VR Summer Preview: Every Big Game Coming Soon

Let’s face it, there hasn’t been a lot of ‘big’ VR games this year.

True, there have been some absolutely great titles – Demeo, Carve Snowboarding, Wraith and Floor Plan 2 among others were all hugely enjoyable. But, Hitman 3 aside, there’s been a lack of blockbuster content for headsets that really gets everyone talking. That drought looks to end this summer.

So here’s our full VR Summer Preview listing all the big titles coming up in the next few months. This is for all platforms so whether you’re on Quest, PSVR or PC, there’s something for you. We’ll keep this list updated with new dates as they come in – including any announcements at our VR Showcase this weekend!

VR Summer Preview

After The Fall – TBA (Quest, PSVR, PC VR)

Vertigo Games’ Arizona Sunshine follow-up is finally shaping up to freeze over our summer.  After The Fall takes place in a frosty post-apocalyptic LA in which up to four players venture out into the wastes to take on hordes of zombies. A focus on persistent content has us hoping this co-op shooter becomes a staple in our libraries.

Arashi: Castles Of Sin – TBA (PSVR)

Announced just last week, Arashi looks a little like Tenchu in VR. You infiltrate six castles captured by bandits, using stealth to silently take down opponents or going loud and engaging them in melee combat. Oh, and did we mention you have a pet wolf?

Captain ToonHead vs the Punks From Outer Space – TBA (Quest, PSVR, PC VR)

A Saturday morning cartoon-infused mix of shooter and tower defense. CaptainToonhead promises ridiculous weaponry and a crazy assortment of enemies.

Fracked – TBA (PSVR)

nDreams’ follow-up to Phantom: Covert Ops looks like a surprisingly agile shooter. Explosive stunts are at the heart of this PSVR exclusive, which sees you making daring leaps, shooting down ski slopes and, well, just shooting too.

Green Hell VR – Q3 2021 (PC)

A full VR conversion of grizzly survival game, Green Hell, is due to reach PC VR this summer. Gather resources and fend for yourself in the heat of the jungle, where just about everything is looking for a piece of you. An Oculus Quest port will arrive later on in the year, too.

Larcenauts – TBA (Quest, PC VR)

Impulse Gear returns with a very different kind of shooter to Farpoint. Larcenauts is a team-based shooter in the vein of Overwatch with two teams of six battling it out using an array of unique character classes. Cross-play between Quest and PC is confirmed, too.

Lone Echo 2 – TBA (Rift)

What could very well be Facebook’s last PC-only game finally arrives after much delay. After the epic cliffhanger to 2017’s Lone Echo we’ve been dying to get back to Jack and Olivia and explore their strange new surroundings alongside them.

Song In The Smoke – TBA (Quest, PSVR, PC VR)

An intriguing-looking survival game, Song & Smoke mixes genre staples with a visual style designed with the help of industry legend Katsuya Terada. There’s still a lot to learn about Song In The Smoke, and we can’t wait to see more.

Sniper Elite VR – July 8 (Quest, PSVR, PC VR)

Sniper Elite VR went weirdly silent for a moment there, but we’re happy to see it’s finally on its way to all platforms next month. This is Rebellion’s first shot at a full VR FPS set in its popular franchise – and there’s endless opportunity for them to make good.

Wanderer – TBA (PSVR, PC VR)

This incredibly polished and promising escape room game has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of our most anticipated VR titles since it was officially revealed a few months back.  Wanderer’s time-traveling mechanic looks thoughtfully implemented, with interactions that really take advantage of the medium.

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Tempestfall – TBA (Quest, PC VR)

Carbon Studio brings its gesture-based combat system from The Wizards over to the Warhammer universe. Tempestfall will have you wielding a mighty sword against undead forces – it’s not to be confused with the recently-released Battle Sister, either.

Winds & Leaves – July 27 (PSVR)

Winds & Leaves is a peaceful game about reconnecting with nature. You’ll grow a forest and care for it as it expands. We’re hoping this one gives us the tranquil vibes of Paper Beast.

Best New PSVR Games Shown At This Week’s Spotlight

PSVR is currently going through what is most likely its swan song year.

But, while big first-party exclusives for the headset might be drying up as we march towards the new PS5 VR headset, there’s still plenty to look forward to.

Yesterday, Sony spotlighted seven titles heading to the platform this year. They included Sniper Elite VR and the reveal of Arashi: Castles of Sin. Need a quick rundown? Here are the best new PSVR games shown this week.

