You Can Still Buy an Oculus Rift + Touch Bundle for $400 on Amazon.com

The big Oculus Rift Summer Sale may be officially over, which saw the Rift + Touch bundle temporarily slashed from $600 to $400 for a limited time, but for some reason the US Amazon site hasn’t reverted yet to the new $500 price tag, making now the very last time you’ll be able to get the deal.

Amazon is likely to correct this sometime today, as every world-wide Amazon site has done so including other official distributors. Follow the link here for the unbeatable Amazon deal.

Oculus already extended their Summer Sale by “a few weeks,” but only announced a few days ago that the sale would come to an end right before midnight of the 4th, leaving many high and dry waiting without the extra funds to finally pull the trigger on the incredibly priced deal.

Dieses Paket kostet 449 US Dollar. Ab 1.

Amazon Patents Technology For At-Home Augmented Reality

Amazon have been quietly bringing augmented reality (AR) technology to its planned high-street stores, but as yet the internet giant has not brought any great innovations for AR or virtual reality (VR). That may be about to change, as Amazon has secured several patents regarding AR technology for use at home.

The patents builds on technology previously patented in December 2016 and involve a set-up that requires cameras, computers and projectors to display an interactive scene on a physical surface without need for a headset.

“The projected content may include electronic books, videos, images, interactive menus, or any other sort of visual content,” Amazon said in its patent filing. “Various types of cameras and sensors may be used to capture images representing the scene and a person’s hand within the scene.”

There is at present no indication on what the technology is called, or if Amazon are planning on producing a commercial version of the AR technology themselves, or if they are planning to licence it to another company. The AR functionality could be used to add value to Amazon’s vast library of books, movies and TV shows that are available to Amazon Prime users.

Amazon have previously experimented with implementing AR technology at its furniture stores, to allow customers can use AR technology to see how sofas or wardrobes might look when placed in their homes. This technology has not yet been rolled out, so some analysts are speculating on if this projected AR technology could see use Amazon’s physical stores.

VRFocus will bring you further news on Amazon’s AR technology as it becomes available.

Amazon Prime Day Deals Include PlayStation VR, HTC Vive and Samsung Gear VR

If you’ve been in the market for a virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) but have been awaiting some decent deals to appear this week certainly has one or two available. Yesterday VRFocus reported on Oculus launching a very aggressive promotion for the Oculus Rift with Touch, dropping the price down to $399 USD/£399 GBP for a limited time. If you happen to be an Amazon Prime member then there are further offers to be had.

At present Amazon has two very good deals going on if you’re after a PlayStation VR or HTC Vive headset. You will need to be a Prime member to make use of these offers but you can try the service for free for a limited time.

The first is the PlayStation VR plus the PlayStation Camera for $399.99. This also includes redeemable digital codes for: Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, PSVR Mechanized Combat League, and PSVR Worlds.

HTC Vive stock image 2

The second is for HTC Vive, with customers able to pickup the headset for $699.99. This price includes Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Everest VR, and Richie’s Plank Experience.

One thing to note is that these offers are only for US-based customers, here in the UK there’s decidedly less on offer. But there are still saving to be had. The second generation of the Samsung Gear VR is currently reduced in price, available at a very reasonable £39.99. This comes with the newer USB-Type C connection plus Mini USB connector to fit Samsung models: Galaxy S8, S7, S7 Edge, Note 5, S6 Edge+, S6, S6 Edge. This doesn’t come with the new Gear VR controller however.

Should you need an input device there’s the SteelSeries Stratus XL, on a Prime Day deal for $30.99. This featured in VRFocusguide to the Best Gamepads for Gear VR when it was priced at £99.99.

If any further deals appear VRFocus will keep you up to date on the latest offers.

Get £100/$100 Oculus Store Credit With Your New Oculus Rift This Month

Oculus are hoping to bring more customers over to the Rift this June, with a three-figure bonus to anyone willing to invest in their latest gadgets. Oculus announced the UK deals on their Oculus UK Facebook page, telling customers looking to buy an Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) and Oculus Touch motion controllers that they will be rewarded with £100 GBP or $100 USD to spend on the Oculus Store – not a bad deal.

Mainstream adoption of dedicated virtual reality (VR) devices is good so far, but not as high as HMD producers like Oculus and HTC would like it to be. Oculus are clearly hoping that a big voucher for a few games on their store will entice customers on the fence to take the plunge.

Oculus Research

Interested buyers in the UK can purchase the Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch from Scan Computers, Amazon UK or GAME to get their store credit. In the US customers should turn their sights to Amazon US.

