There’s Going to be A Giant Problem Arriving on Steam Early Access in April

Initially revealed just over a year agoA Giant Problem by indie developer Critical Games was originally planned for an early access release the same year. That didn’t happen but today the studio has settled on a date, bringing the title to Steam in a couple of weeks.

A Giant Problem

A wave-based action videogame where you play as the titular giant who needs to fight off lots of little enemies. Set in a fairytale world for once you’re not getting attacked by angry, pitchfork-wielding villagers. Instead, your job is to defend the village from an onslaught of goblins, trolls, wizards and other magical beings intent on stealing your gold.

To do this you get to smash through these foes with a variety of weapons, objects, and magic, throw a boulder in their faces or use some fire/lightning magic to cause some mayhem. While A Giant Problem is a single-player title your character doesn’t have to defend the village alone. You’ll be able to command the villagers to the front line, directing counter-attacks whilst building and repairing defences.

The initial early access release will include all the base assets and abilities needed and in a playable state. The team notes that: “the game is not completely balanced, nor are all of the planned features and modes implemented.” When it comes to future development Critical Games plans to add four to six new maps, additional enemies, a third type of magic, a Party Mode and character customization.

A Giant Problem

Compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Valve Index headsets the studio has also considered players who want to record their gameplay, including a second streamable camera that can be controlled with the mouse and keyboard to improve the viewing experience for all, whether the audience is local or online.

A Giant Problem is slated to launch on 1st April 2020 – a day which VRFocus is always suspicious of – on Steam. It will also be available through Humble Bundle and Itch.io. A version for Oculus and Viveport stores will be rolled out in the coming months. VRFocus will continue its coverage of A Giant Problem, reporting back with further updates.

Indie Studio Critical Charm Unveils Debut Title A Giant Problem

Having been founded just over six months ago, Finnish indie developer Critical Charm has now announced its first project, a virtual reality (VR) title called A Giant Problem, which is planned for release via Steam Early Access soon.

A Giant Problem

From Critical Charm’s description of A Giant Problem, the videogame sounds like a mashup between real-time strategy gameplay and tower defence. Players find themselves defending their home against an assault of troops from the King, here to claim taxes. There’s just one little problem they have to face, and that’s you, as you just so happen to be a giant.

As the gigantic defender of the village, you’ll be able to swat away troops with your hands, missiles, toss rolling rocks and lob large logs at the oncoming hordes. The villagers aren’t helpless, however, you’re able to command them to mount a defence, whilst repairing the walls. To succeed players must ensure their villagers survive, whilst protecting their gold and holding the King’s forces back.

To aid you in your endeavour, you also have access to some magical abilities. Like any good fantasy focused videogame you’ll be able to wield the elements, throwing balls of fire and bolts of lightning to take down those dastardly troops.

A Giant Problem

Currently, Critical Charm has yet to reveal what A Giant Problem looks like or how the game actually plays, only releasing these artistic images. Support has already been confirmed for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets, with the studio stating on its website that: “The final features are still being determined as the game is in early alpha.”

A Giant Problem is set to be released into Steam Early Access in Q1 2019 and will also be available for purchase via Itch.io, the Oculus store, VivePort, and elsewhere in Q2 2019.

Critical Charm is based in Helsinki, Finland, headed up by CEO Marjo Sutinen. The rest of the team include Minna Salminen, Sebastian Riikonen, and Gregory Pellechi. They’ve been involved in Farm League, the game incubator at Games Factory. As further details are released regarding A Giant Problem, VRFocus will keep you updated with the latest announcements.