Arashi: Castles of Sin – New Game Announced

This one looks like Tenchu in VR. Set in Feudal Japan, you liberate castles captured by bandits using stealth — and a pet wolf — as your weapons. It’s coming this summer and we’ll be very interested to see how its ambitious concept of catering to multiple play styles holds up.

Fracked – New Gameplay Shown

nDreams’ gorgeous-looking PSVR exclusive wowed when it was revealed in early March, but this first look at proper gameplay is really something. We get an extended sequence in which the player launches between cover, sprints to safety and skis down slopes. We’ll be really interested to see how nDreams is managing all of this with the PlayStation Move controllers.

Wanderer – New Trailer Shown

Is it just us or is Wanderer looking really good? Usually, a VR escape room-style game wouldn’t raise much of an eyebrow but every time we see this one it displays gorgeous visuals and innovative solutions built around VR itself. We can’t wait to really dig in and see how it measures up to the impressive footage later this summer.

Sniper Elite VR – Coming July 8th

After a long silence, Sniper Elite VR is finally taking shape. This spin-off to the popular series is arriving on all platforms next month, giving players a full single-player campaign. Will Rebellion’s return to VR measure up? We’re looking forward to finding out.

Winds & Leaves – Coming July 27th

This gorgeous nature-driven adventure first looked like a farming sim. Now it kinda looks like a… supernatural farming sim. This new video focuses on some of the ways the player is linked to the forest they help grow. For example, move too far from the trees and they’ll pull you back in. It looks like a tranquil bit of VR loveliness and we’re looking forward to it on July 27.

After The Fall – New Look

It seems like every time there’s a VR showcase we’re guaranteed to get another look at After The Fall. Not that we’re complaining – the game looks like it’ll deliver a rock-solid Left4Dead VR experience with up to four-player co-op. Today we saw new enemies but still no release date beyond the summer 2021 window.

Puzzle Bobble VR – Coming To PSVR

And finally, Survios’ enjoyable (if inessential) take on Puzzle Bobble in VR is coming to PSVR soon. It launched on Quest a few weeks ago.

Co-op Zombie Shooter ‘After the Fall’ Trailer Gives a Closer Look at Combat, Enemies

The upcoming co-op VR zombie shooter, After the Fall, is due for a Summer release date on all major VR headsets, and developer Vertigo Games is offering up a closer look at what players can expect in a new trailer.

Due to launch sometime this Summer, we’re steadily learning more about the anticipated co-op VR zombie shooter, After the Fall. Crucially, the game supports up to four players playing together, including cross-platform multiplayer between all supported platforms (PSVR, PC VR, and Quest).

In the latest footage released from developer Vertigo Games we learn about the zombies (called the Snowbreed), the setting (1980s Los Angeles), and some of the combat and special enemies.

Players take on the role of Harvest Runners, survivors of the apocalypse that are brave enough to venture out into the frozen wasteland to scavenge for supplies.

Vertigo Games says players can expect to be equipped with the usual slew of handguns, shotguns, and rifles, and is promising “a weapon handling experience designed to satisfy even the most veteran VR players.”

Compared to other zombie games (say… Vertigo’s own Arizona Sunshine), the studio describes the Snowbreed as having a “wolf pack mentality,” and footage shows that you’ll be battling back some serious hordes.

The studio has also mentioned three special Snowbreed that are mutated beyond the usual type:

The Eater is an enormous, revolting Snowbreed type that will annihilate everything in its path if it explodes. Your best chance against this terrifying creature is to keep your distance and have a precise aim whenever he’s getting too close.

The Juggernaut is different from the regular Snowbreed. This hulking slab of undead muscle only has one goal: to grab and pummel you into dust. Getting hit by him is a 1-hit KO, so listen to your team and keep an eye out for him; it’s a high-priority target on your list!

The Smasher is large and highly aggressive. When these guys show up, you’d better steer clear and really work together to take them out. As you progress, you’ll encounter more versions of the Smasher, but that’s all I can say for now!

With horde-combat type games, a variety of interesting enemy types is a key ingredient to making engagements strategic and satisfying. Here’s to hoping the trio above will keep us all on our toes!

After the Fall is set to launch this Summer, but we still don’t have a specific release date or price.

After The Fall’s Enemy Count Will Be Identical Across Platforms, Vertigo Confirms

After The Fall, Vertigo Games’ long-awaited follow-up to Arizona Sunshine, is promising lots of zombies chasing after you when it launches this summer.

