcoming showcase, featuring some new footage. Hopefully we’ll also learn a little about a possible release date for the game, too.

We also got confirmation that Cities: VR, the spin-off of the popular Skylines game, will be at the show. Developer Fast Travel pointed out that you won’t want to miss the event. Could this be where we learn about the spring release date for the Quest 2 exclusive?

For now, those are the only developers and publishers we’ve heard from — the rest of the showcase remains wrapped under a blanket of mystery. We should also expect a bit of the unexpected as well — Meta confirmed yesterday that alongside updates on previously-announced titles, we’re also in store for some brand new game announcements.

It won’t be the only VR showcase this year either — the UploadVR Showcase is back this June. Keep an eye out for more details soon.

Among Us VR Reveals Map, Several Gameplay Snippets

We haven’t seen a full trailer for the upcoming Among Us VR yet, but we have seen plenty of small gameplay snippets, and the game’s map.

The Among Us VR Twitter account has been sharing several glimpses at gameplay since the game’s reveal in December. Most of them give us quick looks at some of the game’s rooms, which have obviously been redesigned for VR.

Among Us VR Gameplay Snippets Revealed

One interesting clip, though, shows two players high-fiving, pointing towards some of the new social interactions we can expect to enjoy in the game.

Another clip shows two players waving at each other.

Perhaps most interestingly, we’ve also got a glimpse of the game’s map from a top-down perspective. This is, of course, how you’d play the traditional game. Interestingly enough this does confirm that the VR map will be practically identical to the original game, though it looks like there might be some expected reshuffling of environmental objects like crates.

What we’re yet to see is how the actual gameplay might differ in VR, and developer Schell Games hasn’t confirmed if there will be cross-play with the traditional version of the game yet. That will definitely play a deciding role on just how differently this version of the game handles.

We don’t have a release date for Among Us VR yet, but we do know the game’s coming to Quest, PSVR and PC VR.

Multiplayer Betrayal Awaits as Among Us VR Announced

Among Us VR

Yesterday (or this morning depending on where you are in the world) The Game Awards held its annual event celebrating the videogame industry, and as part of the showcase a very exciting virtual reality (VR) announcement popped up. Innersloth, the creators of hugely popular multiplayer Among Us revealed that a VR version is in the works and that it’s being developed by I Expect You to Die 2 developer Schell Games.

Among Us VR

If by some chance you’ve managed to miss all the hype around Among Us, the frantic party title originally appeared in 2018 for mobile devices followed by PC and then Nintendo Switch. Viewed top-down, 4-15 players have to work together to ensure all systems are working in the spaceship they’re on. The twist is that one or more of the crew are imposters and their sole goal is to kill everyone on board. The rest of the crew have to work out who the imposters are and throw them out of the airlock.

Among Us VR will maintain the same hectic gameplay the original is known for but this time it’ll be entirely in first-person. The VR version will support between 4-10 players and feature all the emergency meetings, crewmate tasks and ability to sabotage. It’s important to note that due to the first-person viewpoint, Among Us VR is a standalone experience and won’t support the original videogame.

“We are grateful to the community who continues to share our game with friends and family and support us,” said Victoria Tran, Community Director at Innersloth in a statement. “Schell Games has a legacy of creating award-winning virtual reality titles, and we couldn’t be more excited to create a brand new Among Us experience for our existing fans and new players. We can’t wait for players to become Crewmates in a first-person environment.”

“We’re excited to take all the features players worldwide have enjoyed from Among Us and tailor them to a fully immersive experience in virtual reality,” Jesse Schell adds. “There’s a lot to love about Among Us and this partnership presents a perfect pairing of the runaway success of the original game and the upward trajectory of the virtual reality ecosystem.”

Schell Games has confirmed that Among Us VR will be coming to Meta Quest 2, PlayStation VR and SteamVR headsets although no timeframe has been revealed just yet. Additionally, Innersloth will finally bring the party title to Xbox and PlayStation on 14th December 2021. For further updates on Among Us VR keep reading VRFocus.

Hit Party Game ‘Among Us’ is Getting a Full-blown VR Remake

Social party game Among Us rose to viral success in the midst of the pandemic. Calls to bring the game’s ‘imposter-hunting’ gameplay to VR were immediate, and unofficial VR versions of the game sprang up in no time. Now the game is getting a full blown Among Us VR remake, headed by one of VR’s most experienced studios.

