Here’s What Oculus Go Games Look Like On Quest

Last week, Oculus announced that a selection of Go apps were coming to Quest. It didn’t take long for them to arrive.

Over 60 Oculus Go games and experiences are available on Quest as part of this week’s update. Once you’ve installed the patch, you’ll be able to switch out ‘Devices’ in the Library tab on Quest. There, in the Not Installed section, you’ll find any Go apps you own that can be played on Quest. That includes two of the platform’s best games; Land’s End and A Night Sky.

Here’s what they look like running on the platform!

We do know that a selection of these apps support full six degrees of freedom (6DOF) tracking. Others are locked to the 3DOF tracking seen on Go. We haven’t been able to make the distinction for each game yet, but both of these titles support 6DOF.

Land’s End

Long time Upload readers will know Land’s End has always held a special place in my heart. Monument Valley developer Ustwo created a powerfully immersive exploration game. Not only does it still hold up today, but the positional tracking lets you see it with fresh eyes for the first time in four years. I shimmied along cliff faces and stood with the waves washing up on my feet. It was just as striking as it was all those years ago.

A Night’s Sky

Meanwhile, A Night Sky has always been an effective introduction to the wonders of VR. Coatsink’s sky-gazing showcase was first designed for the Go and Gear’s respective 3DOF motion controllers. On Quest, though, the app supports 6DOF hand-tracking. It feels much more natural and even more comfortable inside the headset.

Other Experiences

We’ve also tried Dream Dev Studios’ Death Horizon. It’s a bit of an odd choice for a Quest release as Death Horizon: Reloaded came out for the headset last week. The Go version is all 3DOF, too, so the difference is night and day. E McNeil’s Tactera, meanwhile, can be played with full 6DOF controls and feels right at home.

These are just two apps, though. We’ll continue to tinker with the other experiences and see what’s possible. Facebook also says it will bring more games and apps to the headset in the future so stay tuned.

A Night Sky für Gear VR: Sechstes Pack erschienen, Bundle-Angebot

Der VR-Titel A Night Sky erhält mit Night of the Emperors innerhalb kurzer Zeit bereits sein sechstes zusätzliches Content-Paket.

Neue Inhalte für A Night Sky

Die jüngste Episode Night of the Emporer kostet einzeln knapp einen Euro. Die ursprüngliche Erfahrung A Night Sky steht im Oculus Store kostenlos zur Verfügung. Die VR-Erfahrung setzt den Samsung-Controller voraus.

Coatsink Releases A Night Sky: Night of the Emperors Update

Augmented Empire developer Coatsink Software released its relaxing, star gazing experience A Night Sky back in March, and since then has released five additional content packs for players to purchase. Today, the studio has announced its sixth and final update to the videogame, Night of the Emperors.

Due to the time of year A Night Sky: Night of the Emperors is a holiday themed update where players can chill out with a family of playful penguins, enjoying a new mini-game, new characters, and the Northern Lights.

The new update is available to purchase on its own for £0.79, $0.99 and €0.99 if you’ve already bought the other five packs. Or for a limited time Coatsink will be offering all six updates in one bundle priced at £2.99 GBP, $3.99 USD and €3.99 EUR.

Here’s a quick roundup of the other five updates:

  • Pack 1 – Night of the Dragon
    • Indulge an owl, defy a dragon and conduct a kaleidoscope of butterflies in Night of the Dragon.
  • Pack 2 – Night of the Golem
    • Drawn to the glow of your campfire, a young golem has settled on an outcrop nearby. Night of the Golem introduces new reactions and a lively, inquisitive companion.
  • Pack 3 – Night of the Kraken
    • Confront the scourge of the stormy seas in Night of The Kraken, introducing a gigantic new creature, new animations, and a target range mini-game.
  • Pack 4 – Night of the Phoenix
    • Arise from the cinders to the stratosphere in Night of the Phoenix, introducing a new musical mini-game, unique animations and a fiery new companion.
  • Pack 5 – Night of the Martians
    • Prepare for a close encounter in Night of the Martians, introducing a giant extra-terrestrial ship, new animations and a hide-and-seek mini-game. Relax… They come in peace.

For those that haven’t tried A Night Sky on Samsung Gear VR, Coatsink Animator Emma Hollingsworth explains on the Oculus Blog: With A Night Sky, we wanted to create an accessible and charming introduction to VR that newcomers could pick up and immediately understand and play. This meant intuitive controls with detailed and captivating animations. We also wanted to push the humor in our animations and make sure there’s always a new character or amusing detail to discover around the next corner.”

Shiver Me Timbers A Night Sky Gets New Content

British developer Coatsink has expanded the content available for its chilled out Samsung Gear VR experience A Night Sky with a free update called The Night of the Kraken.

Adding a pirate theme to the starry videogame, the update features a new mini-game where players are now armed with a mighty cannon to shoot a series of targets.

