Review: Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown – VR Missions

The long awaited, frequently delayed Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown has finally launched, bringing with it a selection of PlayStation VR exclusive challenges. Known as the ‘VR Missions’, this gameplay feature has been a hot topic of discussion amongst the virtual reality (VR) community for several months, and now we can finally say that the quality of the experience delivered has been worth the wait.

It would be remiss not to begin by adding a significant caveat to the opening statement in that while the gameplay is indeed top notch, it is very short lived. The rather diminutive VR campaign – engrossing as it is – will likely take just a single evening to complete for the first time. Additional playthroughs are of course encouraged by way of the ranking system, but nonetheless Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown’s VR element is most certainly an addition to the core videogame, opposed to feeling complete in its own right.

The VR Missions are structured very similarly to that of the core campaign, as you might expect, but aren’t necessarily intended to follow after. The opening mission presents enough hints in its gentle introduction that players could very well jump straight into the VR Missions without needing to head through the basic tutorial, though doing so may see a few downed planes or ally bases being caught unawares. The increase in difficulty is harsher than that of the non-VR campaign due to its brevity, but the core Ace Combat audience will undoubtedly revel in having a new way to experience a real challenge.

Using the DualShock 4 controller the standard non-VR gameplay offers two control schemes aimed at casual players and ‘experts’, but in the VR Missions segment of the package only the latter is available. It may seem like a strange design decision but is undoubtedly due to the first-person default, more immersive nature of the VR gameplay. Of course, there’s always the option of utilising Thrustmaster’s T.Flight Hotas 4 flight control stick, but VRFocus will save jumping in-depth on this for another day.

It’s that added level of immersion that the VR Missions capitalise upon. All of the cockpits you will enter have been specifically redesigned from the ground-up to make full use of the PlayStation VR; simulating aspects of flight control that would otherwise be impossible on a videogame console. The attention to detail is simply phenomenal, and certain encounters will undoubtedly get your heart racing at times; collisions with enemy craft or the first time you experience cloud bursting.

In addition to the missions themselves, which are offered at three difficulty settings, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown includes two other VR modes unlockable through continued play: Free Flight and Air Show. These are simple additions that present further gameplay opportunities but lack the depth of the core experience. Worthwhile as contenders for showcasing VR to aeronautical enthusiast friends and relatives, these gameplay modes remain unlikely to hold your attention for too long beyond the basic assortment of missions. Inherent to the package, then, the VR Missions are most definitely an add-on opposed to a core principle of the videogame.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is a wonderful addition to the PlayStation VR’s software catalogue, but is undeniably limited. Those who had already decided to purchase this latest edition of the beloved series will find the VR Missions a perfect accompaniment to their non-VR experience; however, it would be extremely hard to recommend that anyone purchase Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown based on the strength of the VR element alone.

Take a Behind the Scenes Look at the PlayStation VR Mode for Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

Bandai Namco has been ramping up the promotional material for Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown this week, ahead of the videogame’s official launch on Friday. The latest comes by way of the PlayStation Blog, with a new behind the scenes video discussing the virtual reality (VR) mode for PlayStation VR.

Ace Combat brand director Kazutoki Kono reveals in the video that the team had always wanted to do an Ace Combat videogame in VR, with its implementation becoming a natural part of the process for the current instalment. One thing Kono-san wanted to ensure however was that every part of the title experience by VR players was viewed from the eye of the pilot – so no third-person sequences – which is possibly why there’s a VR mode, rather than the entire title being VR compatible as in other PlayStation VR experiences.

For the first time, it has now been revealed what the VR mode will entail, with the PlayStation Blog explaining: “The PS VR campaign features a dedicated single player mode that’s totally different from the main story campaign. Your mission starts in the year 2014, five years prior to the events of Ace Combat 7. You play as the legendary Mobius 1 fighting against the insurgency of Free Erusea. To say anymore would be spoiling things, but expect some callbacks to Ace Combat 4.”

The standard Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown story is about a conflict between the Kingdom of Erusea and the Osean Federation, which has escalated after the Osean Federation builds a giant space elevator in Erusea.

If you’ve been keeping up with the Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown coverage a few days ago PlayStation Underground released a video showcasing the VR mode in action, while last week saw the reveal of a PvP multiplayer mode which will pit up to eight players together in a battle for the skies. Unfortunately multiplayer won’t support PlayStation VR.

For that extra immersive edge don’t forget that Thrustmaster has launched the T.Flight Hotas Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown Edition, available at a suggested retail price of £74.99 GBP.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be available from 18th January, 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and 1st  February for PC. Check out the new behind the scenes video below, and for any further updates ahead of launch, keep reading VRFocus.

There are only a few days to go until Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown finally launches for PlayStation 4 with its additional support for PlayStation VR. If your excitement has reached fever pitch, whether you’ve pre-ordered or are just awaiting launch day to pick up your copy, PlayStation Underground has just released a new video where you can see some virtual reality (VR) footage in action.

