Dell Report: There Is Still Great Opportunity for VR Growth Amongst PC Gamers

A new study by Dell reports that the videogaming community is now larger and more diverse than it has ever been, with the profile of the average videogame player having changed significantly, though when it comes to virtual reality (VR) there is still room for growth.

The report shows that the videogame market exceeded $30 billion in 2016 and is forecast to grow at a 6% compounded annual growth rate through 2019. This growth has changed how videogame fans are perceived, and how they consider themselves.

A survey conducted by Alienware showed that the stereotypical image of a teenager playing violent games alone in their room is now a distant memory. Gamers are social with 27% having introduced three or four friend or family members to gaming, and 25% having introduced five or more.
This trends is reflected in the VR sphere, where social VR is a major trend growing in popularity.

60% of survey respondents said that they used videogames for relaxation, with 49% saying they played videogames to relieve stress. 40% of those surveyed said they were not overly concerned about their skill level, but only 6% identified as a newbie.

As for VR, only 30% of those surveyed said they played VR, augmented reality (AR) or mixed reality (MR) for an average of six hours per week. When asked what they were most excited about when they think of the future of videogames, almost a quarter mentioned untethered VR, while 20% mentioned VR arcades.

The report also showed that videogames are not just for play, with four out of ten saying that gaming has made them think more strategically, while 37% said it has helped them improve hand-eye coordination and increase reaction time. This feeds into work being done by educational establishments and businesses who are using VR and gaming to improve training.

VR still has some way to go before gaining widespread acceptance in the mainstream, but VRFocus will continue to report on every development.

Dell and Alienware Launch New Range of VR-Ready Laptops

PC manufacturer Dell and its videogame-focussed subsidiary Alienware have shown a willingness towards becoming a one-stop-shop for users wanting to get into virtual reality (VR). The company seems set to continue this commitment with the announcement of its new line of VR-ready gaming laptops.

Dell has become one of the vanishingly few hardware manufacturers to offer a way to buy both VR-capable PC and a HMD in the same online store. At CES 2018 the company announced it would be offering the HTC Vive Pro in its store, along with word of a new VR-ready desktop PC. The gaming laptop line is also now getting a refresh.

Six new Windows 10 gaming laptops have been announced, all of which are based on the new 8th Gen Intel Core processors. The budget G Series of gaming laptops will be priced from $749 (USD) and will offer high performance for gamers on a budget.

For those looking for a higher-end experience, Alienware are launching the 16 and 17 gaming laptops. These are available with 8th Gn Intel Core i5, i7 or i9 processors, sporting up to six cores and allowing overclocking up to 5.0GHz. This line of laptops will come equipped with Alienware Cryo-Tech v2.0, with thinner fan blades and a special vapour chamber to keep the equipment as cool as possible.

“We are ambassadors to the PC gaming world,” says Frank Azor, vice president and general manager, Alienware and Dell Gaming. “From pushing the boundaries of innovation in our Alienware line and creating systems for today’s top competitive gamers and leagues, to our new affordable G Series line-up, we’re enabling gamers of all levels to game at their best.”

The Dell G3 15 and 17 laptops are powered by Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050, but can be upgraded up to 1060 Max-Q and up to Intel Core i7 processors. For higher performance, the G5 and G7 are available, which come with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPUs as standard, along with 6GB of RAM and dual drives with SSD options.

Further details can be found on the Dell website. The HTC Vive Pro will be available from the Dell website in the USA from the 5th April, 2018. For future updates on new VR-capable PCs keep checking back with VRFocus.

Dell Will Be Bringing its VR Hardware to IFA

This year’s IFA Berlin Trade Show looks to be very popular with companies working on virtual reality products. Among the companies planning to make an appearance at one of Europe’s biggest consumer electronics fairs is PC hardware manufacturer Dell, who are planning on bringing its Dell Windows 10 Mixed Reality device, along with a range of VR-capable PC hardware.

The Dell Mixed reality headset is planned to be released sometime in October, 2017 and will sit alongside other Windows 10 compatible headsets from ASUS, Acer, Lenovo and HP. The developer units from HP and Acer have gone up for order on the Microsoft Store already.

The Dell version of the device will feature a 1440 x 1440 LCD display, a front-hinged visor and an anti-stain coating to keep the white device clean. Full technical specifications are yet to be released, but the price is expected to be £349.99 (USD) for the headset, with motion controllers costing an extra $99.99. This would make the device more expensive device than either the Acer headset at $299 or the HP version at $329.

PAX West is also on Dell’s mind, where they will be bringing VR-ready hardware such as the Dell Inspiron 15 700 Gaming Notebook, which boasts a 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 powering the graphics, with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and a 15.6” HD display. Dell subsidiary Alienware will also be present, presenting its new curved gaming monitor and its line of Alienware Aurora desktop PCs

VRFocus will bring you further information on the Dell Mixed Reality headset and other Dell VR products as it becomes available.

Dell and Alienware Bring New VR Hardware to E3

Alienware and Dell are bringing their latest virtual reality (VR) ready machines to E3 2017, and they’re bringing VR to the masses with what Dell believe to be a much more affordable VR solution. E3 2017 has been great for VR videogames thus far, but will it convince gamers to buy a VR-ready desktop?

Alienware first debuted two new models of their Area-51 desktop, with AMD Threadripped and Intel X-Series CPUs.

Not content simply bringing desktops to the show, Alienware also introduced a line of gaming monitors, keyboards and mice – all complete with the premium quality you’d expect from an Alienware product.

But for gamers on the go, a desktop just won’t suffice – which is of course why the Alienware 15 notebook exists – and now, complete with a GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q GPU in the machine, the notebook will be running the very best-looking games available – which includes VR, of course.

And then there’s Dell, Alienware’s more conventional little brother. Not content letting Alienware take all the high-end VR glory, Dell have introduced a brand-new Inspiron Gaming Desktop, which even features liquid cooling – very fancy. The VR-capable desktops start at $599 USD, a very attractive price, considering how expensive some VR-ready PCs can be.

Frank Azor, Alienware, Dell Gaming and XPS vice president relishes the opportunity to share their PCs with the world; “I love arriving at E3 every year to watch fans get blown away by our latest PC gaming innovations and this year is no exception.”

Azor continues; “Our fans’ passion for Alienware and our gaming PCs is our lifeblood, and it’s only through our equal passion and commitment in delivering bleeding-edge innovation, design and performance, that we continue to exceed expectations and deliver on their requests.”

E3 attendees interested should stop by the South Exhibit Hall to see all of Dell and Alienware’s new kit.
