AFFECTED: The Manor – Complete Edition Revamps the Horror Experience for Halloween

Affected: The Manor CE

It’s almost tradition that studios will release some sort of spooky theme for their videogames around Halloween but what do you do if your game is already scary? Well, in the case of Fallen Planet Studios’ horror title AFFECTED: The Manor it’s all about giving the experience a revamp whilst bringing all its DLC together in one easy to manage package.

Affected: The Manor CE

Called AFFECTED: The Manor – Complete Edition, VRFocus first reported on this new version at the end of 2020, with the initial expectation it was going to arrive in Q1 2021. Now its set to arrive next week, with PlayStation VR owners seeing the biggest changes. Fallen Planet Studios says the PlayStation VR edition gets “innumerable updates and improvements” with higher polygon models and a completely redesigned path system for starters.

While PC VR and Oculus Quest owners of AFFECTED: The Manor have previously been treated to extras like spooky speed run mode The Gauntlet and the frightening The Darkness mode, both are now coming to PlayStation VR for the first time. On top of all of that, no matter which platform you play AFFECTED: The Manor – Complete Edition on, it’ll now feature support for 10 languages, single-handed gameplay and a skin tone shader.

So is there anything special coming to the Oculus Quest and PC VR versions you ask? Most definitely. As a Halloween treat there’s a hidden secret: the Architect’s Room. You’ll need to be observant whilst exploring the manor to find the room: “inside will be all manner of secrets – both here in the present and for the future,” the studio notes.

“Everyone at Fallen Planet Studios is very happy to be bringing AFFECTED: The Manor – Complete Edition to the entire VR community,” said Alex Moretti, CEO Fallen Planet Studios in a statement. “This package is the culmination of more than half-a-decade’s work in creating VR horror experiences, and we can’t wait to see players across all VR platforms experience the ultimate virtual haunted house this Halloween!”

For PlayStation VR, AFFECTED: The Manor – Complete Edition will be available from 28th October 2021, priced at $9.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP, with a 20% launch discount for PlayStation Plus members. If you already own the videogame then it’s a free update. The PC VR version also arrives on the same date whilst the Oculus Quest version lands slightly sooner, on 25th October. AFFECTED: The Manor – The Complete Edition Coming in Q1 2021

Affected: The Manor

Fallen Planet Studios’ virtual reality (VR) horror AFFECTED: The Manor will be rolling out a revamped version it’s just been announced. The studio has been working on AFFECTED: The Manor – The Complete Edition for all currently supported platforms, slated to arrive early next year.

Affected: The Manor

Over the course of 2020, the studio has released DLC in the form of The Gauntlet as well as the Darkness update. The former added a speed run challenge with randomised events plus the ability to record a player’s screams for a final rating. Whilst the Darkness update made the experience even creepier, providing players with just a candle to light their way.

Both of these additions came to Oculus Quest first, with the PC VR edition getting them soon after. However, whilst the PlayStation VR version first arrived a couple of years ago, its yet to receive these updates. That’ll change with AFFECTED: The Manor – The Complete Edition. Arriving in Q1 2021, current owners will get the complete package as a free update. New owners simply purchase AFFECTED: The Manor – The Complete Edition.

This will be the same for the Oculus Quest and Steam versions as well. In addition to the new bundle, Fallen Planet Studios will also be visually overhauling the videogame across all platforms, further enhancing the experience.

Affected: The Manor

Originally released back in 2016 for Gear VR, AFFECTED: The Manor offered an ‘on-rails’, walkthrough horror experience much like classic haunted house rides. Since then, Fallen Planet Studiosw enhanced the title by catering for 6DoF technology, adding interactive elements to help players feel more connected to the world.

As Fallen Planet Studios reveal further updates to its AFFECTED series, VRFocus will let you know.

If you love a good scare whether for Halloween or at any other time of year then virtual reality (VR) horror is where it’s at. As any VR gamer knows once that headset is on and the doors start to creak and the wind begins to howl, no other horror medium really compares. So to celebrate the spooky season VRFocus has got a bunch of codes to giveaway for Fallen Planet Studios’ Affected: The Manor on Oculus Quest.

Affected: The Manor

Becoming a horror favourite with VR fans since its initial release back in 2016 for Gear VR, the studio has kept the title up to date by expanding platform support as well as adding new elements to the experience. The title is set around the classic haunted manor, offering a sort of ‘walkthrough horror’ in the first instance.

But as VR has progressed so has Affected: The Manor. When the Oculus Quest version was first revealed last year the studio said: “To take advantage of Quest’s abilities, we brought hand avatars and interactivity to the experience for the first time, making you feel more ingrained in the environment.” This meant interacting with doors for example.

Then during the summer, the team released The Gauntlet, free DLC which allows players to speed run with randomised events for a new challenge. This month saw the launch of The Darkness update to coincide with the launch of Oculus Quest 2. A new gameplay mode, this provides players with only a candle as their source of light. Quest 2 also got some enhancements like dynamic lighting and improve visuals.