A Night Sky Kraken

Designed to appeal to all ages with its quirky art style and easy pick-up-and-play mechanics, A Night Sky uses simple point and touch controls allowing the player to connect star constellations into patterns. As these shapes are connected and formed the virtual world comes alive with strange and wonderful animals, with them flying, running, and bounding around.

This latest addition continues Coatsink’s regular monthly roll out of updates for A Night Sky, with last months featuring new performances and interactions with existing creatures, with an owl, a dragon and a kaleidoscope of butterflies. Just like previous updates, The Night of the Kraken is priced at £0.79 GBP, $0.99 GBP and €0.99 EUR.

Due to arrive on 30th June, the additional content will include new performances and interactions with existing creatures, with an owl, a dragon and a kaleidoscope of butterflies set to feature. The update will be priced at £0.79 GBP, $0.99 GBP and €0.99 EUR.

In addition to this first update release, Coatsink has revealed that new content packs will now be released monthly expanding the gameplay options in A Night Sky over the coming months.

A Night Sky is the latest VR release from the studio most well known for its puzzle series Esper and Esper 2. Costsink has one other announced title in the works for Samsung Gear VR in the form Augmented Empire. There’s no release date yet for the title but you can read VRFocuspreview to see what it’s all about.

Oculus Studios’ A Night Sky Is A Peaceful Showcase Of VR’s Power

Oculus Studios’ A Night Sky Is A Peaceful Showcase Of VR’s Power

I’d be willing to bet that in some sort of all-encompassing list of ‘Things Most Looked At In VR,” a starry night’s sky ranks highly. There’s no more obvious and immediate source of beauty on the entire planet, after all, and some of us see it every time we boot up our HTC Vives. But, after over a year of star gazing in VR, how do you maintain that same sense of wonder you first felt when you tilted your head upwards? Coatsink and Oculus Studios have a suggestion.

A Night Sky is coming to Gear VR as a free release and, yes, it uses that shiny new controller set to debut later this month, though it supports gaze control too if you’re not planning on picking one up.

The app is a typically whimsical introduction to VR. You sit over looking a ranch hidden away behind some rock formations. It’s a peaceful scene, the kind that reminds me of a nice night spent wondering the plains of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption, though there are no cowboys in sight. Instead, there’s a big glowing star sitting in the center of the dark blue sky, calling to you to glimpse at it for just a few seconds.

Do so, and another star appears. And another, and so on.

Eventually, you’ll join the dots of a recognizable shape — in the first instance a bird — which will then come to life right before your eyes. An owl swoops down from the heavens and perks itself on a branch to one side. It looks on as new stars appear and invite you to once again create imaginary constellations out of them that will then trigger other sequences.

I make a boat and watch two ships sail into the night air and trade cannonballs, while later butterflies surround me as they flutter upwards. It’s all very lovely and pleasant, though there’s a lot of that going around in VR already. Solid production values and the lack of pricing should make it worth checking, out though.

A Night Sky isn’t going to be the big, expansive kind of adventure that Coatsink is building with Augmented Empire, but it’s not meant to be. It’s the kind of thing you’ll stick on your friend’s head as an introduction into the wide and wonderful world of VR.

A Night Sky releases alongside Gear VR’s new controller on April 21st.

Coatsink Confirm New Title A Night Sky Exclusive to Gear VR

British virtual reality (VR) developer Coatsink Software is synonymous with mobile titles, having launched Esper, Esper 2 and recently announcing Augmented Empireall for Samsung Gear VR. To coincide with today’s announcements from Samsung and its new Gear VR controller, the studio has unveiled a brand new title to arrive alongside the device next month, called A Night Sky.

A Night Sky will be a relaxing experience for Gear VR users with the Coatsink stating in the description: “A campfire crackles on the edge of a secluded vale as the player relaxes beneath the open sky. Using simple point and touch controls, the player connects the constellations above to form patterns among the stars. As different shapes are discovered, strange and wonderful creatures are brought to life that stride, bound and glide around the hillside.”

A Night Sky_Screenshot_03

The videogame will arrive on 7th April 2017, and will be completely free to download.

While Samsung has previously announced that over 70 titles are in development that support the new controller only a few have so far been confirmed. These are Augmented Empire, Drop Dead, SingSpace, Rangi and Rooms.

Interestingly in Coatsink’s press release the studio states that: “Our experience will be released alongside nearly 20 other titles  (from other developers) to choose from in April for all Samsung gear users in celebration of the new Gear VR and Controller”. This is the best information yet on how many videogames will be available for the device at launch on 21st April.

If you’ve been following VRFocus’ coverage of Samsung Unpacked you’ll know about the new Gear 360 camera as well as the price of the new Gear VR controller and its specifications. US customers will also be able to make use of a Verizon Bundle deal.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Coatsink, reporting back with the latest announcements from the studio.