More importantly, though, the studio says the Oculus Quest version will be able to keep up with them.

The standalone version of the shooter was finally confirmed during last week’s Oculus Gaming Showcase. But, not only is After The Fall coming to Quest as well as PC VR and PSVR, it will also feature cross-play between all three versions of the game. Last week’s trailer, however, showcased huge hordes of enemies on screen at a time, leaving some wondering if the Quest port would be able to keep up. The device is, after all, not as powerful as gaming PCs or even the base PS4 console.

So we put that question to Vertigo itself. The studio told us: “The amount of enemies on all the platforms is identical, this counts for all important gameplay elements. We apply lodding techniques on rendering and animation, but also on code, to have dynamic quality while still keeping the enemies in sync between the platforms.”

Lodding, more commonly known as LOD (Level of Detail) means that certain assets in a game can change in quality based on different factors like distance. So enemies further away could perhaps use downgraded character models and animations when you get closer. So, while there will obviously be visual differences between the different versions of the game, it seems like the actual gameplay experience itself will be the same wherever you’re playing.

After The Fall arrives later this year on all major VR headsets. Will you be picking the game up? Let us know in the comments below!

New Trailer Drops for Co-op Shooter After the Fall

After the Fall

It’s the Oculus Gaming Showcase today, giving Oculus Quest and Rift owners a taste of what’s to come for both headsets in 2021. As part of the event, Vertigo Games has released a brand new trailer for its highly anticipated co-op shooter After the Fall.

After the Fall

Back in March the studio released a cinematic trailer showcasing the characters and the overall feel of After the Fall. Now it’s time to see the VR title in action, with a trailer which looks like its been entirely shot in-game. As you’d expect from an action-horror with mutant zombies – called Snowbreed – there are plenty of dark, chilling moments where players are suddenly swarmed from all sides as they try to survive the frozen hellscape.

The video not only offers a glimpse at the action but also some of the various creatures players will meet. As previously reported some of the Snowbreed can clamber on walls and ceilings but there are also some heavy-duty opponents to face. Tank-like monsters with armour and helmets, weird mutations which no longer look humanoid and one dude with a giant arm you don’t want to be caught by.

Originally announced in 2019 for a 2020 launch, Vertigo Games pushed the release back due to adapting to a remote working set up. While After the Fall will offer a single-player campaign, as you can see from the footage to get the most fun out of it you’ll want a few mates, with four players supported. That way you’ll be able to help each other out, throwing over a handy grenade or other useful items where need.

After the Fall

The storyline is set in a post-apocalyptic LA where climate change has ravaged the planet. Through the winter wasteland, players will have to scavenge for weapons and resources, using them to craft new items or make upgrades, building a hand-mounted multi rocket launcher for example.

Vertigo Games has stencilled in a Summer 2021 launch for After the Fall, support Oculus Rift (Oculus Quest via Link), PC VR headsets on Steam and PlayStation VR. Check out the new trailer below and for further updates on After the Fall, keep reading VRFocus.

After The Fall Is Coming To Oculus Quest, Gameplay Trailer Revealed

Vertigo Games’ co-op zombie shooter, After The Fall, has finally been confirmed for Oculus Quest.

The developer debuted a fresh look at the game during the Oculus Gaming Showcase today, confirming that it’ll be coming to the standalone headset, too. Check out over a minute of new footage (which is almost certainly taken from the PC version) below.

After The Fall Quest Version Confirmed

We saw first-person, four-player gameplay in action, with a team making its way through the snowy post-apocalyptic wastes as hordes of the undead surround them. Zombies crawl along ceilings and shamble in groups, and there are different types that vary in size and shape. Towards the end of the trailer we see a lot of enemies on-screen at one time. It will be interesting to see if the game can retain the headcount in the standalone version.

It’s been a long wait for new gameplay from After The Fall. We first revealed the game at the E3 VR Showcase in June 2019, but Vertigo rarely spoke about the project in 2020, when it was purchased by Koch Media.

After The Fall is now scheduled to arrive on Quest, PC VR and PSVR headsets this summer. We know that there will be cross-play between the PC VR and PSVR versions. Vertigo hasn’t yet confirmed if that feature will make it to Quest, too. A beta for the game has also been promised, though details on when that will roll out remain under wraps for now.

After the Fall Teasing Continues With Ziplines & Ceiling Zombies

After the Fall

Prior to March, Vertigo Games had barely released any information about its upcoming shooter After the Fall over the past year. That changed two weeks ago with a cinematic trailer and confirmation of a Summer 2021 launch. Now the studio has released a couple of gifs briefly showcasing some gameplay in action and how intense After the Fall is going to be.