As most PlayStation VR players should be all too aware of by now, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown isn’t a fully fledged VR title. Bandai Namco has instead gone for an add-on approach, where the main campaign can only be played on a regular screen, with specific, custom made missions are available for VR players.

That might be a little disappointing, but from what VRFocus has seen so far those missions are going to look impressive. And that certainly seems to be the response of PlayStation Underground judging by the video. It’s not all PlayStation VR footage so you’ll need to jump to around 5:10 to see the headset in action.

Last week Bandai Namco announced that Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will include a multiplayer mode, not just a single-player campaign. Up to eight players can go head-to-head in a free for all Deathmatch mode, a Team Deathmatch mode. Unfortunately, this mode seems to be only TV friendly, with VR gamers unable to take part.

VRFocus has been looking forward to Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown for a while now, having previously previewed it in 2017, saying: “In its present state Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown promises high octane flying action for PlayStation VR players that’s sure to encourage legions of fans to try the VR compatibility. As long as Bandai Namco manage to provide enough content to satisfy then PlayStation VR is likely to have another killer exclusive title.”

Originally due for release in 2017, the title was bumped to 2018, before being moved again with an official 2019 launch date. The title appeared in VRFocus Best PlayStation VR Games Coming In 2019‘, and for those looking for the most authentic experience why not pick up the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown Edition, available at a suggested retail price of £74.99 GBP. Keep an eye out for VRFocus review closer to launch.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown to Include Multiplayer, but not for VR

ONe of the first big videogame releases of 2019 is about to take place next week, with Bandai Namco due to launch Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown for Xbox and PlayStation 4 with additional PlayStation VR support. Today, the publisher has announced that the title will also feature an additional multiplayer mode for players to take on each other in PvP combat.

The multiplayer mode will allow up to eight players to go head to head in aerial dogfights, in either a free for all Deathmatch mode, and also a Team Deathmatch mode too. Players will have 28 aircraft to choose from (with additional aircraft available as part of the Deluxe Edition and as a preorder bonus) plus the ability to highly customise their craft with more than 100 enhanced parts and weapons to finely tune their combat style.

And for those who like to add a little flair to their vehicle, a nickname can be included alongside 300 emblems.

To keep the matches dynamic, if you happen to be ranked first during the fight then you’ll be highlighted and have a bounty placed on your head. This will mean that should you get shot down the player that does so will score more points than usual. This will mean players will need to think and act fast to attain the most kills and points before the match ends.

While this does sound awesome, unfortunately, if you happen to be playing Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown on PlayStation VR you won’t be able to take advantage of the multiplayer mode, you’ll have to go back to the normal boring flat screen.

This is because while PlayStation 4 system players will be able to play a full campaign in standard mode, PlayStation VR access is limited to exclusive and dedicated content with specific missions developed for the virtual reality (VR) headset.

For flight fans don’t forget that Thrustmaster has launched the T.Flight Hotas Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown Edition,  available at a suggested retail price of £74.99 GBP.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be available from 18th January, 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and 1st  February for PC. Check out the new multiplayer trailer below, and for any further updates ahead of launch, keep reading VRFocus.

The Best PlayStation VR Games Coming in 2019

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has had quite the year when it comes to virtual reality (VR) and PlayStation VR. Sure its main focus is on PlayStation 4, but the company has ensured the console-based headset has had some corking exclusives, like Borderlands 2 VR and Astro Bot Rescue Mission. With it now begin 2019 it’s time for VRFocus to look toward the next year, and see what we know the upcoming 12 months will bring.

Blood & Truth - Screenshot (E3 2018)

Blood & Truth – Sony London Studios

The first of two titles two make the same list a year on, Sony London Studios’ action spy caper Blood & Truth was supposed to have arrived in late 2018, but now looks to be a 2019 release – no concrete date has been set. Putting you in an action hero role, you are elite Special Forces soldier Ryan Marks, on a desperate mission to save his family from a ruthless criminal overlord. VRFocus last played Blood & Truth during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 seeing several new updates including dual wielding.

Blood & Truth is exclusive to PlayStation VR when it hopefully arrives later this year.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown – Bandai Namco

Possibly a little divisive due to the fact that it’s not a fully blown VR title, nevertheless, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is still an experience VRFocus is looking forward to. Rather than making the entire videogame VR friendly, the developers have instead included VR-specific missions. How well this will hold up remains to be seen, as VRFocus’ previous encounters have been positive but short lived.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is set to launch on 18th January 2018, for PLayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with VR support exclusive to PlayStation VR.

Trover Saves the Universe

Trover Saves the Universe – Squanch Games

Probably the weirdest videogame on the list, Sqaunch Games were the studio behind Accounting and Accounting+, and Trover Saves the Universe is their next title. Taking that same comedy charm which founder Justin Roiland is known for, the title is a madcap adventure in which players will not only be controlling Trover as a third-person character but they themselves will be in the universe as a first-person character.

Trover Saves the Universe is set to launch at a currently unspecified date in 2018, exclusively for PlayStation VR.