Hold Your Nerve With These Scary VR Horror Titles

Lies Beneath

Halloween is almost upon us and while the events of 2020 may hamper traditional activities such as Trick or Treating, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the season. You could carve some pumpkins, dress up in some ghoulish face paint or if you’re really really brave play some of the virtual reality (VR) videogames listed below.

Affected: The Manor

AFFECTED: The Manor

This scary title has been doing the rounds for several years now, available on most platforms with recent updates adding a speedrun mode called The Gauntlet whilst The Darkness update upped the intensity by adding just a single candle for illumination. AFFECTED: The Manor isn’t so much a game rather a haunted house experience with multiple routes and endings if you can handle returning.

Five Nights at Freddys VR

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted

The long-running franchise came to VR in 2019 and was all the better for it. Full of bite-sized mini-games that will get your heart racing, the scenes from the previous editions have been updated for VR whilst new ones were added. If you like jump scares (or don’t) it doesn’t get much more intense than this.

In Death: Unchained

In Death/In Death: Unchained

Whether it’s In Death for PC VR and PlayStation VR or In Death: Unchained for Oculus Quest, what you get is a frantic fight against hordes of demons, with only a bow for company. Procedural levels mean that each run is never quite the same and death sees you placed back at the start.

Lies Beneath

Lies Beneath

A good horror game needs to be super creepy, usually with a nice mix of impending doom and some horrible looking monsters. If that’s what you’re looking for then Drifter Entertainment’s Lies Beneath should suffice. With some striking artwork and a comic book style delivery, this should easily keep you on edge.

Layers of Fear

Layers of Fear VR

Set in a hauntingly twisted mansion, Layers of Fear VR is a remake of the pancake original, adding immersive controls for a more intense experience. You play as a painter trying to finish his Magnum Opus yet as you wander his Victorian mansion his mind begins to unravel.

Propagation VR

Propagation VR

Time for one of the newest horror titles on this list, Propagation VR is the work of French team WanadevStudio. Normally creating videogames for VR arcades this is a wave shooter set in a dilapidated subway station after a virus has broken out. With no locomotion the action comes from all sides, creeping out of the darkness for some frightening moments. And the best bit is Propagation VR is completely free!

Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia

The current indie hit on Steam which only arrived into Early Access during September, Phasmophobia is a 4 player online co-op psychological horror. Whether you’re in VR or on PC, you and your team are paranormal investigators searching haunted locations for evidence of ghostly activity.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

For those after an awesome zombie survival experience in VR then look no further than Skydance Interactive’s The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. From the safety of your base where you can craft weapons and useful tools you need to head into the streets of New Orleans, searching houses for resources and finding other survivors to uncover their stories. And of course, removing a few walkers along the way.

The Room VR: A Dark Matter

The Room VR: A Dark Matter

Maybe not everyone’s definition of a horror experience, those that love a good atmospheric puzzle title should take a look at The Room VR: A Dark Matter. Expanding upon the popular mobile series you’re sent back to London circa 1908 to the British Institute of Archaeology where an esteemed Egyptologist has disappeared and a spine-tingling world awaits.

The Exorcist Legion VR screenshot 3

The Exorcist: Legion VR

Pretty much a staple of most VR horror lists, The Exorcist: Legion VR was released back in 2018 by British studio Wolf and Wood. An episodic story spilt across five chapters, you play the role of a detective investigating grisly murders. Needless to say, these all have a paranormal twist.

Blair Witch Oculus Quest

Blair Witch: Oculus Quest Edition

This final is a little extra because it’s not quite out yet. Another standard game port into VR, Blair Witch: Oculus Quest Edition has been redesigned for the headset with lots more interactive features. This probably makes it more terrifying to play as you wander into those haunted woods. It’s set to arrive just in time for Halloween on 29th October 2020.

Affected: The Manor To Get Quest 2 Enhancements, New Content In Darkness Update

More spooky scares await Oculus Quest 2 this week when Affected: The Manor launches its latest update.

The VR horror game, which is already available on the original Quest, will get improved visual and audio features on the new headset. More important, though, is The Darkness Update, which includes an all-new gameplay mode for free. In it, players will have only a limited amount of light to work with, creeping through the terrors by candlelight. If you thought you were brave enough to tackle the game the first time around, take a look at the trailer below and see if that’s still the case.

Affected Quest 2 Trailer

Affected is something of a VR showcase, trading in traditional mechanics like puzzles and combat for pure experience. You explore a creepy mansion, tasked with getting out alive as you’re haunted by new frights around every corner. The game already got a Gauntlet update that had players braving the trials on the clock. Check out Senior Editor David Jagneaux giving it his best shot below.

This update will also take advantage of Dynamic Shadows on Quest 2, making that new mode all the more immersive. 10 new language options will also be included in the update as well as a skin shader for the user’s avatar, which you can also expect to see in the original Quest version.