Eagle-eyed consumers will spot a few other bonuses available from those retailers too – GAME are offering a further three free games to sweeten the deal; Lucky’s Tale, Dragon Front and Toy Box. Scan Computers UK are also offering the space dogfighter EVE: Valkyrie.

Amazon US’ product page specifies how customers will get their store credit; “We will send you a promotional code with redemption instructions via email within two days of your order shipping.”

If you’ve got a VR ready PC and have been on the fence about VR, this might be the perfect time to take the plunge into the virtual world.

Automotives – The Rise of the Machines

Robots will take control. It’s a scary state of mind, but it depends on how humans will control it. Automotive, ADAS and self-driving systems are fast-growing markets that are already adopted by all the big players and brands in the car and high-tech industry. It’s not so obvious that the “big boys” of the car industry trust that solution and are already implementing it into new cars. Behind the decision stands a lot of thinking and questions to ask:

Is it safe?
What are the risks?
Is it cost effective?
Is it the best timing to go to market?
Do we really need it?
What are the real benefits?

Everyone heard about Mobileye’s solution, “Tesla”s self-driving car and google’s vision/ But behind the big names, there are a lot of types and solutions that we still didn’t hear about them, and new trends and technologies that are being developed in the back yard of the big companies. Automotive solutions combine inside several solutions that already exist such as, Computer vision, AI, AR, and IoT. What stands behind all the new buzz words, is it just a narrow point of view into the future where we as humans will try to lose control, We can’t answer everything here, but we need to understand the consequences of the new trends and technologies.

Everyone is trying to position themselves as innovative.

Toyota that is using an artificial intelligence agent, called Yui. Yui takes communicating with your car to a next level with the AI actually learning your habits and then responding with an in-car lighting, sound, and touch. Toyota believes that a simple “question and answer” based voice command system (like Siri) is outdated and the above AI technology is the future.

Ford and Amazon “Alexa” are collaborating and providing voice control system. Nvidia, known more for its excellent processing chips and graphic setups, has tied up with Audi to build the next generation of autonomous vehicles. They have announced they will showcase a self-driving car within 12 months. The two companies have already been working closely during the last one year to create this new AI car platform that will act as a base to future Audi products.

Eyesight, a sensing solution for in-car environment, tracks the driver’s attention on the road, detecting when the driver is distracted or is showing signs of drowsiness. Using deep learning and other machine learning tools, eyeSight’s automotive solutions addresses three main aspects of the driving experience:

1. Driver awareness.
2. Infotainment Control.
3. Driver identification.

Argus Cybersecurity – This Israeli-based company is tapping into an explosive new marketplace: Automotive Cybersecurity. Millions of new cars and trucks on roads today have Internet connectivity, allowing automakers to deliver a host of new services to its customers, including Wi-Fi hotspots and the ability to remotely unlock and lock a vehicle from a mobile app. But the increasing level of connectivity, too, is going to expose consumers and manufacturers to a new set of risks, if, or more likely when, hackers are able to find weaknesses and exploit them.

Polysync, founded in 2013, has developed a middleware platform that lets automakers and other autonomous vehicle startups test, gather data, and eventually deploy driverless vehicle applications without spending an inordinate amount of time and resources. The system is designed to turn software algorithms and sensors into plug-and-play applications.

See you in the future :-)

Amazon Is Working On ‘A Completely New VR Shopping Experience’

Amazon Is Working On ‘A Completely New VR Shopping Experience’

Tracking Amazon’s work in VR can be tricky, as the company is famously quiet in response to media inquiries while seemingly being involved in multiple areas.

The company is helping to make VR games with its Lumberyard development engine, and appears to be interested in VR video for its streaming service. But what about when it comes to its juggernaut online store? It sounds like the company has big plans there too.

Amazon is looking for a Sr. Software Development Manager in Virtual Reality to work in its Seattle offices, according to a new job listing. The listing states that the company is looking to “revolutionize online shopping for millions of customers worldwide” while seeking someone to “lead the development of a completely new VR shopping experience at Amazon.”

That makes it pretty clear that Amazon is working on a way to let us buy things inside our headsets. The listing notes that experience with “Oculus Rift, Gear VR, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, or Google Daydream” is a bonus, so we’d expect this service to come to multiple platforms too.

Another listing for a VR Tech Lead says the service will boast “new features that the industry has not seen before.”

It is not hard to see what use Amazon might have for a VR version of its store. We can easily picture people heading into VR to inspect virtual representations of products before ordering the real thing, perhaps even testing them out. Now that VR is getting closer to full body tracking imagine putting on clothes to make sure they fit you or look good, for example.

Last August we uncovered a similar listing from the company that stated it would launch a physical and digital VR shopping experience. Hopefully we’ll see whatever the company has planned sooner rather than later.