Angry Birds VR Isle of Pigs Coming Soon Image

Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs – Resolution Games/Rovio

Announced less than two weeks ago, Resolution Games and Rovio Entertainment are planning to bring one of the biggest mobile franchises to VR. They’ve not confirmed much at the moment, including actual headsets simply stating ‘across all major VR platforms’ so VRFocus is assuming PlayStation VR is a given.

Expect more bird-flinging action when Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs arrives later this year.

Golem – Highwire Games

The other title that VRFocus was originally expecting to be released in 2018, Highwire Games’ Golem first appeared in 2015 during a PlayStation Experience (PSX), popping up occasionally in the following two years to remind us development was still ongoing. Highwire Games had said as recently as September that Golem was very much on track for a 2018 release, but that’s definitely not the case.

“In Golem, you play as an adventurous kid who has been seriously injured. You are stuck at home in your bed, dreaming of exploring the outside world. You gradually develop the power to create and control stone creatures known as golems. You see through their eyes, direct their movements, and use them to explore beyond the confines of your room. At first, you can only build small doll-sized golems to send around your room…but eventually your powers will grow, until you can send enormous 15-foot tall giants to explore an ancient abandoned city.”

Golem now doesn’t have a release date, again VRFocus is hoping another year won’t go by and it’ll get a 2019 release.

Thrustmaster Unveils Launch Date for Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Edition Joysticks

Bandai Namco’s arcade flight experience Ace Combat: Skies Unknown is a couple of months away from launch, offering PlayStation VR compatible sequences rather than the entire experience. For avid flight fans after a more immersive control scheme than that offered by the DualShock 4 controller, Thrustmaster has just announced an official launch date for its new joystick, the T.Flight Hotas 4 Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Edition.

Ace Combat TflightHotas4_liftestyle5

Capable of being used in both virtual reality (VR) as well as on TV, the setup includes a limited edition joystick and throttle control. The device features a comprehensive flight gear: 5 axes + 12 action buttons + 1 rapid-fire trigger + 1 multidirectional hat switch (navigation / panoramic view), a weighted based for stability, official buttons for PlayStation 4 system (PS/Share/Options), adjustable stick resistance with large hand rest, and a dual rudder system which works by rotating handle (with integrated locking system) or by progressive tilting lever.

Additionally, to make the entire setup is as comfortable for all players as possible, the throttle is detachable.

The T.Flight Hotas Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown Edition will be available for preorder as of Thursday, 13th December, 2018, available at a suggested retail price of £74.99 GBP. The official launch date will be 17th January 2019, one day before Ace Combat: Skies Unknown lands.

Having previously demoed the title VRFocus found that: “In its present state Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown promises high octane flying action for PlayStation VR players that’s sure to encourage legions of fans to try the VR compatibility. As long as Bandai Namco manage to provide enough content to satisfy then PlayStation VR is likely to have another killer exclusive title when the videogame finally arrives next year.”

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Thrustmaster and Ace Combat: Skies Unknown, reporting back with any further updates.

BANDAI NAMCO Unveils Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Collectors Edition

There’s only three months to go until BANDAI NAMCO launches its long awaited flying sequel Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown for Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4 with PlayStation VR support. The studio has now revealed further details for its upcoming Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Collectors Edition.

BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe has confirmed that the Collector’s Edition (uniquely numbered) will contain:

This has only been detailed for European customers. As VRFocus previously reported last month, North American will be able to make use of a different offer via the PlayStation Store. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown tells the story of a conflict between the Kingdom of Erusea and the Osean Federation, which has escalated after the Osean Federation builds a giant space elevator in Erusea. PlayStation VR support won’t include the entire videogame, instead BANDAI NAMCO has created exclusive missions for the headset.

Having previously demoed the title VRFocus found that: “In its present state Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown promises high octane flying action for PlayStation VR players that’s sure to encourage legions of fans to try the VR compatibility. Pre-Order Ace Combat 7 to get Ace Combat 5 for Free

There might be a few months to go until Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown finally arrives for PlayStation VR, but Bandai Namco has a tempting offer for those interested in pre-ordering the title ahead of launch, a free copy of Ace Combat 5.

Available to pre-order now on the US PlayStation Store for $59.99 USD, there are three incentives to purchasing Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown early. An Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown dynamic theme which you’ll get straight away, a  McDonnell Douglas F-4E plane and three aircraft skins for launch, and of course the full version of Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War to enjoy (again available at launch). Additionally, this offer (minus the dynamic theme) will be available at retail locations.

As well as the new pre-order offer Bandai Namco has released a new gameplay trailer showcasing the virtual reality (VR) portion of the experience. From checking stats and loadouts on the ground to taking off from an aircraft carrier and heading into a variety of combat situations across a range of scenery, the video gives a good glimpse of the arcade simulator.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown tells the story of a conflict between the Kingdom of Erusea and the Osean Federation, which has escalated after the Osean Federation builds a giant space elevator in Erusea. Having previously demoed the title VRFocus found that: “In its present state Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown promises high octane flying action for PlayStation VR players that’s sure to encourage legions of fans to try the VR compatibility.