The Darkness update will be free to everyone that owns the game on Quest. Will you be checking out the Affected Quest 2 update? Let us know in the comments below!

Affected: The Manor’s New Update Judges Your Screams For Speedruns

Affected: The Manor’s new update adds a Gauntlet mode that challenges you to do a speedrun through a haunted house and judges your screams for points.

For those that have been around the VR scene for a few years, you probably recognize the name Affected. It’s one of the original VR horror games and has showed up, in some form or another, on basically every consumer VR headset. We first reviewed it back on the Gear VR and it’s only gotten better ever since.

Now today, Fallen Planet Studios is releasing a free update to Affected: The Manor called Gauntlet which adds a brand new game mode of the same name. In this mode you have to run from the start to the end as fast as possible. The longer your press forward on the left stick without stopping, the faster you’ll build up speed.

The catch? Every step of the way you’ll encounter a series of jump scares, sudden obstacles, possessed chairs, animated baby dolls, and an assortment of other haunted horrors. It’s a clever idea for a game mode, but it’s extremely short-lived.

As much as I enjoyed going through it three times to see how it differs each run (it only takes about 3-4 minutes to get through it if you’re not going full speed, but I was able to top the leaderboard at 2:29 on just my second try though) but there is little actual replayability. It’s not bad for a free update, but I’d liked to have seen more variability. Only a few things are different each time with regard to minor branching paths, but it’s about 90% identical every run.

That being said, if someone is comfortable with smooth locomotion and wants to try something focused on jump scares with immediate and quick thrills, this is a great choice.

The Manor was always seen as a great VR onboarding app and even though it’s not known for being a long experience, it’s still around 20 minutes for most, which is hardly demo length,” says Alex Moretti, CEO of Fallen Planet Studios in an email to UploadVR. “The Gauntlet is essentially a much punchier experience that plays on the strengths of The Manor, whilst offering what we feel is a totally different experience. We wanted to give it as free DLC because we feel it compliments The Manor so well, it makes sense for it to be part of the same package. Combined into a single product it also offers real value to the consumer for $9.99, which is very important to us. With the environmental menu and language localizations it really feels like the definitive version of that title for us now.”

One unique bit is that Gauntlet will actually use your Quest microphone to listen and rate your screams! The designation it assigns is based on how loud and terrified you sounded during the run. Thankfully the scream rating isn’t tied to your final time or ranking at all — only your speed matters for that.

The new Gauntlet mode is only available in the Oculus Quest version of the game for now. Affected: The Manor is also on sale with a 25% discount from today, July 9th, 2020 until July 16th, 2020. Affected: The Manor is a cross-buy title, so even if you don’t have it yet on either you could take advantage of the sale period and get it on both.

Between this new Affected update, Layers of Fear VR on Quest, Five Night’s at Freddy’s VR next week, existing games like Face Your Fears 2, Dreadhalls, Lies Beneath, and Exorcist VR, there is no shortage of excellent VR horror experiences on the standalone device.

Free DLC ‘The Gauntlet’ Arrives Today for Affected: The Manor on Oculus Quest

The Gauntlet

A couple of days ago Fallen Planet Studios teased information regarding its Affected horror franchise on Oculus headsets. Today, the studio has confirmed a free DLC package called The Gauntlet is due to arrive for Affected: The Manor on Oculus Quest.

The Gauntlet

Providing virtual reality scares since 2016, The Gauntlet will give Affected: The Manor fans a unique speed run challenge with randomised events. Players will be able to compete against others on a global leaderboard with the new content utilising the headset’s built-in microphone to detect screams, measuring their fear in the process. At the end of the run they’ll get a rating.

“With over 300,000 downloads to date, we know Affected: The Manor has been a staple for many VR users because it provides such an immersive experience at its core. With simple controls and independent of traditional gameplay, we can increase immersion and focus firmly on building
tension,” said Alex Moretti, CEO Fallen Planet Studios in a statement.

Alongside the DLC Affected: The Manor will gain enhanced language options including German, French, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean, with Portuguese, Italian, Russian and Chinese in the works.

The Gauntlet

“The addition of The Gauntlet now offers a much more immediate and dynamic experience for fans of The Manor, with randomised events that really challenge the player, allowing for both progression and replayability,” Moretti adds. “We wanted to provide this new DLC for free to our community, accompanied by a sale on its Quest release for any newcomers to Affected.”

Originally designed as a ‘walkthrough horror’, with the launch of the Oculus Quest version Affected: The Manor added extra functionality. This meant hand avatars and interactivity for the first time, so players could open doors, for example, increasing the level of immersion and that all-important scare factor.

Affected: The ManorThe Gauntlet will launch tomorrow, 9th July for Oculus Quest owners. The free DLC will then be made available for Oculus Rift next week followed by Steam in August. Fallen Planet Studios has also confirmed development of a PlayStation VR version.

As the studio continues to release further updates for Affected: The Manor, VRFocus will let you know.
