‘TButt’ Is A Proven Interface For Multiplatform VR Development In Unity

tbutt multiplatform games virtual virtual reality floor plan along together

VR developer Turbo Button released an interface for multiplatform VR development in Unity. Turbo Button is the developer behind Floor Plan, Along Together, and the official Adventure Time VR game.

The studio used the interface for their two most recent titles, Floor Plan & Along Together. But TButt has also been used by other studios, most notably by Tender Claws for their hit Virtual Virtual Reality.

Turbo Button additionally stated that the interface already supports Oculus Quest, and that several in development Quest titles are already using it.

The issue TButt aims to solve is the fragmentation that exists between VR platforms SDKs of today. Without an interface like this developers have to rewrite code to achieve the same result on different VR platforms. TButt abstracts input, performance settings, tracking data, and more.

Input (handling controllers) is a core focus of the interface. Input is the most significant difference between VR platforms today. TButt handles everything from basic 3DoF laser pointers to dual 6DoF controllers. A useful feature is that it allows for emulating a 3DoF controller in the Unity editor for more rapid development than pushing a full build to a standalone headset.

TButt supports the Oculus, SteamVR, Windows MR and DayDream platforms. Crucially, it also complies with the publishing requirements of the default stores for each platform, meaning it can be used to ship real games.

TButt is free and open source, leveraging the popular MIT Licence. This lets any developer use and modify it even for commercial projects. It’s encouraging to see the spirit of co-operation in the VR development community- hopefully it lives on as VR enters the mainstream market in coming years.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR

“The achievement made by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is one by way of both hardware and design to capitalise upon this. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR’s level of immersion is simply fantastic, and while Bethesda Softworks could well have gone the route of DOOM VFR and created a shorter spin-off experience, developing a brand new The Elder Scrolls instalment specifically for VR would have taken many years and far too much in the way of resources for what is still a nascent audience. Building Relationships. Are Player To Player-Character Relationships In VR The Way Forward?

Every since the first virtual reality (VR) videogames and experiences started to become available they all shared the common goal of putting you, the player, at the center of the action. From shootouts with robots, driving fast cars, or flying in the air, each and every title made sure you were fully immersed. The same goes for those titles which see you being a spectator within the virtual world and being able to interact with objects and characters. Now however, it seems as though developers are taking a new approach to interaction and immersion within VR videogames in the form of building relationships between the player and the player-character.

Moss screenshot

PlayStation VR owners were treated to the magical adventure of Moss back in February of this year. Embarking on a grad journey in which players needed not only control and guide the lovable Quill through this title, but where they themselves were a character within the virtual world that Quill would interactive with. The developers at Polyarc implemented sign language into the title as a means for Quill to talk to the player who would be watching from above. This was not only a bold move in terms of design and communication between player and avatar, but a move that made Quill real. It gave a sense of identity and life to Quill, more so then players had seen in a VR title before and it resulted in an unforgettable experience.

Jump forward to the past week and the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 and it seems as though a theme has appeared within VR videogames. To quote Justin Roiland of Squanch Games talking about his upcoming title Trover Saves The Universe, “It’s co-op with yourself.”

“Your in the game as a first-person character but then there’s a third-person character that your also controlling,” Roiland explains: “we want the player to feel like their the star of this game and their doing things with Trover that’s like typical gamer stuff like jumping over something, and Trover will responses in real-time hes like ‘Why you over here doing this thing you should be over there’ or like ‘we’re not on track!’ so we continue to build it that way”

Trover Saves the Universe

This level of interaction between player and player-character offers a greater sense of immersion, building a more believable emotional connection between the two. Though VR is an immersive experience by nature the move to build more realist relationships with the player at the center of the action is a powerful and interacting design choice by developers. It could, in fact, lead to more impressive experiences by offering a stronger sense of care for the characters.

Ghost Giant by Zoink Games is another PlayStation VR title which builds a similar connection between player and player-character into the core of the experience. Players will be helping out a character called Louis who is very alone. It’s during this time in need that the player appears and starts to build a bond with cute character, helping them through a number of different challenges. A similar set up was used in Along Together, where players act as an imaginary friend to a kid who they must watch over and protect, alongside helping find their missing dog.