Among Us is a low-fi, top-down game about running around a spaceship with friends and trying to find out which one of you is secretly an imposter whose only goal is to kill everyone on board without being found out. During the pandemic the game skyrocketed in popularity, with nearly 400,000 concurrent players latching onto its unique social gameplay as a way to stay in touch with (and brutally betray) friends and family.

On the surface it might not look like the kind of game that’s screaming for a VR version, but if you’ve played it you’ll surely know how the social dynamic, much more than the graphics or mechanics, really makes the game shine.

And on that front, a VR version of the game could be something truly special. With social VR offering such a powerful way to feel present with other people, bringing body-language into the mix could make for a wholly unique imposter-hunting experience.

We’ll find out soon enough how Among Us mixes with VR, because Innersloth, the studio behind the game, has announced that a full-blown Among Us VR game is in development.

The VR version of the game will adopt an immersive, first-person point of view supporting four to ten players, and is said to include “all the same core mechanics” from the original, including crewmate tasks, sabotages, and emergency meetings.

Our understanding is that the VR version of the game will not be compatible with the original version, but luckily a wide range of headsets will be supported; Among Us VR will be available on Quest 2, PlayStation VR, and SteamVR. We haven’t gotten official confirmation on cross-play and support for the original Quest, though we’ve reached out for confirmation.

Innersloth tapped one of VR’s most experienced studios, Schell Games, to make Among Us VR a reality. The studio has released some six VR titles since 2016, including popular games like I Expect You to Die and Until You Fall.

No release date for Among Us VR has been announced yet, but we expect to hear more next year.

Among Us VR Announced For Quest, PSVR And PC VR

Among Us VR is coming to Quest, PSVR and PC VR sometime in the future. Discuss!

The VR adaptation of the incredibly popular multiplayer game was just revealed during The Game Awards. The new version of the game is being developed by I Expect You To Die and Until You Fall studio, Schell Games, in collaboration with Robot Teddy and original developer, Innersloth. Check out a brief announcement trailer below.

Among Us VR Announced

As the trailer shows, this is a full 3D conversion of the game. In Among Us, players compete in a virtual whodunnit – each is a member of a spaceship crew that’s set various tasks to complete around the environment. One player, however, is an imposter that must kill the rest of the crew without being spotted. Players can report dead bodies and discuss who they think is the murderer.

The game’s proved to be an enormous sensation over the past few years. Schell Games wouldn’t confirm if this version of the game would support cross-play with the 2D version at this point in time. There’s also no specific release window, but hopefully we’ll hear more about the release sometime in 2022. For now, we do know that the game will support 8 – 10 player matches.

This isn’t the first take on Among Us we’ve seen in VR; fans made an unofficial clone of the game inside VRChat a few years back.

Someone Remade ‘Among Us’ in VR and It’s Strangely More Fun Than the Original

Thought playing the unofficial Fall Guys remake in VR was fun? Now you can sample some of the traitorous mayhem in the hit social game Among Us (2018) in VR too—and it’s strangely more fun than the original in a few ways.

If you’ve never played Among Us, here’s the jist: it’s an online social party game that puts you and up to 10 players on a space station. Among you is a single imposter who kills crewmates and causes all sorts of havoc as the regular crew goes about completing tasks aboard the ship. Crew members can call emergency meetings, and vote for a suspected imposter, who is then summarily executed by airlock ejection.

Just like in the unofficial Fall Guys remake, someone used Rec Room’s room-creation tools to basically recreate Among Us, and it’s really surprising how well the social game works in VR.

YouTuber ‘HairyManLegs’ captured a few rounds, showing off just how cool the game is in VR, replete with face-to-face emergency meetings, interactive tasks designed for VR, and physically stabbing other crew members as the imposter. The full video is definitely worth a watch as a primer for the fun:

Granted, the VR remake is missing out on a few of the things that make the official 2D game truly great—the silly cartoon deaths, fun outfits, and gameplay elements like a reduced field of view when the lights are off, which adds a serious element of surprise when there’s someone lurking in the dark, just waiting to trap you in a room to kill you.

The VR version certainly isn’t perfect, as you’ll have to assemble a crew of players with basically whoever’s around at the moment, which even on the bustling Rec Room platform can be difficult, making it less of a casual drop-in game and more of an activity you have to plan. When the stars align though and you can get a good number of players, be it friends or friendly randos, it really shows that Among Us would make a pretty awesome VR game if the creators, Innersloth, were so inclined to bring it to VR.

If you want to play the Among Us recreation, head over to Rec Room (available on SteamVR, Oculus Quest, and PSVR) and search for ‘Among Us RR’ in the community rooms section.