After The Fall

First up you’re going to be able to use ziplines, either getting you out of trouble or as the above gif highlights, getting you right into the think of it. The enemies – or Snowbreed as they’re called – won’t be able to utilise the ziplines so the feature will provide extra gameplay strategies when you need them. Plus, ziplines are always fun in videogames, being able to traverse medium distances at great speed.

Showcasing the horror element of After the Fall, the second teasing gif takes place entirely indoors, inside some dark halls littered with elevators and, of course, Snowbreed. Now you get to see that the Snowbreed aren’t your standard zombies, rather mutated humans that have superior abilities allowing them to crawl across the ceiling. As any horror fan knows, while monsters can be scary crawling on the ground, stick them on the ceiling always increases that creepy factor.

Set in a post-apocalyptic, frozen LA, After the Fall is a four player FPS where you and your team have to fight a range of mutated monsters from the usual dumb zombies to big bosses in order to survive. Exploring the ruins you’ll be able to find normal weapons like pistols and shotguns as well as components to upgrade and make new ones – like a hand-mounted multi rocket launcher to kill hordes. Plus, if there aren’t enough players then AI companions will be dropped in to fill the gaps.

After The Fall

Considering the success of Vertigo Games’ Arizona Sunshine VRFocus is looking forward to seeing how After the Fall has progressed since its first demo. “We’ve learned a lot from Arizona Sunshine over the years and tried to make sure the co-op is as exciting while exploring new ways to play,” the team commented on Reddit.

After the Fall is now slated for a Summer 2021 launch window for PlayStation VR and PC VR headsets. A beta has been mentioned so expect more news on that soon. For those updates and more, keep reading VRFocus.

After The Fall Gameplay Clips Show Wall-Crawling Zombies

Vertigo Games is slowly pulling back the curtain on its long-anticipated VR shooter, After The Fall, with new gameplay just shown.

The team took to the VR subreddit to showcase to quick clips of the game in GIF form. One features the player on a zip line, barrelling into a crowd of zombies. Probably not the best survival technique, that.

New After The Fall Gameplay Revealed

After The Fall Gameplay Clip

The other, slightly more disturbing GIF sees the enemies crawling on the ceiling, shrouded in shadow until you expose them with your flashlight. It’s a pretty unsettling clip that drives home just how creepy the final experience may end up being.

Graphically the game looks pretty similar to when we last saw it, though these clips are the first in-game footage we’ve seen of After The Fall in well over a year. Vertigo’s follow-up to Arizona Sunshine is a little like Left4Dead in VR, tasking up to four players with fighting their way through a frozen post-apocalyptic wasteland. Over in the subreddit, Vertigo confirmed that a new gameplay trailer is coming soon, and that a beta is still planned before the game’s summer 2021 launch.

The game was originally announced in 2019 and was expected to arrive sometime in 2020. But the title was delayed last November, resurfacing earlier this month with an impressive new cinematic trailer. It’s still planned for PC VR and PSVR headsets but Vertigo also says it’s coming to other platforms, possibly hinting at Windows VR, an unannounced headset or a possible Oculus Quest port.

After The Fall Also Coming To ‘Yet To Be Announced’ VR Platforms

After a long silence, yesterday saw the return of Vertigo Games’ After The Fall with a new cinematic trailer and a Summer 2021 release window.

But a press release also teases the game is coming to “yet to be announced VR platforms” in the same timeframe.

That wording is a little unclear, either suggesting the game is coming to a headset that hasn’t been announced yet, or simply another version of the game for existing VR platforms is on the way. We reached out to Vertigo Games to clarify which it could mean, though the studio declined to comment for now.

We already know After The Fall is due on PSVR and PC VR headsets. We’ve long wondered, however, if the follow-up to Arizona Sunshine could also debut on Oculus Quest. Vertigo said it had “big plans” for the game in in an update late last year. Whatever this other version of the game is, cross-play with other headsets will be included there, too.

Similar to Arizona Sunshine, After The Fall is a co-op, first-person zombie shooter for VR. However the game swaps out the heat of the Arizona desert for a frozen wasteland and lets up to four players take part in campaign missions. Vertigo is promising an expansive online experience with post-game content and hub area for players to meet in.

We first debuted After The Fall all the way back at the E3 VR Showcase in 2019. A beta for the game is expected to run before its full launch later this year.