Even the recently revealed Astro Bot Rescue Mission puts more focus on the player and player-character relationship but having the player once again be a part of the world and not just a spectator. Players will be able to interact with Astro more than just controller input and one of two actions. They are present in the virtual world and need to ensure that they work with Astro in order to save the lost crew members. Though not as much of an emotional connection as other titles, it is still a bond that will ultimately be at the core of the experience.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission - Screenshot (E3 2018)

Emotional, believable characters have always been a dream of content developers for years ensuring that players will invested in the experience and care about the characters within a world. What is interesting though is this shift in reinforcing the player as a living part of a virtual world, with real interactions and relationships to care about. With the release of Moss really pushing this connection forward, it now seems that developers elsewhere want to take inspiration and deliver equally, if not more, emotional bonds within their work.

The VR offerings at E3 2018 might have been small in number, but those titles which were revealed look to offer something more than just a standard videogame experience. It seems that emotional connections, bonds, and relationships with believable characters is the way forward. No matter the direction the industry takes however, VRFocus will make sure to bring you all the latest.

Competition: Oculus Store Codes For Along Together Available to Win

If all the announcements and reveals at E3 2018 have got you excited to try out some new virtual reality (VR) titles, then you might be interested to learn that VRFocus have got three codes for the Oculus Store version of puzzle-platform title Along Together up for grabs.

Along Together is the creation of Los Angeles-based developer Turbo Button in which the player takes on the role of a child’s imaginary friend, acting as a guide and protector to the child.

Along Together key art

The child’s dog, Rishu goes missing, and the child sets off on a journey to rescue him, along with you as their imaginary guardian. This involves exploring amazing worlds and finding hidden secrets that are hidden across the landscapes.

The player needs to work together with the child to solve various puzzles and move towards the goal. The player mostly manifests as a semi-transparent hand which can push, pull grab and move objects to let the child move forwards.

The development team say that they were inspired by classic point-and-click adventures like Monkey Island and also from one of the most famous and beloved depictions of imaginary friends, Calvin and Hobbes.

If this appeals to you, then we will be running four competitions across four days giving you a number of opportunities to win a copy. Previously there were cods available for Steam and the European PlayStation Store. Ghost Giant Is A New PSVR Title Similar To Along Together

Ghost Giant Is A New PSVR Title Similar To Along Together

After Sony revealed Tetris Effect earlier this week from the creators of Rez Infinite, they’re back today with another new PSVR game announcement.

Ghost Giant is a new title from Zoink Games that puts players in the ethereal ghost hands of a giant being tasked with protecting and helping a little cat-like person named Lois.

According to the PS Blog announcement, players will:

“Use your see-through hands to lift furniture, vehicles and trees. You can even rotate and open entire buildings to reveal the stories going on inside. The picturesque town of Sancourt becomes your own little dollhouse sandbox.”

If that sounds familiar, that’s because it’s basically the exact same concept behind Along Together from Turbo Button. It was launched on Daydream originally but has since been Moss vibes as well.

It feels a little odd to have a big reveal announcement for a game that seems so similar to one that just released on the platform (Along Together) so hopefully there is enough here to separate it.

What do you think of the news? Let us know down in the comments below!

What could have possibly happened? Now you can witness it yourself, with two unique heroines to control and two different stories to unfold!”

Smashing The Battle VR is currently available for £6.39 (GBP) down from £7.99.

ADR1FT

ADR1FT proves that Oculus VR’s comfort ratings are not to be taken lightly. This may be a launch title for the Oculus Rift, but you might consider easing yourself in with some of the ‘Comfortable’ and ‘Moderate’ experiences before jumping into the deep end. That will be an understandably frustrating proposition for many fans, but if there were to be any ‘doctor’s orders’ about getting started with VR, it would be this.” – Read VRFocus’ Staff Writer Jamie Feltham’s preview of ADR1FT.

ADR1FT is available for only £3.74 (GBP) right now on sale from £14.99.

That is all for this week but remember that VRFocus gathers all the best sales and deals every week, so check back next weekend at the same time to discover more.
